Love the way Jimmy went out. He knew what he was walking into. Didn't beg, didn't cry, didn't put up a fight. As he said, he was already dead. (Died in the trench, years ago.) This was his time and he knew it.

@@atdthebandhe did it to himself. He was a problem off screen, he wasn’t suppose to die anytime soon, in fact he was suppose to be the main character in the long run.
Jimmy was a great character and his ending was directed perfecltly. It honored the character and completed the arc in the most respectful manner.
The stage was open for new storylines and the nexte two seasons were just as fine as the two before them.

I love how Jimmy looks at Owen and says “you” like he has no respect for him and when he says Eli he says it half joking like he knows Eli won’t do it he only seriously considered Manny to be the one to do it but Nucky did it as Jimmy says in the Pilot “You can’t be half a gangster”
For me, this episodes is one of the most astounding hours of TV i've watched to date. such a balsy chance but so brilliant and wretching.
If you look at everything that happened to Nucky in season 3. You would see that Jimmy's final warning (2:40) is slowly coming to fruition (it would be cool if Michael Pitt could come back as a ghost at the end of the season to remind Nucky that he had warned him about running out of company.)
This is such an amazing scene, especially when you see him down in the trenches and he's preparing for his death. I think that's the exact time when he said his life goodbye.

1) He didn't know Eli was the one who brought up trying to whack him.
2) Jimmy was the boss so it's ultimately as much his responsibility as it was Eli's if not more so.
3) You really think from a writing standpoint having Nucky kill Eli and *not* Jimmy makes any sense? Come on, lol
very well written, interesting scene
Jimmy told Nucky that it was Eli who wanted him killed (whether he believed it is up in the air) but what people forget is that the reason that Eli was not going to die is that one of themes of the show is that "blood is thicker that water" which when you think of it is why Jimmy chose his own father (The Commodore) over his father figure (Nucky) and realized too late, why that was a bad choice.

Jimmy. Jimmy to me represented a ordinary boy with dreams, aspirations, simple human characteristics like any other young man his age, but troubled, torn between things he couldn't let go of in his mind, and that troubled his heart and utter soul. He personified to me the extremity in a way of how hard it was to be a young man in a turbulent corrupt and cynical world. I see a little of myself in him, i miss him, sorry as of season 4 im done. it was nice though.
And the only person left to judge him is... I'm sure the last season will finish that sentence for jimmy.

Season 3 came and went and he was not missed one bit!
I unfortunately saw this before I just began the series from the beginning. With that said, you can see in early seasons how much of a burden Jimmy is to Nucky. Even if I didn't see see it, you can just tell Jimmy was one day going to get whacked.
With all that money, you'd think they would just succumb to a big house in rich splendor. In contrary, the hustle never ends. Death is what every man seek to rectify the path they've chosen. Jimmy knew theres is no way out, he sought wealth not power.
Jimmy was a selfish character who chose wealth over friendship.
Not really...what other friends did he have besides Al Capone and Richard Harrow, because he treated them both (especially Richard) really good. All the others like Lucky and the rest were mainly associates etc. The power did get to him, but he never truly wanted Nucky dead, and there were previous moments were Nucky used to treat him like shit lol.

For the life of me I can't understand why Nucky is so hard to kill...
I think Jimmy was taken off the show because the writers want S3 to focus more heavily on Al Capone's conquest of Chicago and Lansky and Lucciano's rise (which of course is the birth of American Cosa Nostra). Nonetheless, I think he was the best character on the show.
Looking back, this was an amazing choice. Aside form the on-set issues with MIchael Pitt -- which was the reason they sped up killing him off -- I think it's way more congruent with the themes and overall point of the show. In real life, this is exactly what would happen to someone like Darrmody, 100%.
Like given everything that Jimmy did to Nucky and how he behaved towards the NYC cosa nostra he 100% had it coming. It's a miracle it didn't happen earlier, he spent 2 seasons goding crime groups to murder him.
The best touch is when Jimmy tries talking to Nucky like he's never shot a man before with that "Youll get through it." line he tries telling him. He cuts him off with a hot one to the cranium in a way that shows the viewer that Nucky has done this a whole shitload of times before.

If only Tommy knew the full story and all the nuances, he probably wouldn't have killed Nucky.

He was tired of being an empty shell, Like he said His soul died in the battlefields of europe, he wanted his tormented life to end.
Jimmy accepted his fate, he knew he would have to pay for whats he done.
Totally agree here BIG time.
IMO Jimmy's death in S2EP12 is a potentially damaging moment in the storyline albeit very dramatic and even award worthy. The tension between Pitt's characterar and Buscemi's helped solidify the entire series and would've help to spawn multiple seasons well into this inevitable moment. Doing this NOW not only takes all this away but may make Thompson's new foes less attractive dramatically.
I look forward to seeing the new approach BE will take starting at S3 with Thompson's more maniacal stance

He tried to fix everything even his mess up with nucky to find his own peace. He knew he would die gave his son his dog tags, told richard not to come, came unarmed, cleared nucky name, and made sure the estate goes to his son when he dies. Now the way he died was solider's death honorable in acceptance. Eli will die a 1000 deaths for being a coward and lieing when he suggested nucky's death. The only thing I would like is for nuck to know the truth about this secret. James didn't want him dead.
I agree with Jimmy's death happening etc, but they really should've created another character, someone not to fill his shoes or 'Be the new Jimmy' but a young guy who was ambitious and wanted wealth and power, Owen was too content to be that guy.
Also they should've kept Real people separate from the Fictional people as much as possible for a more creative license until maybe the last season, it could've gone towards possibly 7-8 seasons.
I keep wondering why Jimmy's death makes so many people angry. He did nothing right. He was never cut out to be any more than the muscle. He bet it all betraying Nucky and lost. That's how gambles go.
He was too hot headed to take the lead of Atlantic City. The way he dealt with Doyle and Manny was proof of that, it was literally the whole point.
I liked the idea that Nucky's wife transferred the deed to the Church.
I like the juxtaposition of Jimmy's physical death and his spiritual death, his real death. Tragic, but powerful.

Now what? We know how Enoch Thompson turns out, he goes to jail and lives until 1963. We know how Al Capone turns out, he becomes the biggest crime boss in the country then goes to jail for tax evasion and dies of an STD, and we know Eli is probably going to go to jail for 2 years.
I guess we could see what happens to Richard, Gillian and Nelson.

I'm sure you could find stats about suicide among ww1 veterans around. Just imagine having to try to come back to a world where no one understands and well really cares about what you been threw. Trying to readjust to a world with laws and morals that you did not respect before. A person who has gone threw that doesn't come back the same.

I was shocked at this part and I always wondered why they killed him off but he had to go I guess for turning on Nucky.
Great wrighting but this got to me severly. Can't remember many movies or series that touched me like that so I guess it's to Scorsese's credit. But tradgic non the less. :
I'm really sad they killed off Jimmy. His character brought so much depth and charm to the show. I wonder what season 3 will be like without him.

As much as I loved Jimmy I loved Richard right from the start...Check out the Boardwalk Empire Jack Huston Interview; he's absolutely GORGEOUS, a GREAT actor & I think this will be a HUGE break for him!!

I really do hope that Richard Harrow is gonna seek revenge on nucky in the third season for killing his only friend jimmy.
It's always interesting how a character can be so well liked even if he is a complete asshole. Jimmy killed his fair share of people some for business and some for his own personal reason and it still stings a little to watch him get his share.
Even in the situation like that jimmy think that might be his mentor will change his heart. Poor Jimmy
No, he knew he was going to die the whole episode. He was giving his friend some advice before he died, that's it. He wasn't trying to change anyone's mind.

That's the truth. The last conversation between Jimmy and Richard sounded like a farewell... and we shouldn't forget that Jimmy was unarmed. He didn't want to fight, he accepted his own death.
@dall204 bullshit, my vote goes to Chalky White!! Mr. Winter knows what he is doing, just check up the series Sopranos, in case you haven't heard about it or seen the writer credits for it.. Director Tim Van Patten has a unique way of working with Mr. Winter.

Easy, they'll bring back flashbacks of the war and experiences shared by Harrow and Jimmy and then systematically he will go on a sniper frenzy and take out some top dogs. Jimmy was pals with Capone, that will play out somehow too don't worry. The best part about this show is that they take risks. Finally a show that doesn't need happy endings. About time.

@MrTomorg6 That's simple.... two words. Al Capone. Van Alden went to Cicero, in 1923 that became Capone's headquarters. Season 3 will take place 16 months after the events of season and for you you people out there jimmy will still be ded! there is going to be no dream sequence. Capone will save the show. I miss Jimmy already. Reminded me of a Chris Moltisanti :( remember who killed him? Tony... and nucky killed jimmy... see the connection. sopranos and boardwalk are very alike.
Yeah, Jesse gets away with so much in BB when he should have probably been killed by Walt by season 2. This show is doing it better. Killing the characters we love because it's NECESSARY
@CuriousWhale If you read an interview done recently with Vincent Piazza you will see Scorsese has a bigger role than you think, He watches a cut of every episode and approves all scripts.

I cried my eyes out in total horror & disbelief...I just can't watch it anymore. And after EVERYTHING he did for Nucky, especially the trial...it so should have been Eli...How can this show continue without Jimmy Darmody?? To hell with season 3 and HBO - they've LOST so many viewers over this & GOOD!!
And I'm so disgusted with Gretchen Mol not even morning Jimmy's death. Maybe she's avoiding this by taking his son as her own but this sucks too. (Possible regretful memory clips to come??)

Those of you who say I'm never watching this again are idiots......there are so many great parts on this series other than him and he was in fact a great character but the whole outcome is real it's not like nucky was gonna just keep him around after all that happened also you have to remember that he caused problems in season 1 for nucky. It also tells us that this series has guts and will not hesitate to kill off more lead roles and if you saw ep 1 of season 3 you know what im talking about

Wasn't it obvious the show was leading up to his death? Maybe not season 2 but eventually. It shouldn't have been eli since he never was the brains of the operation and it would be difficult to control jimmy. Besides the fact he begged for forgiveness. it's the only family nucky has left. Jimmy had to go.
So Jimmy helped kill the people ready to put nucky in prison, but his brother lies and Jimmy takes the fall? I wish Nucky had made the right choice. I hate that Jimmys boygrows up alone

I so AGREE with EVERYTHING you said here...this totally SUCKS, it was HORRIBLE & brutally SAD. Michael Pitt is an incredible actor & musician. There is no Boardwalk Empire without Michael Pitt and I'm also DONE with it for good..I wish more people would boycott this show over this and send HBO a big message!!
