      Thank you so much! I'm so glad I re-discovered that little log cabin. I've been working on micro blocks ever since! I just made a little "flying geese" circle that's is as tiny as one can be made. I'll show it to everybody on the next video. I finally figured out how to draft the circle and I just couldn't believe how it looked when I sewed (is that a word?} it together. Thank you so much for your compliment.

    I have made large quilts for almost 50 years, and don’t want to stop making quilts because I have too many. My husband keeps saying, “Don’t we have enough quilts already?” This will give me another avenue to continue making quilts without taking up so much space. So, I can get my quilting “fix” doing tiny quilts. Yay!

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  Месяц назад +2

      YES! Exactly! The last "big" quilt that I made was a mosaic quilt with over 12,000 1/2" squares of fabric. I hand quilted it too. It too SEVEN years!!! By the time I finished it, I just hated it. I had plenty of utilitarian quilts that I'd made for all of our beds so I gave myself "permission" just to make tiny quilts in the colors I was dreaming about. I hope you'll share what you make!

I love repetitive motion...it's true, but I love to make people laugh even more so when she said that I said "Yea..but just my luck, the first person in line would want succotash". LOL! I am trying to learn mosaics and I have collected plates and salt and pepper shakers and teapots for 20 years preparing for the day when I can retire. When I moved into the new studio, I had the room to unpack all the boxes, I realized just how much of a hoarder I'd become! It's embarassing!! I have over 100 teapots alone, I've been thinking about doing beginner mosaic classes so I can share all of this. I just didn't realize how much I'd collected until I could unpack it all. Ugh. I change out the little teapots on my table all the time. I have so many cute ones!

    I reckon I'm your age, and English. I know that technique as Foundation Piecing. It became popular in the 18th and 19th century in England. Paper Piecing or English Paper Piecing (EPP) is covering a paper template with fabric sewing the fabric together by hand. It originated in England in 1700. I love what you made!

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you so much. It's called Foundation Paper Piecing here too. I learned how to make simple log cabin blocks when I was young and then began to draw out little blocks that were sort of "crazy quilt" patterns for years before I saw the first FPP book. I always referred to it as "paper piecing" and I still seem to say that. I'll have to before to add in "foundation". I LOVE EPP and all those beautifully complex designs. I haven't ever tried it but it's on my list.

One day I realized that I had over 100 little hearts and I put that little top together. I'll put together a pattern for the little heart. I have had requests for individual blocks and we have begun to put some patterns together for some of the more interesting little blocks that could make a whole quilt all by themselves. I love miniature quilts. All the challenges and enjoyment of a regular sized quilt without taking out a second mortgage on the house to pay for the fabric.😉 Paper foundation is perfect for them. The difficulty I have is attempting to shrink the size of binding to be in proportion with the tiny block size.

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  2 месяца назад +2

      Hahahaha!! That's so true! After over 40 years of quilting, I have an embarrassing huge collection of fabric and I'm not putting much of a dent in it with miniatures. On top of that, I seem to be incredibly frugal about what I throw away. If a scrap is at least one inch square, I don't throw it away. Maybe I should make a little video of my storage system....hmmmm? I found a tall, clear acrylic cube at an auction a few years ago and I even keep the little bits of scrap from the blocks after I trim them to size at the end. All the scraps go into that tall cube and crazy as it sounds, I find SO much inspiration from that cube. The colors just fall together and somehow illustrate new colorways for me. I'll put the cube into my next video so you can see it. As for the binding, I simply cut strips for each side of the quilt and sew them on. The sides first and then the top and bottom. In the early days, I tried to make binding the way I'd made it for big quilts (double layer) and had a terrible time trying to miter the corners on the tiny quilts. I pretty quickly realized that a double layer isn't necessary. These little quilts aren't going to be washed and used and pulled like a bed quilt. A single layer works just fine and not having to turn the corner makes it so easy. I just cut a strip, sew it on the front, turn it to the back...turn the seam allowance in and hand sew the back. I'll have to show it on video. I don't think I'm making any sense.. Hahahaha

We'll have to draft all of them into real patterns (not just my little hand-drawn originals) and write out the directions for sizing them and sewing them on...so that one will take a while longer. Elmer’s school glue is the BEST to use to hold small pieces like you have there. A small amount across the length of your seam and then press to dry. They will pop open without popping stitches so you can press seams open if you need to. Just thought I would share. I do this and it’s AWESOME! Washes out as well if you need it to.

      I'm going to try that today! Someone suggested using the wheel a couple of days ago and I just couldn't believe I'd never thought of it! I had to search for my wheel. I KNEW I had one somewhere and I finally found it. I think it's probably what I used to mark the darts on my high school home ec class...over 50 years ago! Great idea!

I actually made my living making lace for a couple of years in my life. It's a crazy story! I'll have to tell it on camera. Do you make bobbin lace? I'd love to hear more. I love the color too. What if you perforated the outside of the paper before you stitched your fabric down and thus making your block? You could also staple 4 paper patterns together and perforate them all at once.

I have trouble following written instructions. Thank you so much. I'll watch!

    I am new to quilting and happened upon this video somehow. I love these mini quilts and I think I’d like to try this. But I have a question, do those paper patterns stay on the quilt? If you use this technique for a larger quilt, what happens to the paper when you need to wash it?

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  Месяц назад

      There are two answers to that. I leave the paper in because my little quilts are only 6 to 8 inches square and they're hung on the wall. All they need is occasional dusting or a lint roller. The paper just stays in because they're not going to be used like normal quilts. For any quilt that's going to be used normally, you'll want to take off the paper. The needle perforates the paper as the sewing goes on and it's usually fairly easy to pull out, although it can be tedious. I leave that job for road trips. When I'm not driving, I pull out the paper pieces and put them in a little trash can that I keep handy. If you have a stubborn piece of paper that doesn't want to come out, just pull on the little block (gently) from opposite corners and it will usually dislodge. If all else fails, a blunt-tipped pair of tweezers will help greatly. I don't worry about tiny little pieces that don't want to come out easily. They seem to dissolve in the wash and have never been a problem with bigger (normal) quilts that I've made. Hope that helps! -Carol

    Question It is useful to use washable fleece instead of paper. You can print the pattern on it with a copy machine. In the Netherlands we call that Solufix.

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  Месяц назад

      I'm not sure what washable fleece is. Maybe it's like the interfacing/lining that dissolves in water? I'm sure that would work, but I'm not sure how you'd transfer the block on there. With paper piecing, you can print as many copies of a pattern as you want on your printer, but I don't know if you could get that material through a printer. You can also print out a "master" of a page of the blocks and print them in reverse on some kind of cotton material (maybe wash it first to avoid shrinkage) and then print the blocks on that material and sew on that rather than on paper. You have to use a copier with toner rather than regular ink cartridges. Here you have that done at any copy center. I hope that answers your question!

    Giucy Giuce designs miniature paper piecing patterns and he cuts off the seam allowance on the pattern before he starts sewing. You just need to remember to cut your fabric big enough to include the seam allowance.

    • @cottonfrolic
      @cottonfrolic  Месяц назад

      I've tried that, but I do much better leaving it on and then I can cut the block out at the end without any problems. When I cut it off, I realized at the end that I had to measure out the quarter inch with a ruler to finish cutting out the quilt. Hahahaha. Does that make sense?
