- 5 Ways loosen engine oil filter
FILTERS, there are of many sizes and colors...
All have one thing in common, all are difficult to loosen
For that reason I propose...
Five ways to loosen the filters
Sometimes you can loosen by hand
Caution! the filters can be very hot
1st method - Extraction tape (the most common)
2nd method - Extractor type octopus (the most effective)
3nd method - chain Extractor
4nd method - pipe wrench , Stillson wrench or Stillsons
5th method - Make a hole to the filter and leverage with a large screwdriver
Make the hole in the back, so as not to damage the thread
Use this method as a last resort, may cause some undesirable break
Here's what you do, attach the oil filter to a large table vice and then turn the entire car around it. Works like a charm!
Looks like the best way is to have the filter about belt high with nothing around it.
exactly
Seriously tho
Lmao!
👍🏻👌🏻😂
Seriously though
If #1 worked then I wouldn't FUCKING BE HERE!
😂
I'm glad I have all these very common everyday tools just laying around.
Now try these options in a cramped up space under your car when theres a million other parts in your way around it :(. Way too frustrating.
Oh bro couldn’t have said it better myself
Only if you had that much space lmao
Don’t know what type of car you’re working on where you can fit all those tools. But for the rest of us none of that is helpful.
if only i had that much room to work around the filter then i could probably just do it by hand.
I don't think I've ever seen a bench demo for an oil filter lol
great, now show me a modern engine bay that has enough space to rotate a spanner inside it!
Same problem here.
Yep, you are on the money! It seems 'filter space' was the last thing to be calculated. I only tighten my oil filter by hand using sandpaper for a final twist.
No shit. After 38 years of PU trucks i finally bought a smaller hatchback.
Jesus Christ, the F'en engine bay hasn't enough room to see stuff, never mind work on it.
I already miss my Dodge Ram.
Exactly, most of the filter removal tools hit other parts on the engine, so you can’t really use them.
Old school mechanic here, thats a few options there, but in reality, those oil filter are in some hard to areas in getting a those tools you displayed in there. Overall just don't be cheap and buy proper tools like oil filter wrenches to get the job done, it's fast and easy, and you won't damage your knuckles.
they are never hard to loosen if the installer installs it right. First, make sure you clean the flat surface well. Then, and this is a must, put oil on the new filter gasket before installation. And third, most importantly, never, never, never, never, never use a filter wrench to install an oil filter. It says hand tighten only on the filter. Wait till the gasket makes contact with surface, and only turn 3/4 turn with your hand. Yep, only hand tighten and you will never have any problems getting them off.
This guy gets it 👍🏾
All steps failed, I've thrown my vehicle out and learnt how to walk again, FUK IT!
Try using those methods when it's actually in the engine with tons of obstables in the way
i know this guy is an idiot
Can I do the last method to tighten the brand new oil Filter?
benson b 🤣🤣🤣
Well , good luck With that .
benson b, yep use the screwdriver method to put a new one on and its already to take of next time .
I've never owned an effective oil filter wrench. They either slip (don't grab tightly enough) or require more clearance/space than is available. I've learned over the years to just not over-tighten them in the first place. Then you can remove it by hand pretty easily. When installing, just spin until contact, then another 3/4 turn and you'll never need a wrench to remove it.
That's what the filter's installation instructions says.
How many vehicles have room for a large pipe wrench? Ridiculous!
Mike Kropp lmfao
Mine does
yeah like we have all that f****** room. smh
good luck getting that big pipe wrench inside the engine bay.
Let's see you do these in a real life situation under the car and in a tight space
Thinking the same thing .
Exactly
News flash...filters aren't typically mounted on a work bench. 😯
Newsflash… it’s a demonstration dumbass
Brilliant video, thank you .needless to say, I had to go with the undesirable method as i did not have the tool 😅 it worked .Now, I promised myself to buy the tool.
All of these tools work if you have enough elbow room. That's the problem. We don't enough elbow room down at the car.
Thank you so much I was super frustrated with how I literally hand spun out the oil plug no tool but the filter was just a pain. I ended up using #5 used a pick tool and hammer and spun it off with the force of the hammer. Thankkkkk youuuuuuuu! Saved me working on it the next day.
Must be nice to have all that room to maneuver.
I successfully got it off using the rubber foam handle of my dogs fancy leash tightly around the filter with vise grip then used the handle of my ratchet to turn the vise grip pliers which were locked onto the linen and rubber strap/dog leash handle. Worked like a charm
The hammer method is for when you’ve tried like 2 things then get mad and say screw it 😂
Isn't that nice and convinient right out in the comfort of an open space and lit environment and standing up with lots of room.
If I only knew.
In my case I had none of these tools, other than a screw driver. But I didn't feel like getting showered In oil. Channel locks for the win. My dumb ass took my vehicle to Walmart to have the oil changed and holy shit did they over tightened everything. Never again. I ended up using channel locks on my filter due to where it's located I just fit them around the top of the filter and cranked on it till it came loose. I do enjoy this video. Because it helps explain what tools are out there, and how to use them to a degree. I understand this isn't under a car in tight conditions. But it gives you an idea of what tools could potentially help you in a scenario where someone else screwed you over.
Many helpful tools of which I have none LOL. The octopus one is pretty neat. Thanks
Ha,ha..You have some money right?Pay those oil places or mechanic garage places to do the oil change for you.
Thank you sir! Showed my little brother how to change his oil, my oil filter tool was too big, the place who changed his last used as much force as possible to tighten it down (as well as the bolt, what is it with car places using the hand of God to tighten bolts and oil filters?) but with your method #4, pipe wrench, pulled that sucker off in no time.
When I worked at oil can henrys every once in a while we would put one on super tight and write TAF on it. When you got one that said TAF you knew it was gunna be Tight As Fuck lmao good times
Lol I've been using the last method for too long that octopus looks great may try extraction tape on my car as well thanks
That screwdriver one is the only one that I was able to do but it worked so thank you very much
Lets just put oil filters in the worst spots possible
We did it thank you. We loosened it by hand!
Nice job!
Great video if your engine block looks like a workbench!
Mark Boyd I was thinking the same thing lls
Instructions very clear my car is now in the shop
wow if i just took my engine out so my filter wasn’t it the worst spot imaginable i might be able to use these tips, 👍🏽
Never seen that Octopus tool before, thats cool. And who can forget the Screwdriver through the Filter method. Been there.........
I bought a set of oil filter sockets on eBay,quite cheap,a nod they fit over the end of the filter and allow you to use a ratchet to remove. They work very well and don't do any damage. I also have a pair of slip jaw pliers that have a 90 degree bend on the jaws. They fit into very tight areas and remove filters easily. Hammering through the filter should only be a very last option once all possible options have been exhausted!
I have seen some oil filter brands now include a square nub on the bottom of the filter so you can get pliers on it. Pretty smart thinking, they should all come with that nub bit.
I wish I had known. I had to use boxing bandages (think that's what it is) to take my old one out
Thanks but none of this will work on tight spaces
Non of these help when you're under the car
the last one was the best!!!!.....professional fo sho!!!
I bought a special wrench for this, but it pinched right through the oil filter casing. After messing for an hour i dug up my giant pipe wrench which fitted after squeezing the filter a bit. I’m glad it started moving... Swapping the engine oil is the easy part of an engine oil change 😓
I will be doing the screwdriver method..So it can be empty..I will be buying the strap wrench..Only because I can’t tighten it up fully by hand..First time changing my oil..Thanks for sharing
You'd probably never find the room on a vehicle to use that pipe wrench.
Option 5 worked today
Thanks
That was a great video, man. Thanks for posting it!!!
I couldn't get mine off my truck because it was too large a diameter for my oil filter tool. I used a medium-small ratchet strap with both hands and worked like a charm.
Thanks for showing all the options appreciate it.
Ive got a chain extractor. It grips like a hog bite. Then i use a string to tighten it back on. Chain is by far the best one ive ever used.
have you ever had a oil filter fall off driving down the road, I have twice, hand tight, thank you Mr. Mechanic
Stephanie Booth never should happen.mauby your mehanic .
IliJA Radosevic. both times were in Tractor Trailer trucks, I drove Big Trucks for 37 years before I retired
Stephanie I have seen that happen only because the guy changing the oil didn't coat the oil ring with oil first before installing the filter
Similar to the pipe wrench, a 12" channel lock wrench - works great!
These are all good bab but when your in a tight spot their hard to use I usually take leather gloves
Amazing video...helped me a lot.. build one with the chain
Pipe wrench worked for me👍
Great video!
Wow if I had much open space like that I would do it with my teeth 🦷 but when your space very limited under the hood with no room best tool is oil pliers
Who in the hell has the much room to use those tools? I can barely fit my hand in there
+yoyo Bored - I totally agree. We just tried to change the filter on my dads Toyota Rav4 and even a midget cant fit a hand in there. In addition: Why are there still manufacturers that are making these stupid kinds of oil filters? I have a GM car where there is a metal cover over the oil filter and the metal cover has an integrated nut - so it´s a matter of 5-10 seconds to get that off.
i know, I bought this universal fit most oil filter wrench. And now i can get it off no problems. Oh well, at least is not expensive! nice video
@@sukhmaidickoff Sounds like a K&N filter.
The only filter I ever had trouble with was from my brand new 1978 Trans Am. After the first thousand miles I tried to get the filter off. Every trick I knew failed. Finally had to remove the housing with what was left of the filter.
Jordendo
screwdriver method for the win baby, i always take mines like that!!!!
I finally gave in and bought myself a filter wrench specifically for my oil filter.
My filter was so stuck that i tried several methods, and here's what I eventually did: Drill a small hole in the lowest point to drain, and another hole in the tip of the filter to let the air in so it drains faster. Once it's drained enough, figure out the best angle to jam a screwdriver into it, and drill the entry hole (I did it roughly half way along the filter). Ram or hammer a thick screwdriver into it (right through if you can). Twist. The amount of effort is much less than you think it will be, once you've got the torque of the screwdriver acting on it. Messy but it worked. Happy twisting :]
yeah because the oil filter is placed is a table every time and not underneath the car behind metal
Great video lots of good ideas to work around the problem as usually space is so limited
Yeah.. We all had that kind of working space that fit all of your special tools...
Me after trying to open the filter with hands 4:40
Try doing it with a340cid and a torsion bar passing underneath the filter. My 5 year old grandson could loosen on a work bench!
Wrap a piece of sandpaper around the oil filter and remove it by hand. That works for me !
Excellent video
a pipe wrench? I highly doubt anyone will have even remotely enough room to make that work.
I remember when I was a kid my dad and I change the oil on a station wagon. We had to use the screwdriver method. It peeled the can right off of the base. The mechanic shop had put the last oil filter on so tight that we had to use chisel and Hammer to slowly work the base off of the engine block. What a nightmare
That sounds so awful. Never understood why shops feel the need to tighten up bolts and filters as they do - after my first few shop oil changes I've always done it myself, and always will. Not to mention I have very little trust they're doing it correctly.
Wrapping an old timing belt or v belt tight around the filter body and grip tight with a pair of mole grips or vice grips. This will remove filter without any damage. Thorough cleaning to improve friction always a good first step.
You can also use the leather belt you use on your pants. The thing is that most of the methods used in the video will only work if you have plenty of space around the filter. Most of the newer cars hardly have any space around the filter. I always use my leather belt and it has never fail me.
i.rodriguez only problem is my pants would fall down! I have invested in the special sockets that fit on the end of the filters, they fit great and can use existing ratchets on them.
hahaha
Pipe wrench used is easy to use if nothing is in the way. Demonstrate it on a vehicle, be hard to get at for most.
hi that's very helpful video all of it made sense except last method you use a chisel & spike(rod?) after it punctures shouldn't you mention that hot(potential) dirty oil will come out? i think u could have used the same spike thing as the handle for twisting it off as well is that right? couldn't i use the rod spike thing u used to pierce can with as the handle for twisting oil filter off??? thank you i am doing my 2 nd oil change ever so yea anyway very helpful video thanks again:)
Simple pair of channel locks works very well.
What kind of 1911 you workin with? JMB is my idol and hero
Just an ol' no frills Rock Island.
I've had it for 14 years, put many thousands of rounds through it, never had a single hiccup.
all that's easy to do on a workbench but when you're under a vehicle you don't have a lot of space nor leverage I had a Lincoln Town car where you had to turn the wheels to get the filter off
All the tranditional oil filters are easily accessible , have you tried to change it on the Chevy Orlando ??????
That's why you tighten oil filters by hand. Sometimes they still are hard to remove. I had to use a large pair of pliers to remove my oil filter thankfully I had room to get them in there.
kyle stivers
That's right, there supposed to be a little tight.
i loved it. Saved me & was of greatest help. Thanx a lot. ❤ U.
Which method did you use?
After 30 mins of frustration and failure, I kept using my hands and it finally worked just be patient
After 30 minutes of frustration and two murders be patient....😵🔨💀💀
What engines have room for a pipe wrench or the screw driver?. Plus a lot of diesel filters require enough tightening to need a wrench for 3/4 of a turn, and 10,000 miles later they're tighter
Ima try the last one I'm sure I'll have plenty of room to make enough force to put a long ass screwdriver in with a hammer
You would be surprised how often I’ve had to do this on multiple vehicles and have made it work , usually doesn’t take as much force as he used in this video and you only need a screwdriver that is long enough to reach through both sides of the filter. Also using a weighted hammer helps . But yes it is still usually a hassle and you have to be extremely careful for what’s around the filter .
What's with all the dislikes for this video? Some of you are turds. This video was very useful. Thank you for the options.
Come back to the real world !
Best way was the old skool way screwdriver and hammer works everytime.
In the last resort, drilling a hole with a drill is a better option than hammering on oil filter which could damage the oil filter mounting or its threads.
Yeah that's it get all the swarf in the sump 🙄
@@adamleddington368 Oil filter is normally removed when the engine is off. The swarf will settle down at the bottom of the filter which is finally thrown away. There is no way swarf gets dumped in the sump 😁😁
Ajazz Maqbool plus it has anti drain back valve, the content inside the filter won’t come out.
some Oil filters are located too far in be
tween components my brother
Abram G. Maruapula
As we used to say in the Seabees. They had one engineer hold the filter, then they built the car around it.
If you have to use the last method, poke a hole in the bottom of the filter to let any potentially hot oil drain first. Then go to the side.
if you plan on using #5 screwdriver method, you're better off drilling a hole through the can first and then inserting the screwdriver through it
for the last method, have you ever heard about a tool called a drill?
The 3-jaw type worked for me, when all others failed. It was on my jet ski, and space was limited, so the screwdriver trick wasn't an option. Of course the jaws weren't small enough, so I had to weld on tabs, which did the trick.
They sell universal ones that have 3 claw type grippers and you use a socket wrench. As you loosen it the claws grip the filter.. I paid lile $10 for it.. Basically looks lile the 2nd one.
Boy who would have guessed that using oil filter wrench’s is his 5 easy ways lol thought this was gonna be a helpful video not just a video on how to use different filter wrench’s
Thanks man. Pipe wrench works for me
You should of made this video while the filter was in the truck or car
I just use an old serpentine belt...just make a choke loop in the appropriate direction on the filter, cinch it up tight then continue to wrap the remaining loop in the same direction until al slack is rolled up the pit screwdriver in loops end and pry or just jerk it til loose then continue to pull while it unrolls....or make a loop of old bycicle chain then stick a Phillips head through both ends and pry
I have dozen ways to remove stubborn oil filters in tight spaces.. Your lucky your filter was on your table, does your table needs lubricants?
When the filter doesn't want to loosen, listen to your heart.
