6.5 Creedmoor vs Steel: Bullet Style Changes Everything

  • In today's video, we will be testing 14 bullets of different weights and styles in 6.5 Creedmoor to see how they compare on mild steel. Testing was done at 50 yards using A529 Grade 55 mild steel. Thanks for watching!
All of the ammo used was loaded with new heavily blemished brass, which is why you may see dings or folds on the shoulder of the brass. All of the projectiles used were purchased as pulled bullets, some of which are only offered in factory ammunition normally.
These tests are meant for entertainment and educational purposes only. Shooting steel can be dangerous, so do not try any of these tests at home!

Sectional density of a projectile plays a HUGE roll in penetration. Copper is harder than lead, yes. But it’s much lower in density. Lead is much more dense even though it’s softer, giving a higher sectional density.
There’s a reason why modern AP ammo uses tungsten cores, it’s hard as hell, and dense as hell.

I think v3 sled needs more of a gap behind the target blank. some of your shots land where the horizontal and vertical supports are and that does and will affect the penetration of the round as it acts like thicker metal vs where it is unsupported in the middle.
I fairly new to the channel and so far i like your process, you do a good job being as fair as you can between rounds/guns.

I would like to see this test done again with all copper bullets available on the market in .264
You could do an entire episode alone on HAMMER BULLETS. They have like a dozen or more bullets weights. And they are designed to shed there pedals so the shank will keep pushing through. Unlike most other copper bullets that retain all its weight and turn into a propeller. That's why they are not passing through the mild steel.
Just gotta remember... Copper bullets are designed to open rapidly and expand fast on impact. They definitely have the drive we as hunters want. Just gotta get them going fast. And know their limitations.

maybe 4 magnets would keep it from bouncing off - or 6 - if you have thin rectangle magnet could cut notch in side edges for most holding power

Copper alloy vs lead penetration is extremely interesting. EFP bombs in Iraq used molten copper to penetrate through M1 Abrams tanks from the side. This requires more study. Please make a whole video on compassion of cooper rounds vs lead and steel core. Couple of calibers like 5.56, 6.5, 308 and hour 338 L.
Probably the hardest bullet for 338L will be Swift A Frame. Unfortunately Barnes doesn’t make 338 L TSX
Barnes makes very hard cooper TSX Safari bullet for 375 H&H

The reason the solid copper didn’t penetrate steel is because it has a higher melting point than lead. When a lead bullet impacts, the compression it goes through causes the lead to melt. This molten metal actually burns through the steel. That’s why solid copper bullets don’t penetrate steel as well as lead core bullets. That’s how it was explained to me.

The copper is too light to push through the density of the plate. Doesn't matter the speed, 6.5 doesn't have a lot of mass behind it even in lead form.... with the copper just not enough behind it to keep pushing through the density like a .30 to .40 cal etc. in copper form. I'm sure a .308 would punch through.. and I'm not favoring that round at all... it just has more mass in the copper round

you'd get more views if you got a girl to shoot at the steel for you because 6.5 creedmoore is perfect for women.

My 6.5 Creedmoor fired through two brands of chronographs with the 129 Hornady IL, which does 2950 fps average with a 22-inch barrel. Go figure ?
    Aim small good hunting.
