New ones will be built to last just as long or even longer. Plus it has more power, better transmission, no brake dive, and be 100 times better on the highway. I hate driving the 4Runner on the highway as it wanders everywhere, plus it takes a while to get up to speed. New drive trains get up to speed fast.

Gosh, that Calvary Blue 4Runner looks so good! Thanks for the awesome comparison. The rear length comparison is interesting. I would’ve expected the Land Cruiser to have more space given the longer wheelbase. I feel like the cowl and drivers position is a few inches further back on TNGA platforms. The packaging doesn’t seem to take advantage of the longer wheelbase. Same with the Tacoma.
I had a 2023 40th anniversary 4runner and now have the new 1958 Land Cruiser and it all comes down to what you value. I value power and the Land Cruiser puts the 4 runner to shame in that department. Also no nose dive when braking. It’s just so much more enjoyable to drive. But If you value long term reliability above all else and you keep your vehicles a really long time then the 4runner would prob be the best bet. Overall even tho I loved it I don’t miss the 4runner in the least.
If you value power, Wrangler 392, Bronco R or G wagon have much more of that. Also each one is better off-road too. When someone buys Toyota, there's only one reason to do it, RELIABILITY. In every other aspect, everyone else is pretty much better. When i see the door and the hood closing on that Land Cruiser it sounds like it's made of soda cans. My 5th Gen TRD Off Road Premium is a beauty. Does everything I want and expect. The rock solid naturally aspirated V6 has plenty of power and has been Kaizen-ed to death. Great comparison video! I saw a 1st edition LC for the first time and it looks way better in person. I like driving my 5th Gen 4Runner tank though. Maybe a decade from now I may consider a used LC. For now, I’m sticking with the tank.
Fantastic video. I've been waiting for a detailed side-by-side comparison of these 2 vehicles and you nailed it. I'm waiting for the 6th Gen 4Runner to come out before shopping. To those whining about MPGs and regular vs premium gas, neither car is for you. There are plenty of Highlanders on the lot at DaySpa Toyota for you to choose from.
I could have done more. After making the video and watching it, I fail to mention the tech, wheel base, other off road bits too. But I am glad you enjoyed.
@@TRDJon No sweat. Tech specs can be found online, but you are one of the first to put these two side-by-side so viewers can SEE (not just read about) how the two vehicles match up in size, interior space, etc. And no spec sheet can convey how each interior feels for the driver and passengers; those are "intangibles" and good insight for those who don't own both vehicles.
Love your videos ! I'm looking at getting a 5th 4runner and love your front bumper with led upgrade. Just wondering where you got it from, and the name of it? Thanks so much! Keep up the awesome vids! 👏
Just found your channel, and love the detailed reviews of both vehicles. Having said that, I hope your dogs are tethered. Otherwise, they will be going through that back opening even in the 15 mile an hour rear ender at a red light.
Good comparison dude. As soon as you opened your hood of the LC my jaw dropped lol. Looks like a rats nest under there! Another thing that sucks too is there is barely any room under there to work on it, I enjoyed earlier toyota models that had space under there around to engine to work on. Other than that, I would love to get my wife the 4runner you got, or the newer one that is coming out if internet rates weren't so bad. Good video bro.
If they gave us in the states the diesel like the other parts of the world it would be a toss up for me. As it is though I would take the 4Runner all Day everyday.
I just wish it drive better. The v6 and old transmission makes it terrible. Plus it’s so floaty and has too much brake dive. Gives me anxiety. Looks amazing though. Hopefully the new 4Runner drive great. Problem is the price on the new TRD pro is gonna be 75k. For that price I can get a BMW X5 full luxury with high performance.
Can you help clear up the weight capacity of what you can put on top of the hybrid battery on the trunk? Does the disclaimer state a low weight which might be difficult to build out with drawers or sleep platform on the back? Not sure if that was TFL or Alexonautos who stated something about trying to get clarity on how much weight can be placed over the hybrid battery on the trunk.
Want to like the new LC so badly, though as silly as this sounds - not having the bottom hand slot at the bottom of the steering wheel is a deal breaker for me. Now it's covered by plastic!!! Does this bother you at all?
Don't forget that it is under factory warranty and it is a Toyota for crying out loud. My dealer threw in a 7yr or 100,000 mi. warranty as well. No regrets with our purchase👍
I have both and I think the LC is a better choice . Huge diff in my opinion to comfort, performance and looks awesome. Trd pro is for long term and one of my fav suvs and I think this will be as well.
i cant say that i like the LC over the 5th gen 4Runner. My 5th gen has been pretty awesome to me but i am definitely liking the new tacoma more these days. loving your content coverage jon!
I'm considering exactly this upgrade (and the GX is on the table too) so this video really is perfect! You covered everything I care about too, especially the back seat room and storage room in the back. Great work as always. Thanks Jon!
Definitely LC takes it, tech and practicability and design is pretty darn nice. The engine welp, that’s where we are headed and LC has a much better power output.
I got rid of my 5th gen at peak market. Having a hard time thinking do I pick up the last of the 5th, a new 6th, or possibly the LC. My big thing with the 5th gen is at altitude is it is a true dog. After test driving the new Tacoma non hybrid it feels much more peppy and the TRD suspension and tires were decent from the factory. I figure the 6th gen will be similar components. Just feels like all the new vehicles are more cheaply built. Especially the Tundra interior. We shall see... Thanks for the video!
@@dREaDneck_Motoas a mechanic for 37 years, I’ve replaced more part time 4 wheel drive units than full time AWD units. They have a tendency to seize up when not used. Plus on long drives in bad weather, you are not supposed to drive in 4Hi, so it’s not as safe as a full time. Part time is perfect for off roaders who do it every day. Full time is better for daily drivers who still go off road.
I had a 2019 and had to decide on 5 more years of Kaizen on a 2024 4Runner or go with Land Cruiser, 2025 4Runner or GX550. The GX was simply too expensive for what I would be getting for an upgraded 2024 4Runner which would be bulletproof. The turbos are still having issues. So, I had bought a bunch of premo upgrades for the 2019 but didn’t install them yet. I traded in the 2019 for the 2024 and am adding all the upgrades to the 2024. I know it will last and I still love the appearance and features. The 2024 has the radar and I’m getting to the point where that’s a real plus and the only modern feature that I need.
I'll be trading up to the LC, Just waiting until the right one comes in. The reason for me is my age I would like to be more comfortable during my daily commute.
Thanks for this comparison. I was wondering if the 5th gen 4R felt like you are sitting on the floor like with Tacomas. The LC’s driver seating position may be the deciding factor for me. I have long legs and a short torso, so the LC is probably the better option. Will try them both first.
For me, I have always wanted a 5th Gen Forerunner but at my height, the driving position is a no go. I am going to check out the new LC as I would like to get back to Toyota for my off road whichever.
One other thing, if you see this. Can you review the upgraded audio you have in the 1st edition? I believe it's the same as the Land Cruiser edition premium package too. How consistent is the Apple Car Play connection? Overall good/bad/meh?
went and checked out a Land Cruiser today, and honestly it felt smaller. Especially in the driver seat. I'm a big guy, 6ft tall, 300lbs, and my head was sticking out of the sunroof on the land cruiser. kind of odd. very cool vehicle, but i'm gonna stick with my 5th Gen 4runner.
LC Cargo area weight capacity is around 120 lbs. Which means you could have issues if you exceed that weight with drawers, a fridge or other gear. Wish you would have addressed that.
I have a 2016 sr5, thing is a trooper. 200k miles and drives like it has 80k. I want to like the new Land Cruiser but the hybrid system being on all trim models is a turn off. Tbh, at this point my next vehicle is going to be 3rd gen 4 runner with a 5 speed…. I’m sick of new tech and I’m sick of autos.
I can’t believe people are paying all that money for that little cramped interior Land Cruiser. 😂 I didn’t even pay 45k for my 4runner which has way more space. And the sucker who thinks hybrid will save them money will be disappointed when they have to pay premium gas at the pump. They sure know how to sucker these people with the unrealistic“MPG” savings 😂
Nope on the 6th gen. 4runner for me. I was expecting more, not a photocopy of the Tacoma. Mayyyyyybe the Landcruiser or GX. Thanks for the content John!
Nice thing about no struts on Jeep JK hood is that it can be leaned all the way back against the windshield by design to allow more engine bay access - does the new LC do this?
The cargo area on the land cruiser is puzzling....a RAV4 has more room! I do not understand why they went hybrid only while the GX can get a 3rd row, more cargo room, more roof options etc. The 1958 would be really something if it came without a hybrid system and cost 8k less. I guess that's where the 6th gen will land....idk it feels like the Land Cruiser is trying to occupy a middle ground between GX and 4runner that doesn't exist
Could you confirm the FRONT legroom of the Landcruiser is only 33" as the Toyota website says?!! I'm 6'4" and test drove the Landcruiser and it did seem less than the 4Runner and much less than my VW Golf!!!
Thanks for video man love my 4runner and actually thought about adding land cruiser untill I seen the real prices bit still keeping the 5th Gen 4runner appreciate the info in this video
I don't think the LC is a really justifiable upgrade, yes it gets more mpg but its also very much expensive than the 4R. The interior space its pretty much about the same. Yes, you get more hp/torque but with a pedal commander you will be more than happy with the 4R as well, yes you get disconnectable swaybar but that may not be a deal breaker for many so I guess my point its just too similar to the 4R and new gen 4runner, the value proposition is not that high. Thank you for the content as always!
You had better keep your 4Runner are you will regret it. I bought a new 4R in 22 41k miles now and I’ve had zero issues. I will say it’s a little old school but a stellar reputation. Best of Luck to you
I am not sure if true, but a few people from the Land Cruiser Forums were saying that once Toyota finishes producing the 1st editions they will make a new "Platinum" trim which will include a panoramic roof. It wont be like the GX550 which turns opaque but instead it will open up. Heated rear seats and 3rd row will be an option. So that means there will be an option for a none hybrid LC. I hope.
While Toyota is your whole personality, I have to say I appreciate your video over many other reviewers. You are a lot more engaging & realistic. Still love the 4Runner more though!
Hell no. I just seen the LC 1st edition today in person. Just a gimmick loaded version of a LC marketed for the US buyer wanting the latest and greatest new thing on the market. Or for RUclipsrs to buy for clicks. If you had to travel off road across Africa out in the middle of nowhere you aren't picking thar LC over your Runner.
I think people buying a Land Cruiser to replace a 4Runner NEED TO CHILL and wait for the 4runner. You are getting essentially the exact same chassis and power-train but with maybe more cargo space and that all important rear window that you can roll up and down. I saw a test mule at the top of loveland pass over the weekend and I cannot wait until they come out!

New ones will be built to last just as long or even longer. Plus it has more power, better transmission, no brake dive, and be 100 times better on the highway. I hate driving the 4Runner on the highway as it wanders everywhere, plus it takes a while to get up to speed. New drive trains get up to speed fast.
A Pedal Commander would fix that for the 4Runner for sure.
@@ryanb8736 what a blind BS take, I’m also willing to bet you bored for Biden as well.
@@lynch42o Bored for Biden? What kinda of hillbilly talk is that?

@@Yul-Uhlu a pedal commander just gives you more throttle response to improve instant gratification.
It gives no extra power at all. Doesn’t make it quicker neither.
Have a 2015 4Runner TRD Pro with 145K miles at the moment. I will probably wait around 4-5 years to see how these new SUVS perform over time before jumping into a new one.
Right there with you
Gosh, that Calvary Blue 4Runner looks so good!
For sure! Yea I think it’s only a few inches longer too than the 4R as well exterior.
Great review, your 4 runner looks brand new. What brand polish do you use for detailing?
I had a 2023 40th anniversary 4runner and now have the new 1958 Land Cruiser and it all comes down to what you value. I value power and the Land Cruiser puts the 4 runner to shame in that department. Also no nose dive when braking. It’s just so much more enjoyable to drive. But If you value long term reliability above all else and you keep your vehicles a really long time then the 4runner would prob be the best bet. Overall even tho I loved it I don’t miss the 4runner in the least.
New technology makes a huge win. Better driving is another huge win. I hated how the 4Runner drove. It felt like I was in the 80’s.
My 1987 300 SDL closes the door like the bank vault. I could spend whole day just opening and closing that door....
Well said and I agree👍
@@zelenizub2036 if you’re honestly concerned about the sound a door makes when you shut it then good luck lol. Also the Land Cruiser does not cost as much as a wrangler 392, bronco R or G wagon so your argument is completely irrelevant and there’s no reason to even bring those cars up because no one is Cross shopping those cars with the Land Cruiser, that’s just plain ignorant. I’m talking about usable power- not power that you can’t even legally use on the road. Get real with your comments
My 5th Gen TRD Off Road Premium is a beauty. Does everything I want and expect. The rock solid naturally aspirated V6 has plenty of power and has been Kaizen-ed to death. I also think it looks better than the new Land Cruiser. Having said that, I cannot understand why auto-headlights and power tailgate aren't part of my trim level.....But, other than that, I am super happy with my 5th Gen. Thanks for the great video. I really enjoy your insights.
Great comparison video! I saw a 1st edition LC for the first time and it looks way better in person. I like driving my 5th Gen 4Runner tank though. Maybe a decade from now I may consider a used LC. For now, I’m sticking with the tank.
For the money. GX 550.
I appreciate that!!!!
They aren’t. But I usually roll the window up as we come to a stop
Thanks man! Yea it is a rats nest for sure!
Get rid of the 5th gen. Who would do that?
If they gave us in the states the diesel like the other parts of the world it would be a toss up for me. As it is though I would take the 4Runner all Day everyday.
I just wish it drive better. The v6 and old transmission makes it terrible. Plus it’s so floaty and has too much brake dive. Gives me anxiety. Looks amazing though.
Hopefully the new 4Runner drive great. Problem is the price on the new TRD pro is gonna be 75k. For that price I can get a BMW X5 full luxury with high performance.
I am looking to make this 'upgrade'. thanks for the side-by-side comparison sir...
No problem 👍
Your rims on the Land cruiser are alot better!
I'm keeping my 4runner, 5th gen, 2024 TRD Pro. The land cruiser engine bay is a mess.
the fact that pretty much every new Toyota's rear cargo area is a mess is the worst part, do any of them have flat cargo areas with the seats down???
Nicely done and exactly what I was looking for!
Glad you enjoyed!
I was changing an O2 sensor in a parking lot when my gas hood strut decided to fail and came crashing down on my head. Prop rods are fine for me.
I will be buried in my 5th gen.
Maybe in 2-3 yrs. Sure. But not rn. New engine and we don’t know how reliable it is.
Yep. Time will tell.
Don't forget that it is under factory warranty and it is a Toyota for crying out loud. My dealer threw in a 7yr or 100,000 mi. warranty as well. No regrets with our purchase👍
5th Gen 4runner is so much better looking. Give it more power and a few more gears, that’s all it needs for most of us.
Wait to you actually drive the Land Cruiser thing is a beast
Yea bro, it is hard to compare on a computer. You just gotta really see them and drive them
Smaller engine, more power- you're giving up something though, what do you think it is?
That LC sounds tinny...4Runner sounds much more solid.
I have both and I think the LC is a better choice . Huge diff in my opinion to comfort, performance and looks awesome. Trd pro is for long term and one of my fav suvs and I think this will be as well.
Totally agree!
i cant say that i like the LC over the 5th gen 4Runner.
Right on!
Just got a 23 armada, has crazy power
Full time 4x4 in a state thar never sees snow just seems wrong. Needs a real transfer case, and then wouldn't need a center diff lock.
No Florida version of the LC lol
@@TRDJon I'm in Colorado, and still prefer a part time 4x4 system, but my wife would rather not have to turn it on.
@@dREaDneck_Motoout of curiosity why do you prefer the part-time system?
@@bd103dall No need to put unnecessary wear on the front drive components on pavement in the summer.
I wish my 4Runner had the newer infotainment but I like the cheaper monthly payment compared with getting a LC
I'll be trading up to the LC, Just waiting until the right one comes in. The reason for me is my age I would like to be more comfortable during my daily commute.
Hope it comes in for you soon!
Current 4R - 5th Gen TRD Off Road. LC on order to arrive 7/6. Can’t wait!
Thanks for this comparison. I was wondering if the 5th gen 4R felt like you are sitting on the floor like with Tacomas. The LC’s driver seating position may be the deciding factor for me. I have long legs and a short torso, so the LC is probably the better option. Will try them both first.
If you want more power in the 5th gen you can supercharge it for 5k and it will still be reliable than that crappy 4cylinder
I imagine lots of price overlap between the 6th gen and the Land Cruiser
Agreed
Definitely keeping my 23 4Runner. If i were to upgrade I’d go with the GX550
For me, I have always wanted a 5th Gen Forerunner but at my height, the driving position is a no go. I am going to check out the new LC as I would like to get back to Toyota for my off road whichever.
Which one will depreciate more 😂
Who knows. Land cruisers tend to hold value too.
One other thing, if you see this. Can you review the upgraded audio you have in the 1st edition? I believe it's the same as the Land Cruiser edition premium package too. How consistent is the Apple Car Play connection? Overall good/bad/meh?
CarPlay has been solid. I feel it lacks some bass though
@@TRDJon Thanks a lot for the reply! That is great to hear.
Excellent review!!
Thanks for the measurements!
No problem 👍
The new 4runner just looks ugly.
No
I don’t like how the rear side windows curl up over the roof line on the 6th Gen.
I agree
4R geared towards the broccoli heads, LC is for adults
@@noctilucent7396brocoli heads cant afford either of them. Nissan altima more up their alley.
I’ve never had a problem getting off the line in my 4R neither longing for or needing more power, how fast do I need to go
went and checked out a Land Cruiser today, and honestly it felt smaller. Especially in the driver seat. I'm a big guy, 6ft tall, 300lbs, and my head was sticking out of the sunroof on the land cruiser. kind of odd. very cool vehicle, but i'm gonna stick with my 5th Gen 4runner.
3 weeks in, I'm loving my 24 Tundra.
Spell check keeps making it Tubdra. Maybe it should be Tubdra.
Everything is too expensive to jump to.
If it had a roll down rear window I would definitely be considering it, but as it is, I prefer my 5th gen 4Runner.
LC Cargo area weight capacity is around 120 lbs. Which means you could have issues if you exceed that weight with drawers, a fridge or other gear. Wish you would have addressed that.
Thats just the cover to the little cargo area
I’m waiting for the new forerunner to come out to compare the two and then make my decision then I like to look at the new forerunner though it’s hot
I love your LC than 4rnr. Super neat and nice. Mixed of vintage and modern.
Thanks so much!
Nice thing about no struts on Jeep JK hood is that it can be leaned all the way back against the windshield by design to allow more engine bay access - does the new LC do this?
No idea. I don’t even wanna try to put it all the way back.
Definitely 4Runner for now. Give it a few years and check back on Toyota/Lexus new lineup.
Cue ranting comments from people who don’t have one!!
Every new model Toyota has out right now basically has something wrong with it or a recall on it. The 5th Gen is the last great 4 runner we will see.
Could you confirm the FRONT legroom of the Landcruiser is only 33" as the Toyota website says?!! I'm 6'4" and test drove the Landcruiser and it did seem less than the 4Runner and much less than my VW Golf!!!
If you were in a coma and woke up 25 years later the 4Runner looks way more fresh and modern.
Yea the LC was designed to look older
My vote is 4Runner all the way. Way better looking, proven platform, less money. If you hate money get the Land Cruiser
4 banger, nope! 23 TRD off-road premium for me and THANK YOU!
It’s still more power and torque than the sluggish V6. Everyone says it’s a huge difference in power.
Many are upgrading and love the 4 cylinder turbo.
You had better keep your 4Runner are you will regret it. I bought a new 4R in 22 41k miles now and I’ve had zero issues. I will say it’s a little old school but a stellar reputation. Best of
Luck to you
Nice! Congrats!!!
Ooh I love the bull bar plate thing on your 4runner! Could you share the brand? Thanks!
It’s from Cali Raised. bit.ly/3Vi0iDw
I hope.
When is that supposed to take place??
While Toyota is your whole personality, I have to say I appreciate your video over many other reviewers. You are a lot more engaging & realistic. Still love the 4Runner more though!
Hey I appreciate that!
Nice job. Thanks John.
Thanks for listening!
Lol I probably wouldn't pick either of them
I’ll take the 4Runner old school over all new Toyota’s!!
