Making a Colourful Summer Bear Paw QUILT! Tiny Pieces!

  • I made my own Bear Paw quilt after the visit from Chris English where he showed me his spectacular entry for The Festival of Quilts, but I chose to make mine really small and they were a bit too fiddly to be honest, so I stopped when I got to 25 blocks. In this video I'll show you how I sashed these blocks and made a small quilt that might be a picnic blanket if ever we get picnic weather!
Some of these fabrics are Heather Ross and some are Free Spirit, the solid green is Sour Apple from Kona. I love how colourful it looks! I won't be working with pieces that tiny for a long time though!
It really is the support from my lovely Patrons that allows me to keep this show on the road and I am very grateful to each one of you!

I read in a really old quilting book, that when you don't know what color setting or sashing to use -- use pink. I've followed that advice several times and I've been very pleased.😊 I need to add lime green to that quote.

Hi Kate! About 4 years ago as a newbie to RUclips, I was searching "quilting" and discovered your channel. I was immediately and completely hooked! I binge watched for days. I absolutely love watching you and your quilting projects💕 This quilt is beautiful and the backing is just perfect! I fondly remember sweet Norma (and your other kitties) and was so happy to see Cat Rita lovingly at home on the new quilt🥰 Thank you for your love of color and quilting and for sharing with us!

I was looking for 'hexies' 2 1/2 years ago when I found Kate's channel. She was working on Agnes's quilt, and I thought, Oh, how striking! with them sewn in individually, instead of the typical flower motif. I'm doing mine in diamonds, but the outer edge may be a mix.

Love it! I am 65 and have been a sewer for most of my life. I started making Barbie doll cloths when I was about 9 or 10, at home with my mom, she says she was so surprised I could sew Barbie clothes, lol. Have sewn my own cloths since my teens, made my wedding dress and a couple of my brides maids dresses. Then I starting sewing for people and making a bit of money. Then had kids and sewed more, lol. Then grand kids! I have slowed down a bit now but after watching Kate I am thinking that if I start now maybe I could make a quilt for each of our 3 kids to have when I am gone. Or each of the 3 grands. Anyways, thank you for the inspiration. Keeping my finger crossed, lol.

A neat and quick way to use up your scraps of biggish pieces of batting and make a frankenbatting is to lay them overlapping by about two inches and then with your rotary cutter cut a slightly wavy line along the two inch overlap. Then you remove carefully without disturbing too much the very edges that are now cut off, and just by magic, the two wadding pieces interlock slightly and have absolutely no gaps or overlaps. You then stitch the two pieces together, either by hand or with a wide zigzag stitch on your machine, hope it makes sense ❤

I'm sitting here in my sewing room sewing while I listen and peek in at your progress on the bear claw quilt. It's almost like we're having a little sewing bee together. I can't do anything that fancy, but I am making a stack of quilts for some kids here in Mexico who live in a mission. I could buy warm blankets more cheaply, but they've had a rough time of it and don't really own anything. So I figured some colorful quilts might brighten their nights a little bit. Besides, houses here aren't insulated or heated. When it's 47° F/ 9 C outside that's the same temperature it is inside, give or take a degree or two. So you can't have too many blankets in winter. Thanks for letting me hang out on the lime green couch while I work.

I wasn't sure about that green at first, but it turned out beautifully! Loving the Kaffe Fassett on the back (their prints are soooooo pretty!!). That cutting wheel is very cool! I keep my bunting somewhat intact while ironing (I cut it into more manageable sections and iron those in one go, peeling them apart as I run the iron over them, then snip the pieces apart after they're nice and flat).
Also, that design board is amazing! Y need to Google it and see what sizes the panels come in!!

LOVE the idea of making a large 'impression' of the front of the quilt on the back! That apple green is a fun colour, isn't it? I bet it will look lovely outside as a picnic blanket too! I also love your sizing method - "It measures....this big" 🤣 Isn't smooshing the best? There's something almost 'spiritual' about connecting with every part of the quilt you've lovingly put together. ❤ Loved seeing so much Cat-Rita in this video - and her stretched out on your quilt was just gorgeous…. Thank you as always Kate - a treat for us! x

Kate. Watching from St. Louis, Missouri in the states. I found your channel a few months ago and can’t tell you how much I enjoy your channel. You are always an up beat woman and in this day and time we need that. Continued success with your channel I also watch your garden channel also. You seem to soothe the troubles we all seem to have.

Always enjoy watching you quilt, Kate, and happy to see that you don't seem to mind the odd point being nipped off in the stitching. Have been a quilter since the early 80s (a beginner to some) but it always caused me considerable soul searching and heaven only knows how may seam pickers unseaming the pinched points. No matter the quality of fabric, it will always have its own agenda when it's stitched together what with stretching, pressing, cutting. If it's for exhibition I can understand this but if it's a utility quilt - then keeping someone warm is the key. Thank you again. This quilt is looking beautiful. Lovely seeing John and Cat Rita 🙂

Cooled off enough to quilt again! I turned my ice crystal hexi quilt into a smaller table topper, It is a star and pretty draped over a floor length tablecloth. I am more serious about my next project and decided on a twisted hexi quilt.I am quite enchanted with English paper piecing. Slooowww

I was just thinking the same as Mrsstick07! It is so nice to come to a place where you know you are very welcome, and the company is wonderful and so kind. The music just finishes the whole mood. This quilt is another of your beautiful works of art Kate! I love that it is a two-sided design!

Dear Kate, your bear paw blocks are stunning color combos! I love them! Funnily, I’m making a shoo-fly blocks of abt 7.5 inch size too and am now fiddling on design to decide on size finish, so your project is quite timely for me, haha! Love you, kiddo!

Thank you for sharing your bear paw journey quilt, it’s beautiful and I love the green matches so well.
I have used basting spray very good but I found the quilters tape so easy to match all the left overs. 😊

Kate, your quilt brings me so much joy to see! Thanks for sharing it with us. May I suggest you try the frankenbatting method of joining leftover pieces of batting? It’s named after Frankenstein’s big stitches that he is sewn together with. It’s very simple and fast and eliminates any bunching. It easily quilts whether by hand or machine.
The pool noodle basting method has also made basting so much easier for me. It keeps all the pieces smooth as you baste. There are lots of videos on both methods.

Old fashioned hair lacquer makes an excellent temporary basting spray!! Also it’s much much cheaper than 505. I rarely pin baste now - pool noodles and hair spray. Works for me 😊
