Lisle Oil filter wrench review. It saved me from a lot of work!

  • After wrestling with an oil filter for a couple hours, I resorted to going through the Summit Racing catalog for a solution. I brought home 2 tools but only needed 1. Lisle to the rescue. I don't know why it's an import car filter, it worked perfectly on a Pontiac. My most difficult oil filter removal ever. Have a story to share? Put it in the comments below. Final words? Hand tighten!

    Glad I watched this video! I tried all different kinds of tools, even the screwdriver through the filter method, but that didn't work. Was thinking I was going to have to pay to have the vehicle towed since I tore up the filter with the screwdriver. This gripped onto the distorted filter and using a breaker bar, was able to finally break the filter free. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

    Changing oil in 1966 corvette with a spin on oil filter. Could not find the oil filter wrench. Got an old telephone cord and a small block of wood
    wrapped the cord around the filter and around the block of wood. Used the wood for leverage trying to spin the filter off. Could not, then jacked to car up higher so I could use both hands. Put my other hand on the filter to help turn. Then used the wood and telephone cord to spin the oil filter. Finally it move a bit. More pressure from the cord and hand finally started spinning the filter. You do what you have to do to make things
    work. Going to make my own oil filter tool for this car.
    Thanks for your video store. I have been there and done that was well.

    Them are great I got mine at walmart it has never failed me. You'd think it would slip but somehow it always catches. People over tighten oil filters all the time they only need to be hand tight. Not hand tight as in big burly man giving it everything you got with both hands. Just use one hand and give about 70-80% of the beans you can manage. You can always tighten it later if it leaks. And take it easy on the drain plug just a light snug with your average 3/8" ratchet is enough

    • @GroundhogzGarage
      @GroundhogzGarage  3 года назад +1

      Agreed. If you oil the gasket, snugging it up by hand will allow the gasket to compress enough to not leak.

    I have one of those tools for removing oil filters, the one I have is a little different than that one, the one I have has three fingers on it that come together and clamp down on the filter. I have a bunch of other filter wrenches that I have gathered up over the years. but that one with the three fingers has been a lifesaver. before that I would always as a last resort, grab a long screw driver and it would do the job. but most oil filters hold about a quart of oil, and it would make a giant mess. and the special tool will get into tight spots better and will fit any oil filter. so it's the first tool I grab out the toolbox.
    something else I have learned over the years, is now I use WIX filters exclusively. the can part of the filter is thicker and sturdier and they filter the oil better.

    • @GroundhogzGarage
      @GroundhogzGarage  2 года назад +1

      I have since seen those oil filter tools and the concept is the same so I can see where they would be as effective. I have watched some channels where they dissect filters and I believe I have heard that some filters have thicker metal for cans. Honestly in my case, the can metal was decently think or it would have ripped off much earlier. But I have heard Wix filters are very good.

    Great video and presentation. Pretty much the steps I am going through on my Boat's 6.0 Chevy. I am surprised that no one seems to have tried to get some WD40 into the treads or around the gasket. Is this an impossibility? I am considering how this might be done. Any thoughts?

    Use/attach "Exhaust Clamp U-bolt" to the body of filter. Make sure it has enough thread bar length so that we can attach wrench hole (any wrench you prefer) to the thread part, and push/pull the thread bar using wrench to open the oil filter. Here one 4-inch Exhaust Clamp U-bolt costs USD $ 1. Sorry for bad English.

    I almost bought that Lisle remover for one of my vehicles just because the filter was an odd size and really hard to reach. The fact that it would work on pretty much any size filter was what made me consider it. I ended up finding the right size tool at the local O'Reilly's. Good to know that the Lisle will work to remove really tight filters as well!
    Why do you think that the filter was on there so tight? I always tighten 3/4 turn from when the gasket touches the engine. It wouldn't surprise me though if one of those oil change places just cranked it on until they couldn't turn it any further...

    • @GroundhogzGarage

    took me about 1.5 hours and trashing an oil filter to get mine off...tried hand, then screwdriver but couldnt get any leverage, tried multiple angles no joy...eventually tried tapping it unscrewed with the tip of a screwdriver , but that just shreaded the filter even more ...lastly got a thin bar with a round tip and tapped it for ages ...like i did with the screwdriver,but because it was a 10mm bar it didnt shred the filter as much and eventually the filter started to move ...i couldnt believe it ..my eyes nearly popped out of my head when i saw it move , it was a major relief.and eventually knocked it enough that i could get it off with my hands.

    With all due respect, experienced mechanics do not crank on the spin-on oil filters when installing them. I know guys who hand tighten them with no additional tool use. I know that removing them can still be more difficult than installing them, but it shouldn’t take much effort to break it loose when it comes time to change the filter.

    Another cool thing about this tool is that it will not work to tighten, only loosen. It seems that stubborn filters also come off more easily on a cold engine. Also, there is a tool used by aircraft mechanics where you cut off the can and attached a three pronged tool directly to the thick metal plate with threads at filter base.

    I've seen experienced mechanics hammer a screwdriver through the used oil filter to remove it

      You don't have to be an experienced mechanic to have success removing an oil filter with a screwdriver punched through an oil filter. But when the screwdriver is tearing through the metal, sometimes drastic measures are called for.

      I've heard nothing but good reviews on the Lisle 63600. Thinking of getting one and/or an EWK similar design, but with the teeth on each end

      It's possible that someone way over did it. It's also possible that it has been on the engine for who knows how long. The car had been sitting a long tim.

      I thought I mentioned that I went through all the options at Summit Racing. But it’s a Lisle product so it’s probably available at multiple locations.

      It's the Lisle 63250 - you can Google it and find it all over the place (amazon, walmart, local parts stores etc). I have the smaller one which is the Lisle 63600.

      To your point, I sometimes take my cars in to get the oil changed for convenience. A couple days ago I changed the oil on my Escalade and couldn’t get the oil plug out with my wrench. Soooo……I put the socket on my 3/8” Milwaukee impact and it still wouldn’t come out. Now I’m thinking, I’m hoping the threads aren’t ruined. One breaker bar later, I finally got it loose. WTAF….lol

      @@GroundhogzGarage I got so mad when I have to follow behind a "professional" who does horrible work. It's really annoying
      I remember paying $1,500 for routine maintenance and spending almost a week trying to put Everything back together correctly since they flip the tires, use the wrong bolts,... Just a lot of small stuff that was missed. It always made me wonder if they actually did what I needed them to do

    Too tight with oil filters is NOT GOOD! Oil filters should only be installed hand tighten only! Tools should only ever be used on oil filters for removal only, and only when necessary.

      It seems like no matter how often that message is shared someone is always putting too many torques on tightening the filter.

    • @musicauthority7828

      That is not the only reason filters get stuck on the engine. it's also because the engine block gets pretty hot and cooks the gasket too the mating surface. I know because I have had filters that I have put on be a problem. and I always put oil on the gasket and I never over tighten them.

      If you should hand tighten only and never resort to using a tool, does that mean it’s unnecessary to ensure that the filter doesn’t leak after installation?
      Of course not. So, yeah, a tool might be required.
