Here's the thing with Patrick. He didn't attempt to dunk the ball down low every time but he killed other centers with his excellent ability to shoot the ball. This made those centers come out farther away from the bucket which in turn could possibly open up other Knicks to get inside. Patrick was a phenom period. Got to remember most clutch plays are made by players that can shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. Patrick could do just that. One of the all time greats no matter what.
The big fella running the court multiple times. God I love the real centers of yester yr's.. Ewing , Oluaujowon, Admiral, Zo, Daugherty, Dikembe, Smits, Shaq..etc Good stuff.. Ewing was outstanding on both ends.
Patrick Ewing was a great center. Lived in NY for four years in the early 90s, and he was amazing to watch as he always made the Knicks into contenders.
I was at this game wearing my Ewing jersey. I remember this game really well. Patrick was the man. On a side note Kevin Calabaro and Marques Johnson were the best NBA play by play team I ever heard.
True since chamberlain Russell jabbar and olajuwon among others like o Neal Mikan Malone reed Robinson r not playing the I'm a fanaticnof Ewing's and this game was great with his stats the only players I like better than ewing r chamberlain Russell jabbar olajuwon and mourning
Honestly he would be MVP and the best player with LeBron past his prime and arguably Durant as well. He’d go toe-to-toe with Giannis. In his prime Ewing was every bit as athletic and had a better jumpshot. Embiid is just a bigger Ewing and I’m sure Patrick would relish dropping 40 on him.😁
actually ewing was also etile player, eventhough i agree that those 3 were better but not much better!the amzing is that he had this performance when was 34 and not his prime!
This highlight reel definitely defined how great Patrick Ewing was a center. The only big men I will state that were better than Patrick when he played were: Kareem Abdul Jabbar of course. And then Hakeem Olajuwon and then Shaq. That was it! David Robinson was a great center too in his own right. But I believe that Patrick was consistently better. Patrick was a very competitive center during his era. Not winning a ring is his only setback.
I agree putting Patrick over David. Robinson had marginally better career stats but Pat had better playoff numbers and carried his team to 2 NBA Finals appearances without having another Hall of Famer on his team EVER! Meanwhile David never got to the Finals without Duncan, a top-10 all time player!
No the slowing down was from age and knees beginning to go. He actually weighed more in the late 80s- there’s a video on RUclips where the Knicks trainer said he was 260 lbs and then dropped to his published weight of 240. The Riley/Van Gundy years were well known for intense practices and conditioning programs. Patrick was lean and muscular for the entire 90s decade.
@@atlaslion5128 I said he was lean and in great shape for the entire decade, and at 240 lbs, and he was. You bring no evidence of the contrary. knees didn’t affect his play til 93-94 and even then it was a slow decline. He remained a top-10 (most years top-5) MVP candidate until after Riley’s 1995 exit when he was 32. 96-97 he looked great. Not sure what you’re on about. Did you watch the Heat series? Dunking on Mourning, and everyone else, running out to the 3-point arc to block Tim Hardaway’s attempted game-winner, 37 and 17 in Game 7. Pat never looked significantly slower til after the 1998 wrist injury, losing all that time and conditioning on the court in addition to aging. He still played his ass off in 99 and 00 and continued to outplay 7-years-younger Mourning. 🤷♂️
@@jaymum23 Oh I never said he was totally done though. Ewing was the type of player who was very skilled offensively and it compensated for his decline physically. Still average a double double in the last seasons of the decade
@@atlaslion5128 I was only responding to the conditioning part. I never thought you said he was done though I felt you implied he slowed down a lot very quickly, which wasn’t the case- if you watch him before the wrist injury he was still a gazelle, particularly in 96-97- getting fast-break dunks, facials on younger big men, and going up to near head-at-rim level for shot blocks. After the wrist rehab he was notably slower in the 98 playoffs but he had no real basketball conditioning for 4 months, so it was to be expected. In 99 he bounced back but was older still and the Achilles was more of an issue than his knees. He didn’t gain weight in the 90s, he maintained his Riley-era slim and toned physique. Like I said he weighed more in the 80s until Pitino arrived.
ewing was very good but I never considered him better than hakeem, robinson & shaq. those were the elite centers,of the 90's in my opinion ewing was in the next tier.
timsmith1033 ewing was better than robinson in my opinion robinson saving grace was tim duncan which gave him 2 championship but before duncan many considered robinson soft but all the elite centers of the 90s would kill the so called centers today
@@ONETAKEBKLYN That’s right and Ewing even had a few dominant performances against the great Olajuwon before 1993 when his knees started to really get creaky. For a few years in the late 80s and early 90s Pat was hands-down the best center in the NBA and a top-5 MVP candidate. Aside from Shaq- bless his big heart- no one really talks about how beastly Ewing was.

yeah
one of thr best jump shooting center to ever play in the NBA. patrick ewing one of THe BEST.. the most dominant CENTERS back in the day..
yeah
One of the Most Underrated Centers Ever!
Need to give Patrick his proper credit and respect.. THE BEAST OF THE EAST...

Ironically he became a Sonic later in his career
@@wuliwei6939 I was thinking the same thing
patrick ewing would easily be the best center in today's league.

Another underrated center in this era was Felton Spencer.
Imagine if a prime Ewing played with Payton and Kemp
This was Patrick’s final career 40-point game. He had 30 40-point games in total. As of my writing this on 2/28/23, this video has 33 comments.❤

Shaq even himself admitted in the 90's Ewing was much better than him

In his prime I'd had taken him over Robinson and Shaquille !
I would take Olajuwon over these three😈
@@goldenstatewarriors4011 i agree with both of you
Lets go NYK EWING WAS BEASTING SAM PERKINS ALL GAME LONG!
I used to be so mad at Sam. A great shooting touch, but sleeping on all the other aspects of the game.
Big Pat
Here as a Knicks fan 1st and Die hard Ewing fan but what the NBA did to Seattle was wrong. SuperSonics belong in the NBA and that 90s team was nasty.
That spin move at 0:52 was similar to the spin move Olajuwon had against Pat in the NBA Finals.
Yes! I always say the same thing!
The block 1:31 was awesome
Those times were really fun to watch. Does Ewing still play? :-)
Silky jumper the best
And this is when he started gaining weight and slowing down.

Watch David Robinson and Ewing go head to head on RUclips..the both had great duels but Ewing had reL dominant games against Robinson
Robinsin was never better than Ewing period. I don't care what anyone says.
