Rory Sutherland: Why Following Logic is Dangerous For Challenger Brands

  • You’re being too smart. And, it’s killing your brand.
Following logic. Leaning on experience as a crutch.
    When, ostensibly, it’s a shackle.
    Petrified of looking dumb.
    We pre-rationalise decision making.
So many brands, including myself, after a honey-moon of magical momentum become sterile, pallid, bland.
This moment is VERY dangerous for challenger brands.
    The Dip.
    Trough of Sorrow.
    Really bloody hard bit.
Rory says here, we must ditch experience and logic.
Instead, act with child-like wonderment and playful curiosity.
We may, just, stumble upon a whole new bounty of opportunity, none of your competition ever saw.
Delighted to welcome back Rory Sutherland on to the poddy.
    =================================================
    ON THE MENU:
    1. The problem with “purpose-led brands” = too boring and serious, Sausage Rolls can’t solve world problems
    2. Would Sushi actually taste good if it was from Somalia or Salford - provenance reframe
    3. The easiest way for restaurants/brands to stand out - create gratuitous perversity - Bacon Sandwich
    4. The first draft of everything is shit - pre rationalisation pisses over the bonfire of post rationalisation magic,
    5. Why a Kitchen porter or corner shop worker is the best MBA - see business as whole system vs. individual components
    6. Why You can't cut a sudoku: the optimisation of the parts doesn't create the optimisation of the whole,
    7. The peak end rule: How am experience ends is super important - coffee and beer sommeliers

I assume it’s the pit fall of someone who has a lot of head knowledge about production.
I’ve seen it happen a lot as a fashion photographer … where a photographer spends most his time ‘perfecting’ the lighting and angle and depth of field … instead of talking to the subject/model.
Sure it’s a technical masterpiece - but lacks conncection.
We tend to focus on the things we can control and are proficient in.

@@HungryFMCG Great content! Possibly a little late to the party on the viewing figures... my thought would be the video length. For a RUclips version of the podcast it's quite intimidating to see something at 2.5 hours (it's taken me months to decide to take the plunge). Perhaps break it down into 30-40 minute sections to make it a little more approachable? With the added advantage of more videos for the same content.

I think there is a well worn trope in business that you should always produce a product for a broad audience and not for a niche audience. For example an adult theme park would seem to go against the idea of a broad audience because you are excluding a large group and therefore limiting your potential profit, but this just homogenises these groups to the common denominator, IE. family friendly. Its the same reason that films or brands such as Star Wars are unable to serve the original audience and are therefore stuck serving nobody.
Perhaps, from a business perspective, it does make sense but my feeling is that so many brands could be so much more inventive if they played to a more specific audience.

Couldn’t help but notice that these two have some very strange body language going on. Rory sometimes turning his back on this dude in what seems like an act of dominance, or alternatively sitting at right angles respectively staring off into space. Almost like this guy is a prop, a launching pad for Rory to spout off into soliloquies on one topic or another.

Feedback from someone who listens to a lot of Rory for the host.
    - It appeared like you weren't that interested in Rory and even frustrated from your body language & there was a lot of interrupting from you.
People are here primarily to listen to Rory and you're there (in my view) to host Rory and ensure you get through x, y and z content.
It felt too much like you were trying to tell your stories.
    Hope that helps 🙌

thanks for feed back. few bits.
      1. I am moving around because not only am I hosting Rory, I am the sound engineer checking the audio and videographer checking the video. I am one man band on a budget and don't have the luxury of a producer, and vidoegrapher.
      2. What you've described is an INTERVIEW.
"People are here primarily to listen to Rory and you're there (in my view) to host Rory and ensure you get through x, y and z content." is
My podcasts are not INTERVIEWS - they're REAL LIFE CONVERSATIONS. Both sides speak. There are interruptions. That's real life.
