My all time favorite book probably has to be Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami, I think. Have to reread it again and find out 😊 I really love the night circus as well. And I am so happy that you love the shadow of the wind! I read the second one and it is as good as the first. Still have to read the other two though and can't wait
Oooh nice! Definitely deserves a reread to find out! YAY another fan of The Night Circus and Shadow of the Wind 😄🙌 I still need to read the second one, whoops. Maybe in 2019? Hopefully!
great video! I always love hearing about peoples favourites! Also, oh my god, you totally blew my mind when you said Hygge - until now I'd never heard it said out loud, I always thought it would be said like 'hi-gee' hahah, glad I now know how to say it properly!
I have a couple of books I'm planning on reading over the Christmas period and The Night Circus is on my list! I'm very intrigued to see what everyone's been talking about for years. I loved hearing you talk about all of your favourites and why you loved them!!
YESSSSS The Night Circus is PERFECT over christmas! I always reread around this time. I want to this year because I missed out for the past couple of times, but there's so many other books I want to read while I can so I don't know if I will. I really REALLY hope you adore it!
it was lovely to hear you talking about your favorites 💕 I'm so picky when it comes to choosing favorites! I don't think I'd be able to do this 😅 The Book Thief and The Night Circus have been on my tbr for ages! That Hygge books looks adorable, I almost bought it the other day! aaah I really need to reread The Shadow of the Wind! AH GAME OF THRONES, I'M SCREAMING
It took me yearssss to get even 10 favourites, and even now it's not a "safe" list because there's at least two on there that might come off it ahaha. Re-reading the shadow of the wind is well worth it, I did so last year I think! And gotta love GoT!!
Great video! I love how much you are smiling when talking about your favourites :) All-time favourite for me is The Shadow of the Wind - you summed it up perfectly, the writing is just phenomenal. My others include: The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman; Angels and Demons by Dan Brown; Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle; Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo; The Pigeon Tunnel by John le Carre; and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. A mix of fantasy, mystery and nonfiction - with all them having an entertaining and compelling story at the heart of it.
Just love gushing about all the fab books! Ahh I didn't know Shadow of the Wind was your ultimate fave! Yayyyyyy Can't wait to get to Amber Spyglass (you need to prester me into continuing the series!). Maybe I'll do Dan Brown one day. Maybe.
I read Sir Gawain and agree it's great! To understand the ending you need to know that it has to do with allegory and chivalry -- luckily I read the book in school and the professor explained it all very well. But even if you don't know the hidden meaning it's still a top adventure. My favorite novels of all time are the two more famous Alice books: Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass.
I’m pretty late to this vid but I loved it! When I watch these types of vids there usually aren’t many that I add to my wish list but nearly everything you talked about I want to read
I wouldn’t even be able to put Harry Potter on my list because it’s not a favourite of mine 😂 I have read the book thief and loved it but I haven’t reread it in ages so I’m not sure it would be on my list like you, either. But I did love it. It’s interesting that her translation of The Odyssey cuts a lot of the sexism. I didn’t have to read it for uni but if I read it of choice I’d read her translation. We had to read the original text for Sir Gawain and the painstaking translating took away a lot of my enjoyment. But I read it twice and liked the story well enough. I might have loved it if we were able to read the Armitage translation too 😭 The Bone Season has been on my shelf for ages and I neeeed to read it. Oh, I love Circe too! A definite favourite discovery of this year. And I really loved A Game of thrones. I just haven’t been able to make it through the second book? Not even sure why 🤔 My recent video: ruclips.net/video/2s0ol9r4moA/видео.html
Fair enough 😂 I'm glad to hear you loved The Book Thief, even if it was ages ago! Aw no, I can't imagine having to translate the original version of Sir Gawain. That must've been so difficult. I remember our lecturer casually read out part of the original and I was baffled that he was fluent ahaha. It's such a specific skill. To be fair the Game of Thrones books take a LOT of motivation to pick up the next, just because of the sheer size of them. So I don't blame you!
I read The Book Thief years ago, and like you I would have to reread it to see if I'd enjoy it as much now. I think I read The Night Circus last year and I really liked it, and I've been wanting to reread it ever since because I read it in like 2 days lol. And last month I read The Little Book of Lykke (loved it), and I want to read the Hygge one as well. I love these type of videos; my tbr has grown because of it now!
I think I'm quite as pricky as you are regarding my favourite books, even if I tend to be kind of... moody about my top ten. Just recently, for example, I have added "a darker shade of magic" to it because, gods, I literally fell over for it! I hadn't read a book so powerful since I finished "The wheel of time" nearly 5 years ago!
NOBODY NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT HARRY POTTER ANYMORE?! YOU TAKE THAT BAAACKKKK!!! Hahahaha, but no no I totally understand, and I'm excited to see all these books, and glad there's an extra spot for another wonderful book to be put on the list. I'm totally imagining a drinking game now though where we put all your videos in a playlist, play them at random and take a shot at the mention of The Night Circus, hahaha! I lent my copy of the book to a friend and have not had it back, so I feel like I need to buy a new copy and have a reread because it's been so long since I last read it! I seem to remember I got through most of it on a flight to Buenos Aires! I mean Hygge is totally you, hahaha! I can absolutely imagine you in Copenhagen and living your best life, and being so happy! The new edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is so beautiful and I am definitely intrigued to pick it up myself, I think I've said before to you, but I really need to read some Arthurian legends because I literally know none! I did read most of the Iliad, I don't think I was able to finish it though, and I think by the sounds of it, The Odyssey seems more likely that I'd enjoy it, and seems like I would love all the mythical and magical elements of it that I felt like I missed in the Iliad, and was expecting more of! I'm also waiting (super excitedly) for Circe to come out in paperback hahaha! Wait what?! There are SEVEN books in the Bone Season series?! I thought it was just a trilogy! Hahaha, to be honest, that kind of puts me off reading it, I feel like I need to know the series will be finished soon rather than having to wait so long! I am planning to try my hand at reading some classics next year and E M Forster is definitely on my list, but I think I'll try Where Angels Fear to Tread as it sounds like the most intriguing to me, but it makes me happy to know that one of his other books is on your top ten list!! :D LOVED THIS VIDEO, and was perfect after your collaboration with Jess
Aha! To be fair for every time someone in a video says "we're not going to talk about Harry Potter", they talk about Harry Potter sooooooo do we just have a lowkey agenda to mention it at all times? Yes. Honestly I feel like I've been mentioning The Night Circus more than ever at the moment and last night I decided to start re-reading it, so start a drinking game at your own risk ahahaha. You're next comment with just be an inebriated mess. Reading the Hygge book made me want to do exactly that, hop on a plane and say goodbye to the stress of life and live a happier one surrounded by all the cosyness and pastries. Just their entire work ethic and care towards people's health sounds like something we need to adopt in Britain. It;s no wonder they're dubbed the happiest people! I barely know of any Arthurian legends myself yet! I have a beautiful edition of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table that I need to read, but it's huge, with tiny font on bible pages. It's intense. The Iliad definitely doesn't compare to The Odyssey in my opinion! It's a good read, yeah, but a slog to get through. The Odyssey had me eager to turn every page. And I'm intrigued to see if they'll change the cover of the paperback for Circe. I might end up buying a copy to annotate (I was sent both of the copies I have so I don't feel too excessive throwing money about aha!). Yep, a whole seven books!! It's going to be a loooooong wait. I'm not surprised it puts you off to be fair, it does with me when I see long series. But I adore it so much that I find it so exciting. And I feel like it kind of acts as a testament to how much I love it. I'm USELESS at continuing series even when I love the first book, and yet here I am fully keeping up to date with all of her releases. I have Where Angels Fear to Tread on my bookshelf waiting to be read, so if I have the time outside of uni maybe we could buddy read? Either way, I'd be intrigued to hear your thoughts on Forster! I didn't get along with Howard's End anywhere near as much, so I'm intrigued about my own thoughts on it too ahaha. Thank you Matthew!!
What a great list! As you know I enjoyed the Night Circus a lot on a reread but I also really enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind and Game of Thrones on this list! Hoping to get to the Samantha Shannon book soon! Great video :D
Absolutely loved the oddessy and the asoiaf series (although I'm convinced I'll have died before he's released the finale). Am still patiently waiting for Circe to come out in paperback 😭 Couldn't possibly pick a favourite but the two I'm loving at the moment are Gone with the Wind and Therese Raquin by Zola
Yayyy another fan of The Odyssey! I love it so much. Ahh I'm waiting for the paperback of Circe myself, I feel like I should add it to the collection ahaha! I really do hope you adore it when you get to it!
My workplace has its headquarter's in Denmark and copies of "The Little Book of Hygge" are littered all over our Manhattan office. I saw you holding up the book and thought, "Oh, my work is following me through RUclips now!" :-D The Danish do indeed take their hygge very seriously!
Have you read Howards End by E.M. Forster? I loved A Room with a View quite a bit but Howards End was so much better. It is still hilarious but also a bit more serious than A Room with a View.
I have, but I didn't get along with it too well unfortunately! I think I rated it about 3 stars? It just wasn't for me, I think I get along with Forster's stories a lot more when they're shorter
Have you read A Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak? I read it this week. I think you'd like it. Have you linked to Jason at Old Blues Chapter and verse? He's counting everyone's top ten , to make a a booktube award.
I haven't, I'm waiting for the paperback! It's had really mixed reviews so I'm intrigued about it. And nope, haven't even heard of it! I'll have to check it out :)
Totally agree with you about George R.R. Martin, he needs to release the next book! I think at least one of my favorites would have to be The Lord of the Rings.
We're all waiting! It's just frustrating because OTHER books keep being released by him, just please finish the one we're waiting for!! Arghhh. I haven't read The Lord of the Rings, I feel like I have to someday being a fantasy fan
@@AFrolicThroughFiction Right?! Like a prequel series is great but....give us the rest of the original series first!!! Between George R.R. Martin, Scott Lynch and Patrick Rothfuss I'm surprised more people aren't bald because of all the hair I'm sure they're tearing out haha. You don't have to read anything just because you're a fantasy fan...but it is encouraged haha! The Fellowship of the Ring is a little daunting to get through because it's a lot of description that drags at times (though it is lovely writing). But The Two Towers and ultimately the Return of the King are worth getting through Fellowship.
The world's favourite, if I remember correctly! I do write English subtitles for all of my videos so if you have that problem again, the option is there to help! :)
A Frolic Through Fiction thanks 😀 I rewatched it with subtitles and yea, it’s the worlds favourite. Memoirs of a Geisha. I need to reread it because it’s been a long time, but there was something about it that I just found magical.
