The rich kid tries to impose his superiority (his idea of happiness) over the poor kid by showing off his materialistic possessions to feel good about himself. Thus he picks up a "fight". He tries to break him as hard as he can. However, the poor kid doesn't lose his spirit and decides to keep himself happy with everything "little" he has. In the end, the rich kid accepts his defeat with a realization that he's not content. Also, him withdrawing himself from his toys, and the tower falling is shown as a metaphor for his defeat and his inability to find joy despite having "everything". "Two" explains the duality of happiness. One that comes from possessions and the other that comes from within.
The shot at the end where the rich kid is sitting helpless listening to the sound of the poor kid's flute, while all his toys fall down one by one is absolutely fantastic.
@@darkmemes953 No matter how desperately US (Rich guy) was trying to put down the Poor guy (Vietnam) with all his might and weapons (toys), Vietnam didn't care and didn't surrender. Quite a good analogy I must say.

The fact that Satyajit Ray made this film to show the tyranny of the US using US's money is ultimate savagery! This man always seems to amaze me. Thank you to the Academy for preserving Ray's work for me and millions others to be able to see!
It's not "only" about Vietnam War, it's not "only" about the rich vs poor. Ultimate storyline is the kid's realisation about himself, a caged robot - and that is way more important in this story imo.
It is because people question how worse and shitty can movies get that they discover the impulse to dabble and explore true films like these, Prachi... No wonder there! 😆😆
The real beauty is - It's never really shown that was it really the poor boy who was playing the flute in the end, or was it just his guilt eating him.
Seeing the boy reel in his torn kite is so.... heart-wrenching.. I know what a toy is to a kid... especially if he has so few... a prized possession.. a big part of his world. Whenever I feel myself getting materialistic, I come to this video...to remember what matters.
It's not only about rich and poor, there's another aspect to it, one trying to be happy with material belongings another living life minimalist and taking life as it comes. A spiritual life looks poor from the perspective of material life and vice versa. Another beautiful aspect of Ray sir is he makes a barebone script and lets audience indulge in their own perspectives. 💎
The rich kid first hears the poor kid playing the flute. After he seemingly "defeats" the poor with his superior toys and destroys the kite eventually, he goes back happy feeling victorious. But finally hears the same flute music from the poor kid. Showing that the poor kid's spirit is still unbroken and undefeatable even after all that materialistic superiority that the rich kid showed off.. ✌️🙂. This is what I think Ray meant, guys.
A perfect documentary, without Satyajit Ray, it could never be made. He is really a genius for whom we Bengali people are proud of. Only a twelve minutes, that teaches us a life lesson, persuing happiness comes from inside, that abstract feelings never comes from the possessions we hold on our hands or displays for our room decorations.
I don't think a renowned and pro realist filmmaker like Ray would purposefully not give credit to anyone. It could be so that the street kid or his family didn't want to have their name out in public, since working in films at that time was seen as heinous and not as glamorous as it is today. It could also be so that the street kid was unable to introduce himself properly and was hence, just used in the film without crediting.
@@views-qw9tf Yeah, and it's not necessary that he was a bad human being either. Everyone is innocent until proven otherwise. I have personally never heard even rumors of Ray being an asshole to anyone in the industry. I'm sure if he didn't credit the child there must be a good reason behind it.
We are not even in that level to comment on this kind of film... I always been a great devotee of Satyajit Ray... Look at the present Indian film industry and look what Satyajit Sir made on those days. Incomparable... His writings, Music Direction, Film making is not only art. It's pure sacred admiration... No wonder he is the first Indian to get Oscar Prize... We are proud of you sir and we are proud to be bengalees for you sir...
In the end when you hear the poor boy playing the flute, the camera moves and shows the robot toy marching to the tune of the flute, this gives the impression of soldiers marching with a band. In reality the rich kid owns the toy but it seems as if the poor kid is the one who is using it the right way. JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!

Don't agree, there are some great filmographers today as well. Films like Newton, Kahaani, Black are some really thoughtful films. And you don't even know about the short films in India. THEY ARE AWESOME. Try some Indian short films.
making a movie is very tough.. for a normal person to do a movie in India is to submit his whole life into films.. it's very easy to criticise a movie but doing a movie needs lot of dedication, hard work, brilliance, talent and some luck too. Why don't you try writing some screenplay.. then u ll understand the hardship of film making

"Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in this world without watching the sun or the moon" - Akira Kurosawa I would urge everyone , who have come here to experience this enthralling immutable work of Ray , to go through a book called 'Our Films , Their Flims' by Mr.Ray . And , the universality of silent films ,which by imposition, and advent ,of audio has got depleted its all-appealing open ended character. Edited : Wanted to quote the exact words.
The caged poor holding materialistic possessions vs the free spirited rich holding his happiness in every little thing he has. Truly terrific from The Great, Satyajit Ray.

This short film was a symbolic representation of Vietnam War. The rich kid symbolises 1st world powers and the poor kid symbolises 3rd world countries. Great piece of creativity by the genius Ray.
This film is made during the Vietnam War, experts believe that the film makes “a strong anti-war statement” as it ends with street kid’s flute sound overpowering sound of expensive toys. Now no need to say who is Vietnam here and who is the spoiled rich kid :D
@Abhishek shukla I think you know deep down you are not that smart and just wanna be smart. But don't give up. If you wanna be smart you will be. Just don't try to act like one when you clearly are not. Be real. Be authentic. That's more respectable than being smart
It’s eerie every time he plays the monkey the kid plays flute. It’s about being connected but there are societal barriers. I’m sure boys parents say you can’t play with that poor kid
Rabindranath Tagore had written on his autobiography that those who has many things to plays has actually nothing to plays. That concept is seen here. So the rich boy though having many toys , watches the poor boy. I am surprised to think that that concept is same today also. That's why Satyajit Ray is eternal. Proud to be a Bengali.

Whenever I recommend someone Ray's films, I try to include this film within the top 5 films. Not only because it's an excellent piece of work, but also this film is an example on how beautifully metaphors can be portrayed on screen, without sophistication and ornaments in such a short time frame. Two has always been one of my favourite Ray's works. Glad that Academy restored it.
1.Pather Panchali (A Song of the Little Road) 2.Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha) 3.Sonar Kella (The Fortress) 4.Hirak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds) 5.Charulata (The Lonely Wife)
Here is my recommended 5 films (These are not necessarily my favourites) in no particular order: 1. Two 2. Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) 3. Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) [If you can, watch Apu Trilogy: these three films together is the face of Indian cinema to the world.] 4. Nayak (The Hero) 5. Seemabaddha (Company Limited)
I miss this type of content, no unnecessary background music, sound of nature, realism, truth. I guess this Is all I miss in today's film showing us fantasies rather than realities.
Being a bengali I feel so lucky because I can enjoy his creation in Bengali exactly what he wrote or made. He was actually a multifarious. He's one of the best Bengali ever .
Did any one noticed at 5:25 ,when the rich kid point his gun towards the poor kid with bow & arrow. Poor kid became sad as he realizes that he can't fight with bow & arrow with a kid carrying a gun. This show the world history that how people with guns & money defeated poor people who have no advance weapon to fight, as they always have there traditional weapon. And this is right now is still happening.
when the opponent dont have same weapon then he/she shouldn't figth , they should use same weapon or no weapons , see mahabharat and ramayan when RAM didn't had charriot ravan didn't fought , ravan fought when RAM got charriot from lord Indra , which is called law of war
I was expecting a climax where the guy in outdoors would bring on some friends and playing with them and the rich guy couldn't match it with plethora of toys he had.
We are lucky that a genious like Ray was born in our country and we can enjoy his films and writings in our mother language. This is also an awsome piece of work.
That ending is hauntingly beautiful. The editing, score, acting, framing, thematic metaphors and overall story structure, all are so subtle and yet so powerful and masterfully done. I have learned a lot from this than a film school. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr Satyajit Ray.

Seeing the boy reel in his torn kite is so.... heart-wrenching.. I know what a toy is to a kid... especially if he has so few... a prized possession.. a big part of his world. Whenever I feel myself getting materialistic, I come to this video...to remember what matters.
Spot on!
That was heart breaking seeing hes expression.
Reminds me of The Ball Poem by John Berryman
It's not only about rich and poor, there's another aspect to it, one trying to be happy with material belongings another living life minimalist and taking life as it comes. A spiritual life looks poor from the perspective of material life and vice versa. Another beautiful aspect of Ray sir is he makes a barebone script and lets audience indulge in their own perspectives. 💎
Not a single dialogue is used yet an entire story is told.

Actually, this film carries symbolic meaning from different aspects of views.

"Cast
Ravi Kiran as rich kid
Un-credited street kid" - Wikipedia
the irony is that to this day the poor is still awaiting the credit!
I don't think a renowned and pro realist filmmaker like Ray would purposefully not give credit to anyone. It could be so that the street kid or his family didn't want to have their name out in public, since working in films at that time was seen as heinous and not as glamorous as it is today.
It could also be so that the street kid was unable to introduce himself properly and was hence, just used in the film without crediting.

making a movie is very tough.. for a normal person to do a movie in India is to submit his whole life into films.. it's very easy to criticise a movie but doing a movie needs lot of dedication, hard work, brilliance, talent and some luck too.
Why don't you try writing some screenplay.. then u ll understand the hardship of film making
