    If you don't mind the fan noise, which isn't really that bad when you're actually gaming with sound, you don't need to underclock this much. Personally I run a reference Vega 64 @1650mhz, -100mv and +25 power limit. I run a max fan speed of 75% and I don't pass 85c under stress tests. More noise? Yes, but it's certainly worth a nearly 25% performance boost over running at 1250mhz.

      The fan past 35% is horrible. I wouldn't recommend anything higher. Not worth a meager performance boost. Increased clocks do not scale linearly. +20% clock = +10-15% performance.

      @@TheGoodOldGamer I guess it depends on how sensitive one is to fan noise and what's going on in the rest of your gaming environment. Chris, you obviously have a rather low tolerance for fan noise but for many, a bit of noise isn't that big of a deal. I ran a Vega 64 for quite a while at stock settings and never found it to be bothersome. And yes, my hearing is just fine.

    Went from a X3450 with a 1060 3gb on a 34" 3440x1440 monitor to a R5 3600 Vega 56 on the same monitor....HUGE increase in play-ability. Undervolted and memory timing tweaks make the vega 56 a really fun card to tweak and gain extra performance with. Could not be happier with my platform, fun to play with and great value!

      Most days my 3600 doesn't even get up to a gallop, 25%-50% is very typical usage. I don't see the need for a more expensive CPU for gaming and surfing. I went 5700xt though.

    I use wattman and I find it working really good. True, it sometimes disregards my settings and ups or downs the voltage / clocks if required but the overall stability and performance is great. I have got air boost oc with hynix memory, the memory won't let me to get over 865mhz without artifacts but wattman allows me to undervolt the card massively. I am getting regularly 1550-1610mhz in games at 0.95v set in P7 (0.906v as reported by hwinfo) with the fan not going over 2400rpm (~45%) even in heavy benchmarks , usually sits around 2000rpms whilst gaming . Firestrike gpu score is well over 22000. I am super happy with this card, despite reference design it's relatively quiet and stays cool (hot spot rarely hits 80 degrees, usually around 72-75 which is fine) and the uv made the card actually quite power efficient (~80W less than on default settings). Not quite turing efficiency but not that far off and certainly comparable (or even better) to the default pascal.

    I bought my Vega 56 for 4K gaming. You do have to dial back some of the most costly lighting and AA settings but it works and it's the best value 4K card out there. Granted I am pushing the power usage with a flashed Vega 64 BIOS and it's loud.

    • @dadgamer6717
      @dadgamer6717 4 года назад +1

      Me too but I am tending to do 1800p. I never know the best settings to turn down and there are some guides out there. Shadows is usually a good one to tirn down and don't need AA when at 4x1080p anyhow?!. But some lighting effects on far cry 4 looked awesome so didn't touch them and preferred 1800p ultra than 4k very good.
      You can spend all day teeaking and never play!!! I do that a lot!!

    Great vid as usual man... Love the content... The Vega 56 is the most versitle card of the bunch because of the hbm2 memory. You can get some crazy good performance out of it and even flash a 64 bios to it to squeeze even more out of it... But overall a very good card...

    i replaced the thermal paste and pads and dont have an issue with the noise.I flashed the card with Vega 64 bios and i undervolt the card p7 state at 1075mv also plus + 30% power target, HBM is at stock 945MHz. Max temps at 78 degrees with a 50% fan speed. As you said the noise is subjective but it is not the annoying high pitch so for me personally is fine. Of course power consumption is at 270watts ( it can consume even more when pushing +50% power). At stock settings Vega 56 temps stay at 72 C with a 48% fan speed. Before i replaced the thermal paste temps were around 78-80C

  • @dadgamer6717

    I just got a Vega 56! Bought for £190. I don't like fan noise above 60%. So have +50% power, undervolt to 1040 using watt tool (overdriventool) and memory at 925 and target temps around 70 degrees. As goodoldgamer says, radeon settings are just overwritten
    Next stop will be to try 64 bios flash to see if can overclock memory more.

      We do pay more here in Australia. Gtx 1660ti is $450 AUD. And the 1660ti would be slower than the Vega 56. The rx 5700 is $570 AUD which I think if you're going to buy a card at that price you may as well pay the extra $70-80 dollars and get the RX 5700 xt at $640 AUD. I'm sticking with my rx 480 for the time being. If I buy a higher card really I need a new monitor too as I'm on 1080p 60hz right now.

    I bought an MSI Airboost Vega 56 new for 250 with a 20 MIR during the Newegg Fantastech sale. Yes it's the blower cooler but personally I've never been bothered by it. Samsung HBM2 was a plus. I was unable to flash the V64 vbios on it. The Vega cooler for the 56 is **ok** but not amazing, but totally inadequate for the Vega 64/special edition. Mine is undervolting at 950-970 mv at all P phases. I did a 50% power limit. Mine boosts regularly to 1530-1550 MHz. Runs on average 63-65C. I was also able to OC the HBM2 to 960 MHz without it reaching 75C during heavy load. At 1660 prices, it demolishes the 2060, so still totally worth it.

    Did you combine the negative 10 power limit and -40mv undervolt? If yes you might be doing 2 undervolt on top of each other hence youre crashing on reboot. I have a reference vega 64. I have i higher noise tolerance. So i set my custom fan curve at 55% or 2800 rpm. I ran my power limit at -5%. Stock clocks. Oc my memory to 1100mhz. Im able to hit 1580-1620mhz on all games. With this settings, the perfomance is about the same as a stock 5700xt at 1440p. Its nice since i got my used vega 64 for only $218. Oh and i also repaste my vega 64 with TG kryonaut. Pro tip: monitor your gpu hotspot thru hwinfo64. It should always be under 105°. The gpu will thermal throttle and downclock to 1200mhz. With my -5 power limit, gpu hotspot is about 90° range. Gpu temps at 70°. Gpu will boost at 1600 mhz all day. Hope this helps and happy hunting for used vega.they really good cards. Just need a little tweaking.

Using the Overclock Scanner in MSI Afterburner I have it set for a boost clock of 1886 MHz and a memory clock of 3440 MHz and I get good enough performance out of it for 90% of games. Also, the HT Bus is set to 1000 MHz, memory is DDR 3 1333 MHz. No overvolt, but my PCIe x16 slot is overclocked to 3000 MHz in my motherboard settings Using NVidia System Tools. My AMD Athlon 2 X4 645 Processor CPU does not like overclocking, so I leave it on all factory settings. For those who already have or are building a custom loop system the Vega 56 reference is hands down the most bang for the buck. You can easily find a water block for Vega reference for $100 to $130 and once you put Vega on water OC/Under Volt it easily beats the 5700. I have an MSI Vega 56 Air OC Edition with an EK Block for a total of $297. I'm running it at 1.080v with 1672core/925mem rock solid and temps rarely exceed 50c. So if you're going Open Loop definitely don't overlook this card as once on water it's extremely competitive with much higher priced options.

    The good question would be ? For 1080p high 60 FPS gaming, for now and next 4 years.......Do you choose pascal ,non ex-mining cards, from 1060 ti 1080 ti, or rather Vega ? Will Vega drivers still be optimized by AMD in a near future ? In terms of efficiency, Vega 56/64, and pascal's GPU, with low power targets are both efficient. And in terms of durability, the cooler and lower an engine runs, the better it holds in good condition.......Vega 56 are available here for 300€, with custom cooling. This could help to boost fréquence @ low voltage.

I decided to pick up an R9 290X TriX for 100$, and then a GTX 980 Ti Superclocked for 200$. Cheapest Vega 56 is a blower for 260$. From a seller with like ten. I dont trust this.

    Vega 56/64 are very competitive in compute/production, I remember seeing benchmarks putting the 64 at or *better* than 1080ti in Blender... not sure if things have changed since then. Also I love squirrel-cage fans, they allow a LOT of GPUs to be crammed in close together in one chassis. For gaming, I would probably put a water block on a Vega card.

    I have my 1080ti set up with a max fan speed (AIB 70%) in a similar way. The only difference is that I have the fan ramp up just before it's recommended maximum by a couple of degrees. The biggest reason is different games create different loads, and you can't tell the exact settings with only one or two games, and I don't want there to be a run away. Yes the card will throttle itself, and there's other safeguards, but I'm not going to be dumb and take away the upper fan speeds as a last resort. The card never gets close to ramping up, but it's still there, just in case. The Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you said that the V56 AVG wasn't as big of an AVG difference from the RX580 as it is in other titles. That's because it is an AVG, and the 1% low was a CPU limitation, so the low brings down the AVG. How much just depends on how often it is CPU limited. I know 55 was 1%, but who knows often it is held back at all. Not a big deal. Just reminding you, in case you were thinking about it like Min/Max. The Vega 56 is a good card, for a 1080p gamer or a 1440p 60hz gamer that doesn't mind tweaking if necessary. It won't last for a long time for 1440p, but it's only a $200 card now. It doesn't have to last as long. That's the downside of more expensive cards. It isn't just frames per dollar. It's how long is it useful for what you want it to do.

  • @JacobThomas0212
    @JacobThomas0212 4 года назад

    The Vega 56 is obviously the best value choice for around £200-£250 in the UK, but I think the 5700 XT also has a place here as it's basically the only next step up, at least here in the UK. The 5700 AIB cards and 2060 Super cards are not that much of a jump over the Vega, and 5700 XT cards are anywhere from around £30-£80 more, depending on model. Evoke, Red Devil, Pulse are around the £80, the Thicc2, Red Dragon, Mech and Challenger are around the £30. I would just pay the extra £30 and get quite a good performance bump over Vega 56/64 performance. But if you can't afford it, go Vega and maybe pick up a XT in a few years or something for £200 or so if the Vega isn't hitting your needs.

  • @jouniosmala9921

    I think the price to performance improvement is at least as important metric than price to performance. And this is what most people miss when they do price to performance analysis. If you upgrade from 5 Tflop card to 8 Tflop card you practically pay for 3Tflop, not 8Tflop of performance. And 10 Tflop card would be a 5 Tflop of upgrade. This kind of thinking makes less frequent upgrade to slightly higher tier cards more optimal strategy from price to performance improvement analysis.

    In my experience, I would avoid the Strix or AREZ aftermarket vega 56. I used one for about a year before getting the sapphire nitro vega 64 and 3 game deal. The ASUS cooler was very noisy and very hot. Note I was not in an airflow focused case, but neither are most cases. VRM's regularly went above 100C, the highest I saw was 112C. Hotspot temperatures were almost always 20C higher than the core temperature. Combine this heat with the high pitched fans running at high speed and it was insanity, I could hear it through my headset. So I opened the card to try replacing the thermal paste and found the VRM pad did not completely cover the mosfets, it wasn't cut straight and the placement only covered half the last mosfet facing the outside of the case. I bought a 3mm thick thermal grizzly minus pad which dropped vrm temp by almost 15C. But I never could fix the hot spot temperature, it only dropped a couple degrees after multiple applications and remountings. I have a friend who has an AREZ Vega 56 who is very happy with it, though.

      @@TheGoodOldGamer Chris, don't conflate core clocks with memory clocks. The only substantial things a Vega 64 BIOS will do to a Samsung HBM Vega 56 are increase the HBM voltage from 1.25V to 1.35V (actual voltage, not what wattman says), increase peak boost clocks (pstate 7 basically) from 1590mhz to 1630mhz, and increase the default power limit from 150W (75-225W from -50% to +50%) to 220W (110W-330W from -50% to +50%).
      Increasing memory clocks has absolutely no effect on power consumption, and bestows free performance as the Vega cards are absolutely starved for memory bandwidth, especially if you use higher resolutions. And with the Vega 64 BIOS, you can still cap it to ~150W at -30% (or -32% for more precision) power limit, and for 135W, just set it to -40% (or -39% for more precision). You're limited to a minimum of 110W instead of 75W, however, but 110W isn't that bad, especially if you can ramp up the HBM clocks to at least 1100mhz. And if you're into going slightly more nitty gritty, you can also grab AMD Memory Tweak and tighten the HBM timings even more. It's good stuff, really helped with me.
      By the way, in your video it says Wattman ignores the power targets you put in unlike MSI Afterburner. Do you, by any chance, use an HDMI cable to connect your card with your monitor? There's a little something that's bugging me I need to figure out, and I want to hear from your side too.

      @@TheGoodOldGamer, as Jon Smith stated, the hbm2 from Samsung benefits from that bios flashing, bicause of the voltage bump. The catch is that increasing the speed will switch to the next set of timings, nullifying the gains.
      With that program, ( I've never seen it myself also), there is possible to keep them tight again, at least in theory.
      So, with the increase in voltage from the 64 bios, the tightened timings and around 1100mhz with Samsung only ram, the performance gained is really important.
      Faster core clock+power consumption is not that relevant anyway, bicause of the very same issue, ram speed/latency, (not the total bandwidth).
      Also, for my model, Gigabyte gaming Oc, which runs flawlessly by the way, I don't know yet, if it is possible to upgrade the bios to the 64 version. Now that I've seen this possibly to change the timings, I'll look into it more interested.

      You don't need to bother with Core Clocks, really. Just set the max voltage to 1V and see what's the highest core clock you can achieve with that voltage; if it's stable at stock clocks without messing around, you're golden. For power limit, feel free to leave it to 0% but you can experiment, as it just governs how much power your Vega can consume, the default 0% setting allowing for a max of 220W (it really won't consume more at 1V tbh). And AMD Memory Tweak is a standalone program developed originally for mining which allows you to tweak the timings of your Vega's HBM2 the same way you can tweak your RAM in the BIOS settings; it should be used together with Wattman to eke out every ounce of performance from your HBM2 after you've settled on a stable memory frequency.

      And with an undervolted aib model, it can have 95% the performance of a 1080

    We are at a point where new cands are great but too expansive. I hope no one buys new cards so we can get back to normal prices next gen. Depending of you bugged, get the 580, vega56 mod it and get 64 performance or on the high end 1080ti.. that under 400 is a steal imo.

    Just a heads up Vega 64 bios flash only works on 56 reference cars that are part of the early batch. Later Vega 56 reference didnt run samsung hbm. Non reference vega 56 none run samsung hbm so a Vega 64 bios flash will not work.

      My Vega 56 Pulse have Samsung memory. I doesn't really matter anyway because I can't flash a Vega 64 bios on it with ATI Flash. I've read you could force the flash trough cmd but I'm not willing to try that.

  • @baalrog666
    @baalrog666 4 года назад

    Obviously this will not be the case for all V56's, especially the reference models, but I have a Sapphire Pulse one, so it can easily do 1550 (1590 set as p7) mhz on the core clock at decent noise levels, undervolted to 1030mv. It also has samsung hbm2 memory, before I flashed a V64 bios memory could be oc'ed from 800 to 940 mhz, with the V64 bios it can do 1100 in most games but I left it at 1060 since a couple of games were more senstitive to it and crashed, so a huge memory oc. And with these settings it does significantly better than the numbers in the video at 1440p, I'd say I got about 20% better numbers, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider I actually used Radeon Chill since fps was going above my 75 hz refresh rate, but I was basically getting the 1080p framerates from the video but at 1440p.

      Yes, I used to have the same model. P7 set @ 1652MHz + 1080mv.
      Memory set to 950Mhz, but with a V56 bios. It performed far better than the stock blower version and was quiet and cool.

    Well.. everyone complains of the cooler, BUT it isn't any worse than your regular Nvidia reference cooler, it's just the temperature target which is a bit optimistic, after all nvidia reference gpus ran @84c. Of course if you want to keep it under 75c it will be loud AF...

    I am just gonna wait for the Polaris replacement Navi card that is most likely coming this year or early next year RX 570 is starting to fall a bit probably has 1 more year in it for max settings and RX 580 I’d say probably will last till early 2021 of course this is just speculation I feel Navi is gonna age A LOT better tho.
