Le Mans, 1991. The Mazdaspeed team has been chasing gold at the legendary endurance race for the better part of a decade, and the team can only watch on anxiously as the clock ticks past midnight. With a looming ban on rotary engines, they know that the rotary-powered 787b is their last chance at victory. And for now, roughly every 3 and a half minutes, the nervous silence is broken as the distinctive 4-rotor engine screams with a ferocity down the pit straight. How did one of the most legendary race cars of all time come to be? How did Takayoshi Ohashi lead Mazda to become the first Japanese manufacturer to conquer Le Mans? And how has Mazda become the company it is today? Find out today, on the final episode of Past Gas’s history of Mazda!

Thanks for making this series. My grandfather worked as an engineer over 45+ years for Mazda in Hiroshima. My grandparents are survivors of the atomic bomb and after the war got his first job at Mazda and moved up throughout the years. He was a part of the team that designed the RX-7 and the Mazda brand has been a huge part of our lives growing up.

As a Mazda 3 owner, I have nothing negative to say about it. Even my 2013 naturally aspirated 3 is so much fun to drive, and has been insanely reliable. I'm 100% upgrading to a newer turbocharged model as soon as I pay my current one off.

Balls out is all good for Past Gas when you have a desk, but balls out for The Big 3 could be an issue.

You know in a lot of motorsport forums and circles they down play the 787bs win as " Lucky " and in a weak field but those Mercedes do not sound weak at all! Go Mazda you did it!

It's weird to me that the RX7 has such a reputation for being high maintenance but the race car is high endurance. Seems like a contradiction.

Standards are different, street cars are a pain in the ass if you have to rebuild the engine, its expected you'll have to tear down and rebuild your engine after some races, or every race. A full day of flat out racing is a win in a race car, but commuter cars are expected to drive 200k miles without anything real breaking.

Don't know where the fk you got that article from but so much of it is wrong. This is why alot of us actual gearheads don't like Donut.
Case in point. Mazda didn't make the 787 for ONLY 91. That is the 787B as in 1990 is A.
And the FIA already had the rule change going into the 1990 year. They only allowed the previous engine if they had stuck with the hard ban that was supposed to go into affect in 91 a bunch of teams would have to drop out because they didn't have the new engines yet.

I love you guys, but... it'd be nice if you all read the copy at least once before recording and learned how to pronounce names. How hard could it be to least learn Japanese phonetics? Also at 32:49 - Raphael is the turtle with Sais, Donatello uses a bo staff.
