When I was I 6 year old in 1963 I marched to this song dressed as a “ drum Major” twirling my baton in a talent contest. I didn’t win but the theme has left a memory that is so special between my dad and I. He was the one the rehearsed and taught me how to March and twirl my baton.
I was in London several years ago for the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. The band played this as the soldiers marched to the Palace. It gave me cold chills!👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

One Sunday when living in Thailand my best friend, her son and her driver visited the main site on the River Kwai. We visited English and Dutch graves in the islands with their sorrowful messages. We applauded at hearing most American dead had been flown to Hawaii to be buried on American soil at this very sad place.

Forty or so years ago I saw the film at the NFT in London. Unfortunately there was a party of French school kids there, too. The music started, the men marched through the jungle - and the French kids laughed, & whistled contemptuously. Obviously need to up-date their history books. I don't know who they think gave sanctuary to de Gaulle, or which broadcasting organisation gave him air time to broadcast to France, or from which country the French Resistance were supplied, not to mention which island managed to hold out long enough for a liberating force to be organised. Can't stand the arrogrant ........ Quite like the Normans (irony) - at least they allow the British Cemetery to say 'Those Whom William Conquered Liberate You'. I marched to this during graduation from Navy boot camp in San Diego in December 1960. I hated marching. To make it worse, my right legging strap broke, and I kept stepping on the buckle. A seagull crapped on my white hat and the right shoulder of my dress blues. After passing in review, we went back to our barracks where my company commander complemented me, "I'm proud of you, Haire. Out of a thousand men on the parade ground, you were the only one in step." The sarcasm was obvious.
I was there, US Army 1968-69 I walked across the famous bridge. I walked through the remains of the death camp. I prayed at the memorial. I swam in the River Kwai. I rode a train pulled by a steam locomotive up to the village of Nam Took, border with Burma.
No matter what brought me here. This is good music and those who bicker about Expendables vs. Bridge on the river Kwai probably never heard about the generational gap.

This song perfectly represents the British military. Starts out as happy jainty tune then about halfway through turns into evil boss music and then ends on a triumphal note.
This music is so motivational (to start a task with it in your mind ) and sad in the same time (about the continous routine , of army in this movie , or a job you may not like , in general )

No applause at that sad place. Our driver, my friend's employee was part of the Japanese occupation of Thailand during WWII. Our help was all Thai.
