  • A model railway tutorial on using cassettes on your micro layout.
Hello everybody, I'm back today with another quick tip video and today I thought I'd share with you the cassette system I use in the fiddle yard on Pickwick Yard my 00 gauge shunting layout. Since it's a micro layout the cassettes don't need to be that long and so I've been using the Peco Loco Lift to move my stock on and off the layout!
You can check out the Peco Loco Lift for yourself here: peco-uk.com/pr...
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

I've been using those cassettes for several years. They'are very good. Ciao from Italy!

The best one I've seen was about 4ft long, a length of track on a MDF base, MDF sides and ends with a grab handle running the entire length down the center made from a broom handle. The operator picked up a seven coach + loco N gauge train as if it were nothing at all. He had about ten of them all with long trains on ready to go. Genius idea and so cheap and simple to make!

Great! Yes I've seen people make them out of cable trunking too, which is handy as it doubles as a storage case when you put the lid back on. A 4ft long cassette would be overkill here though. The layout itself is about that long anyway which is why I was experimenting with something a bit more manageable. Thanks for watching 😃

My pleasure! It’s certainly made my operating sessions much more fun by keeping activity in the fiddle yard down to a minimum! Thanks for watching 😃

You can also use the loco lift as a "bridge" to link a longer cassette to the layout. You can drive the train straight over and the lift Bridges the power onto the extended cassette. Useful for dmu/emu trains with permanently coupled vehicles.

Personally I'd be more inclined to use a proper connection if using cassettes for longer trains. It would be stronger, more stable electrically and less likely to come apart while a train is crossing. Thanks for watching 😃

Good idea 👍 What if there would be a track leading to a tunnel or shed at the end of the layout and then behind that tunnel or shed you could connect a cassette? That would be a way to make disappear one train and appear another train, behind a tunnel or shed, out of sight 😎 while you can prepare that train in a cassette - handy for demonstrations or video recording

Yeah that's definitely something people do on really small micro layouts instead of having a fiddle yard. It works really well from what I've seen, especially if you're short on space. Thanks for watching 😃

That's a great idea. It has to simple, I'm not very good at making things. I have a limited space space so that would be ideal. Thank you.

Thanks Tom, glad to hear it’s helpful! Yeah, these go together really easily so if I can manage it I’m sure you’ll have no trouble! Thanks for watching 😊

Hi mate, great video. I really enjoyed it.In your intro how did you get the steam to travel across the screen like that cause i would like to have something like that in my intro. Keep up the great work, Jack

Hi there, I made the intro in Adobe After Effects using a particle simulator. From what I remember it was a lot of trial & error to get it to look and react like steam so I'm afraid I can't be of much more help than that 😆 Thanks for watching!

Would you recommend these loco lifts for a MPD/TMD layout where there would really only be at the biggest for steam a GWR 72xx and for diesel a Class 47?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 года назад +1

Hi there, I think they're designed to be able to hold even the biggest engines so you shouldn't have any trouble with a 72xx of Class 47. Though apparently Peco are phasing these out in favour of a new design so you might want to check those out. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

I realise you are using oo gauge but have you or any of your subscribers found an equivalent for n gauge? Peco don’t make one and I haven’t been able to locate one online so far. I was hoping someone might know if one existed?

Hi there, maybe try this from York Model Rail: yorkmodelrail.com/shop/tools-and-storage/mls052-storage-n-gauge-cassette/
I can’t say I’ve tried it myself but it looks similar except it doesn’t clip over the track like the Peco one but connects onto the end of the siding instead. Thanks for watching 😀

It is! Such a shame they don't make these types of lifts anymore as the updated version has a few issues in my opinion. Thanks for watching 😃
