  • Shawn Kemp in his prime...leading the Sonics in a sweep against the back-to-back champions Houston Rockets.
    The Sonics control most of the game and build up a 20 point lead with just over 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter...until the Rockets make a furious comeback to send the game into OT...Classic NBA Playoff game of the 1990's

    People don't realize how great of a player Kemp was in his prime; he brought excitement to the game. Kemp is one of my favorite NBA players, thanks for all the memories Shawn cause as a teenager my friends and I tried to do all of your dunks on a eight foot rim, lol.

    Shawn Kemp had one of the best playoff runs of all time this year.
    Outplayed Hakeem in the 96 WCSF, the only time Hakeem had a poor playoff series before his 98 knee injury, and swept the 2x defending champ Rockets
    - Kemp 21.8 - 13.8 - 1.5 - 0.5 - 2.3 on 50%
    - Hakeem 18.3 - 9.8 - 4.3 - 1.3 - 2.0 on 48%
    Played amazing against Karl Malone, shot almost 70%
    20.0 - 9.7 - 1.3 - 0.9 - 1.3 on *69% FG*
    - Even Shaquille O'Neal never shot better than 66% FG in a playoff series (1995 ECF), and all his shots came at the rim
    - and Kemp hit the sealing FTs in Game 7 after Malone choked
    and dropped 23-10-2-1-2 on 55% on the best team of all time in the 1996 Finals, which is better than Dirk's 2006 or 2011 Finals numbers
    if Kemp kept his 96 peak for a long time, he could have been a top 3 PF of all time behind Duncan and KG

      I think because the secound half of Shawn Kemp's career declined so sharply is why he won't be in the hall of fame rather then politics.There is no question that his career didn't have the longevity of Kevin Garnett and Karl Malone. The criticism of Kemp's game is relied so much on his athleticism that when he lost those skills through age/weight issues there was not much else left in the repertoire.

    Rockets were lucky to have not faced Seattle in 1994 and 1995. The Sonics had Dream and the Rockets number throughout his career, from back when they had Tom Chambers and X-Man to the Payton and Kemp years.

      sportjames23 please don't include the 87 series. Had Sampson not suffered those dehabilitating injuries and drug suspensions the Sonics then wouldn't have been a afterthought then. They'd destroyed champion LA the year before.
      And some bogus calls in 93 against Houston in game 7 probably was the difference between winning and losing.

    Shawn Kemp was a total package and would have been a true legend if his career was not underminded by drug addiction. At the end of the day it was his fault. Kemp was well within Hakeem's league and nearly every other legend of that era, not quite as good but by no stretch outmatched and he held his own every time.

  • @oneyedthing
    @oneyedthing 8 лет назад +13

    Houston had match up problems with Kemp and Payton. Kemp was too athletic and was able to bother Olajuwon when doubling him. And Payton was able to bother Kenny and Maxwell. Sonics had the Houston's number 1993 -1996

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 5 лет назад +1

      Seattle didn't really become a bad matchup until after they lost Thorpe. When they had Thorpe they were a half court team and afterwards they played a bit more uptempo which was also the Sonics style.

      Houston lost in 1993. And in the following season 1994 it got worse swept in Reg season with Thorpe still in the line up. Sonics just got Rockets by the throat 1993-1996

    • @ChrisM07
      @ChrisM07 4 года назад

      @@oneyedthing That series went the full 7 though and there were 2 possessions the Sonics got early in overtime that should've gone to the Rockets which affected the outcome of the last game. The following season they split 2-2, that Rockets team played the half court style which was a known achilles heel of the Sonics in that era. The Rockets with Drexler played more open court like the Sonics and they didn't have a standard PF for a while so they were more vulnerable in the interior which the Sonics were able to exploit more than other teams that played the Rockets with Perkins being a stretch 5.

    hate how Shawn wasn't rewarded by Seattle with a higher paying contract. It wasn't Kemp who failed against Denver. GP and others missing free throws hurt the most. Against the Lakers SK was awesome but Nick Van Exel out played GP and G.Karl got out coached. Then Shawn has 4 great series in 96 and gets shafted. Hou brought in Barkley and Willis to help v SK and Detlef and Hou still needed 7 games to move on.

    7:40 "Payton to the baseline... OH! Shot by Payton along the baseline!!" Classic! I remember that play by the Glove and the call by Gumbel like it was yesterday. At that point in the postseason that year I thought the Sonics were playing at a higher level than the Bulls, who were mired in a tough scrap against the Knicks. Minority opinion no doubt but I always felt the Sonics might've beaten the Bulls had they played them then rather than a few weeks later.

    • @davcar3568

      George Karl should of put Gary Payton guarding Michael Jordan from the start of the series. From memory he moved Payton to guard Jordan after Sonics were down 3-0. To be fair to Karl I can see why he was reluctant for Payton to guard Jordan despite Payton being a great defender. Chasing Jordan around takes up alot of energy that is needed on offence. Payton is a really good help defender as well and you can't really help others guarding Jordan.

    1997 Barkley was still fine. They eliminated the Sonics in 7 games. They also forgot how important Sam Cassell and Kenny Smith was in the backcourt. They did not expect the Jazz Hornacek and Bryon Russell.

      Kenny Smith was washed up in the 1995-96 season. The problem is the Rockets replaced him with Brent Price(aka "Price Krispie") who promptly blew out his knee. They were lucky Matt Maloney played as well as he did in the Sonics series. As for Cassell, unfortunately they had to give up value to get Barkley.

    In 1993 & 1996 they got ousted by the Sonics. From 1992 -1996 Sonics got their numbers. They have match up problems with the Sonics line up. That's why in 1997 they got Barkley to match up with Kemp.

I seriously think if we had not changed our uniforms/logo that the Rockets had been wearing since 1974 we would gone all the way, and I forgot too we traded 3-point master Vernon Maxwell right after the 2nd chip so we shouldn't have done that too.

Jordan also got away with alot of pushing off so his field game percetange is kind of based on this. You can add every popular player with the media how they get away with things that the average player cant get away with.

    exactly...houstons the luckiest team to ever make the finals.
    if the sonics had played their best in all the 90s playoffs, they woulda won back to back titles.
    they woulda gone to three straight finals!

    @FuShengAlex Also you are talking about a player that missed a lot of time from the court and jumped back into the game with mixed results, funny thing is look what happened the year after this after having the proper time to train and get back into the groove of Pro basketball...just saying

    I know they got swept, the Sonics earned it, don't reply to me with a bunch of hate-posts lol Plus since my name is Shawn, when we were kids I always pretended I was Shawn Kemp. Just really wish we could have seen the Rockets/Bulls matchup.

    Most people consider a man's prime to be in his 20s; not 33. Especially with his medical history at that point.

    The Rockets overestimated their team by not adding anyone while their stars got older. Even the Bulls added a few pieces to go along with MJ.

    • @doughbafett
      @doughbafett 2 года назад

      They couldn't add anyone after 1995. They were capped out and had no draft picks. The best they could do was Mark Bryant and Eldridge Recasner.
      And to compound matters, they were plagued by injuries in the 1995-96 season and were exhausted after 2 straight title runs.
      They reloaded after 1996 by trading for Barkley and signing Kevin Willis, but the edge that gained them against Seattle was erased by the talent deficit they suddenly had vs Utah.

      They could've ended it earlier if they kept Thorpe after Houston traded him their achilles heel at PF got exploited by Seattle they made Dream leave the paint often giving them the opportunity to get to the basket easily.
