    I recently had this happen when I was at a hardware lumber yard cutting some wood I needed. I left my blinkers on not realizing that that is actually being powered by the actual 12 volt battery and apparently I can drain it pretty quickly if you leave them on for too long. But I thought maybe if I just shut off the car for a while completely maybe the hybrid battery would trickle charge the 12 volt battery? I mean I have a 2018. Not really sure how the whole system works but it was the only thing I could think to do. Only had the car for a few weeks now and surprisingly I was able to get it to start again. Plus the hybrid battery was nearly full so even increased my mileage a bit poking through the rest of the lumber yard back to the entrance. I know this thing has a little over 100,000 mi on it and I know the car doesn't use a alternator so maybe I also need a new 12 volt battery. But I wonder would this car support something like one of those like car starter systems that you can plug into the 12 volt adapter just to give it enough to start the regular thing?

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  2 года назад

      Yes you can use Jump start to start this car. This car needs less juice (CCA) to start as compared to other car.
      Your car does have an alternator. The only cars which are fully electric don’t have alternators and main battery charges the small battery

    What about when the car shows absolutely NO sign of life? I bought a battery charger from Amazon, tried charging mode, tried repair mode, actually got the volts up to 12.5 and the battery charge level was going up finally after the "repair" mode but it's still not doing jack when I put it in and try to start. I only get a red light on the keyfabs when I press, that's the only reaction I can get from it. Even the electronic door locks aren't working. I'm just hoping it has nothing to do with my hybrid battery, just the front one it seems. But I did replace the big battery a couple years ago, and my daughter left the back light on last time before it died. So there's a brief history on it! Any ideas?

    • @HowToDoitright

      Take the battery to auto zone. They will test for free by putting a load. You can also do a test by jumpering the car to another car and leave the other car on with cables connected. Wait about 10-15mins and see if your car starts. Both car needs to be on.

    Hi, i will try your trick tomorrow. Yet, i have two questions : 1/ does this trick damage the 12v battery even more ? 2/ if the 12v battery is not at all responsible of starting the engine, why is it that the fact of not using it for electronics such as light and so on will help the engine to start ? I mean if it has an impact, it means that yes, it is at least in part responsible for giving power to start the engine ? Thanks for your reply.

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  3 года назад

      No it won’t damage the battery or anything.
      12v battery is what start the engine or drive unit so it’s needed.

    • @ithrinej
      @ithrinej 3 года назад

      @@HowToDoitright thanks for your reply, so if i understand it well, the 12v battery is the only battery that will start the engine (the 201v battery has no role in that) but then, once it is started, the 12v battery wont have any role in the car moving anymore and the 201v battery will be responsible for making it move ? Is that correct ? If not how is it ? Thanks for your knowledges

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  3 года назад

      @@ithrinej no that is incorrect. Not sure where you getting this information from but totally incorrect. The 12v battery provides power to all other electrical components headlights stereo etc along with supplying power to engine (spark plugs for example).

    • @ithrinej
      @ithrinej 3 года назад +1

      @@HowToDoitright well i get this informations from what i am understanding and infering from your video and answers. Then since you are saying that only the 12v battery is giving the power supply for the engine to start and to moove, what do you mean in your video when you say that "the engine is kicks on by the bigger battery", what do you mean by "kick on", or "prank" then ? Those words are those that make me confused since on the other hand, you say that the small battery (12v) is the one that launched and moove the engine. So it is probably just a matter of language : english is not my first language and mechanics not my field, so vocabulary related to it, even less. So then, just, what do you mean by the engine being "pranked" or "kicked on" by the high voltage battery ? Nice day !

      Ah ok well don’t get too much in to technical part. If your car isn’t starting then just replace the 12v battery and you will be fine. Another way of testing 12v battery is by a volt meter or load test.

    I came in here because I want to help someone who has the same problem as mine. Just recently my 2008 Prius went completely dead even after changing to a new battery. There was no life, nothing at all. I had to ask my friends to give me a jump. After watching many RUclips videos I found out that one of my fuse was gone. When you open the fuse box, at the right under C section, there are two blue no.15 fuses. I changed the second one from the top. After that I also had to tighten up my negative volt battery which is in the trunk attached to the back of the car. Make sure you unscrew the negative volt before putting on the new fuse. After that it came to life. Hope it helps someone.

    I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?

      Iam charging it right now. Right when I connected the jump starter portable unit all lights came on. Tried to started but no luck yet. The portable charger says battery is at 25%, so I guess I have to wait a while. Can I start car while charging or I have to disconnect cables first?

    so i have a question because earlier tonight me my niece and my brother were at the drive in theater seeing clifford we accidently left on the head lights which drained the 12v battery i noticed this when i saw the computer screen flickering at this point my brother tried to start the car it would not start so he called aaa for assistance and while we were waiting we turned everything off in the car and took out the keys we sat for like 15 20 minutes then my brother and niece had to go to the restroom as they were on there way i git in the driver seat with the keys and was suddenly able to start my car i am assuming that while everything was off the high voltage battery gave the 12v battery a jump and thats why i was able to start my car in this event do i still need to replace the 12v or is it fine once the car starts and it gets charged and also the battery meter on the computer screen is that not for the high voltage battery and not the 12v please let me know if my assumption's are correct and if i need to replace my 12v battery thanks and also about the battery meter on the screen

      I don't believe the HV battery can charge the 12v battery when the car is off.
      More likely when you switched off the headlights, the 12v battery was able to recover some voltage. This can be enough for the computer to boot up and at that point it probably is recharging the 12 v from the HV battery.
      In the manual of my gen 3 2010 Prius page 539, there is an emergency procedure for starting the car when the 12v battery is low and will not go into Ready mode.
      I discovered this one day while waiting for the AAA guy to come and jump my Prius. Virtually no one reads the manual, so almost no one knows about this.
      I posted this separately above.

    Go to Toyota Dealer to buy the battery, its warranty is 7 years at least pro-rated of course....but it should be the same 12v battery originally installed in the Prius and the price is cheaper than other brand ,,,just go to Toyota dealer,,,it is cheaper!

    I tried this with my 2006 Prius when the battery was COMPLETELY dead, no lights, no dash functions. Holding the brake pedal down caused no pumping sound. I attempted it with several wait times, 20 seconds, 45 seconds, etc, nothing happened. So, I guess this video only applies if you have a marginal 12V battery. I was able to jump the car from another battery and get it going, but that was the only way.

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  Год назад

      Yes of course this is not for a dead battery. This method doesn’t generate electricity but reserve whatever juice is left in battery to start the car. If it’s completely dead you will need to charge it

    It'd be nice if Toyota could figure out a smarter implementation of their power up sequence and cut out all the ancillary circuits during the power up process.
    Even the old cars with key switches figured it out, by cutting power to all the accessory circuits when starting, to give maximum power to the starter, which was the crucial component.
    After it started, the power to all the other circuits would be turned on.
    Surprised that Toyota designers didn't figure it out, as it's a pretty basic concept.

    Almost nobody is aware that the Toyota engineers made a special procedure to force the HV battery to recharge an over discharged 12v battery that is unable to start the car but can still boot the computer, and go into accessory mode.
    This is what they say on page 539 of my 2010 Prius user's manual:
    "
    (Section:) Steps to take in an emergency
    (Sub-Topic: ) Emergency start function
    When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the “POWER” switch is functioning normally.
    [Step 1] Set the parking brake.
    [Step 2] Set the “POWER” switch to the ACCESSORY mode.
    [Step 3] Push and hold the “POWER” switch for about 15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
    Even if the hybrid system can be started using the above steps, the system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer.
    "

    • @eideticgoone7035
      @eideticgoone7035 2 года назад +1

      The key takeaway here is that this procedure is done in ACCESSORY mode, not
      start mode.
      This is different from the procedure in this video which takes place in START mode. It is possible that while waiting in the HV battery will charge the 12V battery. One could check this with a volt meter across the 12v battery.
      I took this excerpt from the official user manual:
      assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/om-s/OM47668U/pdf/OM47668U.pdf (p. 549)
      I discovered this when my car wouldn't start and I had time to read my manual while waiting for the AAA guy to come and jump start me. I was able to start the car before he came without the jump start and I save a AAA call.

    Has anyone tried this on a second gen (2004-2009)? I sat in my car with the engine off, and headlights on once. Tried to start it and was met with just a sickly clicking and dim dash display. I had to climb over the back seat (because the rear hatch wouldn't totally release) and get jumper cables onto the 12v battery. Started right away, but what a pain! So I wonder if your method works on a 2004?

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  Год назад

      Yes it works. The only thing is if you have overly drained your battery it won’t work. This is mainly for batteries that was on the verge of dying but still have some juice left. You just have to make sure all source of power is off like headlights, sound system, wipers,internal external light pumps etc. this gives all that used powder to start the car and then alternator takes over.
