  • “What happened at Mariupol, at the very beginning of the war... I don't think they want to do that, with Kharkiv, because it will consume far too much manpower.”
Putin will not take Kharkiv as there are “five different probes” going on, says Robert Fox, defence editor for the Evening Standard.

Completely disagree. (1) One cannot be expected to place defensive lines right on the border in the middle of a hot war; Russia’s Surovikin lines were done several KMs behind the front line; (2) Russia lost an *extra* 500 personnel per day trying to cross the border at Kharkiv, which seems like a poor use of the meat tactic if this were a feint; (3) Russia’s use of glide bombs show they *don’t* have any control of the air; these are fired over 50KM behind the front to avoid being shot down.

The Ukrainian 1st line of defense was 10km inside the border for good reason. Otherwise it would have been under constant surveillance and bombardment. Ukrainian border troops withdrew in good order to the defensive line, inflicting heavy losses on the invaders. By this time the axes of attack could be seen and reserves were brought forward where needed to defend the line. Now Ukraine is defending from heavily fortified positions and Russia is attacking across 10km of mostly open terrain.
Of course there is much consternation in Ukraine that Russia was able to advance into Ukraine, but you can’t call yourself an expert by simply repeating the very understandable anxiety being expressed by Ukrainians at this time.

Not even ten minutes into this explosive interview and we see the soft underbelly of President Zelensky's war effort. We know the Ukrainians have suffered through 813 days of war, but what we hear from Robert Fox is that Ukraine's war effort has some holes in it and mistakes have been made and western support is coming albeit in drips instead of flood waters. The bottom line is that war is unpredictable and what you need is a mindset to win. I am betting on Zelensky getting through this thing and Ukraine winning all of its land back, but what is sure is that there are some battles ahead and lady luck is high on the list of demands from both sides of the conflict. We must remember that invading forces have less desire to win than the other side. Ukrainian forces may be worn out and exhausted, but they are still able to fight 3 times harder than a Russian conscript who knows no one in the Russian chain of command cares at all for his life.

I agree as part of the story, but the new ammo and weapons have arrived and it's a new ballgame, the russians have missed the window of opportunity and will not get close enough to execute their burned soil approach. Surovikin is back on the other side, there's a potential mass mobilization that we don't know about as it now can take place in silence ( the russian legislation and systems have been put in place), but there simply are not enough trainers on the russian side and people are sent to the front with only 2 weeks training, they barely can operate at squad level (3-5 p), the economy is crumbling.
In the meantime, Ukraine has been focusing on Crimea and Krasnodar region for the last three days. (radars, air defence systems, Dzhankoi and Belbek airbases, port of Novorossisk, oil refinery of Tula), while ATACMS and HIMARS start to create havoc behind the enemy lines, demolishing logistics and warehouses.
There is no Moscow pact, no London pact, no Ottawa pact and no New York pact ... (referring to the support by the allied forces in WWII), no Bush tighs (American food support for russia). The outcome is predetermined.

Interesting reality and worthwhile interpretations in there, here's another one.
Putin has no plans to capture Kharkiv, and everyone is cheering because in their perception he admits defeat, but his plan may well be to get closer and flatten it ... he never said that he wanted to conquer the city, always look at the actions, not the words, rusnia's tactics till now has always been 'burned soil', if we can't have it, then no one will have it ...
The defense lines were not put on the border for the simple reason that the russians were within shooting range. Stay away from the russian narrative that there were serious mistakes made.
Ukraine keeps operational silence, but take a step back and observe. 3 Nights of bombing Crimea, and Krasnodar, disabling air defence and radar systems and pushing the russian airforce back (Dzhankoi, Belbek), demolishing the russian Black Sea fleet's fallback port of Novorossisk, disabling another oil refinery (Tula) that was sending crude oil to Turkey, where it gets blended and then ends up in the EU (brilliant loophole in the sanctions there, excuse my sarcasm). The Ukrainians are fighting a war of attrition, and running a race against time with their drone developments (AI, baba yagas, FPVs, mother drones, drone squads, these are brilliant guys, they were the brains of the russian military industrial complex (with eg a missile factory under the tractor plant in Kharkiv ...).
Of course, with the new American munitions and weapons arriving, at this moment the game has changed and we may well be able to keep putin far enough from Kharkiv. But don't forget that Surovikin has come back ... give him some time, he's good and cruel, Putin's inauguration has passed and that guy no longer needs to keep up appearances. Mass mobiilization, the digital systems have been put in place, no public chasing people anymore. Never underestimate your adversary.
On the other hand, putin's visit to China was a disaster. Xi Jinping was not there to welcome him, just a subordinate to welcome putin when he got of the plane. A commercial deal on artisjoks and beef cartelage and stomacs, and russia rented for 99 years a geographical area larger than France to China (to protect the big cat, cq Siberian tiger, but the Chinese have already started exploiting the area)
Before putin's inauguration, 'all is fine' was the message that came from the propagandists and the head of the national bank, within a week after putin's inauguration, inflation in russia is communicated to be back at 8%. And official channels deny it was communicated differently before. Interesting how russia is a master in changing narratives, they're real spindoctors. But things are not going well, and although the posture of putin may reflect confidence (is it ?), putin is a dead man walking but he does not know it yet.
    Slava Ukraiini !
    Heroyam Slava !

      1) Putin isn't going to flatten Kharkiv. 2) Ukraine had plans to fortify the area with dragon's teeth and mines but didn't. It's not catastrophic though by any means. 3) Russia doesn't "public chase". That is Ukraine. 4) It's unlikely Russia even needs a mass mobilization. Russia currently has a massive advantage in basically everything with voluntary recruitment. 5) I couldn't find anything about Russia leasing an area "larger than France" to China. Russia and China did agree to create a nature preserve for tigers and leopards that extends across both borders called the "Land of Big Cats".

I think Russia will take Kharkov and whatever else is required to create a buffer zone between it and Ukraine, just like they have consistently said for the reasons they have consistently said. Robert Fox is right in saying that the Russian military will not attempt to re-run attacks like in 2022 on Kharkiv city and his use of the word "invest" is interesting outwith its military usage.
The reasons are a mixture of mutual pragmatism and Russian history, so one has to know a bit and, sadly for the west, ignorance prevails.
I disagree with Fox re Mariupol because it was a stronghold of the Azov very large and brutal militia (which Zelenskyy made into a regiment but the AFU rejected the thugs). Mariupol was earmarked for replacement anyway with expanded portage and shipyards along the coast but when the Azov's dug in and held hostages under the steelworks and sent wrecking parties to disrupt the railways, Russian forces had no option but to evacuate civilians as best they could [aided by Ukrainian railway workers outstanding bravery] then flatten the city. Air power was not organized enough for what we see now so artillery, missiles and sapper platoons were used.
I know this from the initial refugees whom I helped with IT here in Ireland were from that city.
It is worth seeing the progress on new Mariupol undertaken by Russians and Ukrainians -- not that the western press will show that.
The strange status of Kharkiv with Moscow has two strands, one dating back to when it was the capital city of the Ukrainian SSR 1919-34 then (no longer as capital) the craft jewel in the crown of metals production from the mines and steel ingots of the Donbas, making machine tools, vehicles, the famous T-34 'Kharkov' tank and it meshed with Russia's metallurgy industries in Veronezh and Belgorod oblasts.
It was also a cultural hub of old Ukraine relatively close to Moscow's 'Muscovite' cultural showpiece city and capital of Russia/Soviet Union and associations with the Russian imperial period.
Fox mentions other 'probes' and all of these date from 'New Russia', built during the reign of Catherine the Great, whereas Peter the Great's interests rather earlier had been on securing territories often dominated by Sweden and allies until his victories in the Great Northern War and building of St Petersburg. Whereas Catherine's forebear had been more interested in trade and economics, she wanted a Russian 'shop window' in a less cold climate.
Note that Kiev/Kyiv had had a different developmental history and was often as much Polish-Lithuanian as 'Ukrainian' or 'Russian'.
The other strand relevant to now connects to history but because modern Kharkiv and Sumy have relied on Russian railways for their export consistency since the big slide into decay after 1993 then especially post-2013 Maidan splits and massive indebtedness worldwide, Russia offers routes to the Black Sea and now much more important markets of Asia as well as access to oceanic routes via Iran and/or what the Chinese call 'the Caspian leg' of their initial BR Initiative, which had to be changed a bit when Biden ran away from Afghanistan.
The shape and types of governance post-conflict per area of what is now the Rep of Ukraine depend upon what the people choose BUT a Kharkiv/Moscow accord would have the dual advantage of efficiency all round, a possible role for Kharkiv in a semi-autonomous Donbas as well as cultural and production links to the southern and western regions excepting Kiev nexus oblasts -- not that there are many.
Lviv will probably seek independence (as it tried to in 2019), some areas stolen by Stalin at Potsdam could be reclaimed and it is possible that an administrative 'capital' of federated Ukraine could be at Dnipro city.
The 'west' is humiliated, the USA did not get its proxy war using Ukrainian blood, the EU Commission's excesses have been exposed and NATO needs to return to its charter then discuss full status and affiliate status of countries -- or simply shut up shop.
