I still have a 9.7” iPad Pro, and I’ve been eyeballing all this new iPad Pro stuff. I really like your unbiased reviews. I hope Apple is pushing to make iPad OS even more it’s “own thing” because the trappings of iOS are limiting its potential. It has the power, but Apple needs to decide whether they want to have it be different for different’s sake, or create a true tablet / laptop style experience that’s cohesive.
Appreciating a feature in one product doesn't mean that he is against what he said about another product not having something as widely used as a touchscreen.
Makes total sense right? In general touch is a lot less efficient, but 'in general' doesn't mean 'always'. When I used to have a touch screen laptop I would only touch the screen around... 10 to 20 times per workday compared to the thousands of times I would use the touchpad... but those 10 to 20 times per workday were nice and saved me effort (explanation for those who can't imagine that: when you're typing something you will often lose track of where the cursor is, so 'finding it' often starts which a quick shaking movement before clicking what you want to click. With a touchscreen you get to skip this extra step, but have to pay with a greater physical movement of your hand (not too bad on small laptops). Or alternatively you are watching a video and want to select something from the recommended videos in which case you have to move your hands anyway).
I just sold my 2019 MacBook Bro for the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard set up and its amazing. I can go from working on project drafts with my pencil, taking notes and cresting mockups. Switch up with my Keyboard and draft captions in my notes, edit content and upload them to all my social media platforms, all on the same device. It’s the sort of flexibility and simplicity you just don’t get with a Mac or a Laptop.
I cannot understand Apple fanboys. Why do they trade a MacBook for a Tablet?? Sell your iPad Pro and just buy a workstation and a drawing tablet for the computer.
Aaron Goodchild It works pretty well, you can remap basic functions to it (you can have upto 5 programmed buttons) like home, app switcher, show dock, etc. but it comes at the cost of having to leave accessibility touch on as remapping is an ‘accessibility’ feature. You may have to get used to a couple things though, one of them being the ‘adaptive cursor’ or whatever Apple calles it. It basically means it takes shape to whatever the cursor is hovering on, it would regularly be a circle (annoyingly), but once you hover on something clickable on a supported app, the cursor takes shape around the button. On some apps it works really well because those apps are meant for a mouse. But on all other apps a mouse just emulates a finger press (by default). If you want to try an app that works really well with mouse (and keyboard), use Safari. If you plan on using your iPad with a mouse but without a keyboard be aware that on my Logitech MX master 2 (I doubt that changes anything) there’s an issue where when I click on a text field the software keyboard does not pop up until I turn off or disconnect my mouse. So whenever you use your mouse with your iPad always have a keyboard with you (if this is a widespread issue). This drove me to buy a magic keyboard so that the issue would be less annoying. Using a keyboard and a mouse feels mostly natural when web browsing and checking through emails and word processing but for other mobile only apps that are meant for a touch screen it feels weird. All of your regular keyboard shortcuts work (command c, command v, command z, etc.) and to see what shortcuts are available on each app you can just hold down the command/windows button (shortcuts only show up if the app is supported and all the modifying keys are remappable). One more thing (classic Apple fashion), if you do use a keyboard the first thing you need to do is disable auto correct. Sorry for the long reply, but I hope this helps. All remaps and customizability (yes, you can costumize your cursor) have to be done within settings.
Honestly, I got hooked on the iPad Pro 1st gen while in college. Nothing beat it for taking notes w/the pencil. The ability to type things up when I needed to (I type faster than I write) and hand write notes (Organic Chem, Math, Chem Eng shit) was amazing. I went from hardly taking any notes in various notebooks to having hundreds of notes and HW assignments per semester. To be fair I still lugged around a laptop everyday for things like MATLAB and research stuff. And yes, I did regret getting the 6.8lb 17” Razer blade pro w/gtx 1080.
I think due to thermal reasons. It would get too hot without proper ventilation. And including proper ventilation would make it thick and bulky, the opposite of what Apple wanted to do.
I literally cant live without it now. When I am using an iPad without a trackpad, I always miss it. I have my one with a trackpad in bed and the laziness factor its allowed me to achieve is so good, I can do everything with as tiny amount of effort possible.
It’s a simple A/B test that can be set up with TubeBuddy. You generate 2-3 titles, show it to different random groups of people and see which one gets the most clicks. Once you have a winner version, you release it to all the users.
3 years later and im now using my iPad Pro/Magic Keyboard as a full on laptop replacement. The only thing I even use my macbook for at this point is to run Ableton, and the computer stays docked and hooked up to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse 100% of the time now.
I think he was talking about lifting the display so it can open, not completely opening it, because, were that the case the hinge would be so flimsy that it couldn't stand up as firmly
@@maleknecibi Is the 13 the only one like that? My XPS 15 is not a 2 in 1, and to open it I still need two hands to pry it apart like closed up clam. The only laptop I have owned that can actually be opened all the way with one hand is my MBP.
I had a 10th gen iPad ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
I enjoy the Magic Keyboard with my big M1 powered iPad Pro; however, it would be excellent if Apple would give an update to allow for disabling the trackpad while typing. Other than that, it’s awesome. As a writer, I often hit the trackpad while typing, and this throws typing off track. Please Apple gives us the ability to disable the track pad while typing. There’s just no reason for it to be enabled at the same time a person is typing.
I started my RUclips channel with my iPad Pro 2018, I film everything with the ipad, use its mics, then edit the footage with lumafusion and make the thumbnails on the iPad. its not perfect, I want to get a camera, but until I can afford all the other gear, the iPad allows me to actually create things, and I love it. I honestly think its one of the best tools than a creator trying to get a start could have. it sounds kinda crazy but if I could get a bigger iPad like a 14" 15" I totally would, when video editing you always need more screen real estate. great review!!
I like how they switch their new intro between dark mode and light mode 😎 I'm from Malaysia, it's 2am in the morning when you post this video, I watch the video in the dark. 😆
Hey2, fellow Malaysian! I actually have not been on RUclips much recently & just realized the new cool intro. Loving the dark mode too #DarkModeEverything
Actually that’s probably because it’s actually an OLED model. OLED devices actually make screensaver content like logos or clocks switch locations every minute or so to actually prevent OLED burn-in. It’s actually a pretty normal thing.
@@zero64 Sure, but it didnt just change location, it changed size. We all know what happened, it was connected to an external display with a different scaling ratio, and it bugged out because it applied the same scaling ratio to a display with a higher pixel density. It bugged out.

@Iqbal Muhammad lol, yes. My first thought when I saw the new iPads last year was that this plus foldables is a perfect storm for them to recreate Steve Jobs legendary iPhone announcement. "Today we're announcing a new smartphone, a new tablet, and a new desktop computer. And it's in my pocket." That's my full prediction lol
I feel like this is the fairest you’ve ever been on an apple product! I love your videos. I just watched to say once Apple released 13.4 and the keyboard I have not used my laptop really at all! The main reason I love how my iPad Pro gets up and going with in 2 seconds. I feel like I’m waiting forever to use my MacBook Pro when I get it out! I have a pretty good MacBook Pro too but for somebody who doesn’t work all day on their computer. I love that I can just grab my iPad open it it’s immediately accessible to everything and I just use it for a view seconds. The only big things to say is a downside is that the iPad pros are expensive and I don’t see them lasting as long as MacBook do In the long run. Just some thoughts. Love your videos.
The iPad has become a great companion to my MacBook and I honestly don't know how I was dealing with just my laptop alone. The way Apple has evolved the iPad really amazes me
I was pretty surprised to see that a lot of people in my college are using a tablet with a pretty cheap keyboard case from Amazon and they say it isn’t the most powerful setup but absolutely enough for their studying purposes. Also this setup is generally speaking, less expensive compared to a Laptop
when i was looking for a "laptop" that i could carry with me all the time without the bulk of a traditional laptop my first thought was ipad pro. my friend wanted me to get a surface pro, being im a pc and android guy. but for some reason the ipad pro screamed my name. it was a cool "premium" product that i just couldnt get out of my mind. i then got myself a 12.9 2017 ipad pro. it was great for what i needed it for. i wanted something i could do light tasks on other than my phone. netflix, youtube basically any app and have some fun with maybe some mobile gaming and drawing if i saw fit. paired with the first gen apple pencil it was amazing. i now have a 10.9 2019 ipad pro in 512gb and i need this magic keyboard. its everything i ever dreamed of. im not an apple fan by any means, hell i havent had an iphone since the 4s. but there is something about the ipad pro. can it run native apps and all that jazz? no. can you use it for everyday tasks and even more? absolutely! i guess thats what makes it so great. apple did something good for once lmao.
As a student it was a great device to take notes. However, once I started going into programming I stopped using it. The main reason is having no way to compile code on the iPad itself. Sure you can remote to cloud to do it(I tried it with blink) or go to website to do it but both were clunky way especially when it came to big projects. So no it not for someone who plans to use it as their main “computer” for programming
As a designer the iPad Pro is a great addition to my workflow, but not a replacement for a laptop. I see it more as a great way to optimize the early stages of the process, i.e research, sketching, color combinations etc. its also a great device to do smaller presentation for one on one meetings with clients. The screen looks great and I find it easier for clients to touch the screen to scroll around on a website, or a PDF then using a trackpad. With the Apple Pencil, I've been able to make final designs that goes for a "hand-drawn" look, skipping the tedious work of vectorizing things drawn of paper.
I was skeptical, but I like the magic keyboard more than I thought I would. It’s super sturdy and it travels well. I feel like my iPad is protected without having to stick in into another protective case. I like like that I can use it on my lap. Easy on a plane. It’s expensive, buy I’m glad I got it. I do miss the function keys, though. Then, I remember it’s an iPad, not a laptop.
I think the clear message hear is that this device is awesome for people who already love iPads and hate money, but terrible for people who like money and have never used anything but pc/android devices. Apple is just making their iPad ->iPaddier
True except the last point. While the earlier renditions were about making the iPad a *better iPad* , (How does a keyboard case with a trackpad makes the iPad a better iPad) this keyboard is truly Apple's take on the laptop and 2 in 1 market at least in the hardware, I would argue the build quality and the overall form factor, this kind of a take in the 2 in 1 category is the best. The only think keeping the iPad behind is the OS. If it ran macOS Big Sur, it will be the best 2 in 1, period.
Just to add to all the features of the ipad: i am very pleased with it, the only thing no one thought about jet ist that it is impossible to look at two different excel, PowerPoint or word files at the same time and using the depending apps for the files. Little but sometimes annoying downgrade.
Linus could make a single video with 999 sponsors segments, I don't think I wouldn't care very much if the transition between the content and the sponsor is as smooth as it usually is.
Hands down...the only reason I bought my old iPad Pro and will buy the newest one is for the art capabilities. I’ve drawn on EVERYTHING you can imagine and by far iPad for me is the best for my art. I know it’s a downgrade in the tech department if we’re looking at it like a 1000$+ laptop but as the greatest digital drawing pad with the option to now add a keyboard and mouse pad? Holy shit am I sold
Hey guys! I’m the proud owner of a iPad Pro for almost a year now. I have a few questions for you smarter people out there! Ive been using a laptop for school for most of my schooling career as well as just standard desktops. Ive had my own personal laptop for around 8 years obviously changing laptops overtime. Ive never had a cheap laptop but never best of the best per say. So my question is as follows: what exactly cant i do with a iPad Pro that i can do with the laptop? Considering that i have all the proper attachments for my iPad such as magic keyboard and external hard rivers etc. i have not came across an issue with my iPad yet that i just absolutely needed to use a computer... other than typing long essays and things before i had a keyboard for my iPad... i can take notes as well with significant more ease and perfection to harness the way i want to learn with this iPad as opposed to mindless typing on my old laptop i am now engaged on a much higher level.
Quite a few things in my world, but not necessarily traditional things the majority of the world cares about. I'm a technologist, software developer, musician, gamer. I enjoy being able to record, mix, master music.... Play competitive fps games.... Spin up virtual machines and containers to build out programming environments... And I dabble with visual effects design in after effects and Photoshop. Every thing in this realm on a tablet is a heavily downgraded (and mostly non-existent) experience. However, that's totally not the things this is marketed towards nor designed for. I think the iPad pro is a great tool for a variety of things, however the price point seems a little steep when you compare what you can do with a laptop spec'd out for the same price. I think the difference here is workflow. If I were a business executive or an entrepreneur for a company though, this is 100% what I'd use
Different approaches: Surface is taking a laptop and turning it into a tablet, iPad is taking a tablet and turning it into a laptop. They will eventually meet in the middle and one of them might become a decent new category of device eventually
People do programming homework, essay, photoshop, FaceTime, doodling and game on this combo.....you can put it together and tear it down..somehow I m convinced it’s good
Just got my 12.9” Magic Keyboard a couple of days ago. It’s a great piece of kit and the keyboard is superb. Got mine as a business expense - wouldn’t buy it with my own money unless it’s intended to be my only device (not in my case). I totally agree with the review - it allows you to use the iPad as an ‘almost’ laptop with touch/pencil capability. However it still can’t totally replace my Windows laptop (wish it could!) as I can’t use some of the software I need on iPad OS and where I can it isn’t as efficient yet. This is partly down to the operating system and partly down to the hardware keyboard - it’s great for typing but missing function keys etc. Just makes it awkward for some uses. However for quite a lot of users this may be all they need - it’s definitely a big step towards a true hybrid device but I still think it will be 2 or 3 more iterations before I can ditch my Windows laptop.
Having used an iPad with a Magic Keyboard case for school for 2 years, I can safely say it's a very good competitor to a laptop. My only issue with it is it doesn't always work well. From time to time I end up having to take it off and putting back on the case. Also, the trackpad is plastic, not glass.
Yeah I love my iPad Pro, it’s my main college machine. The keyboard improved my essay typing soooo much it’s awesome Edit October 2022: I still have my 12.9” iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard working like a champ. I also purchased a MacBook Air a little over a year ago. I continue to use my iPad as my main college device as its OS suits my uses and needs more. I use my MacBook for the times my iPad can’t do something, but it’s rare

Thanks this is super helpful, thinking of doing the same. Have you connected a mouse to it, if so how is your experience with it?

Still don't see how this can compete with the surface pro

Sam J preference. There are pros and cons of each.
@Ther Ther how so?
Different approaches: Surface is taking a laptop and turning it into a tablet, iPad is taking a tablet and turning it into a laptop. They will eventually meet in the middle and one of them might become a decent new category of device eventually
People do programming homework, essay, photoshop, FaceTime, doodling and game on this combo.....you can put it together and tear it down..somehow I m convinced it’s good
Programming? How? It doesn't allow interpreters or compilers. You gonna remote desktop into a real machine to do it?...why?
