The Mazda DPi is actually more successful than the 787B. The car is mostly remembered for winning lemans, but if you look at the rest of the seasons, the car was really behind. The DPi was able to improve and become really competitive. Expecially 2020, the first time I was watching the IMSA races live. And a cool thing I love the DPi is that Mazda was using a 2.0L I4 turbo agains Caddy giant V8 and Acura V6 Twin Turbo and was able to be toe to toe with them. I wish Mazda would return to prototype racing.
Took the words outta me mouth. It's got the curves, the deep metallic red was so pretty and it looked so agile around the turns. This car was my pc wallpaper for a long time before the Supra gt500 took over that role.
Not everything has to be titled the most amazing ‘of all time’, discrediting everything else in the process. There’s too many beautiful prototypes to single out one.
i saw the show model at the LA auto show when it was revealed, I was floored by how good it looked. That deep metallic red, the way the grille came out of the nose, how simple and clean everything was... I didn't realize racecars could look like that. Sad they didn't make a new car for GTP, I would have loved to see something with that design language still running.
From being like the slowest on the grid in 2014 because they were being passed by GT cars, to nearly winning a championship in 2020. It shows how much they improved when they were in IMSA
If you think you built a good car, and arent getting results, call reinhold joest lol. If his team cant win with it, its probably not a good car. But in this case, joest proved they did indeed have a good car. They just needed a team with alot more prototype experience to prove it and tell mazda what really needed improvement. Then multimatic just kept that momentum going. Speedsource is obviously a good team, but being primarily a gt team, they were a bit out of their league in dpi imo
Easily my favorite DPi. I had a lot of fun pulling for this program over the years. I wish they had given it one more go in 2022 for the last year of DPi.
The Mazda DPI was the most beautiful DPI right from the start. The Multinatic chassis is simply beautiful. In 2017 he lacked a bit of speed but after that he showed more and more often that he had real potential. At the end of the DPI era he achieved several poles and three important victories. Road America, Watkins Glen and the 12 H of Sebring. And I liked it best in metallic gray. After that they were both red metallic.
Glad this channel was recommended. As a current BP Mazda3 owner, and a former FC RX7 owner, I really hope Mazda comes back to IMSA. Sucks that racing is expensive, and they're a small car company compared to their rivals. Mazda is such a underrated car company. They make fun reliable cars. I went from a BMW e90 that I had for 12 years to a BP Mazda3 hatchback awd. In terms of driving fun, I personally think Mazda is the affordable Japanese equivalent of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" . They build what BMW used to build back in the 80s to early 00s. The Mazda3 feels like I'm driving a e36, not a lot of power but it feels balanced and driver focus without being so harsh on the road for us older guys.
I think the real issue for Mazda is that they are not a luxury car brand. Selling high ticket price cars helps pay for the racing and prototype racing is very expensive sport. With the exception of Toyota ( which does have a luxury car division, Lexus) all of the WEC and IMSA manufacturers are luxury car makers. Mazda's press releases for the decision to leave stated they are going to focus on "grass roots" racing in lieu of continuing to spend on prototype (and instead of possibly shifting its focus to GT racing).
Man am I gonna miss that car, so elegant with that mighty little engine. Spent most of their dpi era as the underdogs yet went out with a bang at Petit Lemans. It was an honor to be able to watch many of its races in person.
It was imo the best looking dpi era car. But also their budget was to low. Especially in the end op the era Mazda was heavily underfunded, making them the ever underdog of the dpi field
I love the Mazda car manufacturer. I worked a total of four year at a Mazda dealership and witnessed personally their customer care during the rotary engine teething years. I worked in the parts department and watch them improve their parts and they found a solution to the problem parts., watchjng through the part number changes. I also witnessed the brand warranty cars that were out of warranty back in the mid to late 70's that had rotary engine issues. This company was totally committed to their name and their customers. This is a great small auto manufacturer that loves their customers and loves racing. I'm sure they will be back. I would LOVE to see them rock the auto world with a GT3 car. They could do it if they wanted.
My thoughts exactly! This was one of best cars to ever land the IMSA grid.. I hope to see Mazda return to endurance in the Hyper Car class and bring that nutty Skyactive 2.0 4cyl with them!
I had a great experience watching this. I had a doubt that Mazda will be my greatest memory of not only made the most gorgeous prototypes ever, but also the most reliable of them all. Thank you for sharing the wonderful story of the underrated Mazda RT24-P prototype. May this car will continue to be iconic. 2016 - 2021 | The iconic Mazda RT24-P.
The 2021 results sound good but there were only 7 cars in class. Still loved seeing them that year at Daytona and Sebring and hearing their rev limiter fire off like a machine gun.
What a beautiful car, and that signature Mazda red. As a Mazda fan, i wish they participated in more racing series. Meanwhile I'll have to oggle at Mad Mike's rx7 and pikes peak Mazda 3
Mazda had really proven themselves to be a very top team in IMSA. From where they started to where they ended clearly shows how good a team can become if they just keep trying. I hope Mazda returns to Top class racing in the future, would love to see a Mazda LMDH running around
Cool car. I had to support em once joest got on board. There was no way they werent going to at least win races. Made sure to buy an rt24p shirt at daytona in 2020 because i knew id probably never ever see merch for that car again. It looked so much more elegant than the angular acuras and caddies. The shirt is literally just a silhouette of the car but damn it looks good lol
Never really noticed how well they did only because I watched the longer races of the season. It's actually crazy how much I overlooked them, but I'm very happy to know that they did that well. Really hope Mazda comes back to racing soon..
Mazda's DPI was not only a beautiful race car (more so in that soul red from the mx5), but one of the overall fastest in the field. They set track records at Daytona with a 4cylinder vs the big V8's that GM brought. I was really sad to see them leave motorosports again. I think had they secured their partnership with Toyota a little bit sooner, maybe they could have the hybrid tech to have a car for the hypercar / gtp class. There is still 1 team out there that reminds me so much of Mazda. Vasser-Sullivan Racing Lexus. Again, an absolutely stunning car, one of the best liveries, fights for championships, BUT still missing that overall GT win in a major endurance race (like Daytona, Sebring, or Petit Le Mans .
Mazda's improvement was quite remarkable given that they were essentially IMSA's equivalent of McLaren Honda before Joest arrived. Certainly does ponder how they would've achieved with the new regs
Good video - Mazda was present continuously through the ‘90s and ‘00s in top level prototype racing in the US though, supplying engines to teams racing Kudzu and other chassis. They even won the SRP class at the ‘01 Daytona 24 Hours
These where my first team when I started watching IMSA because Olly Jarvis was one of the only names I recognised. I still miss the team and really hope Mazda come back with the new regs

To be honest I think the DPi class is a really underrated class as a whole, mostly because it was bridging the gap between LMP1 and Daytona Prototypes, which ALMS enthusiasts will know that NASCAR basically said "F you" to anything faster than DPs. It showed the beginning of unity between NASCAR and France aand lead to LMDh today. However the Mazda was another breed. The car was f-ing beautiful in every way, truly the best DPI that was out there. You'd see the two Acura and Caddy fanboys fighting tooth and nail for supremacy, and if you said "Mazda is the best!" They'd both turn and say "we know, we're fighting for second here." Everyone loved the Mazdas. Also you should've mentioned how hard they were getting hit with BoP in 2019 cause THAT was pretty funny, cause they kept winning after getting like 30kg added
It was an interesting story I haven't heard of before because I didn't know that Mazda joined a prototype racing as a factory team even though they didn't take part in domestic races as a factory here in Japan.
In 2019 I worked for Team Joest on this car and there was not one Mazda part on this pos. The motor was AER, the gearbox was Xtrac, the chassis was Reilly, the suspension was multimatic. Mazda had nothing to do with this car
As an Englishman I can really get behind Mazda as a smaller manufacturer, an underdog so to speak. Their cars are quite good looking, and of course they make the lovely MX 5. They are interesting. SKYACTIV-X is a compression ignition PETROL engine! Really efficient and torquey. Compare that to Toyota who make very good, but boring cars. I'd love to see them in Hypercar, but it's probably too much financially, even if they went LMdH. And that's a shame.
The Skyactiv engine would've been greatly helped with the addition of the Bosch-Williams hybrid system. It could've been the equivalent to the Porsche V4 hybrid in design, not to mention the performance capability to equal many LMDhs today. It's definitely worth a proper shot.
Bad excuse from Mazda to retire at the end of 2021, LMDh rules werent coming till 2023 so they still had 1 more season of DPI to fight for a championship
The Mazda DPi was by far the best-looking car in that era of racing in IMSA. Really wished they would have entered a car or two with the LMDh regulations.
the Mazda RT24P is a really beautiful car, it's a shame Mazda didn't continue to race it for one last season in DPi. Also would it be an idea to look at each of the other DPi cars that raced as well? I think all of them have pretty interesting stories
