  • Scrappy quilts can be planned or not. In this video, Corey shares some suggestions on making a planned scrappy quilt. From ideas for how to look at fabrics, to setting up guidelines for your scrappy quilt, Corey covers a number of different ways to think about your next scrap quilt project.
Corey's shirt was purchased here: www.primitiveg...
Scrappy Irish Chain Pattern: drive.google.c... NOTE: THERE ARE CUTTING UPDATES NEEDED TO THIS PATTERN AS FOLLOWS:
Under cutting instructions, you need (24) 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles not (24) 6.5" x 6.5" rectangles. The (10) strips 2.5" x WOF are your binding strips. Under block assembly in the first step, you need 12 pink squares (instead of 4) and 4 white squares (instead of 12). In step 2, you will only need (65) 2.5" scrap squares (not 66). Also note that you will need 3 yards of background fabric.

I started quilting by making scrappy quilts. I had no choice, I was a stay at home mom with 4 kids and I used to sew a lot of our clothes, so scraps were bountiful. I thought nothing of it, it's what I thought all quilts were from what grew up with. Years later I was shocked to hear fellow quilters talk about not knowing how to make a scrap quilt. I thought everyone started out sewing clothes and such and worked their way into quilting!😆

Thank you. I find often these are still my favorite quilts to make because of the variety of fabrics and remembering the projects they went into. I've always been a use-it-up person in all areas of my life. I guess color and value were always something I naturally understood, so that helped

Those quilts must be so special with all the memories attached. I wish I had done that. I sewed for my six children, all in their 30's and 40's now, but only started quilting about 7 years ago. I feel like I have a good eye for color and choosing fabrics, but I am a little intimidated by scrappy, afraid my scrappy quilt might not be pleasing to the eye like others I have made. This will be a good project for me to step out of my comfort zone! I am really looking forward to it.

I mostly do scrappy, that is my favorite, I have seen very few “ugly” quilts! The ones I would consider ugly were more about construction, not color combinations. Please, let me assure you! The quilts used in this video are quilt show blue ribbon, and just beautiful. I want them all as my own❤ ok, here it comes, they do not look Scrappy to me. So well coordinated, perfect color tones and fabric scale. Her scraps don’t look like my scraps😂just go for it when sewing your scraps together. I will admit, there are pieces that “clash”, that’s my only rule, no clashing. Oh, ok..no matchy, matchy either. Just have fun sewing. (KH)

Thoroughly enjoyed this presentation Corey. I really love your fabric lines and patterns, one of which is plugged into my 2023 schedule. I began making quilts at least 40 years ago being inspired my grandmother. To this day, my favorite quilts to make are Scrap Quilts. For me, it was like a journey! The best way I can explain is this: a youngster exploring art. I can ‘see’ the child progressing from a primitive heart, sun and stick figure parents…. To a picture a tab bit more recognizable, to quite a nice drawing. Things like line, color, value become developed. The drawings become more personalized for the budding artist. The technique and color choices mature.
Along my journey, a giant Aha moment for me was when I started to ask myself as I was at each point of the project, “does this make me happy? When I stopped thinking, “Does this go together?”, and changed my internal dialog to “Does this make me happy” everything came together!
I found it utterly amazing that we all have so much creativity inside each of us. I just needed to discover how to use it. Hopefully this may help others along their quilting adventures. Blessings to all and may your quilting fill you with joy and happiness as we quilt our way through 2023.
Hugs from Maine to all. Ps, as soon as I finish washing the kitchen floor, I’m heading to the sewing room for more machine quilting (domestic) on my favorite scrap quilt!

    • @CorianderQuilts
      @CorianderQuilts  Год назад +1

I think you are spot on in asking ourselves "does this make me happy?" I really think we should approach quilt making in a way that brings us joy, using the tools we like, in the way we like, to make quilts we like! Making quilts should bring and spread joy. =)

If your heart is not "organized" scrap, here's what I do. Use crayons to color the design. Pull color from a connecting print. A blue and red floral? Red. Light green with a pinstriped gray, gray plus signs. A purple center? Blue peacock feather with a purple center dot. The pattern drives the color match. I have dark sets with scrappy neutrals, and then a lighter grouping. It's really all about the overall picture you want to make. Think puzzles. They aren't in tones, they are in overall presentation.

I love the little grey "hollow squares" setting on your MBH3 quilt! Gonna have to use your hollow squares alternate block setting on something now!! Thanks!
I'm also laughing a little at seeing Brigette's block which was then pulled due to "copyright infringement" - I'm laughing because that specific block is what drew me to BH3 and then there was that whole controversy but as a fellow designer, you got your block patterns early and did the block before the controversy set in. I cannot imagine any designer NOT wanting to be linked in to the massive MBH QAL community but Brigitte handled it like a pro.
Your curved seams interpretation of that rounded "walking in circles" block is a super nice scrappy one.

My grandmother in the 60s and 70s made several scrap quilts for our family and she used the leftover fabrics from shirts my Mom made for herself and us kids. My Mom still has the quilts, they were well-used and appreciated during cold Nebraska winters. It’s fun to look at the fabrics and recognize the prints from clothes I used to have. I also remember one quilt had a lot of double-knit polyester in it, it was warm! She used whatever she had, and made it look good. I’ve made a couple scrap quilts where everything goes color-wise, and a few with a controlled color palate. Scrap quilts are just the best!

I live in a small town without easy access to fabric and my mind is completely blown by the suggestion to buy mini charms as a way to view color in person 🤯 But also as a newer quilter without a huge scrap pile yet, I love the look of this quilt and was trying to math different ways to do it, but then shopping across lines online...horror...never would have occurred to me to stick with one designer as a way to make sure it blends. So thank you all around! I'm planning to buy some charm packs from same/similar designers and have at it. In my head I wanted that scrap basket/bin to pull from to make a yummy scrap quilt but in the beginning I was a project quilter (only bought for specific project). Well most were gifts and weren’t always what I would buy for myself so they didn’t mix well. Just finished my daughter's wedding quilt, Arkansas Crossroads, but I called it "I Spy Kisses" where I just went to town on everything. I mixed things that they liked, bought some little people fabrics with red headed cowboys for her husband and Tula little girls with animals. There were pirates, soccer, birds, luminous constellations (hah!) and I enjoyed putting it together so much because all the different fabrics made me smile. I never started scrappy, I did a mystery quilt thing where I not only learnt about shapes, but I changed one of the colours just to be different. Next mystery I changed more, the last one I changed everything and I have enjoyed each one. Previous quilt was an idea from a lady, sadly passed away and I've forgotten her name, where it was a floral scrappy trips around the world - a Bonnie Hunter pattern. Not only did I make a dent in my florals, but it turned out gorgeous. I'm definitely a scrappy person now. Love your scrappy quilts too, especially your last one with the stars. Good Morning...woke up your new post so Happy Day! During the C slow down I cut all of my scraps into 2-1/2 inch squares so I was itching to start and got ants in pants over new years and started piecing so I’m ready to set the blocks today. I used a background I had been saving for years bc it was so unique and I just didn’t know what to do with it. Then I had a blue chunk that is a cool blue, possibly left over from a kit I bought on sale just for the fabric, and I never really liked it, but used that in place of the pink...it finally found a happy home and is pleasant with all my warm happy scraps...there you go a very cherished fabric and one that I thought would probably end up in the Linus box playing well and loving it❤. Thank you for your inspiration and tips,I will put this post in my watch later bin for sure. Of note, this is a REALLY big quilt...want to make again using 2 inchers.

I didn't get out to the studio today (best intentions!) to cut more squares so I decided to watch some quilting videos--and discovered you doing "Scrappy Irish Chain"! I was blown away at the synchronicity. So there's going to be a series of putting this quilt together, right? I certainly hope so because it would be fun to do a kind of "sew-along." I've often seen that fabrics I would not put together or different textures, it always looks lovely in the finished quilt, to me anyways. Thank you Corrie for this video, it was super helpful! As a newer quilter I do not have a ton or scraps. However, I had approximately 3 shoe boxes jammed packed with 2-1/2” squares. So last week I eliminated all the seasonable fabrics from my pull. Then I looked at color palette. I stayed within the same fabric tone for each of the colors I chose. Therefore, for my quilt, I eliminated all pastels, all scraps with a mostly white background, mixed designers, etc. I so much prefer to use a designer’s grouping so this quilt will be totally out of the norm for me but I think it will turn out okay. And if I don’t like the top once it is finished it can always be donated to a shelter. Also, thank you for listing the pattern edits as I will be sewing this quilt in our winter home and not have access to additional scraps from my boxes. I’ve never made a scrappy quilt. I think that this video has inspired me to try something different in the New Year! Thank you for sharing your beautiful scrappy quilts. And get those bindings done!! 😂

Thank you for the great video. The fabrics you picked for Happy Scrappy Baskets are my colors, as are the ones on the shelf behind you. They make me smile.

You can tell what colors I like when you see the fabrics I design on my shelves behind me!...I love those warm, happy colors. =)
