The most thing I like about Satyajit Ray is his sense of reality. He could portray real life in his movies and it seems the actors are not acting just conversing.

To the Indians who dont know Rehman sir is not the first indian to won oscar
Satyajit Roy rated among the top 10 greatest movie directors of all time, won lifetime achievement oscar given by academy.
All of hollywood knows his name but 70% indians dont know him.
Director like christopher nolan praised roys work and scorsese, copolla, speilberg too.
Satyajit Roy is not your regular bolly masala director. He is among 3 of the greatest artist india ever produced. One Rabi Tagore (nobel) 2 Satyajit Roy 3 A R rehman.

A great discussion. Somehow superficial, yet manages to highlight some aspects of Satyajit Ray's cinema. But the parallel with Anurag Kashyap was humiliating. Humanity and love for life lies at the core of Ray's films . That same element is missing or contradicted in so called 'realistic movies' of these days.

E.T was inspired or plagiarized or copied from story written by The Great Satyajit Ray named "Bankubabur Bandhu" (Bankubabu's Friend).
When Ray contacted Hollywood's Columbia Pictures in 1962 with a script called "The Alien" based on this story, they agreed to produce the movie. But later, due to disagreement with Columbia Pictures, Ray returned to India, leaving the film unfinished. And with the help of this screenplay, Steven Spielberg later won the Oscar for his E.T. movie in 1982. Ray was very dissatisfied with the incident and called Spielberg a thief. At the time, Spielberg denied the allegations but later Spielberg finally felt guilty. Satyajit Ray got Lifetime Achievement of Oscar Honorary Award in 1992. The one & only Indian director who got an Oscar Award.

Jean Renoir and Satyajit Ray were good friends and, he often had talks with Ray about how bollywood was more inclined towards the slick, spectacle, sort of hollow glamor and vanity approach of movie making.. ALL OF IT trying to copy Hollywood and get blinded by all the western world influences in cinema
Renoir specifically said, bollywood could make better movies if they get Hollywood outta their system and focus on THEIR own beauty of their own country and everyday ordinary

If they tried to understand Hollywood, in it's true sense, then it ain't that bad. Hollywood in it's 60s, 70s, till the 90s, was so much substance, and philosophical.

Satyajit Ray received the Ramon Magsaysay Award long time back and H.H.The Dalai Lama got the same award today. What a coincidence. One of Asia's highest honors, reversing the spirit demonstrated by people and organizations through altruistic and selfless dedication to the people of Asia. Asians who stand out in their profession and have a reputation for voluntarily serving others without seeking public awareness are eligible for the Ramon Magsaysay Award.

8:37 I completely agree with him.
That's what we Indians in general, and Bengalis in particular are missing. We are proud of these great personalities which our community has provided to the world like Satyajit Ray, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendranath Bose, Meghnath Saha, Amal Kumar Raichaudhuri and many more...
But we have failed to carry on their legacy, we have failed to walk on their ideals. Like that's what we should do. When we are proud of a certain personality because of their works, we should not just say it and just make them godly figures, instead we should adopt their ideals, carry on their legacies. I believe that's what actual respect to them means.
Sadly, now we have even started forgetting them, let alone carrying on their leagacy!

Making the type of films Mr. Ray used to make poses a risky proposition for the current generation of directors. There is a lot of money at stake. They probably view the whole thing as not much of a “commercially viable” option. So, their general instinct tends to settle for what really sells. Why take that honest leap of faith. Take the money and run. Everybody is happy. They probably take into account the character, economic status and social needs and wants of the demography in question as well. I could also be wrong on all of that, of course.
