This song is about an orphan's wedding. In short, this is a conversation between the bride and the river, which takes care of her on behalf of her mother, or, perhaps, with the spirit of her gone mother - on the banks of the river (the ancient Slavs, as well as the ancient Greeks or Egyptians, believed that the river symbolized the border of two worlds, the world of the living and the world of the dead, or a road from one world to another). The girl says that the groom is rich and the celebration is great, but you shouldn't believe the abundance of guests, fun and smiles. Something remains unspoken, this marriage seems to be at odds with the bride's heart. The ending of the entire scene stays uncertain, but the fact that the heroine is sailing in a boat down the river indicates that she decides to go to her mother. The song itself is very uneasy to perform. Earlier renditions (dated back to 1970-80-ies) were not so convincing. Diana's interpretation is absoltely epic, full of life, sense and emotion. The other special thing, saying nothing about the voice itself, is how delicately Diana uses yodeling (to express the crying) which is not so common for Russian folk tradition (and more associated with Switzerland and South Germany). Folklore is a very conservative genre, actually it consists of rules and patterns which have to be kept without a change... So this performance is not only a real drama with a touch of mysticism, ancient history and psychology, but also an incredible waterfall of very bold and complex music elements. Diana shows herself as very professional inter-human (inter-cultural & inter-epoch) intermediary.
Hi! This is an old Russian song of the wedding ceremony. The modern arrangement led you astray at first. A young girl is sitting by the river on the eve of the wedding. There are a lot of horses in the yard and a lot of guests in the house, but the girl cries that there is no one to bless her because she is an orphan.
Shes 15 here. A rare true contralto. An orphan from horrible circumstances that relearned to speak through singing. Her version of Wicked Game and Human to get the fullness of her rich lower register
Hello MrLboyd, thank you for your reaction to "Divine Diana Diva" as I like to call her. As a singer and performer she is a very versatile artist. Here you have just witnessed to a "Masterpiece of Art for all Time" in terms of performance and production. Watching different videos of her will surprise you very often, especially if you also watch appearances when Diana was younger and the later videos and performances after she finished her appearances on the show "You Are Super" in 2019. I am looking forward to more reactions to our "Queen of Goosebumps". All the best and greetings from Germany to Spain.
I support your efforts to expand your musical horizons. A few observations/questions. I understand from other RUclips reactors that there’s reasons for interrupting a performance, I just don’t think it’s optimal or very respectful to you or the artist, for a first viewing, especially. I’m also in favor of doing a little research on the performance or subject you’re reacting to: at least (try to) say their name and the title, context of the genre or region where it’s from/representing. I get that everybody’s exposure, history, acculturation, likes and dislikes, knowledge, etc. etc. are different, but isn’t the whole point of these types of reactions to meet at the common ground, the “watering hole “ of music, and to give each other the benefit of our different observations, insights, POV’s and experience? I liked that you noted that she’s a great performer. I could be wrong; the point could be to monetize the channel or to defend an ego from the attacks of the trolls and immature know it all’s. Whatever, anyway; this is Diana Ankudinova performing a traditional Russian folk song Rechenka ( Little River) on a Russian show like The Voice when she was 14 years old. I’m guessing that the reason you think it sounds Middle Eastern or north African is because of the musical and cultural cross pollination in Russia; orthodox Christian and looking towards Europe, but stretching across the whole of Asia with a large Muslim population as well. Russia borders half the Muslim world; Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan; and encompassed even more “Middle Eastern “ territory in prior history. The string instrument we hear there’s not a sitar (there’s no drone strings). I’m not sure what it is; there’s so many stringed instruments in the world that are unknown to me; it could be a balalaika. If you haven’t already, I recommend listening to Dimash Qudaibergan from Kazakhstan; he’s got the widest range and the best vocal control of any singer I’ve ever heard, and he’s trained in and performs classic opera as well as pop, contemporary and traditional music. Truly a one-of-a-kind artist. Everybody has to react to him, and it’s guaranteed to get views & likes. If you want to go farther afield in a different direction, though, check out Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe. Chiri Nani, Ngoma’ne Hosho , Kunze Kwadoka, Raki, Shanda, Kushiringinya…. I’ve never really run across a bad tune from him; he just does it for me. The collaborative/community vibe of African music is just really cool, I think. King Sunny Ade, the Bhundu Boys, Soul Brothers, music of the Cape Verde islands, Ali Farka Toure… Or sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar, or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, or the Hu Band doing Song of the Wolf Clan, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Adele, or the Four Seasons by Vivaldi… There’s many a world of soul to be encountered. Happy trails, man.
Welcome to the magical, mystical world of Princess Diana, The Goddess Voice of Nature. Enjoy your journey. She is a true Contralto. BTW, her first name is pronounced Deeaunna.
An excerpt from an article about wedding chants - "In the wedding ceremony, there were lamentations of an orphan bride addressed to her deceased parents. Here the ancient magical ideas of the Slavs about death are realized, who believed in the idea of immortality and the connection of the world of the living and the world of the dead, who are able to help each other. Lamentations were an integral part of a complex wedding complex and performed their ritual functions. Firstly, they conveyed the mood and condition of the bride, and secondly, they performed a ritual function, reflecting certain stages of the ceremony and the attitude of the participants to them. And thirdly, if the psychotherapeutic function, facilitating the severity of the transition of the bride to another gender and age group. The emotional state of the bride and the tragedy of the situation were revealed with the help of special poetic and linguistic means, as well as the general tone of lamentations. In general, wedding lamentations have preserved the ancient structure and functions, as well as poetic imagery and traditional motifs of lamentations."
@@osovagabundo1 This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. So the girl-orphan came to the river to tell the mother that she was being given away for the unloved, to a strange family, ask for blessings and cry.
