A bunch of US critics called it the best film of the year. I believe one of em said that it was unfair that it was in the foreign language category as it was a shoe-in.
Diego Pisfil - Dude, r u serious? I’ve watched both; and although I was completely in awe of Pan’s Labyrinth, The Lives of Others grasps the mind and soul!
@Diego Pisfil I felt this way too when Germany won but then I didn't see the film at the time. I saw it a few months later and man... They deserved the win.
So true. I believe he would have received a nod had the film premiered on time. It premiered in 2007 and wasn't eligible outside of foreign film. But this performance - in my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful, honest, and heartbreaking performances I've seen. Ever.
There is a story.. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was sit behind Guillermo del Toro and he said that if he lost will be ok only if del Toro wins. And Del Toro turn back and said the same.
I just watched the movie and literally was thinking it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, so I googled it to see other movies by the same actors only to find out that Ulrich died in 2007. RIP
One of the few cases that I didn't care my personal choice didn't win. While I wanted Pans Labyrinth to win, as I thought it was amazing, The Lives Of Others was also a truly incredible, and deserving of the honor. Congratulations Germany!
Scorsese is my favourite director ever but either “The Lives of Others” or “Pans Labyrinth” should definitely have won best picture over “The Departed”. Shows all the issues with the Academy; Goodfellas should have won in 1990 so they give Scorsese “The Departed” in 2006, Pans Labyrinth should have won in 2006 so “Shape of Water” wins. Constantly on catchup and very rarely award the best film of the year.
It reminds me as well of the film "AL Karnak" after the novel written by the Nobel prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. The same scenes and conversations tackling the idea of living under a police regime
2:23 See that actor ? Bald guy. It was his last movie and probably his last laugh. When I watched this movie and later found out that he is no more, I felt so sad and lost. RIP Ulrich Mühe.
Even though Pan’s Labyrinth didn’t win this category, it won Best Makeup, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography. This is the only movie to lose Best Foreign Language Film but to win other categories
I adore both pans labyrinth and the lives of others, but the latter is able to move people at their core, which is no small feat, and probably the best reason to get an Oscar win
I can't believe that Pedro Almodovar's movie 'Volver' wasn't nominated. This is a classic. The only reason I find is that 'El laberinto del fauno' (Pan's labyrinth) was filmed in Spain (co-production between Spain and Mexico)
Volver is a Spanish movie and Pan's Labyrinth is a Mexican movie. They were submitted for those countries and were both eligible for a nomination. The list of submitted films included 63 with 10 in Spanish.

'The Lives Of Others' is a amazing film but, let's be honest, everybody expect to win Mexico. Even, Cate was confused when announcing the winner. Curiosly, Blanchett and Owen worked that same year with a mexican director. She worked with Gonzalez Iñarritu in 'Babel', and he starred 'Children Of Men', directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
Watched both, the Lives of others is better, or at least I liked it more. PL was essentially a fairy tale, with black and white evil or great characters and had a strong political agenda, even if it was beautifully filmed. TLoO was great because it was just the opposite, a story for adults with layered/grey characters and with a nuanced political view.
The narrator is wrong. It was not the second but the third Oscar for Germany in that Category. The first one went to "The tin drum" (1979), the second one to "Nowhere in Africa" (2001).
Quem sabe! Até a próxima!
Really got screwed by the change in rules that prevented films that were nominated for best foreign language film for competing for other awards in the subsequent year. For example - Day For Night won for foreign film in 1973 and was nominated again the following year for direction and acting. The new rule basically disqualified The Lives Of Others - as it was not on general release in 2006. A greats shame as it remains one of the best films of that decade.
Yeah but Spain submitted Volver as their official entry and the film made the shortlist before eventually got snubbed for unknown reasons. If the Oscars can nominate Penelope Cruz, then surely Volver should have gotten in for Best Foreign Language Film.
Congrats to The Lives of Others but it's funny how Guillermo won an Oscar for Best Picture for The Shape of Water but it's clear that Pan's Labyrinth is the best movie he's ever made. It just doesn't compute with me how it didn't even win best Foreign Language Film that year. I'm sorry but it's crazy.
Because even though "Letters from Iwo Jima" was majorly in Japanese, it's still an American film. The Foreign Film award goes to the country of the film's origin.
