Exactly. The order came from an apparently kind and trustworthy man looking to eliminate a supposedly criminal threat to his kingdom. Makes sense he'd take on the job knowing his background and the types of jobs he takes :)
I like your analysis of why Puss the character of the series would go after an ogre, but I loved the reason behind is because in the original story he killed a shapeshifting ogre

Technically Puss in Boots was still lable an Outlaw by the time the event Shrek 2 happens he must have took odd jobs from time to time, so being hired to assassinate Shrek wouldn't be something he wouldn't do.
during the first 2 Shrek movies ogres were viewed as monsters so many wouldn't really care if he killed one
He is a fearless hero as mentioned in the Last Wish! But what he didn’t know is how he and Shrek would become friends. Puss is a great guy!

Now tell us why the famous ogre killer was so helpless against shrek, especially since Shrek is shown to be kind of small and weak compared to other ogres in shrek 4. (Though maybe living through years of war just made them bigger and stronger compared to Shrek that lives through relatively peaceful times) and why he'd opt to drop his boots and sword to try and kill shrek by scratching at him. Like if he could carve a P into Shrek's shirt he could slit his throat so he clearly wasn't taking it seriously, but why not?

Puss in boots is the interesting Shrek character out there! He even had his own movies from 2011 in Puss in boots it shows how Puss in boots was before he was in Shrek 2, and then Puss in boots the last wish the recent Puss in boots movie!

1:58 I was watching Shrek 2 the other day and I cannot be the only person who didn't know the ugly stepsister, Doris, is voiced by the late great Larry King
Despite how the ugly stepsister told the king how Puss was the only one who could eliminate an ogre, Puss was very quick to giving up and pleading for mercy from Shrek and donkey. So it’s possible Puss may have taken out other ogres before or perhaps he merely made those claims as to add to the overall legend of Puss n Boots.
Are we sure that ALL of Puss in Boots is a prequel, or just the flashback proper?
I think he did that for the money or because he's a wanted cat so maybe he thought that if he didn't kill him he would be dead

I think one of the reasons why Puss in Boots agreed to kill Shrek is because in his Fairy tale he killed a shapeshifting Orge by eating him. After Puss tricked him into turning into a mouse 🐁.

Although I agree about the fact Puss wasn't told the truth about Shrek, I don't think he ever actually ever kill any other ogre, more like beat them and tell them go to away from this kindgom as he might be connected with the other ogres from Forever After and them take a reward, no one wants to hunts 'dead ogre' and will have money. Not the mention Shrek wasn't first ogre Puss met if we consider Adventures of Puss in Boots as canon or at least the ogres from Forever After. Besides Puss in Boots is maybe an outlaw, but he is not a killer.
