Per your "unlucky sailor" who lost his engine and so found himself stuck following this straight line comment, that is REALLY not how sea travel works AT ALL, which is precisely what would make this such a challenging, and in fact most likely impossible, route to actually pull off; between the water & the wind currents, it would actually take a massive effort and a very powerful, working engine to keep a ship on such a straight course, and in fact at some point along your journey, most likely around the tip of South America, you would almost certainly face conditions that forced you to to abandon your efforts to keep on a straight line and focus all your efforts on simply keeping yourself from capsizing.

Yep, you’re exactly right. Even with a calculated effort the straight line would be near impossible

How did you find this route? How sure are you that it is the longest? I saw something similar in which somebody showed there was a straight line between UK and New Zealand. It won't be as long as this, but it is arguably a more useful shipping route.

There is a good article on MIT Technology Review that explains it, it uses an algorithm. But yes you’re right, the Siberia to Pakistan shipping route probably isn’t that popular haha
