Robert Greene has profoundly changed the way I understand my own dark side and drive for power and also how to channel it into doing good, while not lying to myself about what it really is..still a drive for power. As a woman its a very challenging thing for people to accept because its viewed as a very masculine trait.. I find his work to be incredibly important on the path to self discovery both my own and other people’s motives. Acceptance of this fact almost exclusively has been the thing that has allowed me to first, break myself down and then to put myself back together differently.. Denying these parts of ourselves is extremely dangerous, but learning to live with both parts of ourselves the light and the darkness allows us to make different choices about how we move through the world..instead of manipulating situations to get what we want,we can learn to channel these parts of ourselves to help other people get what they need and that satiates my desire to go to war for the wrong reasons and instead use it for good.. Thank you Tom for engaging in conversations that aren’t always for the faint of heart..they are so necessary.

    • @117Industries
      @117Industries Год назад +1

Lol- it’s not a masculine trait. It’s a trait of the living!
Pseudo “men” are threatened by this life instinct in others. But some of us accept it as a necessary energy for living things to propagate themselves.
Edit: that being said, I do think men tend to be the sex who manifest this in the greatest abundance.

Notes about most useful ideas of the episode to me:
    Know thyself.
Deal with the world the way it is, not the way you wish it were.
Handling change has to do with emotions, not knowledge.
I will never understand myself completely and I have to operate from there.
Absolute power corrupts, but powerlessness corrupts even more.

One of the things that I found most frustrating in dealing with a destructive, narcissistic sociopath who was my supervisor was seeking help from a psychological source. He talked to me on the phone and had never met me or seen me. When I tried to explain the work behaviors of the sociopath, he told me that I was upset because I was really seeing myself in the mirror when I was viewing and dealing with the sociopath who took pleasure in destroying others' careers for no other reason than she could do it and she got her jollies from it. I was not and I am not a destructive personality who intentionally hurts others in contrast to those who are and can and do choose to do so not only without any remorse but with enjoyment. It still makes me angry that psychologists (and others) tell people they are sociopaths or psychopaths when they are faced with the career destruction from dealing with one!!!

Envy is a survival mechanism, and is how we learn and improve and derive motivation. Knowing you are envious and trying to tame it might not be such a good idea. Trying to go through life without making others envious can only mean you end up on the lowest of rungs, surely. I don't believe we can really make decisions different to those we are hard-wired to make... Not really anyway.

Agreed! Always great questions and deeper answers it’s insane how much i feel i learn from the two of you. Also also, yeah the audio is really not working. Some part of me feels like it has to be on purpose. Of all the the things that could be wrong, it’s the audio is going in and out? I don’t buy it lol. Anyway thanks again for posting Tom and the impact theory team.

Uh, it's Tom not Tim... Don't know if it's ego; I think he's aware of himself and his achievements and accepts them and gains energy from it. I would say many or most people don't often work on this, so maybe we don't recognize the difference...? Just a thought.

Great interview! My biggest struggle right now is that I really do not like the government in our country and province (I live in Ontario, Canada for reference). They take money from areas (education and health care) that I think we need it, and pocket more money to make the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. The middle class in Canada has been dissolving for years now. The government can use tax payer's money to go on private jets, expensive trips and fancy dinners and there is no accountability. And the part that frustrates me is that I feel powerless. Yes we can vote, but you are voting for mostly corrupt individuals who can say that they are going to do this, that and the other when they come into power, but if they don't do it once they're in power, there are no repercussions. I can email political officials about my concerns, but whenever I do, I just go an automated response. So again, my biggest struggle is that I feel powerless. I want to create change within our government system, but I don't know how. Any feedback, ideas?

Thank you as always for helping me look inward. I really loved the topic of self absorption and the ugly energy in the zeitigest. I think we are all navigating the mirror or should we say “black mirror” and there’s a lot of different ways to interpret what we see and how it affects our identity.

I can't believe between the two of them that they couldn't come up with the greatest example of a life of great effort and living and dying in misery. It's Vincent van Gogh. He sold almost nothing during his lifetime but now his works command millions of dollars. The most recent was November 9, 2022 for $117,180,000.00.

👍As a painter/musician you are soooo on point!! I had great moments of success , exhibits, sales etc but nothing equals the feeling of being alone with your work before it comes out and wandering if you made it , or discovering a new sound or texture and mastering a new instrument. Took me years to learn guitar/didgetidoo/ukulele etc and produce ....once you liberate yourself from the need to be valudated, you are saved!! Recognition is nice but can mess up with you if not prepared. Cheers 👌

The power argument also ties in with what Jordan Peterson preaches. It is about power and the best thing one can aspire to is to be powerful and capable of doing bad things but to voluntarily choose to use it for good.

Those self promotion ads come on out of nowhere, a transition might be nice, also they are too loud, compared with the rest of the video volume. Also it is so interesting to me how Robert makes this argument about social media. And yet he's on all of them even tik-tok, is it because that is a bigh part of his income, I understand we all need to eat, even if we don't like what we have to do to get money. Excellent talk, I am very stimulated by the understandings, lessons and personal viewpoints. Thank you for sharing.
