My 11 year old daughter just sent me this video. We have a teddy that is broken and has been sitting on a shelf and missing an eye. My daughters thoughtfulness just melted my heart.
Nice to see one of these old toys getting some love! Wish I could find one as nice to work on. 9:27, Good ol' popsicle sticks make nice pry tools - the wood's gentler on the plastic than a metal screwdriver. Unless the plastic's really UV degraded the stick (usually) snaps first. Another trick I discovered by accident, if you have a plastic part covered in old hot glue - soak it in water overnight. Often it will peel right off! Works for some cyanoacrylates/superglue types too. If you can’t submerge the whole part, rubbing alcohol will help without risking moisture damage.
Oh my goodness! I love these videos! I've fallen into a hole of Teddy Ruxpin. I never got one when they came out in 1985 because I was poor, so yeah....
I see this was back in 2013 and to me it is great! I enjoyed it and learned. I got one recently and my girl wants one so I am looking to fix it good. Hope you are still around with these :)
Great video..very informative. I'm working on Teddy at the moment. The volume was real scratchy . I took the knob off and lightly sprayed some electronic cleaner . Big difference
Some people just arnt sutible for a teddy, my dads teddy ruxpin's upper jaw was like that too,, battery lid gone too, and he was dirty, on top of that, somone seedmed to have broken the things that hook into the moter for the eyes, both fir each eye were broken,he was in horrible shape, thankfully, we fixed him and allhe needs is to be sown back up, heel be good to go!! Hes im my vids, shown with my personal teddy too
thanks for posting the video it helped me take apart/repair a neighbors teddy. one screw head was stripped out other then that np. it'll be workin once the new speaker shows up.
That spring goes to the cassette player , it's broken sadly but that is what makes the tape head stay up or down when using him so he is essentially working like a metal tape deck.
The spring found at 14:30 is what causes the cassette player to fully engage the cassette itself. It is attached on the back side of the player. Sometimes the player will still play but if the spring is attached, it causes a 'tighter' engaged cassette.I have even screwed the spring back into place.
I remember listening to teddy and grubby on the floor growing up, even for now they are pretty cool kid toys... I don't know if anything like this is even made. Maybe it's time for a new spin on teddy.... to the printer!
Anytime I see an animatronic I automatically think of Five Nights At Freddy's. I've never seen anyone take a Teddy apart before! It was weird yet entertaining to watch aside from "um" so much. :P And to think i got here from watching What The Thrift and looking up a functional Diva Starz doll.
Another solution with rusted battery contacts is covering them with exhaust tape which you can get at the Auto shop. It works. It depends on how much of the contacts are rusted.
hello i have a Teddy Ruxpin, you did a great job fixing yours, the spring you found is for the caset tape door, you could have used a electric dremmel with a brush to clear the original battery terminals,, just saying, my connection on mine are like new
awww he is handsome - I still have mine - But i lost the battery holder closer- His top of his mouth always fall's out the the bottom of his mouth is always attacted - Plus his roller wheel for volume has static - I hoping one day find him a new battery holder closer to i can open him up like you did to fix the ploblems - Plus probley mine has mold in it as well - What did you use to remove all the mold out??? - Anyway's good video and plus he look's more happyer :)
Hi I noticed you need a battery cover? I sell these on eBay for $10. and also refurbish Teddy Ruxpins. The static can be eliminated with compressed air as dust gets in the dial and causes the static.
Just saw your reply. I have lots of replacement parts for Teddy but none for the store displays. I've seen some displays on Ebay for sale. Too much for the asking price though.
Yeah I got my store display of Teddy Ruxpin and grubby on the air ship for$130 it really wasn't working properly but I think it's because the drive belt on the cassette player was stretched because it snapped
That's a late 2nd gen .It has parts from both 3rd and 2nd . The red shell or the speaker housing is red because of the dye they used in 1987 and they switched to Elmer's Hot Glue *yes elmer did make hot glue in the 80's* because the old hot glue had asbestos in it causing cancer. The blue and red motors are eye and mouth motors from a 3rd gen... The orange wire is unexplainable and weird!!!
Why the long face Teddy? Also That spring you said you found on the speaker, I asked Dr Eeyore about it way back when, (guy who repaired mine once upon a time found it attracted to the speaker too) she said that came from the latch to hold the tape in. How it goes in there.. I have no idea though. You've progressed much farther at fixing things than I have :3
The Restoration of Dr Who OR the generation. Notice, in her unsticking Teddy Ruxpin's motors he is a plastic tape player and also has the different color connectors
I have an original ‘85 Teddy Ruxpin and his top jaw and eyes don’t work. He’s the only one I have and otherwise he is absolutely perfect. His sound is great and his tapes play fine. I’m too anxious to try to fix him by cutting him open. Does anyone have any advise? I’ve tried to tinker with his eyes and his top jaw but otherwise I don’t know what I can do.
I can relate I've got a first gen Teddy that doesn't move at all, and I'm to nervous to take mine apart. I'd keep trying the massage trick again and again. I hope you can get your Teddy's movements going again!
Can sombody help with teddy ruxpin repair? My teddys speaker sounds great and all, but his mouth and eyes aren't even trying to move, ive tryed the massage trick and it diddent work. PLEASE HELP!!
Oh my Gosh- Bugs!! Where on earth was this poor guy kept!? Where you mentioned he turned himself off, would he switch himself on as well? Would you mind doing a video of the little bopper teddy you found as well? :)
The Restoration of Dr Who The battery connect broke as she was fixing it. She said that in the explanation while she was cleaning his battery compartment. That is why she bought and constructed a new battery compartment for him.
Dang, where's the Goodwill that you go to? the closest thing i found to a Teddy Ruxpin was a bounder figurine, but someone snatched it up before i did :(
a girl who repairs stuff naa thats not true and i dont mean it harsh or somthing like that but in my country there are almost non girls/womans who like to fix this type of stuff my complements

Nice to see one of these old toys getting some love! Wish I could find one as nice to work on.

I love these exclusive and old toys, especially teddy ruxpin, and I love your videos of teddy ruxpin and other retro songs
Great video..very informative. I'm working on Teddy at the moment. The volume was real scratchy . I took the knob off and lightly sprayed some electronic cleaner . Big difference

Think you for your video . I love it ... Bye .
Bob .
That spring goes to the cassette player , it's broken sadly but that is what makes the tape head stay up or down when using him so he is essentially working like a metal tape deck.
I had the first 1 that came out, but, in 1990, my then 2 year old brother, messed him up. I remember the speed going up, but nothing more.
So sad to hear about that
Teddy Ruxpin: from shit to awesomeness in 3/4 days :D AWW YEAH!!
Thanks for the video!! My teddy is in the same exact shape he sat on a box for around 6 months and I'm trying to fix him up!!
It actually sounds and looks better now that you fixed it, boy that was a long process you must have a lot patience good job.
The spring found at 14:30 is what causes the cassette player to fully engage the cassette itself. It is attached on the back side of the player. Sometimes the player will still play but if the spring is attached, it causes a 'tighter' engaged cassette.I have even screwed the spring back into place.
You did a really good job on fixing teddy
I like grubby. . .he's SOOO cute, this big blue eyes!!! reminds me of angel from maximum ride. . .:-)
In a part it was like Teddy was thanking you for everything.
I am thinking about getting one for Christmas!Excellent job.
I love all the details, your videos helped me in some of my T.R repairing :D
I remember listening to teddy and grubby on the floor growing up, even for now they are pretty cool kid toys... I don't know if anything like this is even made. Maybe it's time for a new spin on teddy.... to the printer!

That was awesome! I felt like I was there with you. ;)
Good job when you took the skin off and the skeleton was showing or whatever you call it it does look kind of spooky without his covering.
This is your best video in my opinion:D great work
Another solution with rusted battery contacts is covering them with exhaust tape which you can get at the Auto shop. It works. It depends on how much of the contacts are rusted.

Different colorations on components would only have to do with the factory it was made in and the date it was made.
The Restoration of Dr Who OR the generation. Notice, in her unsticking Teddy Ruxpin's motors he is a plastic tape player and also has the different color connectors

I'm guessing the new version of Teddy Ruxpin wouldn't be that hard to repair.. or will it? Because of the motors and stuff ya know.
Also couldn't you have just cleaned the battery contacts? That way you could use the original battery compartment.
The Restoration of Dr Who The battery connect broke as she was fixing it. She said that in the explanation while she was cleaning his battery compartment. That is why she bought and constructed a new battery compartment for him.
It’s because it broke
