I feel if you are paying a stylist their fee plus a generous tip, you need to be quiet. Use a good clarifying shampoo and if necessary dawn to get out excessive oils and butters on the hair. These stylist who complain don't want to use extra product to wash an oily head.

    Yes a scalp oil video soon would be great! I have a question for that of us that suffer from sebhorreic dermatitis. Washing our scalps often is the best practice, but that’s so hard on the hair. Would love to hear your thoughts on whether it would be best to wash frequently with our treatment shampoos, but use coconut oil on the hair first to protect it, or wash less frequently, but use some scalp oils that can help with the yeast. I’ve been reading a lot about borage oil and I’m curious to try it specifically.

      As a preface, I don't have very curly hair. My hair is oily and holds whatever shape it dries in, so that could be rather tight curls, or it could be rather straight. So I don't have much experience with dry curly hair, but I do have experience with Seb Derm.
      When it comes to Seb Derm, nearly any natural oil will exasperate it. The yeast feeds on oils. If your Seb Derm is flaring bad, avoid using oils until you get it under control. Your skin is a living organ and serves a very important purpose. It is best to prioritize it's health.
      When it comes to everyday care of your scalp and hair, use the medicated shampoo as needed. When flaring, it might be every couple of days or every day. When under control, it could be as little as once every couple of weeks or once a month. Or it could be anything in-between. Prescription shampoos work best, but store bought ones aren't a bad alternative if you don't have access. Just keep an eye on ingredients. Some care more for marketing and sales than your health.
      When not using the medicated shampoo, use a very gentle shampoo instead. I use Vanicream's. When buying a conditioner, avoid ones with oils known to exasperate Seb Derm. Coconut oil is one of those, sadly. Also read the ingredients for any other product you may use, like styling gels, clarifying shampoos, etc.
      The national excema association has a list of accepted products on their site. None of those products will feed the yeast. They don't have all types of products included though.
      Also, avoid anything that irritates your skin. For example, I learned that I am allergic to sulfates. Using things you are allergic to, even if only mildly, will likely make your seb derm worse.
      While I hate to say it, if you want to use oils when you have Seb Derm, you have to accept that it will feed the problem. While some people can manage their Seb Derm well enough to allow the use of some oils, some cannot. If the latter is you and you still want to use oils, I strongly advise against using them around your scalp if you can.
      And if worse comes to worse and you aren't attached to your hair, Seb Derm is easier to care for when hair is short. (In my experience anyway). I completely understand this isn't for everyone. It's just something I realized because I'm prone to cutting my hair into a pixie on a whim and then growing it out a couple of years later when I get bored with it. My Seb Derm is easier to manage with the pixie.
      This all being said, I'm not a dermatologist. This is all from my own personal experience. If your Seb Derm is a serious concern for you, I'd strongly suggest seeing a doctor. I didn't even need to see a dermatologist to get my prescription. My GP handled it. If you do see a dermatologist, they'd be able to recommend safe products to you.

      @@EllaBella-76 So I think there may be a language or dialect barrier here, because I admittedly had a hard time reading your comment. If I understood correctly, you are using Castor oil and a Shea beauty shampoo.
      If your son's Seb Derm is under control, then I'm happy for you! It can be difficult getting there. I think my mom cried on occasion when mine flared when I was young too. I cried too when she had to treat it because my scalp was in pain. It was rough. You definitely aren't alone in that experience.
      If your son still struggles with it, I do have to warn that Shea butter, castor oil, coconut oil, and many other oil based ingredients found in Shea beauty products make Seb Derm worse. Any evidence towards the contrary is anecdotal, as there as been no concrete evidence that any of these ingredients help Seb Derm. However, there is strong reason to believe that they make it worse as the yeast feeds on them. Problem oils can help with the look of dryness that Seb Derm creates at a surface level, but they will most likely make the condition worse over time, including the dryness. At least this is the leading theory by experts right now, as far as I know.
      From what I understand, Seb Derm skin is dry because it lacks water, not oils. The skin lacks water because the skin is damaged by the excess of yeast. The skin can't retain it's moisture as well when damaged. This yeast feeds on oils. So the more oils the Seb Derm has, the more yeast there will be, and the more damaged the skin will become.
      When Seb Derm flares, the idea is to starve the yeast and target it with an antifungal. That means no added oils, and using an active ingredient like ketoconazole. This has been the proven way to help it.
      Again, if your son's Seb Derm is being well managed, then ignore everything I said. Just thought I would share just in case.
      And for some semi-related information I am tacking on just in case someone needs to hear it: not everything we consider dandruff in layman's terms is Seb Derm. Dry skin can cause flakes too. The flakes look different, but it is easy to confuse if you don't know the difference. The two are treated in rather opposite ways, so it's an important distinction to make before treating it.

      Tsal or something with salicylic acid helps exfoliate the scalp and cut down on flakiness. Once I got my scalp under control I dont have to use salicylic acid as much. Products like head& shoulders, and selsun blue only helped relieve my flakiness for the first initial washes. Using them constantly made my scalp worse. I started getting patches that were drier and came off in chunks leaving my scalp raw.
      I use castor oil to help my scalp as well. A little goes a long way.

    I'm not quite sure when the myth that oils are moisturizing came into being but somehow it took off and I think that's what confused everybody. I've only known oils to be penetrative or sealing. Then one day a couple years ago I was seeing all the girls getting upset and telling everybody not to put oil in their hair anymore.
    I also agree with the idea that people were not cleaning their hair enough and that's what was causing the problem. There are people to this day that shampoo their hair once every month whether they have extensions, a weave, whatever. So they're steady putting all these heavy oils and butters in on their hair and literally never cleaning it off. Then, when they finally do wash their hair, not only are they shedding a bunch of hair but it's dry and fragile and breaking off. And they never seem to connect the fact that they haven't moisturize their hair in literally a month. I also think that people don't pay attention to the different sections of their hair and take care of how they treat it. The roots are the strongest they're brand-new, the mid is slightly weaker, and your ends are the most frail and need the most care. My mom taught me this over thirty years ago and I followed it ever since. Never had any issues with my hair.
    It's not the oils and butters y'all, it's your strategies and your methods that are off.

    • @verreal
      @verreal Год назад

      Well, it makes sense because oil blocks water, it's hydrophobic. But is that a seal? Aha. Also, it seems to soak in and is shiny. Just put some linseed oil on your antique furniture and you'll be amazed. So it looks moisturized.

    Great video as usual!
    I'll always swear by coconut oil because back when my hair was bleached into oblivion and was super dry and damaged, applying coconut oil for a few hours before each wash made a HUGE difference, it pretty much saved my hair (all other products I was using were the same, I should add, so the oil was the only difference). Nowadays my hair is healthy (no longer bleached), so I don't really see much of a difference using it, but for damaged hair it definitely helps, so whenever people try to say it does nothing without evidence it always makes me pretty skeptical about the rest of what they're saying (like these TikTokers).

      @Linda Koberna Don't worry, coconut oil is coconut oil, if you already have one that's perfect. It's actually better to buy organic coconut oil like this (the less processed the better) because it will be in a more natural state, hair products will likely have added products to it or may have it more refined to make it more liquid, which actually makes it less effective.

    Because of this debate about using oils and banning oils I really couldn't tell anymore what was true. This messed up my whole view of having curly and I was done with the stress it was giving me... So I shaved it all off for 9+ months and now i'm growing it out again. Because all that stress and money for overly expensive products wasn't worth it. Now i'm not stressed about my hair at all and don't have 20+ products in my collection. I have a few products and I understand that hair is just hair and don't fix something that isn't broken, like oils. 🤷🏽‍♀

  • @rainbownarah
    @rainbownarah Год назад +9

    i never was able to get definition in my hair until i stopped using the oils and leave ins like these licensed stylists of 20+ years suggested. and it also helped me save a lot of money to just shampoo and condition and use one styling product weekly so i recommend everyone try it 😬 they also helped me to understand that there are a lot of other misconceptions in the curly hair community such as the fact that your hair has an inherent "porosity" rather than it being an attribute that can change depending in the environment or health/level of damage of the hair (can also be affected by oil build up). truly, if hair is dry, this can only be fixed by water scientifically, since that is the only thing that can actually provide hydration. oils can only lubricate and give a feeling of "moisture" but in the long run just prevent the water from doing its job of hydrating the hair 🤷🏾‍♀️ and they are not making your hair grow either i fear 😭 it grows no matter what!

    • @personmcdudeguy
      @personmcdudeguy Год назад +5

      Only problem is that "dry" hair isn't actually dry, it is usually just damaged and unconditioned... Healthy hair still contains more natural oils than damaged hair. Damaged hair contains more water than healthy hair because it is more porous.

      I use an hot oil treatment overnight. Then wash out the next morning, deep treatment, then style. I may use a pomade or lighter oil to break the cast.
      For blow outs I haven’t found anything yet that doesn’t build up on my hair without using a harsh shampoo. Most contain dimethicone and or trimethicone which keeps building up and does not keep my hair straight during high humidity……so bring in hair grease for my straightening days. (Hair grease is easier to remove than the “build up” of trimethicone, dimethicone and polyquats for me.
      The only “cones” my hair loves and does not build up on itself are bis-aminodimethicone and amodimethicone.

    There are enough oils, emollients, AND silicones in products that using more ON TOP (which is what people are doing) is overkill. Which is what those stylists are ACTUALLY saying.
    It's why all of a sudden, people are saying Olaplex is "ruining" their hair. It's just the 'cones and oils in the products building up, dehydrating the hair and contributing to breakage

    Hey Mel! Since you mentioned UV damage, I've had a question for a while that I'm absolutely desperate to have answered: I walk in the sun a full hour every day (even in winter - sunny San Diego) to get to and back from work. I have 3b medium-to-coarse, medium-to-dense hair that is very, very dry. The hair at the top of my hair is obviously fried from the sun, it's 100% frizzy 100% of the time and sticks out of my otherwise round curly shape no matter how I try to tame it. I ended up cutting half of its length (only the hair on top), which made it much better. But I'm still walking in the sun, and my hair is too short to tie up in a protective style. I've been trying out the Sun Bum Revitalizing 3 in 1 leave-in recently, which claims to offer UV protection. I'm not sure it will help in the long run. Any other tips? I hope this gets a reply!!

Plus its dryer in the winter. Your girl needs them heavy leave-ins. Which means more clarifying. The one stylist kind of poo pooing on clarifying should specify these tips are different depending on your climate and hair porosity.
