  • Hello, and thank you for joining me for part two of my BIKC regional final at Leeds.
If you watched part one, you've seen I managed to progress to the grand final, but not before being wiped out during the semi-final by another driver.
Having just scraped across the line in P5, I ultimately start the grand final in P10. To add salt to the wound, the person who put me into the wall received no penalty for his actions and started this race in the top 5!
This exposes a huge flaw in the BIKC penalty system. I questioned the leading marshal after the event about the lack of penalties applied for this type of driving. His response was:
'If the red flag has come out, then the race is restarted in the previous order and so no one has gained an advantage. Therefore, no penalty needs to be applied'.
The problem with this, is it isn't true that an advantage wasn't gained. A similar situation happens to me again in the grand final (as you will see in this video). On both occasions, I start the lap behind said driver, I overtake that driver, then later in the same lap they wipe me out and cause a red flag. Then they get their position back at the restart. That is an advantage gained, surely? The only way to make this fair is to apply a time or position penalty after the race. Otherwise, there is no deterrent for careless/reckless/dangerous/unsporting driving.
All the above aside, I'm really happy with the way I performed. I think one small mistake (leaving the door open in the semi-final) had a domino effect on the rest of my races. I should have focused on defence a bit more, rather than attacking for the lead.
This is all experience to take on board for next year. Congrats to all who competed. I hope you enjoyed watching my journey. Please like, comment and subscribe!

The biggest takeaway from this years BIKC has been the way that penalties are applied. I took my son to watch his mates in the jnrs at Leeds and the marshalling at times was appalling!!! Really does need to be sorted for next year!!

Hi! Yes, I agree. The way penalties are applied needs to be sorted. It seems like the marshals often used the red flags as an excuse to not apply penalties to individual drivers. It wasn't really fair. Hopefully next year they will improve. It does also seem to be a thing with Leeds, in particular. I'd be surprised if they host a regional final next year.

@@preecelightnin5795 i have had that same conversation abouts Leeds hosting regionals next year before!! One of the juniors parents had emailed about everything that happened on the day, and last time i saw them, they hadn't even responded. Not good at all!!!

Hello 👋 I was there for the final, I got into the regional final and came 9th as a cadet, if you were watching the sessions (i don’t know wether you were or not) in one of the heats I went from 7th to 4th after a group of three karts had span-out in front of me and pushed themselves out wide.

Hi there! I wasn't there to watch your races, as you'd have been on the Saturday and I raced on the Sunday. Well done for reaching the Regionals. 9th is a good overall result. By that point, you've already gone further than many do! Better luck for next year. 💪

You looked so much quicker than most of those guys in front of you. Even with all the battling. Shame about the stupid restart rules...

Yeah, thanks Ryan. Looking back at the footage, my kart wasn't even that great - losing time to karts ahead on the straights - but I still felt good in it and could still fight. The red flag rules are frustrating, yet I could tolerate them if people were punished post-race because at least it's not a free pass. I think it's something that needs addressing next year for sure. Still, you did very well this year too and hopefully Nottingham can get even more drivers to Nationals in '24!
