Hi Ryan and BRS team. I just wanted you all to know you've made a Life time customer this past week (how long it took for me to binge watch this series). I have yet to even start this new hobby, but I can't wait to start and share my hopeful success with this awesome community. Thanks for all the great information, entertainment, and enrichment I've received for this hobby. I can't wait to binge watch the rest of your video library, and eventually get my own going.
There are so many fun parts to this video! Not only the always excellent information provided by the BRS Team, but seeing Ryan have to give up all the toys on the tank he likes, only to replace with new fun toys was like watching Christmas happen. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to sit in on these meetings to plan these projects they do for us!
I did something similar to this a good ten years ago and ended up with a healthy reef and the only inputs were R/O water to account for evaporation. Fish were fed from the fuge, corals were happy and healthy, mandarin dragonet was fat. Worked for me for years despite experienced reefers telling me it was wrong. Looking forward to this followup!
It's awesome that you're taking the time (and expense) of testing various methods. It's a huge benefit to the reefing community. I've been running the Triton system for two years and while it works well, it operates under the same principles of most good reef keeping methods...stability. Your corals might appreciate a slower transition from Zeovit to Triton.
This should be fun! Am swapping out my 85 gallon reef tank for a 200 gallon reef setup using the Triton Method. Like you, fingers crossed! This one will have a 27 gallon refugium. Will be ordering the Triton system - unless I get lucky enough to win it! REALLY, REALLY appreciate all of the research and time you put into these videos!
Go big or go home! Gotta love it. Trust me, if I had the money and time...yea...I'd do all this too...at least you SHOULD be able to be writing this off the books since you are doing this for the company! Great information...still hoping my wife lets me get a reef tank.
Amazing testings. I have two reef tanks and I haven't done water changes for a year now, I developed the method myself and I can tell that its quite difficult to achieve but not Impossible. At the end of the it requires 10 minutes maintenances 3 times per week, which is is way easier than doing water changes. Good luck
I hope this works out for BRS! The tank already looked amazing and they may be trying to fix something that isn't broken here. I personally know too many seasoned reefers who went this route and crashed their system even though Triton tested everything and they followed their recommendations. Good luck BRS! I hope we see some awesome success with it all. It would also be nice to see you guys carry the new ATI system as well. ATI has been one of the best companies that I have dealt with in this hobby.
I do get why BRS is doing the "test" though. Testing new (really not that new or groundbreaking though) theories and experimenting helps us all. There are local reefers I know who run all of their tanks on tap water and zero water changes. They aren't anything to write home about IMO but they do keep things alive and thriving
zx45zx I think it's a far better test and experiment if they use it on this test and not a brand new setup. They know the 160 very well. What better way to compare and test another method then on a tank you are completely familiar with?
I have really enjoyed following this tank from the start which coincided with my start in reefing. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes and how it all works out. Shame to see the Roller Mat go as I ended up getting one and there is no way I could move mine on.
good luck BRS team I hope this tank don't crash then again if this month is work you have proven desire of all reefers possibility no water changes if you can prove that I will be shocked 4 months.
Love your videos and specially that subject as I want to restart my 400 G next months. After following your video I remember that it was highly recommended not to use LED for the refugium. They prefer T5. I would also prefer the Kessil 380. But to keep with the manufacturer, you should use T5. Thanks for the great videos. Just love all of them.
I have never done water changes in over 15 years in reefing. Incidentally, I have been using this 'Triton Method' all along. Honestly though guys I would stick with a 9+ band LED light or High pressure sodium lights for your Fuge.
I have not done any water changes on my 120 for almost year and a half with dosing BRS two part and adding trace elements, you do not need triton or any other system just common sense in setting up your sump and dosing, testing for tank is a must when i started tested every week then when balanced out every month 120 tank ,50 gal sump ,UV,protein skimmer,GFO,carbon, dosing three part and carbon adding trace as needed running mix sps,lps fish,3 inch sand bed ecotech radion lights sump light is two Power: 54W Type: PAR38,E27 screw base LED Quantity: 18*3W Epistar LED(12 Red +6 Blue) Light Spectrum: Red 630nm~660nm;Blue 440nm~460nm Input Voltage: AC 85-265V Luminous Flux: approx 4800~5400lme return pump jebao DCS 12000 at 80%
Awesome job. Two questions 1. Is the 16" Shadow overflow box handling the increased water flow? 2. What is the flow rate measurement with the new pump installed?
Huge must do on the C02 subject. There is alot to C02 and it has drastic effects on tank stability and growth that absolutely directly effect corals and many reefers success. The media running out when being used as part of a day to day system will have drastic effects on the system and alone can cause crashes, so the media must be diligently monitored from my experience.
best of luck. i have seen a video with mike palatta bout he was gojng to use the triton method. then i warched another video in where he gives up the triton method because his sustem was not looking as good as it did before. sorry but it sounds like if you want to get away from water changes then you must have an established tank like 2 years plus. sounds like another product to spend money on that might work. this hobby is not for lazy people. you have to work in this hobby. water changes are the easy part and best part to help your system. hate to see that beautiful tank to crash. i have faith in you all. also with a tank that size you should only be doing water chamgesonce a month or every othermonth. i have a friend that has a 90gal thats been up for over a year and he has done 2 water changes in that year. his acros are growing like crazy.
sending a test to triton costs 40+ dollars and you can maybe do that once a month. It isnt ment to be the only way of testing your tank but more of a way to see once a few months if you are not accidently building something up or missing something and to see if your simple test results are correct. This tank was doing amazing I hope you dont take to many risks and ruin it :)
Coño Brian and I was so enthusiastic with the zeobit and happy for the way your tank looks, am actually looking into the zeobit to star putting into my tank now am confused and don't know what to do here
Love all of your videos, they are just awesome. I would also love to win that sump. I am starting a new build and gathering all the equipment I will need. That sump would be the shinning jem.
I have been waiting on whole month to see guys announce it. I am trying to do the same thing with my nano tank it's a tank island all-in-one with a maybe 3 gallons Hang on refu.
I also have not done a water change on my Coralife it's drilled has a thump and it's pretty much self-sustaining right now I've been that way for 2 years
I don't believe we stock that exact scraper anymore, but it was just a handheld glass scraper like this one: www.bulkreefsupply.com/24-aquablade-aquarium-scraper-continuum.html
Very little bio load there. Should be very easy to maintain. I actually took down my biopellet reactor and realized the bio-film was causing pollution collection in the sump by attracting anything and everything to attach to it and the 180 gallon reef. The tank is cleaner now and the skimmer venturi is not clogging over time restricting its performance.
I thought the existing algae on the rear panel would be a competing source of nutrient consumption and therefore a noise factor and a fair comparison to the zeovit system would be to remove it before implementing triton.
I'm just wondering after all said and done what is the true cost this entire process was including all the tossed equipment/upgrades food water changes coral/fish/livestock chemicals maintance and everything associated with running the tank was or has been?
Ryan, wonder if you can use the Triton method from the very beginning? That's said I'll be following these updates closely, who does want to totally eliminate water changes?
when do we get to see the follow up to this? really eager! also, you guys modded your trigger systems sump to be more friendly to the triton method (larger fuge) do you guys know if Trigger systems has any plans to introduce triton style sumps as a normal product line? it would be great to see fuge first sump with a nice big fuge area.
I'm just setting up a 7foot tank and have been getting equipment for it for the last year building up to it . I managed to get a rollermat v2 for it and now I'm thinking of Tritan. I really like the idea of the roller filter and got it for a bargain ... My question is do I really have to not run the roller mat ? My tank is 1000litres . And I have a 175litres refugium. So do I reeeeeeallly have to delete the roller filter??
To run the Triton method exactly, they would say that you should delete the rollermat. That said, you can certainly run a modified Triton method and keep the rollermat online. Everyone has a little different of an opinion on what sort of filtration you should run, but mechanical filtration is a plus if you ask me.
I really like the concept of the Triton method, but I'm a reefer on a budget. How does this compare price-wise to semi-weekly waterchanges, BRS 2 part, and regular Aquavitro Fuel dosages? It would be a lot more precise I'm sure, but I imagine the testing and all the different supplements would get pricey.
Yeah, I follow ATI on Facebook and saw that they just released it. I might do some research on the two systems and see if they could be right for me. I'm getting good growth on my SPS, but I've never been overly happy with their color.
Color could be the dosing or light. Some say that to get the best color you need to stress your coral a bit and im not about that personally, id rather have good growth and polyp extension. its hard to have equisit color and growth with dosing. what light do you have? what color are you not seeing?
ATI Sunpower 6 bulb over a standard 125gal. I suppose I struggle with reds more than anything. I've read that's a potassium thing, so I bought a kit, tried testing and dosing K for a while, but it didn't help.
ive had a lot of luck putting in www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IF3PH7Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 or similar with getting the florecents to really come out. I have blue plus for 4 bulbs and 2 led strips in the last two spots. I don't have a lot of red though (mostly green and orange).
Any updates? I'm starting up a brand new system and am excited to be starting a new Crystal Dynamics 100 gallon reef and am in the setup and equipment collection stage so I'm curious how this method works. I've done zeo in the past with good results but am also very interested in the Triton method. Water changes are challenging for me in Summer due to my well. I have always managed by getting water in town but hauling it around is a pain and if I can avoid it I would love to!
If you use the trident method and have a Sand bed will it still work why I asked that because you need to maintain you send through syphoning but that would still be doing water changes and defeat the purpose
Cool! I wonder if it's possible to do this in a NUVO 40. I already have one of my filter sock compartments converted over to a fuge with a magnafuge light and chaeto. If I converted the other filter sock compartment as well that would double the size of the fuge. I think the limiting factor might be the power of the magnafuge light.
Oh boy, That's a lot of change. At least you are changing over to a proven methodology. I would expect some coral irritation with the change. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. I see the future results about equal, minus the W.C.'s
Would a full spectrum (mostly blue, a little less than a 3rd red, and a couple greens) like a growlight work? I have some old leds from my deconstructed bonsai room. Edit, the color it makes is the same color as your refugium and sump. Can i use that for corals?
What do u mean by Poton? And t5 lighting when using triton I've never heard of that , most people I no who's been doing triton couples years now and they use leds
BulkReefSupplyCom if u claim to no alot about triton and the information uve gave in this video u should no u said u "need" t5 lighting in the refugium for the triton method. I'm not being given rude or anything I'm just stating my opinion and the information I no from people who have been on triton for a couple years now plus the guys information on the fb triton group and every1 uses leds on there fuge on triton. Basically my pint is you don't have to use t5 lights on your fuge with triton and it does state that no were on the triton method
BulkReefSupplyCom I'm going to start a brand new 40g tank with 20g sump using zeovit system with the triton other methods because there is no enough space for a fudge what you guys think ??
I want to do Triton and have the fuge size for it. I actually have an Ecotech XR15 Pro available for my fuge. Any idea how I should set up the light for best results growing Chateo? Right now I just have it set at 6500k. I see the light on that Kessil is very pink.
Hey! I notice in my 10g Nuvo tank some brownish slimy algae on the sand. I do water changes weekly and siphon the sand but can't get all of it. It keeps coming back and slowly spreads on the bottom of the glass too. Is this Cyanobacteria? It has a small amount of red in it but it's mostly brown.
Why no roller filter? I'm struggling to see the scientific merit on this one. I'm building a custom sump and thinking this flow: drain + roller filter --> skimmer --> refugium w/ chaeto and pods --> return. A skimmer oxygenating the water entering the refugium would prevent anaerobic bacterial blooms in the refugium. Cons of this approach could be detritus in the return pump, and the refugium may not have a lot of macro-nutrients supplied to it. BUT surely nitrates and phosphates - these are tiny molecules that slip through filters and bubbles. A practical solution would be to turn off the roller filter and/or skimmer now and then if the chaeto etc. is not thriving - saves energy, too! Thoughts BRS friends?
Probably you should make a video on total cost spent on BRS160 so far. You may have got them all for free but how much would a person have spent if they got nothing for free is the question 😝
Ok you're crazy for using the Kessil 1200 on this system. While yeah you say people can spend over a grand on a skimmer, fact is you're still using the skimmer so it's not like you're removing the skimmer in lieu of the macro algae growth. But who knows, maybe enough growth and you don't need a skimmer? I am curious though how do you deal with nitrate removal? Is that all macro algae that you remove?
Ryne, i need ro win the Tritton Trigger System sump, ive never won anything yet, my reef tank is running for a year now , any upgrades is a welcome , your chanel rocks
BRS 160, single handedly responsible for the success of my first reef tank. 8mo and counting. Thanks guys, you rock!
I've learned so much from you channel thank you!
Hi Ryan and BRS team. I just wanted you all to know you've made a Life time customer this past week (how long it took for me to binge watch this series). We all have that rich friend that rubs their fancy equipment on our faces. BRS is that rich friend. Thanks :)
hey my friend is Leo
Word on the street this Triton Method isn't the greatest thing for a reef in the long run. Good luck BRS.
I did something similar to this a good ten years ago and ended up with a healthy reef and the only inputs were R/O water to account for evaporation. Time, yes. Expense, no. They get this stuff free from companies that want to advertise their products.
This should be fun! Am swapping out my 85 gallon reef tank for a 200 gallon reef setup using the Triton Method. Like you, fingers crossed! This one will have a 27 gallon refugium. Going to be following really closely to this method.
Love the idea of no more water changes.
Good luck !

It's gonna work.
You guys are the Reefer Kings...
Superb work boys. For larger tanks the refugium nutrient sink along with Triton dosing looks a winner.
Super excited to see this change and looking forward to the results. Great work guys!!
Killer Trigger Triton Sump!!! They're my favorite high end sumps!
Good luck you guys!!!
Really excited to see how it goes.
Ryan Thompson totaly agreed, this tank looks amazing as it is.
I do get why BRS is doing the "test" though. Testing new (really not that new or groundbreaking though) theories and experimenting helps us all.
There are local reefers I know who run all of their tanks on tap water and zero water changes. They aren't anything to write home about IMO but they do keep things alive and thriving
Why not just start another tank?!?!?!?
zx45zx I think it's a far better test and experiment if they use it on this test and not a brand new setup. They know the 160 very well. What better way to compare and test another method then on a tank you are completely familiar with?
Ryan Thompson vegetative filtration within the display tank is the future! Dersa clams will be our new powerheads!
swear that tank looks majestic AF
I have really enjoyed following this tank from the start which coincided with my start in reefing. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes and how it all works out. Shame to see the Roller Mat go as I ended up getting one and there is no way I could move mine on.

I LIKE challenges . . . and in seeing how you handle them!
very exciting I have been curious about the Triton method for some time now. Thxs for trying the Triton method out. Wish I could help.
I have never done water changes in over 15 years in reefing. Incidentally, I have been using this 'Triton Method' all along. Honestly though guys I would stick with a 9+ band LED light or High pressure sodium lights for your Fuge.
Watching with interest! After a decade in the hobby I'd love to stop doing water changes
I have not done any water changes on my 120 for almost year and a half with dosing BRS two part and adding trace elements, you do not need triton or any other system just common sense in setting up your sump and dosing, testing for tank is a must when i started tested every week then when balanced out every month

Hey Hey...Does the Triton pack come with those nifty looking dosing caps at 2:34 in the video; or is that something you guys put together yourselves?
I haven't done any water changes for two years without using the Triton method products but the same sort of ethos and my SPS are growing like mad
Excited to see how the triton does..great info on the change over...I could really use that h380...lol
The lighting is beautiful
best of luck. i have seen a video with mike palatta bout he was gojng to use the triton method. then i warched another video in where he gives up the triton method because his sustem was not looking as good as it did before. sorry but it sounds like if you want to get away from water changes then you must have an established tank like 2 years plus. sounds like another product to spend money on that might work. this hobby is not for lazy people. you have to work in this hobby. water changes are the easy part and best part to help your system. hate to see that beautiful tank to crash. i have faith in you all. also with a tank that size you should only be doing water chamgesonce a month or every othermonth. i have a friend that has a 90gal thats been up for over a year and he has done 2 water changes in that year. his acros are growing like crazy.
I've been thinking about going with the triton method. I can't wait to see the results!
Did you do the triton method?
sending a test to triton costs 40+ dollars and you can maybe do that once a month. I have been waiting on whole month to see guys announce it. I am trying to do the same thing with my nano tank it's a tank island all-in-one with a maybe 3 gallons Hang on refu.
Would love to see a video on alge reactors as compared to sump tanks.
I also have not done a water change on my Coralife it's drilled has a thump and it's pretty much self-sustaining right now I've been that way for 2 years
What tool are you using to pick up the chaeto 0:58
I don't believe we stock that exact scraper anymore, but it was just a handheld glass scraper like this one:
www.bulkreefsupply.com/24-aquablade-aquarium-scraper-continuum.html
Felt like I was watching an episode of pimp my reef lol... nice update!
Love the videos. Keep them coming.

Will you be cleaning the algae off the rear panel before starting up triton and how do you plan to handle cleaning the sand bed?
I thought the existing algae on the rear panel would be a competing source of nutrient consumption and therefore a noise factor and a fair comparison to the zeovit system would be to remove it before implementing triton.
The new return pump is sooo expensive!! Lol for a sec I thought he was going to say the Neptune Systems COR. I got really excited
I'm just wondering after all said and done what is the true cost this entire process was including all the tossed equipment/upgrades food water changes coral/fish/livestock chemicals maintance and everything associated with running the tank was or has been?
A giveaway of the take off equipment would be cool!
So no filter socks on Triton method? I am looking forward to this one because I have been thinking about it as well.
things just got really interesting !!
Ryan, wonder if you can use the Triton method from the very beginning? That's said I'll be following these updates closely, who does want to totally eliminate water changes?
I use Triton other method and having execellent results from this kit.
gaz foskett what's your primary filtration ?
habavonc I use the theiling Rollermat.
when do we get to see the follow up to this? really eager!
also, you guys modded your trigger systems sump to be more friendly to the triton method (larger fuge)
do you guys know if Trigger systems has any plans to introduce triton style sumps as a normal product line?
it would be great to see fuge first sump with a nice big fuge area.
Can't wait to see your results with Triton I'm interested but want too see your results first
Hi guys, can you make a video on how to start a Triton reef from the beginning? Information found is pretty hard to understand.
I'm just setting up a 7foot tank and have been getting equipment for it for the last year building up to it . I managed to get a rollermat v2 for it and now I'm thinking of Tritan. I really like the idea of the roller filter and got it for a bargain ...

Also will you include costs uo front or on a monthly basis what the average reef tank owner would have spent doing the same thing you do?
Any updates? I'm starting up a brand new system and am excited to be starting a new Crystal Dynamics 100 gallon reef and am in the setup and equipment collection stage so I'm curious how this method works.
Why don't you turn the intensity of the refugium light to the max? I didn't know macroalgae can burn out?
Oh ok. Thanks for the answer!
Oh boy, That's a lot of change. At least you are changing over to a proven methodology. I would expect some coral irritation with the change. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. I see the future results about equal, minus the W.C.'s

Would a Tyree live sponge filter section in the sump or display work well with this new approach?
BRS I have a question you can use nopox with the triton method ... thanks??
thanks for the information I'm grateful ...
Hey BRS! Quick question.. If you have a sand sifting goby/ starfish, do you still have to vacuum your sand bed during maintenance?
I really want to do this but it take me some time to get the stuff can't wait to see if it works
Since you don't currently sell the recommended Tropic Marin Pro salt, what salt did you use to set up your BRS160?
Would you guys say that a 60 inch bashea sump would work good for the triton method?

Is there a reason why the trition method has you remove the mechanical filtration?
omg that goon at 1:08 carrying that water xD I would get murdered if that's how I carried water on my hardwood floors lol
How far down from the top of the tank are the return line bulk head installed?
Thank you for the response.
hello how are you ... a question you think i can dossing the core7 of triton manually
BulkReefSupplyCom (Thank you)
So triton is for water changes or not????
You guys should set up a giveaway for the ZeoVit kit...since you removed it :)
BulkReefSupplyCom I'm going to start a brand new 40g tank with 20g sump using zeovit system with the triton other methods because there is no enough space for a fudge what you guys think ??
Any advice is appreciated
This is a cool experiment
It’s been nearly a year, hows the tank?
BulkReefSupplyCom cool thanks!
Can we get an update on how this is going?
I wish I can win the sump I just set up my 125gal reef tank thanks BRS for the opportunity
Everything is awesome..!
Dude that kessil is awsome i would have used it also.
I use a zetlight horizon algea led. Just installed it and the Growth is awesome... And i don't even know what i Am doing :-)
I can use a filtre sock with the Triton
Would an ats and skimmer use other elements or triton method
Only at BRS would they do a DIY mod on their old sump, just so that they can give away a better brand new sump away to a fan
Probably you should make a video on total cost spent on BRS160 so far. You may have got them all for free but how much would a person have spent if they got nothing for free is the question 😝
You should give away the old refugium light!!!😁
Nice video 👌
Looking forward to your results. Dabbling w the idea myself.
