No professional here but these steps helped me: - Spray all bolts that need removing with Seafoam Deep Creep or some type of penetrating oil and let sit for at least 12hrs!! - Loosen up the top 3 bolts before trying to remove the 2 large bolts below on the strut with a rubber mallet! This helped me tremendously, hope it helps you all!
Just ordered TQL struts for my 2014 Kia optima from you guys. They were priced well and the reviews seemed good. Hopefully they ride well. I'll find out on Wednesday
At 04:55 in the video, the mechanic suggests using a vice grip on the sway bar link bolt connecting to the strut. This is wrong! The sway bar link bolt has a hex or allen wrench design so you can keep the bolt from turning while loosening the nut. Otherwise, you will likely damage the rubber boot covering the sway bar bolt boot and need to replace the sway bar connector completely. If your intention is to replace the sway bar link, then, feel free to use the vice grips. Otherwise, do yourself a solid and use penetrating oil on the bolt/nut, let it sit for a few minutes and then either use an allen wrench and end wrench combination or better yet, an impact wrench. The impact wrench will spin the nut right off without even using the allen wrench. I have done a number of these on different vehicles and have never used a vice grip on the bolt.
Most likely everyone will strip those hex heads out. If you use vice grips use the narrow straight shaft ones. You can avoid the boot. Use an impact and it'll be off quick.
If you are doing this repair say in Ohio then yes you will need vice grips because the Allen wrench holes will be corroded from the salt used on the roads in states like Ohio / the rust belt states and no Allen wrench can fit if the hole is rusted out Hench the need for vice grips.
You guys seem like the perfect person to ask this question. I have a 1994 Ford Aspire and they say they no longer make the springs for the struts for my vehicle anymore.... I was wondering if there was something I could do to maybe replace the whole assembly with a different but similar strut assembly??? Maybe a few modifications made to mount them or something, but it is my only vehicle and my only hope of actually having one because I am just a traveler with not much of anything except that vehicle. If anyone could help me find a strut assembly to fit my 1994 ford aspire I would be forever grateful to you!!
You make it look easy. I am having an issue with mine. The strut bolt holes are not lining up with the assembly hole. The assembly holes are too high and the control arm won't lower. Seems as though the new axle is playing a roll in this as I just cant get it line up. It keeps pushing the holes away from each other. Physically exhausting. Any suggestions I can try?
What do you recommend if the CV is stuck in a downward position? I was not able to push the knuckle up into the strut as easily as you. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I bought struts and when I went to install them the bracket for the two big bolts at the bottom was facing a little to the right. Do I have the wrong parts? It was a real pain needing to remove the brake caliper so I could get an impact on those botls, and them I had to reinstall the old parts just to get back on the road. Is the strut bracket at the bottom able to turn so you can install the knuckle and bolts??
Is there a special way to set the bottom bolts on a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am SE1? I just bought the front struts and don't want to do it wrong. I think theres a camber bolt on these.
Hi ! My Name is Mr.Herman Woods , how are you today.I wonted to know , i have a 1981 dodge colt 1.6 w AC .How can you tell what size strut cartridge .fits your strut .And if you guys carry it .can you let me know .thank you for your time.Mr.H.Woods .
I own a 2008 Avalon Limited. If I replace the front with quick struts, is it absolutely necessary to get the car aligned after every pair of quick struts installed?
+Cecil Hedgepeth Thank you for checking us out! Yes, if you are planning on just replacing the strut mount, you will need to decompress the spring to swap that over. Local part stores may have a decompression tool you can rent rather than purchasing one.
Hi do you have in stock complete asembly struts for 2000 nissan sentra gxe 1.8?????? (do you recommend Unity suspension)or which you can recommend thank u
I just removed my struts on my Saturn Ion Redline last night, and reinstalled the way he did in the video. My front end popped like mad...and was pulling BAD to the left. So I lifted the car back up, loosened everything back up, and supported the knuckle with my jack and lifted it to compress the strut, as if it were sitting on the ground and then tightened everything up. Popping completely went away, as well as the pulling to the left. So I'd say yes, you should support or compress the strut into place before tightening.
+clyde reagin We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. Buy this part for your vehicle on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
KYB. And I can get them for cheaper than monroe. Monroe is not better, actually the same as these TRQ. Chinese for the basic. I had both and both went out over a couple of months. Same ride and corning in both, which is sloppy at best.
So, what's the procedure for replacing the front struts on a 78 Celica? I know how to take it out of the car, compress the spring and such, but unless my new parts, and every other listing I found for the front struts are wrong. The new struts look like a shock absorber, not struts. There's no perch for the bottom of the spring to rest on. The best I can tell, the new struts slide into the old housing? I have not tried to just do it yet, anyone know what the heck I'm talking about?
If you live in Arizona you may get the strut bolts out that easy BUT up in the northeast they can be a real bear!! You should have shown a tougher R & R!
My Camaro makes a clunking sounds when i make right turns. Could it be I have bad struts ? I got the mounts replaced but didnt fix it. The top cap does have about .300 gap and when i turn the wheel the cap tilts one way is that normal?
+David Diaz We're not sure without seeing the vehicle, as there could be many reasons. A good start would be to check the swaybar links and bushings for play.
I was going to replace the sway bar bushing a few days ago but as I was doing an oil change I noticed the muffler had play so i gave it a hard tug and it made the exact same clunk sound. It ended up being that the catalytic converter hits my car floor.
Great vid. One question. Why didnt you put weight on the shock strut before torquing the down? You torqued the bolts down with everything hanging. Why?
Bilstein recommends any connection involving rubber to metal contact is torqued after the vehicle is dropped (prevents "torque" to soft parts). However, any metal to metal parts (brackets, braces, etc) should be torqued while suspended. Trying to figure out whether sway bar links and the center strut nut should be torqued with or without weight. Any professional installers on here?
And the shop wants to charge me $300+ just for installation. That doesn't even include the new part price! Is it still practical to replace this part with a floor jack instead?
I don't get why no suspension video advises to lift the suspension to simulate car weight tension...it seems so obvious to me and especially around bushings, if you cannot do it while on the ground, it's pretty clear that you gotta at least push up on them tge right amount...

+C Pat You may need to use a pry bar to wedge it out or you can use a axle popper.
Your cv came out of its socket. Twist and push until it reseats
You can stick a allen wrench into the center of that sway bar nut. That way you don't destroy the rubber boot.

@@1AAuto have you gotten around to that video yet? They are some of the single most complex struts I've ever seen
Are you supposed to support the suspension before you tighten bolts, after installing the new strut/shock?
I just removed my struts on my Saturn Ion Redline last night, and reinstalled the way he did in the video. My front end popped like mad...and was pulling BAD to the left. So I lifted the car back up, loosened everything back up, and supported the knuckle with my jack and lifted it to compress the strut, as if it were sitting on the ground and then tightened everything up. Popping completely went away, as well as the pulling to the left. So I'd say yes, you should support or compress the strut into place before tightening.
