- Nightwish live has been one of the most requested videos left in the comments, and I can see why! Very theatrical and what a killer voice Floor Jansen has! This is really the first time I have heard a metal vocalist sing in such a high range with such ease. Reminds me of Opera to be honest! Overall I was very entertained.

Hello Charis Sellick ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air festival 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience.
Also a recent sad news - these days Marco Hietala, the bass player and male singer of the band, announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel - there are already 6 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (20 weeks ago, already over 2.271M views), the second - "Alone" from "Heart" , released 18 weeks ago - 1.085M and counting. Then 16 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 269K views. Just before Christmas she made a powerful cover of "Ave Maria" - already 286K views. 13 weeks ago she added a remastered / remixed version of the first one, "Let It Go" - already 188K. 11 weeks ago she added to the list a powerful cover of "Adagio" by Lara Fabian (!!!) - 394K views now. Then, just 6 weeks ago she gave us the last one so far: "Oblivion" by M83 - 409K views in 6 weeks..

Really nothing more need be said. My personal picks from the above list are Storytime, 7 Days to the Wolves and Slaying the Dreamer, but honestly not a single song in the Nightwish library doesn't sound superb and Floor can, and does, crank every song out as a sublime performance. We miss you Marko.

That is Emppu. A trickster of sorts. You'll love him the more you watch their concerts
Emmpu's kinda like a morale manager of the band. He checks up on them during the show. Having seen the band in two different line-ups, I can confirm that Emmpu is an absolutely sweet person.
The three most common reactions to this song, especially if one has never heard Nightwish before:
1. "Wow."
2. "Epic."
3. Sitting there staring with your jaw hanging down.
And all three reactions are appropriate when Floor is doing Floor things....
Don't forget, "That's not what I was expecting"....when Floor starts singing.....

Nightwish is not your typical metal band. Their sophisticated compositions and amazing female leads attract a wider range of followers and yes, they do have a significantly larger female fan base than most metal bands.
It's a crime symphonic metal isn't more popular in the US.
So many epic bands that never get any exposure in North America.

It is in my house, cars, trucks at full volume. Floor is a Goddess.
The guy touching is Emppu Vuorinen "The Prankster" that is just his way of showing support to his bandmates, all of them are very supportative of each other, they are family, they love each other with a passion, and they love being together and performing together.
That was the 13th song out of 15. Floor Jansen is the current singer of Nightwish. This was without a doubt one of the greatest concerts ever!!! You will want to check out more Nightwish! I would recommend Ever Dream and Storytime next..... from this same concert!!
This was like 3/4 through the almost 2 hour show with 82,000 people. Floor Jansen is the greatest female vocalist I have ever heard, this entire show she was hitting high notes and slaying.

@@CharisSellick hey Charis , loved your reaction hope you sincerely enjoyed it, NW is Symphonic Metal (also called Beautiful Metal )the Symphonic elements are from the London Philharmonic composed by the keyboardist Tuomas, it's an addiction,and for some of us may need intervention :)this Wacken 2013 is perfection ,a seminal event where every song is GOLD & better than the originals ,82,000 in attendance for Nightwish, considering Floor Jansen (who is the 3rd,current and final vocalist) had only been 10months in singing with the band at this point,but few singers and I have seen many live move me like Floor does, as many reactors have said there's something ,maybe intangible about the timber and color of her vocals that's very penetrating,and yet this song GLS is but a small taste of what this band and singer has to experience.I suggest staying with this Wacken 2013 before moving on to the other outstanding concerts, yes NW is best Live, then there is Floor's continued vocal versatility on the Dutch tv show Beste Zangers 2019 on YT ,she sings Shallow,Phantom of The Opera,Vilja Lied & more ,then her recent YT covers of Alone-Heart,Adagio-Lara Fabian,Ave Maria,Oblivion,etc. so much to discover ,so welcome aboard this NW journey,it's an exceptional ride. cheers

Yeah, and the "guy who can play a lot of instruments from GB is also a successful record producer, singer, and classicaal composer. And "a lot" doesn't really do justice to it. The ones he doesn't play are the ones he's never tried.
Of course, "singer" doesn't really do justice to Floor either, as she is to the human voice as Troy is to musical instruments.

Our Dutch Valkyrie Queen is considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time. To see how she developed this, check out her former bands 'After Forever' and 'Revamp'. She joined 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very nice music video from this one. They disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, from full operatic to serious growling in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. Then the call came from Nightwish in 2012 to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour at first. But the rest of the World Tour followed also. After she became a permanent member of Nightwish after this Wacken concert (the official announcement came later, but it was clear that this combination was made in Walhalla), she kept performing with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became obvious, that she could not combine the two much longer and they disbanded in 2016. Her side project 'Northward' is also worth a look. The song 'While Love Died' shows yet another side of Floor. Her mindblowing performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country, where she was relatively unknown until then. Also on RUclips there are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor uploaded many interesting videos in the last year, such as chats with her idols and other singers. mindblowing covers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. Her name is Floor Jansen. She is beyond a doubt the most talented and versatile singer in the world today. That high note... that's a FLOORGASM!
Floor had opera training as a young lass but she switched to Symphonic Metal and started two bands before depression sidelined her for a year or so. When Nightwish's second singer Anette Olzon got sick and was admitted to a hospital, Nightwish's founder and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen called Floor and asked her to stand in. The rest is ongoing history.
As to Floor's vocal abilities, from listening to her go from the Alto range to high Soprano(4 octaves), in many performances, I consider her to be a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano. She also conducts vocal teaching on Saturdays.

What range does Floor Jansen have? Yes. All the way up to F6 belts to death metal growls. There is nothing she cant sing. Singing the phone book would have a crowd of 82000 loving it.

I can see Gabriel has given you the basics, and that's pure gold as a brief introduction to the number one Symphonic Metal band in the world.
By the way, there are quite a few sopranos in this category of metal, but maybe it is because that specific genre is the top of the top in composing, singing and musicians.

....Except that, with the Nightwish fanbase, those little old ladies in the town sitting on the porch sipping their tea would more likely be among the screaming fans in here whipping their old gray hair around in Dutch windmills! My wife and I went to their 2018 concert in Miami and, while standing in line, wound up having a lengthy, engaging conversation with a blue-haired teenage girl about the deeper meaning of the lyrics to Poet & The Pendulum and then spent the show up in the first three rows from the stage that was mostly filled with the other type of "blue-hairs," the senior citizen kind, older than me (and I'm 66!). There were also young "soccer mom" families who brought their little tykes! There was even a published newspaper article a year or two ago that mentioned two old men who went missing from a nursing home in Germany. When they were finally located, it was discovered that they had "escaped" from the senior-care facility to go sneak into a heavy metal festival. The festival wasn't named but it was very likely Wacken (Vokken). Nightwish's fans cross all age, gender, and cultural boundaries. Welcome to the Nightwish Army!!
Yes, it's beautiful that music and message connect, and not divide, generations. It is normal for Americans and English to pronounce some J (Y), W (V) sounds differently than most of Europe. I assume your ancestors' surname was spelled Tomaszewski?
@@Jutubowiec1 That's closer to the Polish spelling of a similar surname. Ours was of German origin and came from Austria-Hungary. One can find numerous different spellings for it on old Hungarian church records and censuses. Who knows what is right, or if there even is such a thing as "right" when it comes to names. It was changed to the current-day spelling by an ancestor in the early part of the 1900's and looks closer to a Polish spelling than the original German.

Ok, Charis, I very much enjoyed this reaction, as, i think, you enjoyed the reacting part. Gabriel has already been here, so you know that this band goes back a long way. I really hope you do listen to more, because Nightwish is worth listening to. One of the 1st songs you should hear, imo, is "Nemo", because it gives you an idea of what made them great to begin with. Then, maybe, a little more current with "Bye, Bye, Beautiful", and maybe "The Islander", and "Master, Passion, Greed" or "the Phantom of the Opera". You can't really go wrong with Nightwish, so I'll be watching to see what you decide to listen to next. :)

Being a theater kid, I'm sure you would love Floor performing Phantom of the Opera in the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers in 2019 with Henk Poort, the Dutch Phantom. Also, Before Floor was with the band, the band also performed Phantom with their first singer Tarja. Both are just amazing performances.

Another soul swept away by our Valkyrie goddess. Floor Jansen (pronounced Yan-sen) is the best female vocalist today. She can sing any style, any genre. Great reaction.
