I think comps and weapon lights go hand in hand. If you’re going to put something like a TLR1HL or X300 on an MR920/G19 size handgun and end up with the light extending the OAL, might as well add a comp since the length is already there. Add a red dot to the package, and it’s conceptually a Roland special. Try going from a bare pistol to one with both a light and comp. The extra weight at the muzzle end plus the comp effect work in conjunction to really minimize muzzle rise.

Great confirmation of similar findings we had with different size Wilsons that were ported vs not. Also similar findings for NHC Bob Marvel in 10mm which felt and shot like a 9mm when ported vs not. The bigger the gun and caliber, the more the ports reduced muzzle rise. These were all measured with the MantisX recoilmeter so we had both qualitative and quantitative results. Thanks for this well done!

PSA has made a micro dagger slide called the MC-1 that integrates a comp into the 48 slide with a 43x barrel. I have put 1200 rounds through it so far and I love it in comparison to a stock 48 slide and barrel.

I have the comp for MR920. And you are absolutely correct on the grip issue. I used the same grip with the comp and notice a big difference
Also C&G makes a great holster for the shadow systems with the comp because they all have open bottoms and are extended a little bit. So the comp doesn’t stick out the end and is fully covered. They also make some holsters for some hard to find models like, CZ. There are priced at about $80. I carry OWB so the comp on the MR920 doesn’t bother me.

The nice thing about a comp, is that the more powerful the load, the more effect the comp has. It makes the recoil of your expensive, high-powered defensive loads feel more like the cheap, target loads most people take to the range.

I work private security snd trying to find a level 3 holster that fits a comp was difficult to say the least, my preference is Safariland. I also prefer full size pistols. Enter the M&P 2.0 5 inch Performance center. Fits readily available safariland holsters, i snagged an ALS for edc and an ALS/SLS for duty, ported for some recoil mitigation. Also may snag the 4.25 inch performance center for EDC.

  • @Taidaan

Consider the noise difference with a compensator or ported barrel as well. The dB level won't change, but where the sound goes matters. I shot a P365 and P365 SAS back-to-back at an indoor range. Through 2 layers of hearing protection, the sound increase was substantial. The benefits of the porting didn't outweigh the con of possibly-disorienting levels of sound if it had to be used indoors, at least for me and the SAS's owner.

I have done some testing on coms and they CAN effect reliability so before just throwing it on and sending it you want to make sure it is going to run clean. Similar to the video I have noticed a reduction in muzzle rise that is noticeable, but not huge. Holsters can be a pain. Bullet velocities and therefor penetration/expansion seem un-effected in my tests. Also comps make it a little harder to fieldstrip and clean your firearm. Over all I like them, but you have to try it out and see.

Comps are nice but I see them as range toys on certain pistols. I currently only have one on my G17 build. It's extremely picky with ammo. Reliability is the biggest issue with that one. It will always go bang though...as long as it successfully loads a round. I wouldn't tell people not to get a comp, but I'd definitely recommend they test as many ammo brands and types as they can to see what the thing runs well and what it does not.

  • @ben41281
    @ben41281 9 месяцев назад +1

Like everything else. If your fundamentals are good the comp will simply enhance your shooting. But, if you let the fundamentals falter, it's a bandaid on your bad habits. Same could be said for just about every do-dad that we can hang onto a firearm.
Me personally I'm currently putting together a Sig P320 with a comp for a range/competition oriented set up. However the fire control unit I'm using is the one in my P320 compact, and I will be retaining all the original parts, so if I wish to go back to stock condition, I can.

My T.Rex Ranga...whatever it's called holster can take threaded or comp on my DR920 Elite. Just added the comp this week but have yet to shoot it. Obviously it's one of my OWB guns due to it's size so not worried about IWB appendix fit. It does add 1/4"+ to OAL of the gun from threaded like the CR920 and MR920 but T. Rex is open bottom and threaded didn't protrude but comp does

John, I just put 200rnds thru my new CR920P War Poet. 1st, beautiful pistol (admittedly, I'm a Shadow Systems fan...they've addressed all my issues w/ Glock); 2nd, she shoots & handles NICE! Although I have 3 other Shadows, this is my first War Poet. The trigger on this pistol is INCREDIBLE!!! Even better than my MR Elite. I only had 1 malfunction (during break-in), right around 100rnd mark. I threw in a box of my duty HP ammo (Fed HST 124grn). Ist HP mag inserted & would NOT feed the 1st round correctly (locked right up on the nose of the bullet, against the feed ramp). Couldn't tap that puppy in (tapping rear slide multiple times). Forced to Type 2 clear the pistol. W/ that 1st round now cleared/stripped (Factory Extended mag), I loaded & shot the remaining 12rnds just fine. Loaded it up the same way again, HP's, & ran fine. In all, 200rnds 123grn NATO Ball & 50rnds 124grn HST & all ran well minus the aforementioned one hiccup (yes, did place said mentioned round back into a mag somewhere w/o further issue). I'm probs going another 200rnds of mixed ammo before replacing my Glock 48 as fair-weather EDC. CR920P fits in all my G48 holsters, grip prints less than my 48 (Appendix), Comp does make a positive difference. This is my 1st Comp pistol, I actually expected more of a difference but it is noticeable.
I'll mention, ref. Shadow Syst QC/Service. I had my 1st catastrophic ammo event in 38yrs of shooting (about 2 months ago). Factory ball (I only shoot Factory ammo in my pistols; revolvers, different story), I had a major case blow-out at about 1200rnd point in my MR920 Elite. That pistol surely saved my hands (stinging like heck!) but alas resulted in a cracked frame. Rare, Factory ammo issue (BUT in my mind solely falls on the ammo manufacturer!!!). Shadow took care of my pistol; checked it out, new frame & internals, without an issue (short turn around as well). THANK YOU SHADOW! Thus another reason why this new War Poet now makes 4, w/ more to come.
Thanks for a sweet little pistol Shadow & John. $50 difference at LGS...EXTREMELY PLEASED!

You mentioned brands of ammunition, but I didn't hear anything about bullet weight, subsonic, or +P ammunition. Comps work best with higher pressure ammunition, which is where they're really needed versus range blaster 115gr stuff you used to be able to buy at Walmart.

Yeah, pushing some hot +P+ outta my Comped G17 will get her working nicely. I swear the thing will shoot flatter with some 115gr +P+ Underwood Ammo than it does shooting some standard pressure 115gr Gold Dots because of how much gas is being moved through the ports with the hotter Underwood Ammo.

I would think out of a 9 mm the difference isn't worth it if you got it for conceal. For a 10mm the comp would be a great option even if your attempting to conceal as a 10 mm is already going to be a thinker gun 1.2" the least I've seen (my xdm elite) whereas a hellcat and a Masada 9s are 1" thick.

I’ve just recently picked up the CR 920 without the comp and I don’t see a reason to carry a comp. Now I’ve shot my comped Glock in a more then a few drills and when then comp is facing up in an up close scenario you feel that blast coming up so just something to be aware of when training to cant that comp away from you. Great vid sir.

Comps are great for shooting faster and more accurate at the range. The issue for carry comes in when you may not have the opportunity to fully extend your firearm. You may find yourself getting hit with hit gasses and possibly metal fragments. You also don't get any additional fps for the added length of the barrel. Honestly, adding a nice heavy light under the barrel and that will also help with muzzle rise. Just my .02
    Rakkasans!

Been banging steel a lot lately with FN 509 tactical with a compensator. Alone, it doesnt feel different than shooting a 9m without comp. But the results are better for ME with a comp

John I have the ramjet after burner comp from Radian .
I honestly believe if you are shooting +P ammo the comp is definitely beneficial.
Standard ammo, not so much ..
on top of that the ramjet is a complete barrel , and the feed ramp sucks with hollow points…
Just stating the facts …. Thanks

I have a competition dual port comp from PMM on a 509T for my CC and it makes a huge difference, also depends what grain ammo you are shooting. Some don't help much for 115gr maybe 20% but for 147gr 50%+ reduction.

Any thoughts on comps in relation to fighting up close, in terms of helping reduce stoppages due to slides getting caught up in clothing? A bit like longer weapon lights?
It's a non-issue for me, living in the UK, I just find it an interesting thought experiment.

I would like to add yet another consideration: in a place with a good chance of the shooting starting while you are sitting in your car (like my country, Brazil, with around 30 to 40% of shootings happening this way)... Well, just imagine you sitting at the driver's seat and having to shoot through your window. Most of you, like me, have trained for that. But how many of us have trained for that with a compensator, and all that hot gas and residues flying right at our eyes, without glasses or another protection?

This is why I wouldn’t ever put one on my carry gun. Competition gun, sure. Not a gun I’m carrying as a self defense object.

I believe the gases and debris is less of a factor in comparison to a ported barrel. There’s plenty of footage showing people sitting from retention with a comp on an it not being such a factor

It will be louder for sure. How much not sure I run a macro. Everyone that shoots it says it’s a bit louder but really not much. Also haven’t had any issues even shooting from retention.

IMO glass from the window is going to be more of a concern. I do have a S&W J frame factory comp in .327 federal magnum and it does spit (hot gasses/burning powder) so there is that.

I carry a CR920P and it’s not gassy at all. Besides I wear prescription glasses and train in them so it wouldn’t matter either way. And if you’re concern is training for a situation, I doubt you’ve shot through a windshield with or without a comp and the glass shattering and shit is gonna be a much bigger problem than a little extra gas

I'm not a compensator guy. But from what I hear, size matters. 🤪
Seriously though, I think a compensator on a match gun makes perfect sense.
It definitely hurts concealibility for a carry gun. But as you guys show, it's a more accurate gun, or at least has less recoil.
Nice camera work on the muzzle rise comparisons. Especially the colored lines and then the shadow overlays of each gun. Very nice.

One major flaw with comps not mentioned is that they often have the set screws walk out with blue loctite and you can’t use red if you want to remove it to clean the barrel.
When the screws loosen and the comp starts to rotate the rod gets hung up on it and the gun malfunctions - sometimes in a way that is changing to sort out.
I see this problem often at the range from casual shooters bragging about their awesome comp when they arrive and asking for help by the end of their session.
Having something permanently affixed like on the Staccato XC is fine but I’d never put one temporarily affixed on a self defense weapon.

Only potential missed consideration I could think of is when stripping and cleaning the guns. If you want to fully break it down, the comp can be a pain in the butt.

One of the ways I look at it with low light is in a civilian context odds are you’re gonna flip on a light of some kind just so you don’t end up in as much legal hot water. So as a result you’ll have a bigger thing giving you away than the flash from your comp

  • @jimmeyers8960

Sure. Muzzle rise is less with a comp. But if we hold accuracy constant, how much does a comp reduce split times? I'd argue for defensive use, not enough to matter. Competition? Sure. But ActiveSelfProtection channel has hundreds of videos where draw time to first shot, for example, is much more important.

Hey tell your boys from Shadow Systems to make a CR920 with a longer grip like a G43x but with 15 rounds , that one with the plus 3 extension and a comp would be great.
