My favorite coin ever followed by the one once palladium for obvious reasons. I was fortunate enough to inherent a complete book my grandfather but together in the 70s im tempted to have my 16d graded but it's something special to me that my grandfather put it together with his own hands. He passed in 1991
I've just started collecting Mercury Dimes. Very insightful and interesting video. Although it looks like I'm 5 years late to the party. I'm sure I'll still learn something here.
I love this series as well; and especially for older, classic, silver coinage- it has possibly; the most possibilities for growing your collection and bank roll!! And maybe I am completely wrong, but buying them from "junk silver" bags at coin dealers, is an excellent way to get high grades and varieties (possibly low mintage key-dates) at next to nothing, but spot price!
BlueRidgeSilverhound $100 melt value??? Like 60 to 70 Mercs dude!?! That is awesome, the thirties S and D's are so overlooked, and not even given a second look... I mean, I am always looking for 30,31,32,33 especially with a mint mark, any denomination really!!
Most people don't have that kind of money to spend on rare or high quality coins, especially if they are young or starting out. I say buy what you can afford, enjoy the hobby, they will always bring a return in some form. You can easily go broke collecting coins so don't follow that advice if you are not able to.
I've been a coin collector for over 40 years now and have read many books and articles written by the old time experts. The general consensus of these guys is that coin collecting can be broken down into 2 groups. Coins 1934 and newer and coins 1933 and older. Before 1934 very few people saved BU rolls of coins, so anything before this date will be substantially rarer than most later date(d) coins, especially coins in uncirculated condition. Exceptions would be Morgan and Peace dollars which were vastly overproduced in their time and tended to amass in bags in bank vaults throughout the country. Which is why these two series are still widely available in Mint State condition at a reasonable cost.
Exceptions to this rule are coins from the first year or last year of a particular series. These years were saved more often than coins dated from the middle of the series. Other classic series coins to collect with good future potential and fairly reasonable costs are Buffalo Nickels, Indian Cents, Pre 1933 Lincoln Cents and Walking Liberty halves.

As usual, your videos are suberb. I also collect the mercury dimes and often go through the "junk silver". I have found several good errors in the junk silver piles. The junk silver is a good way a beginning collector can get a start in filling up a coin album.
Thank you very much for sharing. Question: many experts say that more 1916d Mercuries exist in all grades than 1920p exist. If this is so, do you think that the general public may revalue the 1920p more highly, closing the gap between it and the 1916d?
Nice! I have all the Mercury dimes from 1939 onward uncirculated. I have the 1936, 1937, 1937 S, 1938, and 1938 S also uncurculated. 17 of my uncirculated Mercury dimes are full bands and my 1943 D looks like it has a small die crack, which is interesting. My 1943 S also has very attractive golden-like toning. The only pre-1934 one that I have that is higher grade is a 1923 with full bands, about an AU58 or maybe a weak MS60. All of my other pre-1934 Mercury dimes are VF or lower.

Do you think coin rolls are a good idea for collecting? How do you start?
Mercury dimes have been pretty much out of circulation since the Hunt Brothers cornered the silver market in late 1979/early 1980. Up until the late 70s, a complete set of all the Mercury dimes except the 1916 D, 1921, 1921 D, 1926 D, the ones from 1931, the overdates from 1942, and the 1945 S micro S could have been found in circulation through coin roll hunting and a lot of patience. Back then, silver dimes were about as common in circulation as copper cents are today and Mercury dimes still made up about 25% of the silver dimes left in circulation.
I agree 110% on your Mercury Dime comments I like you have completed it about 2 1/2 times plus lots of other date (Tho I have NO 16-d yet) . And as far as Thumbs up/down, in my mind you have never put out a vid that I felt compelled to give you a Thumbs down. There have been a few that I wasn't really interested in and I did not do either up or down. You have been 99%+ THUMBS UP for me. On another topic have you heard anything in refference to a new updated Vol 2 of the Cherry Pickers guide? Keep up the good work and Thank You for all you do.
Mercury is exactly what I'm working on again. Making myself stick to MS 55 or better so it's gonna be a while!
What value do you think a 1916 in AG or Good grade has? Is the dime now just part of Lowball collecting now?
I'm pretty happy I stopped on your channel.I just found a plastic bag of mercury dimes,there has to be about 150/200 of them and they are in very nice shape.After watching I have check on those dates you mentioned .I happen to love this design .Don't the wings mean freedom of thought?I guess that's why I like them.

I have many mercury dimes but at best they are in very fine condition
BRS: I am a starter who inherited all sorts of coins and has no idea what to do with them. You said the the L/H dime teens are prohibitively expensive. I was given 12 of these (including four 1916's; No D). Another video has told me the grade of most of these coins is approx AG. Are they now worth nothing more than face value? You will probably hear from me on other videos b/c I have many questions (obviously) and you are a great teacher! Since you are teaching about older dimes, let me ask you this since nobody has taught about it. Is a sitting liberty dime dated 1891 worth anything?

I’m looking for the FSB’s. So far I’ve cherry picked the hell out of everything I find. So far my most expensive Merc has been the 2016 1/10 oz gold…no chance at an FSB there despite an SP70 grade.
