My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ RUclips. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of RUclips I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on RUclips won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.

I'm 50 and watched both Michael and Bron. You nailed it when you said back then you had to work through muggings to score. If Jordan played in this Era his output would have been so beyond belief. Bron is great. But his Airness is untouchable.

There wasn't nearly the super athletes at the wing positions back then as there are today. The schemes are even different now. That's why teams are loading up.

I’m 49. I watched Jordan throughout his career. IMO Jordan passed Bird and magic after the first 3 peat then passed Kareem and Russell after the 2nd 3 peat. Jordan would use anything to motivate himself. Reporters said he didn’t play defense then next season he was defensive player of the yr. He had zero weakness. Insane mid range and finisher. 6 final MVP never a game 7 his mental toughness was off the charts.
I grew up in Chicago. Literally watched every game Jordan ever played. Saw him live...there are a few people like this in other sports where it seems like the chances of them scoring or not is in nobody's control but their own. Jordan truly had an aura about him.
LeBron is the best player of the last 20 years. He's not Jordan though. The league is too soft for him to take nearly 20 years to pass some of these scoring records.
To answer your question at the end. No. It's not about total titles. Bill Russel is the goat if that's all we go by. It's that Jordan dominated 5 teams over the course of 6 championships littered with Hall of Famers like it was nothing. His regular season play was tremendous. When Jordan was in the playoffs he was supernatural.

"The Jordan Rules". When a whole team (the Pistons) changes how they play the game because you're on the court, all in an effort to shut you down, I think that's where I'd put "GOAT".
Especially when those rules were basically beat the shit out of Jordan. Don’t believe me look at the interviews given by Isiah, Rodman and others. They admitted it.
MJ still has my vote for GOAT, but on this particular point of the Pistons changing their gameplan, here's some food for thought: Wilt Chamberlain’s dominance made the entire NBA change its rules.
They widened the free-throw lane and made changes involving inbounding the ball and offensive goaltending. They also banned dunking from the free-throw line, which Chamberlain mastered in high school.
Some of these rule changes are still in place. One of them being goaltending.
He became the GOAT when he finally got past the Pistons and took the Bulls to Finals and won.
Than again Larry Bird called him God after he dropped 63 on them. Loved that game!!!

I remember grown-up that when Michael played EVERYBODY watched. Old, young, fans, haters, it didn't matter. Because when he played you knew that he was going to do something special. He redefined the game. Lebron is good, but Michael was the greatest...of all time.

Lebran is amazing and when fresh has a great physical dominating presence, and passes good. The thing is Jordan had much better Endurance, playing like an animal the Entire game, both offense and defense. He dictated the pace of the game.
With how physical the game was back then, it’s pretty amazing that MJ still managed to play 82 games 9x throughout his career. That’s underrated.
what's even more amazing is Lebron has played all 82 exactly 1 time in his career in a much softer league. How much less would Lebron have had in the tank come playoff time if he actually had to put in an honest regular season workload?

@@mikekendrick4586 in addition to the 9 seasons he played all 82, he also played seasons of 81 (missed one due to suspension), 80 and 78. He even played a full 82 as a 40 year old. No such thing as load management for him. It's crazy the contracts they get now are 10x the contracts the 90s players got yet they only have to play 75% of the time now.

In 1993, the media pushed MJ as the GOAT and mostly everybody believed he was. I accepted him as the GOAT during the 72 win season. For a player to win three str8 championships, retire for almost 2 years, comeback and then win three more was incredible.
The media didn't push it. There was no social media and just brief segments on tv and couple magazines. People watched him play and that spoke for itself. Plus Magic and Bird were out there saying he was the best ever.

Old cat here. Huge Larry Bird fan. Celtics all the way. Bird is my favorite player & I believe one of the greatest minds in basketball as a player. That being said, it was apparent almost immediately that Jordan was built different than any other player before him. He scored 63 points on my 1986 Celtics in the Playoffs...a record at that time....but lost the game. He never beat Bird's Celtics in the playoffs because he didn't have the team yet. So many people nowadays think the Jordan Era started in 1990-91...that is untrue. If you were around back then, you knew the Jordan Era started in his rookie year. The Bulls Era started in 1990. Jordan averaged 28+ in his rookie year & put fear in other players/teams even then. For back then times, Jordan was Larry Bird, Magic Johnson & Dr J all wrapped in one....with some extra. It all sounds inflated & unbelievable...but that was Jordan....from jump. He would average 40+ easily in todays NBA. No hand checking & the 3 second rule on D...it would be too easy. The NBA was rough back then. Way more physical. You take that physicality away & it would just be unfair. When most of the league is wearing your sneakers while you play against them, that says it all. That's where "It's gotta be the shoes" came from. I love the NBA to this day. I'm not an old head that hates on today. I evolved with the game to keep appreciating it. That being said, in my life, I have never seen anything like Michael Jordan since. I saw some similarities in some players like Kobe. Lebron is admittedly one of the greats already(hurts to say that, but I'm not ignorant)...but he is not close to a Jordan. His longevity may get him the records. He could break every record Jordan has. I know ball. He is no Jordan. There is only one Jordan. The GOAT.

MJ was an icon approaching goat status by 92’ when the dream team massacred the world at the olympics. Athletically people pretty much all knew it was MJ. But I would say it was when he came back and essentially reinvented his game while still incorporating the flash when necessary. 96-97 MJ was a thing to behold. He was officially the goat by then…but for me his flu game was when he passed from the realm of mortal to super hero.

This. You had to follow each season as they unfolded and see how he dismantled every opposing team, especially in the playoffs. That's where he truly shined.

This is so true. No amount of highlights can capture his greatness. Because some of his plays you have to consider the context of the game. Was it a crucial play (defensive or offensive). The gravity of the situation, that wasn't captured in the highlights.

@@Ozem_Israel It may very well be nostalgia. But you are right, numbers speak for themselves. Someone made a video comparing Jordan of 1991 to Lebron of 2013. Regular season numbers, playoff numbers and then finals numbers. As the season progresses, Jordans numbers and efficiency went up all the way to the finals. Lebron's regular season numbers were impressive to but as the playoffs and finals went his numbers went down. That's what I meant by the gravity of the situation not being shown in the clips being shown in this video. Maybe I wasn't able to explain it properly and that's on me.

I'm 43, and I am from Detroit, so I was a full-time fan (we only had a few channels back then, after all) very early on, and had championship basketball to watch. I watched the Bad Boys hold him down.
We knew he was in the conversation for the greatest ever after the first three-peat and the retirement, but the longevity would have absolutely been questioned. When he came back and started putting it on people again in 1995-96, to that level... we knew it was special. He was a force of nature that changed the entire building when you saw him come onto the floor.
Kenny Smith said it best... he was the best fundamental player AND the best athlete. I mean, Jordan shot almost 50% career, and did the majority of his work in the midrange, with the 3-point nowhere near as prevalent as it is now. That fadeaway was unguardable and he didn't miss. LeBron does almost all of his work from inside three-feet, and is honestly a pretty awful shooter, though he has improved from what he was. This was obviously during the time where there wasn't only the physicality when he went to the hole, but also out on the perimeter, and you could actually put hands on Mike.
His FG% for his Bulls career is .505... and most people considered him both the best offensive AND best defensive player in the league... LeBron, honestly, hasn't truly tried on defense in several seasons.
I'm not trying to take away from LeBron's greatness, he's one of the greatest ever -- but there's absolutely no shame in being well-behind Michael Jordan.
My favorite thing to see is the reactors face slowly go from unimpressed, to impressed, to wtf, to "That's God playing ball."

Great question. Never heard it asked before. I've watched LBJ's entire career (including H.S., I'm from Ohio). I watched Jordan through his time at N.C. (starting his soph. year). I think the public began to see Jordan as the GOAT around the 1992 Olympics. The Nike contact and media blitz helped bring the public along (with the idea of him being the GOAT). He was known worldwide. Other Olympic basketball players were asking for pictures of him during the games. If you look back at the interviews with greats from his era, it seems, they were already recognizing him as the greatest (or as one of the greatest) prior to 1992. Look at the Magic interview where he discusses the greatest game ever played (referring to the 1992 team scrimmage between "Jordan's team and his team). So many great HOF players from that era (guys who idolized players of the 1960's and 1970's) were already referring to Jordan as the best player they had ever seen. Don't know if that answered your question, but that's my "take" on it. Great video.
MJ was elegant and graceful. He brought NBA and basketballs popularity to a different level in the late 80s and throughout 90s. Even today he’s name is still a household name.

Never compare Michael Jordan to players that never went through this level of physical play. They really are no comparisons that even make sense. Mostly contested layups and dunks. As a matter of fact. Just do only Lebron James highlights and see if all of it holds up like Michael Jordan's have over the time.

@@isamel-hussein9186 He came in 2003-2004, and in 2005 the NBA opened up it's rules a lot more to allow offensive players easier access to the rim, etc. I think the NBA did that on purpose in hopes to build their brand back up and help to promote or create their supposed, 'KING'. Him being a bigger wing and suddenly life is easier to get the rim, since he has never been a super consistent jump shooter, or able to rely on that consistently when it matters. All you have to do is comparing overall NBA scoring averages of now to say 1997-98'. The type of spacing and stuff that he has had. It is no comparison at all! If somehow you could flip eras with Mike and LeBron, I feel it would only enhance Mike even more and dramatically lower Bron's stats!
@@nathandalebout2141 what are you talking about the NBA expanded their defensive rules to allow the defense from the opposing team to play off man to man defense and play a zone defense witch is harder to score on then man to man defense the only rules they banned for the defense were hand checking and a few other rules
after his first championship. he came back the next year with an air of confidence and you could see it every night playing. so did the rest of the league and they feared him. He toyed with all the teams. The whole team was confident in their 2nd and 3rd championship. you could see it. Even if they were down by 20, they were coming back
M.J. will always be the G.O.A.T to me. He changed the way the game was played and brought alot of the showman to the game. I remember trying to mimic jordan all the the time growing up. From his college days, to Chicago and all 6 championships, all the way to the wizards, he showed why he was great. M.J., you da man!

For me, there was never really a moment when I said he was the GOAT. When you watched him play, you just knew there was noone else like him. His games were some of my best childhood memories....just actually seeing him do the things he did

I agree, while we were watchin him, it was never a time where we realized he’s the GOAT, I feel in the moment when the bad boy pistons beat him up and he worked out that whole off-season and came back the next season ripped and made the same bad boy pistons walk off the court before the end of the game, beatin Magic lakers that was kinda like oh shit this dude built different!!
I was one of the original Raptors dancers, and I got to see MJ play live in the era of him, Scottie Pippin, and Denis Rodman. MJ was a beast! He dominated every skill, season, and sentiment. What made him even more of a champion was his humility and his grace. He was a team builder and an encourager. He was so kind and enthusiastic about the sport and youth. To watch him live was to witness greatness! #23
AMEN! LeBron is a good, maybe even great, basketball player. Jordan WAS basketball in that he worked, studied lived and breathed the game, not just played it. He stayed with one team, and won the big prize 6 times. THAT'S what rubs me wrong with LeBron; he chases rings...not a good look (IMO), compared to building on what you have. So, even if LBJ gets seven, it somehow is dimmed because of that; again in my opinion. Plus, Jordan was poetry in motion, beautiful to watch.
I got to see him live the first year they won in Portland and because of my brother in law got to sit with coaches and players at the bar. Tex and Phil sat at our table…but I also wished I’d seen you…I mean…you know…never mind 🤦🏻
@@wandaminter9421 Agree with you about staying with a team, helping teammates improve and building something great together. MJ is respected by fans, and franchises in the league can only hope to have someone like him remain with their organization and help create a dynasty.
Although some people from Cleveland or Miami or LA, MAY respect LeBron, I think that majority of fans of those teams look at him as just some guy who is passing through their town, and will jump ship the moment he sees another way to fish for a route to an easier championship win. WHY would anyone respect that? Everybody I know always rolls their eyes and says "here he goes again" when the off season starts and you hear Lebron is calling up all the top players, or moving to another team. Seriously, what's to respect about that?
@@avoidtheattic2688 Ha! Perfectly said. I AM one of those fans (Cleveland - the first to get dumped). I was annoyed and bemused by the whole "The Decision" theatrics. Then he came back, gave us a much needed shot in the arm, and we LOVED it. Still, he left us again, but this time the sting wasn't there. We shrugged and moved on.
You are right, at least in my eyes. I admire his skills and humanitarian efforts for sure. But it is chasing the easy win that takes some of the luster away. Not for him though; a ring is a ring. But all the rings in the world do not give one greatness, just jewelry.
@@wandaminter9421 LeBron reminds me of that guy at work who is always kissing someone's ass, sucking up to his boss, and is always getting a promotion they don't deserve and didn't earn. Got the promotion the easy way, and EVERYONE at work knows it and talks about it, but he's oblivious to it and walks around like some big shot. That's LeBron to me. Ring chasing , going for it the easiest way he can find, and proclaiming himself the GOAT but being completely oblivious to the fact that it's not the number of rings that you have that make you the greatest. Jordan's 6 rings is the outcome of work ethic, skill, passion, and a drive to BEAT the best in the game. Those are what made him the greatest. He made his teammates better by leading by example (sometimes being fanatical and going too far at times) but he built a dynasty by doing that. That's why he is held in the highest regard.
I seriously don't know anyone that looks at LeBron in that fashion. I think he's a great player without a doubt, but to me, he's just another guy in the league, jumping teams from one to another. One of the top guys for sure, but nothing beyond that.
Personally, growing up watching Jordan, he was always one of the best as a kid in the 90's, but when he "retired" to go play baseball and then came back and won 3 more championships was when I knew he was the GOAT
Preciate the respect for the old heads young blood. As a 43yr old .. the era of basketball we lived thru was just pure bliss! It was the height of basketball period .. the highest point ‘92 dream team. No one will ever be better than MJ and I wasnt even a Jordan fan (Magic and Kareem were my guys)

What always impressed me about mj is he was always turned up to 100 every second of every game no matter what the score was and no matter how much time was left and he played just as hard on defense as he did offense. He was so intense and truly dedicated.
Having been able to watch both player through their careers I can say they are both 2 of the greats. That being said I don't think James is on the same level as Jordan as an all around player. Jordan simply excelled in every aspect of the game. He was on another level and just made everything look easy. He could step it up even more when it counted during the important games. I don't see this from James at the same level as Jordan.
Watching Jordan play in the 80's/90's was like watching a 3D movie in IMAX. He was significantly ahead of his time. The dude had the athleticism of modern-day players with the mental toughness of old era players. I've been watching basketball since 99, became a superfan in 2002, and since then I still have not seen anyone come close to MJ with Kobe being the one exception.

EVERYONE became interested in the NBA. Everyone knew how special Jordan was. Everyone wanted his shoes. Everyone wanted to play at school and after school. These days, we're back to only a very small minority here having any interest. If Lebron was anywhere near Jordan's level, the world outside the USA would notice like they did in the 90s.....

The fact that Lebron was so hyped. I’m from Cle and exactly 1 yr younger than Lebron so I was high school and old enough to understand just how insane the hype was. They were showing his games on ESPN when he was 17. To actually deliver on that kind of national hype, it’s seriously almost impossible to actually live up to that….However, I grew up in a world that was Michael Jordan. By the time my brain was able to form memories, I remember that Michael Jordan played basketball and was the most famous and talked about person in the world. I wasn’t old enough to really understand what made him so great. But when I was growing up in elementary school there was never a time that anyone even questioned that Michael Jordan was the best basketball player on the planet. There were many other guys that were great, other guys we’d call as ourselves when we played (I’m Shawn Kemp! I’m Mark Price! I’m Shaq!) but MJ was always hands down no question about it better than all of our other favorite players. That’s why us “old heads” scoff at the Lebron comparison. Bc if they played in the same era, Lebron would be closer to Shaq level than MJ. Lebron might have been the closest to him, but prime MJ was untouchable. Even tho Lebron will end up with a more accomplished and you can easily say better career bc of his longevity and all the career records he’s on pace to break, but Lebron at his best was never as good as Jordan at his best. He just isn’t as skilled as MJ, he really isn’t. No one was, no one has been since.

Watched Jordan growing up. I watched him score in every way, shape, form and fashion. From wherever the moment called for. He did things no one can. Air Jordan is the perfect nickname for him. Triple clutch/pump in midair, then scores, among other things. All He wanted was to lead teams and win championships. Singularly focused, even as the Pistons beat the crap outta him every time he touched the ball. Triple teams will do that for you. Among all, just fun and entertaining to watch. I couldn't look away. The finals against the Suns convinced me Jordan had been touched by the divine hand. No matter what the Suns did or how close they got, Jordan WILLED the Bulls to that title. As a Suns fant I KNEW what was about to happen yet still my jaw dropped every time. It was truly something out of this world to watch in person that the highlights do not do justice. There has never been a more fierce competitor in professional team sports. EVER. He had that KILLER instinct that went for the jugular every time.

I grew up in North Carolina and watched MJ play for UNC and help them win a National Championship. So we knew he was great before he even played for the Bulls. He played for the Bulls during a time when basketball truly was a contact sport, and he competed against some of the greatest players (and teams) of all time and still won 6 championships. Watching MJ play was something special. LeBron is a great player and there’s no denying that, but there was something magical about MJ that would’ve made him great at anything.

There was less longevity back then, not just because of the physical play, but there was no load management, sport science wasn’t what it is today, and players actually stayed in college. Growing up watching the NBA, if Jordan was playing, you basically assumed the Bulls would win. It didn’t matter who the team was. Can you say that about Lebron? I couldn’t. By the way, he would have been in the majors if the MLB strike didn’t happen and he didn’t have the itch to go back to playing basketball. He batted over 200 in AAA which is absolutely amazing for someone who hadn’t played baseball since he was a kid. He is the ultimate competitor (sometimes to his detriment as a human) and that’s what separates him from everyone else to me.
It mostly had to do with guys playin just as hard on D and offense. MJ nvr took a break on the Defensive side. I've seen Lebron take many many breaks on D. All players do now not just Lebron.

I turn 50 in November, so I am blessed in that I grew up watching many of the greats play during their primes. Watching Jordan's 63 point performance against the Celtics was when I thought he was from another planet. Like TheXen alluded to in his post, the game that LeBron plays is very different than when Jordan played. Simply put, if Jordan played in today's game, especially without hand checking, he would score 50+ easily.

I hated Micheal Jordon back then. I am a die hard lakers fan, and he abused my aging lakers for his first title.
But I will say this seeing Magic, bird, to Jordan, Ewing shaq Kobe, and the other greats. And now seeing lebron. There is no question MJ is the GOAT and this talk between him and Jordan is absurd. Lebron is a great player. But he is nowhere near Jordan. Nowhere. I'll post this video that shows every comparison between the two. It's pretty in depth. And again watching all of them live and in color. There is no comparison.

Absolutely!! It's so lop sided that it astounds me how some people will seriously try and debate it lol. Like I give lebron his props he has accomplished a ton just off amount of finals he has made and even though he lost more than won, it's still an amazing accomplishment that nobody else has done. BUT the accomplishment makes him ONE of the goats just not THE goat and that's not a bad thing. But these lebron fans just can't be happy with being the second greatest of all time next to Jordan, they have to have the label of the number one goat and it's just not even close enough to have the phrase arguably the goat. But what makes it worse is lebron himself has said multiple times he is the goat and wants his respect and is chasing that label like being the second goat in almost all fans eyes isn't the "respect" he thinks he deserves which is sad. Michael Jordan obviously personally believes he is the goat I'm sure but he has never once made a comment publically in any forum that he is the goat. Even when asked about him and lebron and him and Kareem and others, he has always said that he knows it's fun for people to debate and have their picks and things but he doesn't feel it's fair to say one player from this era is better than this player from a diff era because each era of the game changes. Lebron gets asked and he's like 'yeah I'm the greatest and I want my damn respect"! Which only hurts his claim worse.
