For four weeks in the summer of 1975, The Manhattan Transfer had their own summer replacement television show on CBS. The show was shown on Sunday evenings from 7:30 - 8:30 P.M. from August 10 through August 31. The show was a variety show with a potpourri of songs and humor. Archie Hahn was the only series regular who was not a member of the group. His principal contribution was as the character Doughie Duck in various comedy spots. This video is taken from one of those shows.

You forgot the affectionate irony they bring to their interpretation. Yeah, it's corny. So they celebrate that corniness, cheesiness, all the quaint musical conventions of bygone musical eras. They love the music, and it makes them laugh too. What a combination.
Great stuff. I'm not convinced, though, that this song is really about coffee. I suspect it's about something much less legal. (I note in passing that the 'guy in the yellow jacket' is actually the closest thing this band has to a leader, being the only constant member since the very first lineup. And this is a silly song, so it needs a silly person singing that part.) One of the weirdest hit singles ever.

His name is Tim Hauser. He was the one who formed the Manhattan Transfer!
