    I love these videos. I took up flying in my 40's in '06, under Light Sport, just for the recreational experience and I flew so much as a business traveler, I felt if there were ever an in flight emergency with one of the pilots, I could help out which thankfully never happened.
    I did live thru two in flight emergencies and two ground incidents, all but one minor due to the way they were handled though one nearly resulted in an off field landing because of fog and fuel starvation on our small Beech airliner.
    My nerves were frayed after that, had the flight not been caught up in O'Hare traffic delays, our pilots would not have ended up in unexpected weather
    I love this video because it shows what flying really is--a safe, fun profession or past time with now modern avionics so the biggest fear -- getting lost, just is not possible. In all my time in the air as a business traveler, even on the most crowded flight, connecting through the most crowded airports, I always felt a euphoria at my destination knowing "know way my grandparents could have traveled this fast in their day" and my parents did not until the mid 60's when we flew often with them between LA and SF.
    I was once shopping in Phoenix when I heard what I thought was a jet overhead and it turned out to be a Pilatus, sounding exactly the same, it was on base for Goodyear airport. It's a cool aircraft--280 KTS is pretty good groundspeed, and if you get a boost from winds, you get groundspeeds like the Citation.
    I've never handled anything under Light Sport that could cruise more than 115 knots or so, and in chop, I would trim for a lower airspeed than that, so doing what you do, getting your passengers to their destinations so fast, must be an awesome feeling, because I always felt awesome driving home after a 115 knot flight just working the pattern or doing some local flying.

    • @GrantBaker

      Thanks for sharing John! Aviation has become so commonplace that many forget that it’s the magic carpet we only dreamed of until 120 years ago. And since it’s my job, it can start to feel that way to me sometimes. But when I’m able to share a flight with people that don’t get to experience it very often, I am taken back to how I felt on my first flights and am reminded how truly incredible flying is! I’m glad I’m able to do that through these videos also!

    Nice fly catch mate! I was conducting skydive ops years ago in a Pilatus Porter. Like your flight, I had a fly in the cockpit. Once we got to Flight Levels he was sitting on the glare shield, at max take off power, but the air was too thin for him to fly up there. I was laughing so hard! If he had an expression on his face, I'm sure it would've been one of total confusion! Hehe.

    • @GrantBaker

      🤣That’s awesome! How did you like those beta descents?

    • @timjames1274
      @timjames1274 Год назад +1

      @@GrantBaker Totally nuts. 70deg nose down @ 105kts, hanging in the harness. Crazy. But it would slip out of beta at 120kts, and the Vne was 149kts, so you had to be on the ball in that situation to get the nose up fast. The best feeling as a Porter pilot for me was learning to land in full beta, from top of decent at FL140 all the way down to the runway in 90secs. We would beat the skydivers down to the ground, which I think is unique in skydiving. Full beta landings are really scary at first, but when you learn the beta flight envelope, and speed bleed rates in the beta flare, it was really a special experience as a pilot. I was blessed to be able to fly that amazing machine. But, I always dreamed about flying the PC-12, especially during long ferry flights! So thanks for sharing your experiences mate. Greatly appreciated. I'm living vicariously through your videos! LOL!!

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  Год назад +1

      Oh man, that sounds like quite the experience! It’s hard to imagine what flying a beta descent AND landing would feel like. That roundout and flare must be pretty abrupt.

    • @timjames1274
      @timjames1274 Год назад

      @@GrantBaker Yeah mate. It happens fast. You enter the flare at around 100kts, and you have a pretty short window to get the wheels down, but it is surprisingly easy, thanks to those wizards at Pilatus. They really created something special with the Porter. And they only just stopped making them, after 60+ years of production. Simply amazing! Looking forward to your next video mate. Thanks for sharing your flying experiences! Keep up the great work!! :)

      Not from there, but I grew up Mennonite and went to a Mennonite college. That’s the only way I can remember hearing it!

    The doctor killer........... + patient + nurses ....... !

      I wouldn’t call the airplane a doctor killer based off one accident. We don’t know enough about that accident yet to determine if it was a problem with the airplane, but one thing we do know is that statistics show that the PC12 is the safest single-engine airplane ever built.

      3 resent incidents .... single pilot ops in imc ......it appears the auto-pilot fairly easily jumps out.....

      Also appears in fairness to pc12 ops .... health insurance companies are happy to play russian roulette ....SINGLE PILOT MED OPS SHOULD BE BANNED.

      I haven’t experienced that issue personally but I have heard of it. There’s only 6 PC-12 incidents+accidents in the NTSB docket in the last 10 years. Of those, 2 with fatalities, 2 minor injuries, 2 no injuries. 28 total NTSB records since 2001. While we should always strive for zero accidents, I’d still say that’s a great record and far, far from warranting labeling the airplane a killer. For comparison, 30 people are killed by lightning every year. Cows kill about 20 people every year.

    180 knots is pretty slow.

    • @GrantBaker

      Because of lower air density at higher altitudes, indicated airspeed (the 180kts on the airspeed tape) is slower than the speed you’re actually moving through the air. On this flight, 183knots indicated was 266knots true airspeed.

    You should worry more about flying the plane than performing for RUclips!! That was a pretty rookie mistake calling tower on the wrong frequency!!
