Racing is not always about speed. Reliability and consistency will beat out speed in most any race. With speed comes higher horse power which will lower reliability drastically. Especially a 24hrs race. Great video!!

At Le Mans '91, there were two types of cars - 3.5 liter "new" Group C, and fuel consumption-limited "old" Group C. The 3.5 liter cars were unsorted, and based on F1 engines, and they were very unlikely to last.
All the "old' Group C cars were hit with roughly 150 KG weight penalties - except the Mazda, which due to its "dark horse" status, was not assessed a weight penalty by the ACO. That had a lot to do with their victory. Even beyond speed, reducing 300 lb in a prototype is going go substantially reduce wear and tear.

What a nice coincidence!! Earlier this week I had a chance to talk to our Macau sponsor David Kennedy, who was a key contributor to Mazda’s Le Mans success and actually drove the other 787B in 1991.

Truly one of the great underdog stories. 1991 should always be remembered as the year where David slew Goliath(s) and Le Mans.

@@landonmarcovici8799 That's true, but the Joest Martini , Porsche Ickx was driving certainly had works backing and the private 935's all were very strong particularly over the distance. I just think of this... Jean Rondeau's team built a car from scratch in just 4 years and he drove it himself to victory (and the ballasted sister car 3rd/1st in GTP). Mazda is still a manufacturer at the end of the day and had over 10 years of le mans experience before it fortuitously found an advantage in 1991.

Not one mention of the ridiculous weight restrictions imposed on Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar that made them uncompetitive... Those teams ballasted to 1000kg compared to the Mazda which was allowed to run at 830kg made Jaguar run at a slower pace than the win the year before for fuel economy, 2nd, 3rd and 4th a good result considering. I'm all for slow and steady winning in endurance races but only on a level playing field.
