No words to describe. A masterpiece of the '70s...
Quelle magnifique interprétation de cette merveilleuse chanson
What a marvellous song. What a performance!
Laurel sings so simply and at the same time right now and forever. Admiration!
I saw her perform this (live) at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. in 1978. It was the "Transfer" with the Air Force band in their "guest artist" series of free concerts. It is one of my life's best memories of any performance of anything EVER !! .. I am SO GLAD her performance is captured and available. I know I have watched this at least 100 times since it was posted.
This song is incredibly moving - a superb performance by Laurel. I have to admit I have NO idea what she's singing about but the emotion in this song amkes me shed a tear every time I hear it!

Que ma vie s'est arrêtée
Quand tu m'as quitté
Sans me décourager pourtant
Et tu me regardes

Holy moly is this actually Barbara Dickson!? ❤ Two legends in one RUclips video!
The first time I saw this song performed I was blown away - still am so many decades later! Laurel Masse is utterly unique in beauty and voice.
...and that, folks, is how to knock it out of the park! Beautifully heartfelt performance. Thank you Laurel, Alan, Janis and Tim.
My mum would play this album all the time when I was a child - it marked my imagination as of today, thank you for the upload 🥰
Laurel is the complete woman, still to this day I listen to her sing and feel so calm inside
Fabulous. Her delivery to the camera is as if she is singing to you.
Beautifully sung!
I'm just blown away by this performance.
Love the way the song 3:38s gathers pace to reach that magnificent crescendo just like ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All... (lyrics/song section) "But you see...The winner takes it all" etc.
Laurel Masse creates a performance of astounding brilliance and absolute mastery of her chosen art. Some singers are not just born, they are sent from heaven!!!!
At the first time I saw this song! Impressive and beautiful! Thank you!
She took on so many songs so difficult most singers would just run away from them screaming in fear
I love, LOVE the Laurel ManTran! What a stunning vocal, brava, Laurel!!
LAUREL, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL IN MANY WAYS JUST LOVE THE WAY YOU LOOK AND SING !! 💘 xxxx
I had never seen Laurel sing this until now. Thanks so much for putting it up here. The song and her voice are both wonderful. If you love the song, you need to have it translated to fully get it's power and sad sad story.
WHAT A PERFORMANCE. I watched this on TV at the time and have never forgotten it. Supreme.
ONE of my favorites of all time by this group and no one sings it better....
Laurel, so WONDERFUL!!!! What a performance, what a voice, I love it!
Laurel is a personal friend. Isn't she wonderful?
Laurel's 'tour de force'. This clip is more than 30 years old. I wonder if she still performs it. I love the aching oo-ooh that comes in the third line of the second run through the chorus. Where do the lyrics say that? The way it builds is just spine-tingling.
Quelle chanson! Quelle chanteuse! Magnifique, ma cherie.
I'm in Ireland. And its now November 2020. There is something about this woman .just something.
This & Lush Life are my favorites of Laurels songs of the era. Both done so incredibly well.
What a fantastic performance I`m in awe
Simply brilliant!
Wow! She was great! I love that song...even if it is in French!
Pure talent!! more should hear this it deserves it!!
Un Chef d'œuvre de
MICHEL JONAZS
Saw this or a very similar performance in August 1978. It was shown on BBC, I am sure. Went out and bought Pastiche (the album), which is fab from start to finish. This song is incredible and performed to perfection.
saw that performance as well. Saw them live in London in 79, I believe
Totally agree with you This song is from a French singer composer Michel Jonas I loved it by Jonas but but with Laurel Masse it is fabulous
I also have the dvd Pastiche and still listen to it Those artists are so talented they also sing another French song "Malaise en Malaisie" from Alain Chamfort and Serge Gainsbourg very nicely
LAUREL, GREAT VOICE, GREAT LOOKS LOVE YER! 💋👍
Fantastica!!!
Hi, emgasu.
This was recorded before the accident. After it, I had such serious injuries from which to recover, that I needed to leave the group.
About the mouth - there aren't a lot of wide-open vowel sounds in French, so no wide-open mouth was needed. No one has asked that before - you are very observant!
Blessings, Laurel
Franchement : amazing peformance! i am not good enough in english to say how much you captured the feeling of this song. But be proud. it was very, very good...
I bought 'Pastiche " many years ago and have always loved it. I hope you read this Laurel as I still and always will love Manhattan Transfer... and i love you too, Thanks for the memories.
@@MrFrampo56 Exactly like me! I bought Pastiche, fell in love with Manhattan Transfer and was enchanted by this song - I hope that Laurel Massé can read these lines, with admiration from Italy
Bless you Laurel ❤️
Laurel, I have been The Msnhattzn Trznsfer's #1 fzn since about 1972....when I was 10 years old! I gzve followed them all these ye a rs, and was do sorry when I first heard that you had left. However, when I hesrd thecreadon, I was so concerned. All I remember is that it was a car accident.....how frightening. Was it during your period of recuperation that you had decided to leave The Manhattan Transfer? If so, why, may I ask? Fod you simply want to brsnch out on your own?
I actually had the pleasure of seeing you, soli, perform at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL about twenty-five years ago...perhaps longer. It was a great concert. I would li e to read your autobiography....if you ever write one! If you ever read this note, please know that I'll slwsys live your vouce, and thank you for years and years of glorious music.
Best Wishes!!!
Magnifique !!!
I could watch this a thousand times!
I made a n agreement with some mates a few weeks ago to produce my definitive list for desert island discs ( a programme where you initially name your top eight songs/tracks to take to an island) This was one of them; it reminds me of when my partner and I were separated for a few months because of visa restrictions. That was 25 years ago and we are still togeteher in the same country. Love this song!
Beautifully sang and a beautiful lady.❤
Wow! Laurel Masse is just fabulous with her pitch and diction - is she French, or French Canadian? She just absolutely nailed the French in this song!! Ms. Masse: congratulations on your work at Yale, and also on the new, smaller apartment! Blessings, Bernie
Just found this magnificent video. And ten years after your comment, I totally agree with you.
My house mate (and landlady) had bought The Manhattan LP Pastiche mistaking it for the Woody Allen Film Soundtrack of the Film of the same name (!!! These things happened in '70s London). At the same time a 2 year Engagement to be married I had made was breaking up! - I wore this track out as it 'captured my feelings' For me it revived passion like Piaf - which coming from a Welshman is no small compliment. Should be in anyone's "break up" list
what a fantastic performance Laural ,I`m falling in love again Your the tops
Brilliant song
Flawless!
perfection - i listen to this all the time in my car, at home - usually at ful blast on earphones..lol.
Being in the UK, it's not often I'd hear US artists sing 'chanson' on TV. That upper register is exhilarating.
Magnifique Laurel x.
Merci Michel Jonasz Who created Thatcher song and sing it sooooo well.
I don't understand a word, but I'm mesmerized by her beauty and her talent.
same here
I love this song.
I'm a mess...... phooey.
I've just experienced true love in a song
Easily the best version of this!
the drama of this is great, even with a few flat pitched notes from Laurel. She sells it theatrically, which is more important than a few clams most wouldn't hear except someone like me, whose wife is a vocal instructor and music teacher. I would hear her teaching in the other room and over time it caused certain things, even minor glitches to leap out at me.
Bravo ! Bravo !
Wow incredible gem.
I'm in love with Laurel Masse and I'M NOT SORRY!
I'm in love
loved walk in love in the 70s, this is as good as that
FABULOUS
awesome, red head
Great song and video. Its all done in one take with no edits.
Just Freaking Awesome...
Laurel performs it live on the Transfer Live CD re-issue, but it's badly distorted like most of the CD, so avoid it. She's stunning and arresting (est-ce que le meme chose?)- her interpretation evokes the Quebec chanteuse Fabienne Thibault (vocal range) and the French cabaret star Charles Aznavour (dramatic intensity).
Now Laurel and Janis return to sing TOGETHER AGAIN !! they have formed together with Lauren Kinhan the vocal group called "JALALA"
The title is "Je voulais te dire que je t'attends," and it means roughly "I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you." If you search for this name, you should be able to find the French lyrics and an English translation... Bonne chance!
Why didn't I love this 30 years ago. Oh, yeah, I was stupid.

It's probably just me, but I think Laurel looks like a red haired Stockard Channing in this clip...LOL...and before anyone thinks that's some kind of insult, I happen to love both ladies and I admire both quite a lot! This is a beautiful (yet very sad) song! I was sorry when Laurel left the MT, but all the members of MT are AWESOME!!!

Sergios345--Hi and thanks for posting the vidio, I love Laurel and the performance is a thing of beauty and power. Since I don't speak French if there is anyone who could at least tell me the title of the song that would be nice. If there was a translation of the lyric it would be even better. (and please don't suggest babelfish because it is more confusing than helpful.)

I wanted to tell you that I am waiting.
it doesn't matter if I lose my time.
I am waiting for you, I am waiting for you all the time
Without discourage me yet.
like someone who has none anymore
sleeping near his phone,
And he smile when he's waked
But it was only the Sun
I wanted to tell you that I am waiting.
it doesn't matte if I lose my time.
I am waiting for you, I am waiting all the time,
Tonight, tomorrow, anytime.
like someone who has none anymore
sleeping near his phone
And who seeks you when he wake up
Alone in the sun, I am waiting.
I will put my heart in aluminum foil,
My phone number to the absent subscribers .
My love songs will remain there in my piano,
I threw the piano key in the water.
I will go to see the kings of the antique market.
Sell my heart three fifty francs.
You knew listening so well,
that my life has stopped
When you left me
Merci, ramserge!
The other day I saw someone who looks like you
And the street was like a trembling photo
If you are passing the day where I take a walk,
If it's really you, I can already see the scene.
I look at you
And you look at me
I just watched this amazing vidéo. About the meaning of this song, it’s quite difficult to translate it, just keep in mind the phonetic works very fine. Redhead sings it incredibly well, and her french interpretation is near perfection. Hopefully, she keeps a thin part of her native american accent, so sexy ...I don’t think she’s a french canadian. The story told, originally sang by a male singer, talks about « I ‘m waiting for you », with the feeling that you won’t come back ... She sing’s it with a hint of madness a female in love should do.
