Finally: An Honest Board Test | The Greatest Surfboard In The World #2

- Which surfboard is the best in the world? In this series, I'm finding out.
Surfboard reviews are getting more cringeworthy by the minute. Here's why
1: Surfboard company releases new surfboard model
2: Surfboard company pays media outlet / surfer to review board
3: Media outlet is financially incentivised to avoid honest critique
In this series, The Greatest Surfboard In The World, I have received no financial returns nor do I have a vested interest in any of these top tier surfboard shapes in our test. Thus, I can tell you what I really think about each board.
There are some great surfboards, and there are some lemons.

So funny how Stab tried saying videos like yours weren’t good and your the top liked comment because the surf community loves you
Thank you that means a lot
@@KalesBroccoli thanks for your videos kale and one of the things that helps me the most that you made a video on is how to catch more waves in crowds, I surf Huntington Beach with a lot of aggressive jerks who back paddle but being farthest outside let’s everyone see you going for the wave
Where does it say that ?
@@cades.clips101 ahh cheers mate what a dick Kale is my favourite health snack 🤣
Having Professional surfers review boards is a waste of time for most of us. On their worst day they could surf a total dog of a board
and make it look good. Not even at my best could I surf like Kale but I can relate to what he saying. Good content once again.
Thanks Hugh!
The biggest skill example I can ever use is that pro's can surf body boards. With no fins. And still shred them.
None of us could do that in our wildest dreams. That's how large the skill gap is.
I still enjoy Stab in The Dark - almost purely just to see the pro's do their thing - but since they did the stupid ass pay portal, I have lost interest in even wanting to watch it. Could care less.
80% of surfers will get more out of Kale, than just watching the pretty visuals of a pro do their thing. Of course, most of us enjoy both. But Stab are really losing the core of their audience - the 80% of them - and Kale is catering to them. Ain't rocket surgery.
You basically doing "stab in the dark" for ordinary people, even getting the board manufacturers to deliver for free - is probably the reason stab felt like throwing shade at you on instagram today :D
Keep it up and shut them haters up Kale 🤙🏽
Got a link?
@@carcorr it was kinda indirect, but he was in one photo collage and it was enough that he felt like commenting underneath himself - here’s the link instagram.com/p/CN4F2IfFEMz/?igshid=egza0d0taomz
Haha they’re just doing their thing
and no paid subscription required... ;)
@@KalesBroccoli but that thing should spread love instead of shade :D
Stab’s just jealous because they’ve never managed to connect to the beginners/intermediate surfers community like you do. You are making surfing more relevant and accessible to lots of people by sharing your passion and talent 🙏🏻 Keep it up Legend!!! 🤙✨
Thank you mate 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Sharpeye is going to be top 3 if not the winner. Best surf series on RUclips dude well done!
Thank you so much!
I love these reviews kale its always been a dream of mine to try every board in the surf shop in a wave pool . STAB trying to dis you was ridiculous . you were one of the RUclips pioneers to dedicate your channel to helping beginners and intermediates learn and improve . I prefer average Joe surfers board reviews, the pros rip on any board and are always going with who pays them . keep up the good work .
Thank you!!
I think the Red Baron is meant to be ridden with keels - I'm thinking keels would help it hold rail off the bottom and not feel too loose,
Agree
Very refreshing to hear honest reviews. We all know that some boards suite different surfers and waves but rarely is a reviewer bold enough to say it just isn’t working for them.
Just drop the video 😂
You always make the cleanest videos, if that makes ANY sense 🤣
Ha ha thank you very much!
a test of Grovellers would be great too and even better in less than average, windy summer conditions.
That's what we really need! Hybrids and fish in the wave pool on intermediate.
I mostly surf a pool in the UK which is basically the same as urban surf and I was beginning to think HPSB’s where the way to go on the bigger settings in the pool. But as you explained and I could see in your surfing the faster wider style boards seemed to work much better for you. Defiantly something I will consider when buying new boards in the future. Brilliant content as usual kale. Yeeeeew!
Thank you Adam!
It's so hard to give a board a good review in one session though. I was surfing the Pukas Dark 5'10 1/2 epoxy a year ago for the first time and it took me a good 10 sessions to get used to the responsiveness of it. And it now is my favorite board ever.
Would be interesting to see you surf some more HP models in bigger surf in the ocean. Great video!
Hope this gets millions of views mate
Thank you
2:19 "FLAT DECK"... damn why'd you have to remind me.
Loving this series! Thank you for living out our board dreams and the helpful content!
I do agree that the Pyzel Shadow was not the best choice for them to send. The P2 would work well or even the High Line. I personally think The Shadow is going to be better closer to your height in stronger waves.
Great stuff Kale! Loved the side by side footage and your simple clear feedback. Looks like a blast!
Awesome
Really enjoy your laid-back honest style kale. Very talented communicator : )
"squirty, drivey, stiff" 😂 brah can we get a lowdown on the vocab?? What do these words mean, what do they feel like? Love your work dude 🙏
It's surf buzzword bingo.
😂
Squirty = alive, energetic, zippy
Drivey = squirty in a forward motion
Stiff = knees feel like they’re guna break because board not squirty enough
@@KalesBroccoli epic cheers!
Amazing series! Thank you!
I think a board you missed is the al merrick OG flyer.. best in the market for smaller waves. Great speed get up and go and very predictable maneuverability
I love your reviews Kale ! I'm agree with you, the Red Baron is a great board in small conditions, very light and playfull specilly with keel fins but it is really too fragile and has too many bumps on the top shep from the first uses.
You should talk about the bottom concave in the next one. Interested to know what you liked/didn’t like, double vs single for these smaller wave boards.
Totally agree.
For sure! We did actually film that on every board however found that it just stretched the episodes too long and became a little disengaging
@@Patrick_whittaker1 single to double to promote extra lift, drive and responsiveness. Especially in smaller surf✓
@@KalesBroccoli Not for those who are interested in design.
@@KalesBroccoli Also the rocker. Probably the rocker is the most important feature in surfboards design.
Killer work, Kale! For what it’s worth, I thought your surfing in first Shadow clip was unreal. It was super critical and sharp. I’m not a pyzel fanboy or anything either haha
It definitely had moments and I can see it being a fantastic board in great waves
@@KalesBroccoli right on, Kale! Keep up the great videos 🤙
I agree
I have really been liking this series keep it up! I also purchased a sub-driver 2.0 not too long ago and it seemed to be very sluggish or “sticky” as you said. I had a new one crafted at 30 L instead of 27 L. I haven’t had a chance to take the board out yet, but was hoping that I don’t have the same experience as before. Anyways I look forward to seeing part 3 of your search.
brand ahoy....have you surfd the newer subdriver you got? I have just got a 6.0 light speed. 32litrrs. not picked it up yet but the reviews (all by pros) say its quick and rate it. noel salas too but then he never gives a board a bad review really as he surfs everything well.
what fins did you have ?
what fins did Kale use do we know?
fins do make a big difference i feel.
not heard any mention of fins that Kale used in the video. would be interested to know....
I had the same experience with subdriver 2.0. Tried JJF mediums and Larges and still kinda funky with both
Had a Driver and a Sub-Driver. Got rid om them after a couple of sessions.. weird that they look so good but surf like a pig lol!
@Nathan Geller I`m sure it wasn't that. They where prefect size for me. The models just felt off and doesn't suit my style of surfing. I drive of my from foot more. Think the Driver family is better suited for back footed surfers. With that said I had a Mini Driver that I liked a lot
That album looks so fun. Ya I got a pyzalien 2 and it's so much fun. Fast and forgiving.
I’ve ridden before and loved !
I feel like pros would know the difference in foot placement not only on different boards but different finbox placement and how the acquired taste isn't just about jumping on and ripping. It's definitely your approach to each wave and desires that set your stance inturn defining the boards compliance with your thoughts. They're not mind-readers. U have to actually adjust accordingly. Plus if your one of the guys that loves the way a huge swallowed out twin rides and yes they tend to just go with the flow unless u want to truly engage with the wave no wasted energy and movement and ur not one of the minority that make a living with that laid back style or the pure talent pros that ride em on lay days your not going to get the same idea that ur ripping with a board right out the box without a bit of adjustments. Especially with the variety of sick boards u were given. The deminsions are easy to grasp but the suddleties like rail pinch and concave or even where the volume is like the fin placement is as paramount as flex from different build materials and where / when they were shaped. These shapers weren't making u step up or downs or even clones of previous successes but seemed to have a consensus of ur generalities based of height and weight I assume and that works generally if each is given the proper considerations and would be in normal circumstances by the average surfer who footed the bill for any one of those wips. I get the clip and am astonished you were hooked up so well. I just don't think u gave justice to any of them really even the doormats of course are going to all ride the same. There for anyone to jump on and feel like there going ham right out the box. There called fun boards for a reason. No offense ment and in person I'm sure I could articulate it much better if this is truly news somehow. Maybe I should read the other command because I'm just tripping and there were more or less factors than I know.
Be stoked off ur ass u got hooked up with so many sick sleds bud.tnars a dream quiver for above advredge surfers . The u tube genie hooked u up and I hope u realize that.
Yo I’m glad the HS Cohort made it! If all goes well from the next video I’m defo gonna get one! Yew can’t wait for the next one!
wish you did a review for the pyzalien 2!
Very entertaining, so many board reviews are dead boring. Can't wait for episode 3. 👍
This is so good Kale!
As an official old man - 55 - I can’t imagine surfing for seven hours. I’m envious of your energy and I loved this review. You crushed those waves.
Thank you Jed! Haha I felt like an old man after!
Thank you Jed! Haha I felt like an old man after!
I’d love to find out how well I’d be doing after 7 hrs of surfing!!!
I reckon the JS would go better with proper keels not the MR twin... They do look like they suit the album shape though
Wouldn't the phantom be the better pyzel to test as a daily driver? I might be wrong but I could have sworn that the shadow was advertised as the more performancy, good-wave version of the phantom.
I’d say so
Hey Kale, nice to see you yesterday In Byron and thanks for the tips on Board choice. I'll be trying out the new board in the pumping Victorian well this weekend ahhhhhh. Derek
Nice to meet you Derek!!
What fins did you try in the twinsman? Excellent series by the way!!
Great review and well said, sir!!!
Nice work Kale! Surprised about the Pyzel and Lost results. But that's what this series is about! Good stuff.
Question here I'm 5'9 71 kgs adv immediate lvl surfer should i get the 5'6 stock neck beard 2 Spine TEK which is 26.8 L or the 5'7 NB2 28.1 L
dont you think you didnt ike the sub driver because it was way to big for you? they recommend using it 1 to 2 inches smaller than ur usual performance board
Awesome content mate!
Thank you so much for putting out such a great vlog
Thank you for watching these videos!
Been waiting this series is so good
Thank you!
Ledgey! Loved this review brock. What do you think of Ainsley’s Tiger shark? Also brock where is that wave pool? X
The pool itself feels so different ,nearly like a stationary wave ,i found it hard to get drive of the bottom of the wave
quite surprised not to see a js monstabox as it is one of or the most popular board in australia
Awesome work mate 🤙. Let's see if the Album takes out the win 😁. Did you surf 8ft Winki by any chance?
good content young man. try a christenson when you can, also Haydenshapes LOOT using MR 2+1 fins...best board ever!
Maybe next year!
I remember kalani robb saying he only had one board he likes in Kelly's pool I don't know if pools could be accurate at getting a impression still it was a great comparison
Awesome round 2... I love the honesty regarding the boards. You are a really good surfer so it is interesting how you are choosing boards that are fun and easy to ride. Like you said... No one is paying you to ride these boards... I think a lot of us choose boards on marketing hype or some other factors that don't take into account our own riding style, ability, and needs.. Just a great lesson for us all that even someone like yourself didn't like what would be considered "Pro" models. Great job Brock. Have a great trip down the coast. Wish that Cohort was FutureFlex but what can you do. Bet it goes sick in the ocean.
(See the cohort FF in the next episode 😛😛) thank you so much mate!
Great series, I am really enjoying it! You should do it annually and keepin' it free!
💯
You should look to the Hawaiian boards. T and C been at it long time. Much respect
Kale, what's your height and weight?
This was better than stab reviews. Loved this. I personally own a 5’8 sub driver 2.0. It’s a fun daily driver for our SoCal beach breaks. Takes a little getting used to though.
I'm getting hungry for a kale salad with shredded broccoli and a nice balsamic vineagarete.
😂
Mayhem should have sent an Uber XL or Puddle Jumper HP. I think that would suit your style and the pool better. but oh well. Great job on the reviews btw!
For sure! But it is also great to highlight how sometimes the performance short board scene Has its limitations
Waiting for this.keep on.more and more please eee.album look sickkk.you must do album."insanaty" model.and lost umber driver xl.
Where's the Sunova? Did I miss something?
I was thinking the same thing, this tests really is missing a sunova. Other than that this round up is fantastic and down to earth
+ the quality and style video you've put together is A1
I’d been riding one for months it would have been an unfair addition.
@@KalesBroccoli fair enough. Saw it in the intro of the first episode and so thought it would be in the mix. I've got a couple of Sunovas that I love. Do a separate video on it if you ever feel like it.
Awesome - very timely video. Been eyeing an Album board for the past few months and this has helped me make the decision.
Question: How thick a wetsuit do you recommend for August surf sessions at the Urbnsurf? Hood/booties necessary?
Your surfing on the Pyzel looked insane
Thanks
I totally agree, can we have a viewerʻs poll?
You nailed the Subdriver 2 !, Ive got a custom Lightspeed Swallow Subdriver Lightspeed ( not Subdriver 2 ) and its awesome in the pool. I bought a Subdriver 2 same Dims aswell when it came out and it felt really hard work compared to my original
Interesting! Glad it’s not just me
shit and i order 2 new subdriver 2.0 after my normal subdriver is the best board i ever ride
Don’t rule it out, I just think the original is really good, also my custom was made in Oz and it’s a super lite glass job in light speed. The Sub 2 I got was made in Thailand and it had heaps of glass on it , looked like a thick coat . And felt heavier
'Of the boards, which were sent in, these are how I personally rank them...'- instead of 'best surfboard in the world'. Were they all hand shaped out of interest?
To bad Hayden didn’t send you the Hypto. Excellent video
You'd be ripping the Ref Baron way harder after a few weeks. Without a doubt.
Hayden shapes hypto crypto is a board I rented on a surf trip, it was insanely fun and the rail game was awesome. Surfed it more volume than I usually ride and still felt loose. Would recommend it to anyone, next shortboard I buy will probably be that one
Surprised that the sub driver wasn’t any good, I was about to buy one...now I’m rethinking it...anyone else out there having one or tried one and thought the same...???
Love mine!! Best board I’ve ever ridden. Needs a pocket to get going!
Waiting for it 🤙
I just watched the video!
¡Maravilloso! :)
Great series well done! Can I ask you what your dims are? Height and weight?
Yes it’s at the start of the episode
Thank you!
Awesome test in the pool. Album boards are becoming my favorite now :)
You should go and try surf at crescent head in new south whales it us so good
Great quality content again, much appreciated! Just wanted to mention that the red baron is meant to be ridden with a modern keel template which would potentially give you that hold you were looking for
Oh thanks!
i wish they sent the pyzalien 2 instead of the shadow it wouldve been such a better fit for the pool i think
Brah the aipa should be ridden as a pure twin too you have to give it a try.
Once you're done with the analysis, rather than throwing the losers away, I will take them off your hands. I bet the worst board you have in good waves will ride just fine for me.
PS: sick sprays on the Hayden Shape!!!
Kale, can you make a similar video about mid-length boards? Ot just you recommendations
What about dhd bord
Hi bud im 6foot 6 i ride 7 foot boards but would like to try a shorter board would a 6 6 be a good jumo down
Pyzel should have sent you a Phantom, that's some magic foam
My favorite thruster, hands down.
Let's take a stab at 100k views
I came from stab to verify is the content is crap or not..... Much love Kale
Where in stab did you see this?
Should’ve used the black Barron instead of red Barron
as somebody who has only surfed 4 times....what the absolute f does biscuity mean haha
....and now squirty lmao
Hey Kale. Just curious as to your height and weight? Been looking at Album's Twinsman in a 5'8. I'm 5'8 185 lbs and surf mostly beach break Florida not so good surf. I'm an intermediate to advanced surfer/ weekend warrior/ I used to surf a lot better haha type surfer. My normal everyday thruster shortboard is 5'8 32 liters epoxy and floats me fine, but looking for something a little more fun. But looking for an everyday driver that's an easy choice even if the waves get good! Do you recommend going your height, or shorter? What construction is the Twinsman you're riding? Thanks for your great videos!
At start of episode
@@KalesBroccoli i see, oops i missed it the first go around
This is so sick bro!
I'm in Costa Rica and I surf everyday.
loving this series... thank you! One constructive comment... the Red Baron would have felt more predictable/controllable with less upright fins than those MRs - some AMKs (or similar) would have given you a better experience imho whereas the Twinsman is designed to be used with the high aspect twin fins such as those MRs.
Thank you! It’s still a super fun board !
Great series, great insight! Having the Pyzel Shadow myself, it was so interesting to see what you think about it... your analysis was on point. Looked amazing under your feet! Definitely a sick board for good waves ... as you said 11:43 this board is "a master at controlling speed" : 100% agree
Definitely felt like it wanted a bigger wave to spark it up! Great fundamental shape
I had a Sub Driver a while back that I was not a big fan of either. I’m pretty sure it has a very low tail rocker and that is what I attributed it to. I also had the standard Driver model and loved that board. Completely different animal.
I bought a Twinsman a few months ago and have been loving it. Not sure if you tried it on the left but I think it also goes great backside which is usually not ideal for a twin.
Awesome!
What camera equipment do u use
hi Kale...
what fins did you have in the subdriver and the sharp eye...
the sub driver seems similar to thr Dominator2 in bottom contour and wide point
have you sirfed the dominator2 in the pool ?
i would imagine small pivot fins in the subdriver would go well in the pool, to loose the stickyness ?
Love this series so far!!! Your commentary was spot on. I could tell by the way you were surfing that what you were saying was totally in line. Cheers from San Clemente!
Thank you Christian!!
Hello, first of all I would like to give you my congratulations for these videos with standard surfboards but I think you are not entirely honest.
The surfboard you give as the winner you will stumble, and only at the end do you get surfing. I see you much better with the Amigo and the Chilli ... I do not understand that the winner is Sharp eye surfboard.
Thank you very much from the north of Spain
Kale, what surf hat are you waring? Cheers, Pat.
O&E
Anyone know what the song is at 20:40 Ish?
Much appreciation kale! But wrong mayhem and pyzel to test in tiny pool waves. You cant compare a fish to a board like the sub driver and shadow! Please compare similar board types next time perhaps the pyzel astro pop and mayhem rnf 96
I always watch your tutorial but I can't do in actual 😣 watching here in Philippines SIARGAO ISLAND
I love your videos. I have watched almost all of them, it has helped me a lot.
Awesome!!
Hey Kale, how much do you weigh mate? Just hoping for a reference I can use as I surf most of the year in a thick winter suit and accessories. :D
First two minutes
@@KalesBroccoli I honestly have no idea how I missed that. Cheers! 😅😅😅
