- Hello everyone,
We're back with a little tutorial for you all. Long story short, a trainee was going to test drive a Prius c, and it won't start. So, I decided to do a video on how to Jump Start a Prius c. It is a little different than starting a standard Prius Liftback, but still similar. Here ya go.
As always, if anyone has any questions about this video, our dealership, Toyota's, anything, let me know. If there is anything you want to see, just leave a comment below. Thanks for Watching.

Good video, only thing I would correct is that there is no Alternator in a Prius c. The 12-volt battery (also called auxiliary battery in the owners manual) is recharged by the DC-to-DC converter, which is powered by the high voltage hybrid battery. You shouldn’t typically have to let the engine kick on to get the 12-volt battery charged up unless your hybrid battery is completely depleted, in which case the engine being on will charge the hybrid battery and the hybrid battery will charge the DC converter, and then on to the 12-volt battery. Maybe this was the case on a car lot but on a typically car that gets driven fairly often, there should always be a charge in the hybrid battery.
If the actual engine doesn’t kick on, you can definitely hit the accelerator and it will kick the engine on.
you'd think the car would know the battery was low and kick on the combustion engine right away. . .
Thank you you just saved me so much money and anxiety this morning! Your public service video is much appreciated!!
Thank you very much, this video might save my life,
I lost my car key, an auto repair tried to locksmiths it, but failed, the dashboard doesn't turn on when I press the start button, after taking it to Toyota center they said the car in security mode, ECU needs replacement, . My question is would this jump-start works?
My 2012 Prius C does not have the easy access in the fuse box so you have to jump start from the battery.
Is the positive terminal accessible under the hood in a 2015 Prius C?
Thanks from an old guy in the Polar Vortex with a used 2015 C!
Came across this video right now because I just got off work and was ready to just finally takeoff and go home to catch up on some much-needed sleep. But wait! I forgot to turn off my headlights when I rushed into work this morning so now I have a dead car😂😂 currently waiting 30 minutes for a coworker to get off of and help me. Thank you!!
Worth noting that this does not work for 2012 Prius-C for anyone wondering why they can't find the terminal.
Just jump started my stranded wife’s Prius in the middle of the night thanks to this video. Thank you for your service.
is there a way to see from the console if the batterie 12V is discharging before it's running out of batterie ?
What can stop it from star or nothing come up in side of it aqua at all want to know what is the problem ?
For some reason there is no jump terminal. Just an open area. Is there any way to fix this?
Mine was too dead to activate the jump point. Battery was at 3 volts but the jump point showed nothing. I imagine that there is a relay inbetween or something, jumping it from the battery worked.
After the car was activated the jump point showed nominal voltage. Oh the irony....
It does not have a alternator. It does have a generator and a drive motor
Wow. I wish all the other people showing ways of digging to the battery under seats would show this instead! Thanks!!
Thank you for the helpful video. I have a question though, the car failed to start using the initial method so we had to go look for the battery under the passenger seat to start it. Is there a reason for that?
Yes, there are some good reasons for this actually. The main reason is to save space under the hood and allow the prius to be more compact. This also has the added benefit of lowering the CG. In non-hybrid cars, the stater motor requires much higher current than what the prius 12V ever needs to provide so a long battery cable is not as much an issue for the prius.
Não falo inglês mas seu vídeo me ajudou a ligar meu carro Toyota AQUA obrigado 🙏 ganhou um escrito no se canal
Obrigado pelas amáveis palavras. É um prazer ajudá-lo.
extremely helpful, just what I needed to know w a friends 2016 Prius C thanks so much! would have gotten a major migraine without this info haha
Nicely explained! Thnx!
My model didn’t have the easy access 😭 Still thanks for this video it was very helpful once I reached the 12V battery. 💪
Thanks so much for this demonstration. I haven’t had this issue, but now I feel prepared if it happens.
Thank you so much
I believe you can do a lot of expensive damage if you get the battery polarity wrong - so be carefull!
thanks for the video, just a small correction, the Prius does not have an alternator
Then what is charging the non-hybrid battery??
The hybrid battery 🙂
You are the MVP! THANK YOU! Our car didn't have the positive charge thing under the hood so we had to use the 12v under the car seat. It worked and the car is now running after being dead for 3 months. Would never have known what to do without this video.
hey man can we contact soon, i have the same problem and i don't have that positive thing either so i need urgent help
My 2013 Prius C sat in the garage during past 15 months. Thanks to this video, I follow the steps and can have the car power up with a jump start cable connect to the car next to it. Then I drive it out for couple minutes to regen more power. Thank you!
I bought a DBPower 600A18000 mAh inexpensive ($59) Lithium jump starter on Amazon that I keep in the car at all times
Very small, can start a 6L Diesl truck, keeps a 100% charge for months, no need for cables or potential damage jump starting with another vehicle, something you might want to look into
Tks it is very helpful
God how you open the litle box
Extremely helpful, many thanks 😊
Not helpful is Toyota placing the 12v battery in a difficult to access place
Super helpful, thank you!
Thanks, this helped me today on a 2012 Prius C. 2012 Model is not having jumper under the hood. So I started with that 12 v battery under back seat.
For anyone confused about connection of the negative side. Any unpainted metal connected directly to the engine (immovable) and non-painted will do.
That's a good tip! Thanks for clearing it up.
The position of the negative terminal this video shows actually didn't work for me, but I moved it to the knobby bit just above and it immediately did.
Helpful.. But the Prius doesn't have an alternator
OMG I should have watched this video first. SMH
Thank you
Thank you
We have a problem, actually after few weeks I tried to start Aqua but it didn't, I watched your video and try to jump start Aqua car I successfully start Aqua car and drive it 2 kilometers and Park it garage, and after 1 hour I tried to start Aqua car but it didn't start, please tell me what can I do for it.
I hate hybrids. They're too quiet.
Cool
Yes 2013 Prius won’t start.make a weird noises how do you fix?
Fantastic Video!
Showed the easy way, and where the battery actually is! Thank you much!!!
This video just saved my butt with my 2018 Prius C. Thx
I think you showed high voltage. Hybrid battery not 12 V. The 12 v is in there trunk
If your dashboard lights come on but the car won't start- this jump start fixed it for me. THANK YOU!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. I'm a towy and had a dead Prius C/Aqua (2015) today. Connected the jump pack as shown which caused clicking and humming, but cranking or starting didn't happen. Looked for the 12V battery under the back seat but found removal of seat and cover panel too involved. So it has been towed to the dealer. These things are too fickle...
This was very useful. Just got a prius a week ago and my car wouldn't start after work today. And since neither I nor security knew what to do with a prius.... Google.
Is that how you fix it when it says ‘low battery traction’ on a 2012 Prius C ?
Thank you. I am about to check one out and this will help me out to test drive one before buying it.
Thankyou so much for a life saving video. Keep posting good work.
thank for the info.
I do have a problem that i need help with. I removed the cover in back seat to access the 12 v battery. However putting the cover back on and the screws is near impossible for me.
I dont know if i am doing something wrong, but the screws wont fit back in. is there a correct way of doing this?
The placement can be funny with the cover. Make sure the screws were not damaged when they were taken out. Again, another safe bet is to go to a certified dealer and have them put it back on for you.
Thanks!
Very nice video, thank you for sharing. May son’s car doesn’t start, thus will help us.
If the Prius is in "ready" mode and you need the engine to turn on, just press the accelerator pedal down and hold it there.
Great video! Very helpful. Thanks!
Appreciate this video; very clear and a good tutorial. Useful.
Thank you so much!! I pulled over to jump start someone only to realize I had no idea how to do that with this car. I felt terrible haha
Why is the car so loud when the engine kicks on ??
My car didn't have the positive terminal in it, but it has a nut at the same place, should i connect it that way?
Instruction unclear ,my prius c blew up
Thank you soooo much it was really helpful video you saved my prius🙏🙏
what happens if you reverse polarity?
Big bang
This thing has no alternator buddy
Can Prius C jump-start other cars ????
I would put the car into maintenance mode so it runs the gas motor all the time
Awesome! Thanks for the demo, I have a Prius C 2012, and I think the 12 V battery is dead, I had it jump start and it works, but after using it for a day, the next day it won't start again. The auto part store is asking me, what type of Prius C I have. The store is asking me if this is V1-2-3- or 4? How will find that model? By the way, the battery is the original battery since I bought the car in 2012. thanks!
Prius C came in four trim levels: 1,2,3 & 4. They all use the same 12V battery. I would recommend getting a price from your nearest Toyota dealer on the 84 month Truestart Battery for your Prius. It may surprise you how competitive the price is. I've also written a blog post about why the Truestart battery is best for your Prius bit.ly/3sD9ciW
@@lakecharlestoyota Thank you for the recommendation and response.
It did not work for me! Mine did not start.....used a friend's car but nothing
Sometimes batteries won't recharge and they have to be replaced. I'm sorry it happened to you.
Thank you! Very helpful, didn't know what to with (-) . :)
My model didn’t have the easy access 😭 Still thanks for this video it was very helpful once I reached the 12V battery. 💪
Thank you. That was really helpful.
Thank you so
Much this help me a lot
A thousand blessings be upon you and your kin. This is exactly the information I needed to jumpstart our Prius C. Many days have I spent trying to glean this info from the Web Deity. You also supplied the location of the auxiliary battery. More gratitude upon you.
Sorry it took so long to find our video. Thank you for the feedback and best wishes, John!
Thanks, you saved me!
Thank you
Engine very clean😄😄😄
How can I do
Thank you so much . Help so much !!!
cheers chasps, 12 hours into 2022 and NEEDED this
Glad this was helpful - hope your year turns around soon!
which battery can you use to jump?
thanks for the video
What year was this one? Does it matter the year of car? or are they all the same location ? Regardless of the year...
The concept is the same across most Toyota hybrids, Howard. The exact locations may vary.
Lake Charles Toyota thank you for taking the time to answer me ...much appreciated..✅
many thanks for sharing!
Thanks have learnt a lot through this video
appreciate you watching
Very helpful . Thank you
What a life saver.
Thanks man, this is really helpful:)
Thank you sir
Hello!! Is the 12 V battery the hybrid battery?
no, the hybrid is much larger and is mounted under the rear seat
@@lakecharlestoyota Thanks
@@lakecharlestoyota hi there. So both the 12v and hybrid battery are under the rear seat?
Thank you so much for the tutorial!
How can I reset the battery to remove the check engine light?
I always recommend having a mechanic or dealership remove a check engine light for you. There may be some issues with your vehicle that need to be checked.
Thank you very much!
Yes. It is the same system.
The system should also reads the spare tire. I recently had that issue with a 2009 Highlander.
If you want the better sound system, find a Toyota with the JBL upgrade. Amazing sound.
I hate the camera moving, wavering all over the place
Thank you. I may not need to dig under the rear seat.
