Thank you so much for putting this video tutorial together, it's very informative and instructive, fortunately my Teddy Ruxpin doesn't need repairs, but now I know what I'm in for should I ever need to repair one. I notice the tape speed is a little slow as mine was, running the tape through a few times may help speed it up a bit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Also, I wanted to let you know, I didn't have to remove the motors from their housing to get them going again; I just pushed them until they started going around again. I am so happy that now my Teddy works!!!

haha! thank you so much! I got one of these as an anniversary gift for my wife. it was the only toy she ever wanted as a child and her parents wouldn't buy her one because they were "really expensive." now maybe she can even get a working one..lol
GREAT videos... I got the wife one for Christmas to fulfill and old Christmas wish and both mouth motors had seized... I was able to free them up using a small/long screwdriver into the mouth to press and force the motors to free up without dismantling it, but these gave me the idea if what was wrong AND showed me where the motors were and what I was looking for... THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for these videos! My uncle gave me a Teddy a few years ago that worked and he hadn't been played with since. I turned him on and only his tape deck was working. I opened him up to find the problem and BINGO, stuck servos. Now he works fine and I just need to put him back together. (I think the one I had as a kid needs more help than that though.)
Thanks! I am 12 and just got my Teddy in the mail today and tried him out and...nothing. His speaker works good, but he can't move his mouth or eyes unless I move them. So now I know what to do! I will ask my Dad for help.

I picked up an original metal cassette Teddy on Ebay for 14.00 broken like this one was. 1.5 hrs later and he's working perfectly :) If anyone is skiddish about taking theirs apart and needs to have one fixed shoot me a message.
@timabad The eyes on my bear started doing the same thing! I haven't had the chance to open him up again, but I'm pretty sure a wire is pinched somewhere, or a piece on the motor got bent back when I put his foam head back on.
Oh my gosh, I couldn't do this about un-sticking the motors cause i'd be afraid to break them! :O But I think that it's amazing that you can fix it where it wasn't working at all then it does.
@pika62221 I've heard motors from remote-controlled cars work as good replacements, too. Have you ever tried that? Also, where did you get the gears from? I've never come across any that are as small as the ones in Teddy's motors before...
@blueoctopede I had a good idea today. I'm lucky enough to have 3 other working teddy ruxpins (1984-5), so I took the back/IC off another generation 3 (yeah, the broken guy is gen3) and swapped it with the silly broken one... The eyes servo motor is fine but the mouth motor continually winds in one direction and wont stop! I'm worried it'll fry... I've tried to manually 'massage' the roller-pin and I took apart/put together the servo but same thing happens... There must be a problem with the IC?
@thesllu Sounds like the motor is still a bit stiff. If you have him opened up, start a tape from the beginning and just keep a close watch on the motor. If it stops working while the tape is going, you can manually twist it to get it going again. If he's put together, though, you can move the piece up and down and it should start working again. I have a bear whose motor on the top mouth stops working occasionally, but if I tap on his nose it starts to work again.
@astromariopion Aw! Poor Teddy!! One thing you can do is use hand sanitizer (I'm not sure if you have GermX or Purell in Italy...) or rubbing alchohol on a Q-tip or tissue to get rid of the acid, but if there is too much of it I'm not sure if those will help... Good luck replacing the springs! I've never had to try it before!
what year model is this teddy ruxpin as i would love to get one for my son.. i know they are as rare as hen's teeth, but at least if i know the year i can find one and fix it. please let me know.
I have looked and looked but, can't find a video for repair on a cassette player that won't turn the tape. The green light comes on and I can hear the motor running but, nothing turns the tape.
You are great! Now I'm trying to fix a metal tape Teddy... He has springs battery damaged by acid... U.U I must replace them... It'll be a dare!!! I don't know if his servo motors and cassette player are in working condition... POOR TEDDY!!!!
@monkey4182 I have that repair DVD, and it's a wonderful little guide! It helped me repair my first Teddy! Instead of stealing motors from a perfectly good Teddy, you could try replacing it with something else instead, if you can't rebuild/repair the motor yourself. I've heard some people say that RC motors will work as a great substitute if you can figure out how to fit one in there =)
@monkey4182 If they make a crunching/grinding sound when you try to move them manually, they're both shot and need to be replaced or rebuilt. If not, make sure they're plugged in all the way on the circuit board and keep trying.

I do have one Teddy whose top jaw motor just stripped and I'm planning on converting him to a two-servo bear, so I'll keep the motor and save that disc just in case I ever need it. Thanks a ton! I hope you don't mind me asking, but what do you use to re-oil the motors? A couple of my bears are pretty scratchy =)
in the backround when gimick is telling them about the air ship, i see something mooving around by the chair that looks like a cat or a dog..what is that?
I'm so stuck... actually the motors on the 2 server bear I'm trying to repair are stuck! They won't start up no matter what I do! Do I have to rebuild them or lubricate them? Manually trying doesn't work...HELP
@jawbraeka As far as I know, its a 1986 (I think '86.) Teddy Ruxpin I don't own one if that's what you're asking. But they're pretty cheap on eBay, even in working condition. The 80's ones are the originals that play cassette tapes. They actually aren't that rare. On eBay, anyways. lol
@blueoctopede Thanks as always for the help. :) I think there may be a short, or the servo motors need to be rebuilt with new parts... Inside the gears have lubricant throughout, but when I put the last one back (with the belt) it just seizes up again. I have broken a terminal now from over-fiddling... :( Think I'll bering him to an computer/electronics repairman as I've lost hope.
@blueoctopede thanks, I've followed DR Eeyore's tips, and still bit stuck on this one! The server motors do make noise like grinding, but sounds normal just really seized! (Lubricant help?) Oddly, when he is powered on, both motors work for a split second or two, then stop! I've checked their sockets are plugged fine, I even took apart the server motors and put them back together agian... same thing happens... Oh, why my 1st teddy?
Aren't you glad that you did not have to reattached broken wires and place a capacitor? You would of had to do some soldering .that can be very tedious too ,
@Lachlant1984 The only Grubby I've ever had that was badly broken, I sent off to Dr. Eeyore. I couldn't tell where the main stitch was on him and didn't want to completely ruin the fur...
@monkey4182 Oh dear! Teddy sure is being silly!!! The only thing I can think of is that there's either a short somewhere from lack of energy (have you tried brand new batteries?) or they do need more lubricant to keep going. Unfortunately, I've never taken a motor apart, so I'm not sure what type of lubricant you'd need to use =\
@blueoctopede Well see that's just the thing,It doesn't have to be a PERFECTLY working teddy,It could be one with a bad cassette maybe one that eats that eats tapes or something.you would only be needing the motors.My metal tape player with recognition had all fluttering motors and made my ears bleed because they where so noisy. LOL XD! But I had to replace them with 2nd gen motors and he works just fine. So why not just go ahead and take 2 motors from a cheap bear off ebay .=D

My Teddy's head is flopping around. Is there a way to make it better? I've had him for a long time ever since I was younger
hi i have a plush ruxpin the bottom of the mouth looks like it is open that the bottom of the mouth does not move what would be or likely defect!?

none of my teddys face works and i don't know whether the moters are stuck or just completely broken .. should i bother trying?
Is it a good idea to replace those capacitors on the motors while you are at. Over time those caps age and eventually leak or go open?

I think it`s the tape button that shuts the motors off if it moves for a sec.
