  • Sam Wilde is a new designer for Free Spirit fabrics and I was fortunate to receive his new collection - Florescence to work with. I have wanted to make an optical illusion quilt for ages and this seemed like the perfect opportunity! Don't you just love how it came together? as promised, I will list the sizes at the end of this description.
It really is the support from my lovely Patrons that allows me to keep this show on the road and I am very grateful to each one of you!
You can join them there for the price of a coffee or a craft magazine and watch the content back to the start of 2019! Look in the feature 'Collections' to find what you are looking for!
    / thelasthomelyhouse
Over on my website you will find much more! Here you can shop for some of the things I use in my craft room at The Last Homely House and sign up for the monthly newsletter.
    thelasthomelyh...
My daughter Martha and her partner Adam have recently made a beautiful new set of cards for my shop, inspired by all the garden birds that come to visit me in The Last Homely Garden - if you fancy a set - thelasthomelyh...
The music in this video was chosen from Epidemic Sound and is called Seventh Garden and Remove the Complexities.
If you enjoy watching me make quilts - check out this playlist • Fabric, sewing, patchw...
There is always so much going on here and there is more behind the scenes over on Instagram - kateatthelasthomelyhouse.
Thank you so much for watching!
    Love
    Kate
    xxx
    The measurements I used
    the 'feature' squares are 5"
the 'shadow' fabric is 1.5" wide and 5.5" long - this will need trimming a little when you sew each one to the square,
The little offset pieces are 1" x 1.5"
make sure you get the shadow layout opposite each other.
The sashing I used was 2" wide.
Have a play with the layout and alter the sizes to suit yourself
    Enjoy
    xxx

Kate i want to thank you for being such a kind person. My son killed himself 2 years ago. I have been with you for years. And when my heart is breaking i sit down and watch you. With tears rolling down my face your wonderful personality always helps me get out of my heartbreak and into my hands. I have made more quilts with you in the last 2 years than ever. I give them all away. Thank you again for giving me a place on your lime green sofa.

Kate what a beautiful quilt! You certainly did justice to that gifted fabric. Your Pinterest quilt board looks very similar to mine. Thank you for the reminder and the inspiration to get back to the illusion quilt I started years ago. Thanks again for all that you do. I just love all of your videos quilting or otherwise.

My husband was my maths genius, I’d go running to him, show him what I had and what I wanted to end up with, and he would figure it out. He was also good at drawing my project out for me. I lost my dear husband 3 years ago after 48 years together. I still ask him for help, and eventually we figure it out . Your quilt is amazing, thank you.

❤ hello Ms Kate ! My mother who’s turning 88 tomorrow, came across your channel about a month ago and she’s been watching you daily for hours. You have encouraged her to want to make another quilt, she hasn’t made one in years. She calls me to her room all through the day to show me what you’re doing and what supplies and fabrics you’re using ❤. Thanks for sharing your life! You’ve uplifted my mom; she’s been a little sad because she can’t move around like she’d like but she’s inspired now and I’m looking for supplies, tables, and fabrics for her. Lol 😊 please continue your work. My moms name is Lula. She’s still understanding how to like your videos; I try to catch her on some of them. We thank you again for sharing your expertise and beautiful work. ❤ Have a wonderful day 🎉

My daughter noticed I was raising my shoulders to sew because my chair was too low. I raised my chair so my elbows were at a right angle to my sewing table , and now I can sew for hours without pain. I noticed your elbows are low when you sew.

I'm definitely on team "strip piece and cross cut" for the black & gray pieces. For one reason, when you cut skinny pieces WOF, the WOF direction is more stretchy than the other (warp? weft?) along the selvage direction. Cutting wide and then cross cutting as you do, means less stretching & distorting when you're chain piecing. But, I'm sure you know all that! Stunning quilt, really good use of your fabrics.

I couldn’t see exactly how the quilt would look until you pinned it onto your board….then all of a sudden the squares just popped out of the fabric and looked 3D…amazing work Kate ❤

I love watching you show different quilts and how you do them. I find myself very much more open to quilt designs that I wouldn't dream of doing.. Thank you ❣️ for sharing.

I do love the look of that illusion quilt. Your 2” sashing is just the right proportion to let those fabrics shine. I have several charm packs of fabric lines I really like, which I can use to make it even easier. All I have to do is cut out those strip sets. Your Sam Wilde fabrics are all lovely. Thanks for making this video.
