I'm Japanese. TANT R is a tough one to explain. TANT is "tantei" (detective) shortened, but pronounced "tanto" in Japanese, which means "a lot" when read as a local dialect. R is pronounced "a-ru" in Japanese, which is a stretched "aru", meaning "there is" or "exists". So TANT R = "tanto a-ru" meaning "there's a looot", which describes the game, there's a lot of mini games. Same applies to the titles of mini games too. Like #22 is "Totte crane", it's a phrase combining "totte kure" ("grab it" or "bring it") with crane, pronounced "kure-n" in Japanese.
It's all a classic, Japanese word play called "DAJARE" which was a Showa era trend:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dajare
Old school Japanese local humor. If you understand dajare and how it works, you must have a pretty wide, hardcore Japanese knowledge, getting close to the level of native. So don't worry if you don't get it.. TANT-R is kind of unique considering the title alone is dajare.
N GBF You know I actually wanted to learn Japanese but your alphabet has horrified me.
Great! Decades asking myself this shit...
Wow, Thank you so much for replying with the translation of the game. It's rare that a native speaking japanese person is available to do something like this.
very detailed and informative explanation of the game's name and it's origins of the language and it's meaning.
I never realized Bonanza Bros. was basically the first (and only?) arcade stealth game.
Gain ground is one of my favorite Sega games. I wish they would do a sequel. Bonanza Bros is also a lot of fun.
6:37 "Sonic The Hedgehog getting a bubble in the water" sound effect!
Was wondering when you'd do another one of these. Excellent video as usual!
Bonanza Bros!! I was very passionate about this game!! Loved it back then love it now! Love the art style music and gameplay! Played every version out there =) Nice video dude keep it up!
BTW I hate that we're gonna have to wait another 4 or 5 episodes until we see Virtual-On!
Sega Ages needs to step up their game and start releasing remakes of sega saturn games.
Panzer Dragoon says "hi" =)
Maybe in the US, but in Europe (Netherlands) a lot of people played Bononza Brothers, it was epic back in 92/93!
Only channel I have ever changed my notification settings for. Great work as always Coury and Try!
Great sequence to a the first video review on the Ages series. Once again My Life in Gaming gives us all a wonderful analysis of this kind of forgotten series of remakes.
My interest was piqued by Gain Ground, thank you for covering these releases; interesting!
"SEGA loves celebrating the past"
Mostly with Sonic and Genesis.
sega stuck in past rather than celebrating.
It's like SEGA is ashamed of their history during the Saturn and Dreamcast days.
SoftBank47 Even tho these were probably their best times...
@@frataltay4543 ıf sega make their mascot ristar instead of sonic, they still can be revelant like the past.
Don't forget the 70 billion ports of Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros on the Master System in UK seemed to be quite popular but then most SEGA franchises were popular on the MS. I really like the game and as a kid loved it.
Gain Ground is a great game, and on my shortlist of games I'd love to remake if I had the chance. I actually fell in love with the game through the (nice-looking but ultimately crippled) PC Engine version. Like you said in the video, it doesn't look very impressive but it's a ton of fun and plays unlike anything else out there.
Well, it's about time... I actually thought you guys has scraped the idea of covering the later volumes of the Sega AGES collection for the PS2. I actually asked you about it in a live stream earlier in the year and you mentioned that it hasn't been scraped, just put on the back burner, in place of other projects.
I have the entire 33 volumes, so I'm looking forward to the next volumes!! ^_^
So go play them
Very well put together video. Thanks!
This is why MLIG is the best. Fantastic review and beautifully shot and edited. Cheers boys.
Ive really been enjoying these videos, it also gives me heads up on what games to get, thanks!
Great video Coury! Now I'm looking forward to the next Rare after Nintendo from you Try!
The Sega Ages Bonanza Bros is based on the arcade version, not the Mega Drive port. Also, there is a very competent version of this game for the Master System without the split screen.
There were tons of early proto RTS games on computers going back to like 1983 if not earlier. But sadly most people just don't have any respect for computers...
in USA no they are a bunch of console peasants, in Europe we were gaming on PCs we also did not EXPERIENCE video game crash of 83, since we were all gaming on PCs
@@SuperHns Your tone aside I do have to admit some annoyance occurs when I see someone say "Nintendo saved the gaming industry". Mind you, I'm American, but I at least know enough that the crash was not affecting anyone but Americans.
In Japanese a detective is a "tantei", so that's probably what Tant-R refers to.
I've recently been lucky enough to spend some time on an original virtua racing arcade machine. I now have a lot more appreciation for the PS2 version of the game.
The Gain Ground soundtrack is amazing. Created by the same guy who did the original Golden Axe one.
Another fabulous video to relax to.
Great vid! See you in another 2 years!
God, I never get sick of that race select music in Virtua Racing
Happy to see this continue finally.
Can't wait for the next one of these
HELL YEAH MORE SEGA AGES!
I love when I see a new video from you guys in my notifications! What a treat!
Brilliant work especially the After Burner comparisons
Gain Ground is one of my favourites. Great co-op game too!
According to Japanese Wikipedia, the name "Tant R" comes from the Japanese "tanto aru" meaning "there are lots" in reference to the large number of mini games present in the game.
It's also a play on "tantei", which means "detective", thus the Holmes + Watson theme.
"In a world where After Burner Climax exists..."
I mean, it technically exists, I just can't legally buy it in any way
I wanna know what he's implying by that! >:|
It’s available on phones, but sadly they still haven’t re-released it on PS3/360.
@@Spindash54 Very lucky to still have it on my 360 downloaded.
And a perfect reason why PHYSICAL games are better - always.
Tant-R reminds me more of Bishi Bashi special than anything.
Always happy to see more looks at weird and wonderful obscure releases. Woop.
You've gained ground on the Sega Ages collection!
Dude I appreciate that you do this w kids. My kids and job consume everything I have tomorrow off work and we might watch some of your show or another but we are going to the park all morning
I like you don't have swearing in the show so my little one can watch
My friend was a huge bonanza bros fan btw
"Aren't you?" with the head tilt. Smooth.
What a fascinating collection. Maybe not every game is a hit but at that price it still seems like a steal compared to prices here.
Awesomeness please do more thanks
I look forward in seeing you do videos on showcasing more Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 11-33.
Gain Ground was a game I really enjoyed on the SEGA Master System back in the 1980's, myself and a friend would play it a lot.. Few years later I would get hold of the SEGA Mega Drive version and love it some more "yes I am from Europe where SEGA got more respect" . Bonanza Bros is another game I first played on the Master System and then played on the Mega Drive, a game I really enjoyed.. Lately I have played it on my Commodore 64, its okay for what it is. The issue when it comes to SEGA and the United States is most of you guys and girls never really had that love and respect for the company like we did in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, I played 100's and 100's of these games back in the early 80's to the mid 90's and religiously played the Arcade SEGA games and Console games, I never understood the love that Americans had for NINTENDO.. (The biggest downfall for SEGA was bad management in Japan and the States) They screwed up a company I was fond of.. SEGA of today please stop promoting Sonic "Its not your best creation" Sonic is not SEGA to me SEGA is SEGA to me.. F**K SONIC, I can think of hundreds of games that scream SEGA to me.
Gain Ground is proper good fun with a buddy. Never used to like it but I think I didn't quite get it. Years later though it clicked and is a solid game to chuck in the Mega Drive for some multiplayer fun.
Happy to see Gain Ground get some attention. Stumbled across it on the PS3 Genesis collection and it quickly became one of my favorite time sinks on it. At least on the Genesis version, Hard difficulty gives you all the characters from the start, which makes it a more interesting experience in my opinion. You essentially start with like 20 lives but have to kill all the enemies each stage and don’t gain any more characters along the way.
Although the virtua racing port looks good visually, I feel like many people overlook the fact that the handling is off to the point where it doesnt feel like the same game anymore and makes the game easier than any other version.
Yoman {Fez} Wasup spot on, I was extremely disappointed by how it handled, it’s not Virtua Racing, it’s a different Racing game with a Virtua Racing skin.. even the Genesis and 32x versions were extremely close to the arcade original
I was coming here to post exactly the same thing. This port looks great but the handling is very off, the middle of the car pivots rather than the front wheels turning. It’s still a good game but it doesn’t play like Virtua Racing.
From all the reviews I’ve seen online no-one seems to pick up on this.
Sega Ages Gain Ground's soundtrack was remixed by S.S.H. a doujin arrange musician that has done some amazing arrangements over the years.
Important note about Virtua Racing if anyone is playing it on the US Sega Classics Collection: *Make sure you create your save file in V.R. first before making one for any of the other games.* There's a corruption glitch that can prevent your data for V.R. from ever being loaded. It's something to do with how Sega America tried to combine what was several different games with different save files into one.
It's not as bad as Soul Calibur III where it will format your Memory Card if it's not the first save file. Thanks Namco. :(
@@RadioTails Yikes! That would suck. I know my brother had that game, though I don't recall him having that problem.
I remember having virtua racing on Saturn wen I was a kid and I remember playing it in the arcade. I might have to try and hunt down a copy of the ps2 version as it looks really good
Did you stop at this video? I cant seem to find the rest of the volumes if u did. Great videos I enjoyed then both and love seeing these upgraded titles. Would hope you go back to the rest. Thanks for the videos
Great video as always!
Curious, how far into the releases were those book cards made for?
I love how Saturn-Era math for Sega was something like: 3-D game + polygons = VIRTUAL !!!
I hope to see more of this SEGA AGES release. At the current schedule, we might see the end of it by 2027. If we're all still here by then, lol.
Based on your criticisms of the other versions of Gain Ground, you should definitely try the PC Engine version (if you haven't already). It has enhanced/larger sprites and arranged redbook audio. Huge improvements on the Genesis and arcade versions
22 titles made it to the west, i have a disk from the official ps2 magazine UK that came with 22 SEGA AGES volumes completely localized into English. and it also included some Saturn games like Sonic-R, Sonic the fighters, Sega Rally 1995
Definitely looking forward to the next batch, as I think there are some gems in there (really enjoyed the Out Run port myself, despite its garish looks). I remember picking up the Sega 3D Ages After Burner when it came out and being pretty disappointed with it. Visually it was uninspired as mentioned, but for some reason I just could not get along with the controls, things felt twitchy. Based on the footage in this video though I may have to give it another try.
What do you think of After Burner Climax that was released on the XBLA on xbox360? I own that game and it's actually better than the original arcade in my opinion.
@@videogameboutique2196 It's really cool. It's a great update to the series and I think arguably the best.
@@GameplayandTalk indeed.... ^_^
After Burner for the NES is the best non-Saturn version of the game. Should be able to find it relatively cheap, too. Even in 2023.
This has been a really good look into the Sega Ages 2500 series, it's a shame to see only two episodes. Are you perhaps planning more at some point? Please? \o/
[Coury] Actually, yeah. I sorta forgot about these episodes and its been way too long. Maybe I should do another one soon.
@@mylifeingaming that would be awesome if you did, but you already put out so much content it’s crazy! So, no pressure 😂
What was used to capture PS2 footage? It's so clean.
Good video, but we will need to wait for other 2 years for the next one?
Hope so!
Hokuto no ken aka black belt aka Fist of the North Star
GETTING THE BEST PICTURE OUT OF THE SEGA DREAMCAST EPISODE NEXT PLEASE!!
Probably waiting on HD Retrovision's component cables before they do it.
@@jimmyeddy yeah I think we all are. I cant wait.
Yes! Make this happen please!! 🙂
I love how many Collections Sega made. Only wish they had released more over here. And Nintendo and Sony should do the same. I think it would be awesome if, lets say, Nintendo release a NES SNES or Gameboy Collection.
Where is your (Sony) PVM configuration video? We've been waiting, buds.
That was great. Well, see you in another 2 years SEGA remake fans 😆
I sense the sarcasm but not sure what you're being sarcastic about. Are you implying that they take too long to release their Sega AGES segments?
@@videogameboutique2196 ruclips.net/video/vca05IIv7KM/видео.html
What is up with the combing artifacts? Aren't you running these games through an OSSC, then your capture card?
Am I the only one who would love to see these PS2 versions ported to current consoles, warts and all? I know I'm not alone in worrying about how gaming history can disappear, but for me, remakes/collections are a big part of that history. I understand it's a bit much to expect every port of a game, with minor differences in menus and emulation, to be commercially available in perpetuity, but major remakes with significant graphical/audio differences should be made available, perhaps as bonus content on the current SEGA Ages line on Switch. Gaming classics they may not be, but gaming history is something very different, and I just think it's a shame to see distinct remakes/content fall through the cracks as minor tweaks take priority in the name of "authenticity".
Would be nice to see 10-15 before the decade ends...
3d columns is a little bit easier for me because i’m colorblind and the distinction in shapes helps a bit. I agree though that it looks a little worse.
The problem was they let other companies create these titles instead of Sega themselves doing them.
I actually like it. Despite XPlay giving the Sega Collection for PS2 2 out of 5.
How did it take you guys two years to release this
Just because a game is not big in America doesn't mean it wasn't loved elsewhere
How did he get Huck a toe Noken out of Hokuto no Ken?
man, what's that track at 1:26 from?
Did any of the 2500 Ages games get a PAL release?
We got the Sega classics collection like the Americans did
Untimely passing is a good way to put it given that games were still being released for the system more than a decade after its discontinuation. Sega pulled the plug far too early, and I've never understood why.
Because it was sold at a lost, and software sales weren't making up for it, in contrast to the ps2.
TANT R always reminded me more of Point Blank than WarioWare for some reason.
Please talk about Nights in the next video
I love a After Burner on PSVR
That’s a thing..??
wrena79 No, but I hope Sega release Arcade Classics on VR in the future
11:54 There is actually a picture of Michael Jackson playing Virtua Racing. It's on the internet, see if you can find it.
I want to play Gain Ground but I don't have it for my Genesis.
Do you have a Switch? You could play the M2 port.
Had a wonderful time with you guys at liretro this weekend!
I remember getting the Virtua Racing one and really enjoying it. It was a great and faithful remake.
pleass continue review sega ages
It’s just a hit or miss, depending on your preference.
In many ways SEGA ages came out too early. Many of these games would look incredible if developed now.
Do more pls
I'm ashamed of how much time I put into Columns on the Sega CD.
This video made me a bit sad. Most of these games, in concept and gameplay, are amazing for their time. But Sega seemed to forget all of them after Sonic. And don't get me wrong: I LOVE Sonic. it's the reason I started gaming in the '90s and didn't stop ever since. But I also love Golden Axe, Outrun, Shinobi, Ristar, After Burner, Shining Force, and many others, but these games seem to either not be around anymore, or it's gameplay was completely replaced for another style that really doesn't fit the original (I'm looking at you, Shining resonance)
It always seemed like Nintendo always had more franchises and games, but the truth is, Sega also had a lot of stars that didn't had a good chance to shine. Lately, they seem to get this. With the upcoming Streets of Rage IV, i hope we'll see more of what Sega was truly capable of in the 80s and 90s, today.
PS: is it just me, or Virtua Racing OST is AMAZING?
Sega loves to re-release old games but it's always the same old Genesis games. Where are the Dreamcast and Saturn collections? We did get a small Dreamcast collection years ago but Sega Bass Fishing and Sonic Adventure aren't exactly top tier games.
I would snap up a proper Dreamcast collection in a heartbeat and i know other fans would too.
Saturn's version of Sega Ages: Columns Arcade Collection has a lot more content and looks better (!!).
Virtua Racing can be 'patched' to run in 16:9 on real hardware. Tested OK by me.

But Afterburner Climax DOESN'T exist. If it does point to where I can buy it. Because I don't think you can.
You're right, It's been taken off the xbox360 XBLA store, long ago via copyright license expired. I actually have that game on my xbox360 hard drive.
If you purchased it, i think you can re downloaded but sadly, if you never did purchase it, there isn't a way to get the game from XBLA.
I’m not sure columns is as popular as you think lol nobody in my family has ever heard of it other than me. It’s not like Tetris or something.
Dragon Force is the best!
coury if we ever meet i will profess my love for bonanza bros coin-ops until you politely ask me to leave you alone
The PS2 Remake of Virtua Racing is timeless. The low poly aesthetics combined with the smooth 60fps just makes it perfect.
“In a world where After Burner Climax exists...” Lucky for me I bought and downloaded it on my Xbox 360 while that was still true. But for many others it’s like the Wii VC and WiiWare, defunct.
;_;
Shame the same happened to outrun online.
