    NM I see the caption you put in the video when I looked at it the second time … I was worried hahah… I am choosing to use the triton other method and then run a reactor for those NO3 PO4 …. Hopefully I can get my numbers down… I appreciate the video more than you know

    Hey that’s a very good advice on not doing a lot of maintenance at one time. I used to do a bunch of maintenance all at once and ran into a lot of trouble including Dino’s TWICE...I’m going to take your advice from now on.

      KN H same, every time I did a bunch of maintenance at once I felt like a hero, but I was rarely doing the tank any good..

    Your even closer to 1,000 because I just subscribed 👈 I'm glad you mentioned that last tip about over cleaning. Its something I've done once or twice in the last year and although I didn't experience a horrible crash, I did notice the corals progress slow to a snails pace. To much change is actually whats kept me from doing a tank upgrade. Nothing fancy, just a 12 gal AIO nano going to a 20 gal, but I've been squirreling away parts over the last year so that when I started this tank I had everything I needed. However, this was a coral QT tank that turned into a hospital/grow out after my main tank cracked. Theres no sand and not much live rock, so am alittle fearful that I'm leaving behind a large amount of beneficial bacteria. I plan on bringing the sponges, racks and etc over, as well as getting some biobricks to but worried that in trying to better my situation, I could end up doing the opposite. Any advice is welcome and thanks

    Congrats mate ;)
    Tank looks great - love how you are doing it ;)
    I run my skimmer 8 hours per night, have a small ATS (0.5) and I carbon dose - my RedSR250 is only a couple of months old but everything is good - got a bit of algae and a hint of cyano with basically zero nutrients. I started with 1 year old rock so I added SPS pretty much straight away and it hasn't skipped a beat - lost a small goni I had as a tester (think the GSP took it out) but that's about it. I just have 2 mollies so I more feed corals - aminos, benereef and AB+ (which I love). So far I am happy with the majority of my colors.
    Great tip on the maintenance - I feel like I have lost corals in the past when I have done big water changes - I like to keep it to less than 10% (except a month ago when I got home to an exploded heater).
    Love your tank ;)

      I would say for giveaway do something you love - a small piece of equipment or something you feel that every reefer (or most of us normal reefers) should have. BRS would be cool too. I am in EU so I don't like the idea of corals but I have postage forwarding service so I can use BRS or Melevs Reef gift vouchers or if I won that piece of equipment I can ship it here to the EU ;)

    I built my 75 gallon to run the triton method - I'm using live rock which I've heard makes it a lot easier to have long term success. Hopefully I don't run into the same issues you did!

    • @HobbySci
      @HobbySci  4 года назад

      Craig Maltese I’m sure you’ll be fine. My core issue was not doing the ICPs required. I think with a once every 2-3week water change, you could probably do it without ICP tests. Depending on the uptake of traces that is. Let me know how it goes!

    I heard you say that if you don’t use the Treyden other method you’re doing carbon Dossi, so what stops you from just doing regular water changes and running a carbon reactor and or GFON does what you need

    Do you have any of the super high surface area 'bio blocks' to help maintain a good bacteria population? Also what nitrate and phosphate levels did you maintain whilst using the Triton method? I've been running Triton Method for almost a year now, its not been super easy, but I have picked a hard tank and bare bottom and dry rock, but it is working so far so good. I do ICP tests about every 2 months, and I've been dosing as recommended any additives. I keep my nitrates at around 5ppm (I add nitrate additive daily). Please let me know, thanks

    • @HobbySci
      @HobbySci  4 года назад

      Dedlifts my main quest was to achieve Ultra low maintenance, and I just was not able to do that with the Triton Method. Now I do glass and filter floss weekly. Water change every 3 weeks, carbon/co2 scrubber media every 2months, top of dosing containers and calibrating probes needed every 4-6months maybe? It’s a good life for sure!

    Talking about problems with your refugium was interesting. I know I've been looking at using an algae scrubber as an alternative. My refugium grows algae a lot better than chaeto. Would have to be a home made version though as they do not seem to be available where I live for some reason. Wouldn't bet on your acans not adapting well to differing light levels as I have heard they do. Rather than something like a gift voucher, equipment or gift (which would not be valid for all being country specific), my preference for the subscriber target would be a Q&A session where you ask for questions and have an episode where you produce your answers. Either that or get together with some other youtubers, if you can, to provide joint answers. I think this is more "inclusive" than a single person getting something. If you do decide to have a "gift" I would try and make it something a little different, something like a recommended reference book. If you could get hold of it still in book form rather than kindle, for a decent price, I would have recommended something like Aquarium Corals by Eric H. Borneman but I am sure there are loads of possibilities. Preferably it would be one you find really interesting and useful. Congratulations on your engagement and I hope your other half will enjoy learning more about the costs of corals and fish :)

      @HobbySci  4 года назад

      Freaky Goblin My refugium ended up needing to be trimmed like once every week. It ended up becoming a bit of an ordeal. I’m glad I made the switch.
      Definitely there are some really cool algae scrubber concepts out there.
      Thanks for the tips, I will consider them for sure.
      She’s learning more and more everyday. ;)

    • @HobbySci
      @HobbySci  4 года назад

      Ness Bawabeh thanks! I only dose about 5-8mls a day. Spread out into 16 separate doses with a doser. I don’t like doing it all in one as it tends to drop pH.

    Instead icp test you should water change. Icp only profit if you have a large water. Things you should dose is no3 po4 and axit amin for keep macro algea growth and coral growth. 1 to 2 month water change will replace minor element.

  • @TheDrunkLibertarian
    @TheDrunkLibertarian 2 года назад

    I’m really interested in the triton method but it seems like it’s just as expensive, if not more, to do all the tests and dosing than it is to just do water changes
