    My Granddaughter is purchasing her First home at 23! I am so excited for her and proud of her. She has been working since age 16 and saving every penny while living at home with her parents. She has ask me to make her curtins for her and I haven't told her that I am going to make her a quilt for her bed. I need to wait until she moves into the house so I can see what she has planned as far as colors. I am also going to take her shopping to buy what she needs for her kitchen. She is my first grandchild and we are very close. I am so happy I am giddy! I keep thinking of all the things I can make for her. Pillows for her couch, placemats for her table, a table runner for her living room coffee table and changing them for the season! Yeppie!!!

    THANK YOU so much for showing my quilt at the beginning. To answer your question, yes, a Stag & Doe 4:21 (Buck & Doe or Jack & Jill.... what it is called depends on where you live) is a fundraising party for the wedding. There is a cost to get in (usually $15) There are usually games, sometime gambling games sometimes other types like corn hole, plinko, etc that people pay to play. We had a penny sale with over 60 prizes. A Twoonie (Canadian $2 coin) toss for a Kate Spade purse and one for a cooler and beer. The quilt raffle. And a 50/50 draw. All told it was a great night raising around $5000 for my son and daughter-in-law. Now to finish off the quilt I made for my daughter-in-law's bridal shower (only a few weeks after the wedding now 😮). I may send pictures of it as it is one of Sherri's patterns as well.

    I agree with Sue I rarely buy patterns that do not include the block size on the outside of the pattern.
    Also I prefer patterns that have instructions (inside) to make one block because I donot cut out all of my fabric at once. I got burned 22 years ago when I was a new quilter. I bought (what I thought was) a great pattern and cut out every piece of fabric for the quilt. When I started to put the blocks together, the last pieces didn’t fit the blocks so I thought I had mis-cut. I checked and double checked and measured and re-measured several times. All of those pieces were the size indicated in the pattern. I still doubted myself so I asked two friends, separately, to read the pattern and measure all my pieces. They determined as I had that there was a mistake in the pattern for those particular pieces.
    I called the pattern company to see if there had been an update to that pattern. I was told no there was nothing wrong with the pattern. She suggested I must’ve used different rulers from different manufactures to cut the different pieces. I replied that I only had one ruler. She then said it must’ve been my cutting mat, I don’t use my cutting mat to cut fabric. Then suggested I had used too much starch on those pieces, I told her I didn’t starch or use steam. I explained I had measured multiple times reading their instructions each time and then I had also asked two quilting friends to measure my pieces against the instructions. She still insisted that I was wrong and that there was nothing wrong with their pattern. I was really upset with her attitude and hung up. It took me days to unpick and then work out (I hate doing Quilty math) how to make the blocks smaller to fit the pieces since I had to use the fabric that I had. I have never purchased another pattern from that company since and t is the reason I will not cut out all of my fabric at one time. I cut out just enough fabric to make the number of blocks that I am able to sit and sew at that time.

    It was great to hear your take on copying patterns. I have long refused to accept a copied pattern from my quilting friends, or to copy a pattern for someone. It’s difficult to say “No” when asked for a copy, but I respect the time and effort put into making a pattern, and I believe it’s actually stealing from the designer. Quilters are just generous sharers by nature, but should learn where to draw the line.

    i agree with the questioner/comment of including the block size somewhere in your description. I always have to speculate from the dimensions of the finished quilt as to whether the borders are 4,5, or 6 inch to determine the block size. This is critical for those of us with disability and on limeted income. We don't want to purchase patterns we can't use and we are restricted by what cutting helps we have, either accuquilt or special rulers, but also understanding whether we have enough fabric to make it scrappy. I really do not purchase patterns that don't include the finished square size. It also helps if you are wondering if you can scale the pattern down to a wall hanging, table runner etc. or convert it to cutting sizes you have. I think you would get more pattern sales. Thank you for everything.

    • @Alioops-il7jn
      @Alioops-il7jn 3 месяца назад

      Multi-size. Patterns is one reason I purchase patterns. Patterns that go from crib to king are my favorite.

    • @frontofficed.burnell-power6288
      @frontofficed.burnell-power6288 3 месяца назад +2

      @@Alioops-il7jn I appreciate your reply, but it misses the concern I am trying to describe and what the writer was also trying to describe. Pattern covers that just tell us the fabric requirements of different size quilts or who promise that if we purchase the pattern they will offer us different dimensions inside, does not meet the needs of some of us with physical challenges...This information is not sufficient to determine whether the few accuquilt cutting tools I have available will be able to cut the pieces in the quilt, regardless of what size the quilt is. It is a LOT of math to try to make these conversions after the fact. And some times leads to errors so large it is not worth attempting to re-draft the entire pattern. A 9 inch block is very different from a 12 inch block. I am just trying to clarify for those who do not have this challenge, why this tiny bit of info is essential for some of us to know before we buy and it can sometimes (esp with borders)be difficult to guess at the block size. It is a small but important piece of information and I never buy patterns without it anymore.

    • @christinefunk3208
      @christinefunk3208 3 месяца назад

      I agree, I think block sizes would be so helpful (even if it's only approximate). Chelsi's two Magnolia patterns and the Hearts at Home I & II, for example. I can never remember which one has the larger block and which one has the smaller block. It's helpful information to know which version you want to order, especially on Etsy.

    • @blairseibert1778
      @blairseibert1778 3 месяца назад +1

      I have an Accuquilt and understood the question. I think if Sherri and Chelsi understood it fully they would say that giving away the block size/info is really giving away the pattern. People could more easily figure it out and wouldn't buy it as likely.

    Okay, if you decide to livestream at ANY time, please post a breadcrumb, because I will make a calendar event with alerts and mark off my time as an high priority appointment! 😄 That would be so awesome--particularly having thoroughly enjoyed the FQS episode!
    On the subject of quilt sizes, what I would love to see is more resizing options on the back page. Often, I'll add a block row when needed (I like square quilts for my queen sized bed), but it'd be lovely to have the adjusted yardage already worked out. I mean, I can manage it, but it's nice to get it at a glance.
    In all, thank you for yet another wonderful episode! It always makes my day--twice over when I can pop it up on Apple Podcasts in the car or in my craft room. Keep cool, friends! 💙

    So this copyright thing is a real murky issue. I’ve talked to a lot of people in all walks of life about this, and some of these people were even lawyers. The bottom line is that you can copyright your instructions as fixed on the pattern that you publish, but you cannot copyright the “idea”, or in this case, the design of your quilt. This means that anyone who is willing to create your design in their own version of EQ8, and create their own instructions for the construction of the quilt, is perfectly free to sell their version. Of course, their work is just as open for someone else to recreate, so trying this course of action is a real loser of an idea in the long run. At least, that is my understanding, based on lectures and RUclips videos and searches of other information on the internet. I AM NOT A LAWYER. As I said at the top, copyright for sewing and quilting *ideas* (aka *designs*) is a really murky area. I agree, you would not want to share your EQ8 files. That could get so very messy.

    I have an Amazon Fire tablet and I cannot participate in a streaming chat. The device itself doesn't support the function.

    Can you please link us or tell us what pillow inserts you use?
    I haven't been making pillow covers because I haven't found a good insert.

    I understand why your listener wanted the eq files to help her with the coloring of the quilt. It would save her time and money and allow her to spend that extra time quilting. Once a purchaser has the pattern in hand she could copy it and share with any and all. All of the block sizes and cutting sizes are included. If you are worried about this happening then you would need to come up with a way to prevent this. Perhaps you could offer that file as an extra for an extra charge. That way you limit the amount of eq files floating around. But I have seen quilt patterns and books sold used at garage sales, thrift shops, and on Amazon. You wouldn’t receive royalties from those sales. Having said this I would never support someone who was copying another person’s patterns, books, work, etc. to sell. It is illegal.

    For me it's while I'm exercising. I can listen to you but I don't have to be looking at you the entire workout.
