In this video tutorial, I will show you how to make a puzzle lampshade/lantern from the template for your home/room decor. This lamp/lantern is a dodecahedron, which contains 12 pentagons made up with 30 template units.
This DIY lamp is quite easy to make. Although the construction is quite simple, the pattern on the surface is beautiful to watch, when the light is turned on. This lamp is also quite suitable for the table top decoration if you have a suitable fixture.
For lamp construction, I recommend using papers with 180 gsm thickness or above. You may tape around the lamp opening to further secure the hanging light fixture.
For your safety, please use low energy or LED globe.

Hi, thanks a lot for the wonderful tutorial and your amazingly beautiful lamps. I really want to hear your thoughts about the following:
-I know these models, in general, are very difficult to do with thinner paper. I intent to use mulberry paper, which is very thin but holds well due to its strong plant fibers. Is there any way of securing the subunits such that they hold well with thin paper?
-I thought about gluing 3mm of fluorescent paper around the edges of all 30 subunits in the hopes that his well make the subunits hold the overall structure better. Would this work, of would I be wasting my time and money by even trying to use mulberry paper?
@GuilleBiochemist Glad you liked the lamp. The soft material will unlikely be strong enough. I would recommend rigid paper around or above 150 gsm.
This is wonderful!! Uhm what I have to make a 40cm diameter version of this? I'll just zoom in the 20cm diameter version to 50%? How about 60cm? Please reply thanks. I'll be doing this for my school project
+Thea Bautista Hi Thea.. Thanks for the comment. Ideally, when the lamp gets larger, the material you use to construct has to be firmer. The 180 gsm paper will not be strong enough to hold a 40 cm or 60 cm lampshade together. Could you get by just making smaller ones?
I'm planning on using 250 gsm bristol board for this. Will it hold together if I add some adhesive? Also, we will not put light inside, we just need the dodecahedron. I just really need how to print the size of the cutouts for 40cm and 60cm
+Thea Bautista Yes, using adhesive can help strengthen the units. 250 gsm is definately the maximal thickness for this project, but be careful with the final few units. You may have to bend them. Looks great, but how do you change the bulb? Is there a simple way to open it up again?
+John English - Thanks John. To change the light bulb, you could open up by lifting the units, if you have not applied fixative. Be careful though, not to tear them.

+Samantha Sanchez Hi Samantha, I have not tried acetate sheets. If you can create a crease in the middle of the unit without too much trouble and the material is strong enough to hold the structure, it should be achievable.
