Great review, just ordered mine. My take on the length is this, since the couplers on oo gauge equipment stick out quite far I would consider cutting two arches in the bottom of the end plates this would allow the hook portion to stick through but yet contain the locomotive body. I believe you can get quite a few more locomotive models in a single carrier this way.
Awesome, hope this video helped you decide. Yeah that is definitely a possible way of getting around it. I just can't help but feel that it wouldn't be necessary had PECO just made it a cm or two longer. Thanks for watching 😃
Why should you have to do this to a new purchase??? As Peco are a long established company shouldn't this have been thought about at the design stage.... It isn't as though they haven't got access to the whole range of locomotives available on the british market to try this out with. I think it is very poorly thought out, just like the hattons 66. I don't know how much this costs, but I bet it isn't cheap for what it is, just cheap plastic and a bit of brass. Unless it's just a way to get you to buy a third one to make the length up, bring back the old one even though that wasn't cheap either.
Just to confirm its not t an issue on the locos mentioned if your using kadees - the thing I dont like though is it looks like it wants to do the splits at the base leaving the loco to drop through
you can solve this in n gauge by adding an extra strength bar across - but its not an option in OO as the bar would be more than half way up and not really do anything
I feel like making a better version of this would be a great first project for someone who just got a 3d printer. I'd personally just use these to make storing my locos much easier, stacking these up on a shelf rather than having to put them all back in their packaging every time. Though I guess that's what display cases are typically used for.
Yeah it definitely seems like a a good project for a 3D Printer - you'd just need the brass strips to transfer the power. These definitely make storing the locos a lot easier, especially if you don't have a display case or just want to keep the loco close at hand but just not on the track. Thanks for watching 😃
Nice to see a sensible video from you, and a good and honest review. I have a number of the older Peco loco lifts and I replace the flimsy foam and replace with stripwood (B&Q) this enables me to join a number loco lifts together to increase the length
Thanks Terry. Ah brilliant, joining multiple lifts together like that sounds like a great idea. I knew it wasn't a built in feature of the old lifts but I figured someone out there would have figured out a way to do it! Thanks for watching 😃
Great video. Great idea to move and store loco’s. I agree with your review of it and the upgrades needed on the newer version. Thanks for sharing, stay safe. Ken
Thanks for this, especially the inside length dimensions with shutters in place - a crucial piece of information sadly lacking from Peco. I'm in Australia, so will probably have to order this in. I'm thinking of it for an HO 4-8-4+4-8-4 garratt which is impossible to lift by hand in one piece, and constantly breaking it apart to lift it in three pieces risks wearing the plastic connecting clips and their integral electrical connections. Having seen this, I realise I'll just scrape it in with one single unit plus one double unit, although I'll need to be careful it doesn't spill out the bottom. Maybe Peco needs to provide a U-shaped clamp to fit over the middle to stop longer units from spreading. Thankyou.
Glad you found the video useful Peter. Ahh the benefits of HO being slightly smaller than OO - yes I can see why a loco lift is perfect for a large loco like that. Thanks for watching 😃
Bought 2 for use with my N gauge...haven't got on with it, the smaller, lighter locos such as my class 24 and j94s have a habit of dropping one side down the centre....there is quite a gap between sides of the locos and as a result there is a lot of sideways movement for the loco...which also makes it difficult when driving a loco off.
Ah that's really interesting. I thought that maybe this style of lift might be more useful for N Gauge modellers but it looks as though it comes with it's own set of problems. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks for this vid giving me a good feel for this new product. Always valuable to see something new in action before a potential purchase. Helped me conclude that I will stick with my DCCconcepts MPD loco cartridge, servicing and safe storage system. I bought the one long enough for my longer articulated locomotives
Glad it helped you make a decision John. The DCC Concepts MPD's are quite a bit more expensive than these but then again if they do exactly what you need them to do it's probably worth the price. Thanks for watching 😃
Gosh, I had no idea such a device existed! The one thing I'd be nervous about is the bottom splitting open a bit, widening the "gauge", and allowing your loco to fall through. But it sure beats picking up a loco and eventually rubbing any paint or weathering off. I've seen that before!
Yes that's mostly what I was worried about too which is why I think I slightly prefer the older version with the solid base. But it's definitely a handy device for those that don't like handling their locos too much. Thanks for watching 😃
Awesome, that sounds like a great little tip John! I doubt it will be possible on the newer version but I might try it out for myself on the older one. Thanks for sharing 😃
Hi. Very clear and instructional video. I have already bought the double version and also a single version for flexibility for my N gauge. One small issue with your video: while you did mention that they are multigauge (and you only have - or demonstrated - OO gauge) and thought they ought to be a little longer, it may be that the length would still be acceptable for longer, smaller gauge locos.
Hi Paul, yes as I mentioned in the video I do think the single lift will be more useful for N and 009 layouts but as I don't have one of those to hand I obviously wasn't able to test whether the longer locos would fit. It just seems to me that the point of making it work for multiple gauges was a great idea but somewhat negated by it being to short to accommodate a lot of 00 gauge tank engines. Thanks for watching 😃
Great video mate, I was exited to see what peco had come up with but I must say I'm a little disappointed. It is so close to being really good but misses in almost every category imo. Looks like I'm scouring the Web for old loco lifts again.
Yeah it was so close to being a really great product but it just falls at the final hurdle. I think honestly they would have been better off making solid baseplates for 00 and N and just selling them as two different lifts. I certainly won't be getting rid of my older ones anytime soon. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks for the review...I agree that Peco seem to have made an obvious error on this with the length - unless they want you to have to buy multiple modules! I think if I get one I will be looking out for a second hand previous version or some old stock somewhere.
I think it’s probably just a silly design rather than some evil plot by PECO but I suspect a lot of people will be keeping a lookout for the old version. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks for the video. I get the impression that by making the new lift 'all things to all men' (except P4), then it has become overly complicated resulting in inherent weaknesses and compromises. Peco - please bring back the old OO gauge locolift and make something similar for N gauge. The length is a real shame and to double / treble up for fitting larger locos, so is the price. There is an advantage of multiple units for storing / loading Beyer Garratts for example, but you will find a method to extend the old lift to fit one of these on RMWeb thread titled 'Heljan Beyer Garratt' page 99.
I do think that they would have been better off making one version with an 00 Gauge base and another with an N Gauge base. I understand the reason for making it adjustable but in my opinion it's made it a bit too flimsy. The length is a real shame too, I still can't understand why they didn't just make it the same length as the old one. Thanks for watching 😃
Nice video mate. I have never seen such device before! certainly saves you accidently braking a detail part if you lift the loco off by hand! I would consider these if I can find a local retailer that has them in stock. Nice review. - Nicholas.
Thanks Nicholas, yeah some people do find them useful. Especially in the smaller gauges where it can be a bit tricky to get things on and off the track. I believe these have only just been released so hopefully they'll start popping up in shops fairly soon. Thanks for watching 😃
why o why did they discontinue the old version as the old adage goes if it isn't broke why fix it i just hope somebody can come up with a similar design to the old one sorry but this new one just doesn't come up to scratch
Presumably they wanted to update their old design with something that would work for multiple gauges and as a result they discontinued the old version so that they could focus on the new one. In my opinion it was a good idea but just falls short of the mark in a few places. Thanks for watching 😃
I could be missing something but surely the end shutters still prevent locos falling out of the ends even if they only get down to the buffers or couplings. As someone who has never used one of these I think they are fairly pointless anyway, just my opinion. If you want to use these just close the shutters as much as they will. Even using one will stop the model falling out if you keep that end slightly lower when carrying.
Oh yeah, there are definitely ways around it and to be honest I was probably overly critical in the video. The frustrating thing is that if PECO stuck to the same dimensions of their old lift it would have been fine and I just can't understand why they decided to shorten it. 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Yup.. I only have a simple hornby set. Never seen this product before. I subscribe to many model train chanels. and what a pointless product. 😳. Not only is it pointless, its not even designed well. What a waste of brass. 😳👍
I was going to get some of these to use as cassettes for a small 009 layout but after seeing this I don’t think I’ll bother as I’d be scared of the loco and wagons falling out the bottom plus with the amount of movement it doesn’t give me much confidence in how sturdy it will be after constant use after a few months.
Yeah, that's a shame. Obviously I don't have any experience with using them for 009 but with smaller engines like that you really do want to be confident knowing that your locos are completely safe. Thanks for watching 😃
Yeah possibly, I can definitely see what you mean. I reckon you could probably get a kit for an actual engine shed cheaper though if that’s what you really wanted. Thanks for watching 😃
Good comparison video, the new loco lift I don't really trust that much, as you said its to flexible in the middle and the fact that it can't hold big locos very well is a bit of a put off, I have the old one and it does feel more solid which give me confidence
Yes you've nailed it there Adam. The flexible nature of the new version does mean I feel much more confident with the older version and it's solid base. Thanks for watching 😃
To be honest, I really don’t see the need for a loco lift. Taking locos on and off the track is really easy to do, as long as you know where to grab them. Many micro layouts have fiddle yards which can easily be fitted with a mini turntable or spin plate. In the case of storage, it’s easy enough to make a stock box for a layout, which would take up a lot less space than a stacking crate system, as well as being easier to transport.
I think it's mostly a matter of preference. Some people find it much easier to put locos on the track properly with a loco lift (especially those with pony trucks or bogies) and others prefer not to handle or touch the locos at all if they can avoid it. I don't use them all the time but there are certain situations where I do find them useful. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy For my own, I have a loco lift first model by Peco and a railing aid by Märklin. The second is a kind of spatula that helps you to put all the wheels right on the track, by sliding down your engine on it after having installed iti on the track. The more wheels you have, the more usefull it is, my most wheeled engine is a german BR 85, which is a 2-10-2 tank engine... On the other and, a loco lift permits you to take away the engine, swap it or turn it, and store it with other ones. It's an exploitation simulator excellent for a Minories or, better, any small end station with local trafic. I think of something like GWR's Ashburton station. This one is a good idea, but there is some details to change to have a better product. A solid base like the original, and 2cm more length to the modules would be a good idea.
Good informative video - PECO why not produce a second longer lift with slot groves set at 'common' lengths ? I presume the intention is to sell users multi examples to fit together ?
Thanks Michael. I think that was their intention with making it modular but it just hasn't been fully tested with a wide range of locos. To me it doesn't seem like a plot to make you by an extra section. Thanks for watching 😃
Nice video. Interesting. Though if all I want to do is turn an engine around and send it the other way I’d simply fit a turntable. As a storage and quick change of loco it is certainly an idea I suppose. Seems though to me Peco have come up with a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist, as we all have hands & locomotives normally come in boxes & to me seems an unnecessary additional cost. All said and done for quick removal, change and swap round in an area out of sight of a diarama that has no ballast where space is limited and only a few locomotives to do a number of quick changes back and forth, maybe. But I’d still go for the older model if it were me.
That's fine if you have the space for a turntable and also the skills to install one properly, which a lot of people don't. Obviously for demonstration purposes I was just using the lift to turn the locos but for those who have to handle their models on a regular basis it can be quite handy - especially with the fine details now on a lot of models. Their previous loco lift was a very popular product and it's a shame it's no longer available, although commercially I can see why they introduced this new version. Thanks for watching 👍
I wonder how hard it would be to convert these lifts into a rail elevator for a layout with a more sci-fi theme, like the rail yard for SDF trains In the Galaxy railways.
Interesting idea! You'd probably be better off fixing a section of track under the metal strips to give it some extra rigidity but considering they stack fairly easily it may not be that difficult to do. Thanks for watching 😃
Being an older person I had problems with putting the double item together. The clips holding the two units together would not clip in so in the end I had to glue the joining clips to get the two units to join I would not recommend these items.
I bought a foot long ruler the other day. Unfortunately it's only 10 inches long ! I think Peco made that too. My H0m locos won't fit and adding two together will make it too long. Seems like a bit of a silly product, unfortunately.
I think it's one of those things were Peco had the right intentions but by trying to make a product that worked for everyone they've ended up making something that doesn't really suit anyone. Thanks for watching 😃
Interesting idea although I'm not entirely sure how much that would help. Do let us know how you get on though if you do try it out. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks for the test, especially the dimensions. It's a shame that Peco does not lengthen this module just by 20mm, a double one would fit all engines, and a single would accomodate all small tank engines. With the older version I already have, I can use it for a long 2-10-0 like my austrian BR 52 or my Bachmann 9F. I feel I would need a triple module for this one. By the way, I need a real cassette system that can handle a whole train (I mean, 1200 mm lenght), and I have to find a way to make my own by myself... Anyway, I might buy one, and even four to make a long system, I have a two-cars DMU that could use this system. So, why not an off-the shelf cassette system for whole trains that does not costs an awfull lot of money ? (Already exists but HO/OO 1200mm = GBP200, ouch !) I can theoretically get 8/9 of those modules together to have one but, besides the overall cost, that would not be stiff enough for safe operations...
Thanks, glad you found it useful. I agree, if PECO had just matched the dimensions of the old one they would have been fine and it baffles me as to why they didn't. Yes I think for cassettes that can handle a whole train you probably are better off building something simple yourself. I know DCC Concepts sell something like that but the prices are still quite high. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy By curiosity, I have seem the length of my longuest engine, my HO OBB BR 52. She needs 290 mm, buffers and couplers included, let's say 300 mm, to be stored, and the double by Peco is 20/30 mm too short... If you have a huge american steamer, Big Boy or Challenger, three or even four unit system mandatory... Ironically, the shortest by DCC concept is long enough for her. I have seen what they sell and their product is roughly the same, albeit not in kit form, and not stackable, but you have padding foam sold with it, and a 1120mm long unit (GBP 85 plus VAT this one...). The drawbacks of the DCC concept is that you don't have a shorter one than 360 mm, a 240mm one would be a great addition, you have no end panels (but you have foam plugs that can do the trick) and it's not a stackable unit. As you say, I surely will better off building mine by my own : some thick cardboard and glue, a length of Peco Setrack of Piko A at the bottom, and here I go for a dozen 1200mm units for the price of one double Peco.
The old one seems miles better. The fact you need two for most tank engines, and three for tender engines is clearly a money grab from Peco, wanting you to buy at least two for most engines.
I think it's less of a money grab and more poorly thought out. Personally I don't get the impression they're just trying to make a bit of extra cash, it seems like they just didn't do enough testing really. Thanks for watching 😃
I sort of get their reasoning behind it, it's much easier for them to produce one lift that works for everyone rather than several different ones... but yeah I'm generally of the opinion that the dimensions, at least for 00 are a little bit off. Thanks for watching 😃
I can see where they were going with this new design and I think it could have been better than the original had they thought it through a bit more. But I have to agree, the older one does seem to have the edge thanks to it's simplicity. Thanks for watching 😃
Hey Daniel, they’re the SE&CR Birdcage Coaches from Bachmann in the Dark Lake livery. Really nice coaches but very expensive! Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
Yeah it's definitely handy for the more delicate locos that you prefer not to handle too much - I know I have a few of those. But I agree there's a few silly mistakes that could have been easily avoided. Thanks for watching 😃
Peko is HO...that's why those larger Saddletank locomotives won't fit. Your using a smaller scale for a larger scale. For example, I can fit a 67ft locomotive into two of those, while in OO, you cant, barely. Also, you still had room on the front pilot...im also gonna push Peko's bold statement further. I have a Maxi III wellcar. Comes in at over scale 200ft and is die-cast. Measures also at 3 & 1/2 inches with a full stack. I'll need 7 of those. As for my Daylight...I got a switcher & storage tracks for that reason. Store my modern BNSF intermodal train & beautiful ES44AC on 2 different tracks while having a TVG, ICE, E5 Shinkansen, and first Generation Acela 3 Mixed freight, coal, oil, 2 military, & passenger trains on one huge yard while also hosting my beautiful steam engine fleet. All 4 of my steams are so pretty, especially my GS4...wondering how many Diesels & electrics I got? 10 Diesels, and only the 4 above mentioned trains, most of my Diesels are BNSF, or Southern Pacific, with 4 Amtrak Locomotives mixed in, a F40PH, B40-8WH, P42DC, and an ALC-44 (Amtrak's new Charger locomotive). Y'all think my train collection is bad, wait until I tell ya about my ship, tank, & truck/lorry collections.
I don't know where you're getting the idea that this PECO lift is only for HO but that isn't correct I'm afraid. The lift is advertised as being for N, 00 and a variety of other gauges/scales (you can see them all listed on the box towards the start of the video) and in the UK where PECO is based, 00 gauge is by far the most popular. Thanks for watching 😃
That's true, although as I did mention in the video I was talking predominantly about British 00 models rather than HO or other gauges. Thanks for watching 😃
There are some people who prefer not to handle their locos too much especially if they have intricate lining or lots of fragile detailing. It also makes railing larger locos (especially those with pony trucks) easier too. Of course it’s not for everyone but some people do find them useful.

Do you have an xbox 360 underneath rockets box?
Haha, good spot. It's actually an Xbox One but these days I'm mostly playing trains rather than games! Thanks for watching 😃
Yes I found them a bit stiff initially too. They've loosened a bit over time but that's not much use when you do it originally. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi there if I get any I think that I'll end up glueing them
Interesting idea although I'm not entirely sure how much that would help.
In comparison with the original, it’s not an improvement. Also totally agree, they should have made it 30mm longer to take a small steam loco.
I sort of get their reasoning behind it, it's much easier for them to produce one lift that works for everyone rather than several different ones... but yeah I'm generally of the opinion that the dimensions, at least for 00 are a little bit off. Thanks for watching 😃
I do think the old ways are the best
I can see where they were going with this new design and I think it could have been better than the original had they thought it through a bit more. But I have to agree, the older one does seem to have the edge thanks to it's simplicity. Thanks for watching 😃
Can someone please tell what kind those are that pass at 6:54 I've always wanted a set but never what to look up or where to find some
Hey Daniel, they’re the SE&CR Birdcage Coaches from Bachmann in the Dark Lake livery. Really nice coaches but very expensive! Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
Could be qite a useful peice of kit for transporting locos and carriges!
Yeah I think that's definitely a great use for it Ben. Should make it much safer. Thanks for watching 😃
Looks useful perhaps on more delicate and expensive locomotives, shame it falls slightly short of expectation. Thank you for an uplifting video.
Now stick a hoist on it and make it go up to another level of track, no more helixes
Blimey, now that would be quite a task! 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy thank you for making great content 👍
I know why mine doesn’t work now, I threw away the screws like a moron 😭😂
Oh no! Hopefully you can get some replacements. Thanks for watching 😃
I will stick to my hands
That’s also a valid option. Thanks for watching 😃
You may want to rethink your statement re the original Peco Loco Lift fitting all locomotives. Clearly you don’t own American locomotives.
That's true, although as I did mention in the video I was talking predominantly about British 00 models rather than HO or other gauges. Thanks for watching 😃
I don't see the point of this. It just seems like a silly gimmick
There are some people who prefer not to handle their locos too much especially if they have intricate lining or lots of fragile detailing. It also makes railing larger locos (especially those with pony trucks) easier too. Of course it’s not for everyone but some people do find them useful. Thanks for watching 😃
