I've just finished all 13 of the lessons and now have a bunch of strange and mostly useless but shiny Blender objects in my folder. But I have learned a lot, watching these at 6:00 every morning as a quiet way to start each day, with Grant's gentle voice guiding me onward. I just want to say...BEST. TEACHER. EVER. And thank you.
Hello Grant, Thank you so much man, I started blender almost a year ago and found it really hard to understand the basics of 3d modelling which led to me having no confidence whatsoever that I can get good at blender until I found this series. You have helped me a lot man I appreciate it.
Thank you grant for these modeling lessons. I started these exercises just to have some fun but halfway through I started learning some really good topology fundamentals and hard surface fundamentals that I never thought I needed. You are a really good teacher and I am really happy that I get to be your student
Hey Grant for the very first time I had this past week. Finally learned how to sculpt in Belnder. Gotta admit I didn't do to bad of a job for a first timer and it looks fun and neat abstracty. Also thanks for giving me new people to follow for tutorials.
I am amazed and appalled that there are so few hard surface modeling tutorials out there compared to stuff like sculpting and low-poly work. That being said, I'm grateful that you've decided to dive deeper into hard surface modeling recently with your exercise series. it's also nice of you to do a roundup of what's out there, Grant, some of these channels are news to me. I know you aren't particularly into HSM yourself, but are you looking forward to 2.90's Extrude, Dissolve and Intersect feature?
Hey, how about Hard Surface Modelling course from Creative Shrimp, is it still worth it or is it enough to buy just the latest course from them (50 modelling issues)?
Some interesting recommendations there, Arrimus and Chris Prenninger i haven't come across before, but the others i've watched, Jayanam is brilliant, but he's moved away from modelling lately and makes more videos about Unity, Josh is one of the best hard surface modellers out there, but i have difficulty learning from him because he uses paid add-ons and keeping up with his workflow when you don't know what he's doing with Booleans etc is hard, although he has done some videos recently with vanilla blender which are great. CG Cookiee is pretty good, but top channel 101, i don't even class his videos as tutorials, they're all speed modelling to music, he doesn't even have screencast keys turned on, pretty much useless for learning from for me.
What kind of effects will the new UE5 have on these technics?Maybe there wont' be such things like "box modelling" just sculpted high poly hard surface models??
Hi grant, I am wondering if the creative shrimp modeling course is still worth buying in 2024? Currently it is listed lower than its initial release price because the blender version, used for the course, is several updates behind. I am very interested in the course and it is affordable but I thought I would ask prior to purchasing the course. Thanks!
Trouble is there are so many Blender add-ons like mesh machine and hardops that totally eschew correct topology in favour of creating ‘sci-fi concept art’ that will never see a game engine in its life. Those tools are incredible and loads of fun but they should come after a solid foundation first. You gotta know the rules to break the rules as they say in photography. It’s a very long and often arduous road to learning good modelling skills, there really is no easy solution. Perhaps the best tutorials I’ve ever watched is Make It Look Great 11 by motionworks. The actual modelling tutorials are done by a guy Toby Pitman who ironically learned to model for presentations. He’s actually a guitarist - and a very good one at that - in his career. So his learning journey is similar to any newcomer to 3D. There’s also a ton of tutorials on hard surface low-to-high poly but what if you’re making hi res product visuals??? So perhaps the biggest challenge is finding good tutorials that teach you what YOU need to know, not how to create the latest trend graphics. And for what it’s worth, Grant Abbits YT channel is my go-to for low poly art.
Hm, that Abbitt guy seems to have a lot of stuff. I think i will check him out. Only heard good things about him. Also nice to see other recommended channels, it widens the perspective for learning a lot!
Kind of. At least your on the right way definitely. The last step of the initiation is to make a tutorial and include the Suzanne in it (alternatively, Utah teapot or a rubber duck).
Thank you for this video! Do you know if hard surface modeling is required in the video game industry? I am in doubt about what to aim for. I have experimented a bit in almost all branches of 3D. What I like the most is the sculpting, I find it more creative. However, I think 3D sculptors have more job opportunities making action figures and toys than in the video game industry (which is where I would like to work). Hard surface modeling is very technical, however anything that has to do with 3D I enjoy. I reformulate my initial question: What are the most required 3D jobs within the video game industry? Thank you!
@@grabbitt I've heard that so many times in my life. And I listened, of course. I devoted much of my life to following "my passion" and became a professional ballet dancer. Today I have nowhere to live and I live partially in other people's houses. No, I need a more certain economic future. I know better than anyone that the future is not assured but today I focus more on ensuring job stability. Thanks for your answer.
Hi, do you think that Blender 2.9 is comparable to Maya? I wanted to switch from C4D with my modeling, because of more advanced and precise tools in Maya, but I wonder if Blender would not be the same good option as Maya.
There was alot of content out there already, but mostly outdated, thanks to corona lockdown though, there are positive sides! And I got hooked into 3D yet again, hope most of you get this "Addicted" feeling
Most paid courses about Hard-Surface Modeling are availiable for Blender 2.79 version and that kinda sucks now. CGShrimp have done a Space VFX and Car Modeling courses for Blender 2.79. They should really release something similar but entirely new for Blender 2.8x Till then I will continue to watch Grant Abbitt.
Arrimus 3d does some awesome work, but i find him very hard to follow. His "teaching voice" is so droll and almost sounds like his minds in a different place to the task he's performing, and most of his videos have massive periods with no talking, in which all you can hear is the background clicking of his mouse, i find his tutorials just too slow paced for me. TopChannel1on1 is another i have problems learning from, he's an amazingly talented modeller, but he tends to over explain and ramble, which combined with his accent which is quite hard to understand (at least for me) makes it difficult for me to learn from. The rest are all ones i subscribe to as well, they're great resources.

I've really been thinking about how to improve my modeling workflow lately. So, thank you for making this video, it was just what I needed right now!
Glad it was helpful!
That Gabbit Media guy is good.
probably the best i've come across :)
He's going places! ;)
@@grabbitt is the "50 modelling issues form hell" applicable for Blender 4.2?

Super useful! Thanks Grant
Thanks
You should run for president, your voice is so relaxing
Aramis 3D is brilliant with Max and I'm sure he's going to be just as good with blender.
Exact video I was looking for! Grant you're the best!! Love from India!
Glad you liked it!

Thanks for publicising this. Just bought it!

For helping spread the good word of modeling gremlin squashing - many thanks!!!! :D

I don't think so but I'll check

I have node school
Nice, do you know or have an example of how to hard surface model according to a technical drawing with exact measurements?
not really but you can use blender measurements
@@grabbitt okay, thank you. I see there is not much info out there.
Thx - who is the best as far as organic modeling ( sculpting ) is concerned?
Yansculpts and cg boost
Hi Grant, since this video is 2 years old, was the creative shrimp course ever updated, or is it still relevant as is?
